John Santos of Los Ange-les wants his home to be a healthy gathering place for family and friends, some of whom are recovering from major illness. As part of his effort, he recently had his home’s ductwork profes-
sionally cleaned. “I wanted to make certain the air that
they were breathing was as clean as it possibly could be,” says Santos, 54, a high school technology teacher. “Especially living in a city like Los Angeles, where the air quality can really be poor and cleaning the air sys-tems can provide value.”
Although many homeowners consider duct cleaning a way to make their indoor air cleaner, research on whether it can really create a healthier home is in the early stages.
The Environmental Protection Agency recommends looking into duct cleaning after fi res, fl oods, pest infestations and in hazardous waste situations, or if you can see particles coming out of your ducts. Otherwise, the agency says it’s not necessary for the average household.
Tom Keys, president of Atlantic Duct Cleaning in Sterling, Va., says his company has done more than 80,000 duct-cleaning jobs, and that many custom-ers report back
that they have better air quality, a cleaner home and lower energy costs. Customers often are surprised at how much debris collected in their duct-work over the years, he says.
“Most of the people who do it, do it for peace of mind,” Keys says. His company has found all sorts of items in ductwork beyond dirt and grime, including class rings, rare baseball cards and construction debris from when the home was built.
Keys encourages homeowners to ask duct-cleaning technicians for evi-dence that there is dirt in the ducts that should be removed.
Jodi Araujo, executive director of the National Air Duct Cleaners Associa-tion, says homeowners can tell when ducts are dirty by simply removing a register cover, inserting a camera and clicking a photo.
On the other hand, John DeSilvia, a contractor and host of DIY Network’s “Rescue My Renovation,” premiering Feb. 27, doesn’t generally recommend
duct cleaning to homeowners. It’s normal for dirt to accumulate and stick to the sides of air ducts, he says. The exception, he says, is if there’s visible mold growth.
If you do have ductwork cleaned, he advises getting a few estimates and ensuring that the service you hire uses high-powered equipment to capture what they dislodge. Otherwise, the effort could backfi re.
“Any dust and dirt not collected will be distributed throughout your home, causing a bigger problem,” DeSilvia says.
If you decide to get your home’s ductwork cleaned, expect to pay between $400 and $800 if there’s one HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system. If you have more than one zone, you could pay more. That’s because duct cleaners don’t just clean the ducts; they also clean the furnace and air handler for each unit, which could extend the life of your appliances.
In addition, they can identify any places where a duct has become unsealed, torn or fl attened, preventing good airfl ow. Many professional duct cleaners recommend having a system cleaned every fi ve to eight years.
Keys says consumers should ask about any hidden charges, such as extra fees per register, and check consumer sites such as Angieslist.com for reviews of duct-cleaning compa-nies.
He also notes that for cleaners to gain access, the ductwork must be cut, and trained technicians need to know

Cold temps, water issues, reasons for split loquat skins
Q: The loquat tree on our property has fruit that are
just turning yellow. Too bad they all seem to have their skin split-ting. Did I do something wrong?
A: The mild win-ter has the
loquats or the Japanese plums producing crops slightly earlier
this year. This evergreen tree, that is commonly used in the landscape, has yellow, 2-inch oblong fruit with one large pit. The skin is thin and edible, and the fruits are easy to harvest. The fl avor is reminiscent of its cousin the plum. Mature loquat trees are very cold-tolerant and withstand temperatures as low as 10 degrees without damage. But the fruit and fl owers are killed when the temperature drops below 27 degrees. Your fruit might have been touched by the cold and then split. Or the tree received too much irriga-tion or rain and the fruit swelled beyond the tight skin and burst. For more information about loquats and other fruits, call the

Q: I found an old framed picture of Pretty Polly,
“The Queen of Table Waters,” by The Apollinaris Co. Ltd. She is a chestnut fi lly (1901-1931) owned by Major Loder of Eyrefi eld Lodge in Ireland. She
won 22 out of 24 starts and two second-place wins. Her bloodline is very interesting. I have two pictures with information on the back of them, also the fi le I found on Pretty Polly.
I found the picture at a yard sale, and I am really interested in horses. Could you steer me in the right direction to fi nd an estimated dollar amount for the old print or painting. The frame is oak with board slats on the back. The Prince of Wales and the queen drank Apollinaris Table Water.

A: Thoroughbred racing collectibles is a category of
collector interest. Most collec-tors are interested in American horse racing memorabilia. I am sure you have a print of some type, likely a chromolithograph.
It is an interesting fi nd relative to the history of Pretty Polly, but low on the totem pole of collec-tor interest. Relative to advertis-ing memorabilia collecting, it is of very little interest. Potential dollar value is less than $50.

A: Sometimes called Dragon Ware by collectors for
obvious reasons, it has been made since the early 20th century. The raised decoration is called moriage, a technique that has been used
since ancient times. Moriage is achieved by applying small pieces of clay and clay slip to the body. The English called it squeeze-bag technique, similar to decorating a cake by squeezing icing through a funnel. Your set would likely sell in the $100-plus range.

gardening catalogs for the past couple of seasons, and they look really tempting, even though they are about three times the price of un-grafted plants. But they may be worth it, especially for some of our heirloom varieties that have trouble with root knot nematodes or soil-borne diseases.
What you would pur-chase is actually a combi-
nation plant that has a disease-resistant root stock fused to a fruit-bear-ing top. The top of the plant produces the desired fruit, and the roots are resistant to diseases. Researchers at the University of Florida IFAS
have found that grafted tomatoes in greenhouse studies showed increased plant vigor, fruit yields as well as better absorption of water and nutrients that were applied.
One of the main issues we have with tomato plant
roots in North Central Florida is root-knot nematodes. These are microscopic worms that form galls in the roots of plants and inhibit absorp-tion of water and fertiliz-ers, and make the plant less productive or stop production altogether. If the grafted tomatoes that you are looking to pur-chase are resistant to root knot nematodes, you will have better success in your

Q: We recently had a big storm hit New
England. Once again, I wish I had a backup generator system installed at my home. After going through my second prolonged power outage in the last few years, this spring I’m going to get the project started. Who do I contact fi rst, and what can I expect to happen during a power failure once my generator is installed?
— Andy, New England
A: I want to clarify that the type of generator
you’re asking about is called a “standby” generator system. Residential standby generators run on natural or propane gas and are permanently hooked up to a home as an automatic system. These systems can provide emergency power to a home for days or even weeks at a time while one waits for local utility power to be restored. A standby generator system needs to be professionally installed, and all re-quired permits need to be pulled.
Start with a licensed and insured standby-gen-erator installer in your area. You also can contact a certifi ed
standby-generator distribu-tor, and he/she usually can set you up with an installer. The fi rst visit
should include walking the property to check out equipment location and the electrical load to determine the correct generator size. Also, ask for an estimate in writing, since standby power systems can be expensive.
What should you expect from a standby system? When power is lost, an automatic transfer switch starts the system, and in about 10 seconds or so generator power comes on. Once electricity is restored, the standby system shuts down.
Bottom line: Installing a standby generator system can keep you “current” with the latest trends in home technol-ogy.

rating myth-buster.Here’s a misconception I
want to shatter: Big cabinets don’t work in small spaces. Wrong! Big cabinets work in every size of room, from a cavernous gallery down to a tiny little nook.
And they elevate the look of every room lucky enough to have one. Big cabinets give a room instant depth and visual interest. Depending on your goals, big cabinets can serve as an exciting backdrop to a furniture grouping or star as a room’s focal point. They provide a perfect place to store or display just about anything you want, from a big-screen TV to favorite accents to pretty storage baskets.
Here are some spots where you might want to place a big, beefy cabinet :DINING ROOM: Forget that tiny curio cabinet in the corner of your dining room. Trade up for a large cabinet that can hold all your dishes and serving pieces, and make a huge style statement while doing so. One of my favorite options is to use a large bookcase, then fi ll it full of dishes and other lovelies.
If your big cabinet doesn’t reach the ceiling, take advantage of that empty space and fi ll it with a montage of framed artwork.STUDY: Many of us have studies that are cozy and warm. Accenting a study with a wall of beautiful bookcases will knock this room out of the ballpark. A friend converted an
upstairs bedroom into a work hideaway. It’s a small room, but a bank of bookcases actually makes it look larger,
debunking that myth that bookcases don’t work in small rooms. At fi rst blush, you would never guess this many bookcases could squish into this space. But here’s the amazing thing about big cabinets: They may be tall and wide enough to cover the entire wall, but they are usually thin, just 14 to 18 inches deep, so they don’t hog precious fl oor space.
Lots of folks have TVs in their studies or dens. Large cabinets with multiple shelves and openings provide a perfect home for today’s big fl at-screens. Put the TV in one, then fi ll the others with a variety of accents, like books and pottery. LIVING ROOM: When you’re picking out a large cabinet to add to the living room, the sky is the limit. You could showcase an antique armoire with mirrored doors. Cover an entire wall with bookcases. Use a tall secretary to break a larger room into two conversa-tion areas. Put matching cases on either side of your fi replace mantel. Or stick a taller, thinner cabinet in a smaller space between doorways. Large cabinets will help anchor the room and provide bonus storage.BEDROOM: Many newer homes feature huge closets with lots of built-in storage for clothes, so people aren’t putting dressers in their bedrooms as often.
Unfortunately, these rooms are now missing the visual weight that dressers provided. A great solution is to feature a large cabinet in the bedroom. Try a bookcase, then fi ll it with photos of your family. Or a hutch, using the bottom portion to hold out-of-sea-son clothing or extra bed linens and the top to hold books and decorative accents.BATHROOM: If the bathroom is large enough, consider fi nishing it off with a large cabinet. I just helped a customer design her large master bath. The space was big and open and needed something to ground it and provide some bulk. So we placed a large cabinet against an open wall, fi lling it with
folded up towels and glass containers. She has declared her bathroom one of her favorite spots in her home.KITCHEN: A trend I’m loving in kitchen design is to add large, free-standing cabinets to the fl oor plan.
While your built-in cabinets will hold the lion’s share of everyday kitchen items, it’s really fun to bring in a contrasting cabinet to use for more eye-catching kitchen items, like pretty soup tureens, platters and pitchers.

both as a place to host large-scale events and as a family home, the 17,100-square-foot villa sits beside a circular motor court centered on a multi-tiered fountain. The
1.85 acres of grounds include an outdoor kitchen, a swimming pool with a cabana, a 2,100-square-foot sports court, an olive grove, a lawn and a rose garden.
The interiors feature ceilings as high as 30 feet, a hand-painted wall mural of the Tuscany landscape, limestone columns and Venetian plaster/faux fi nish walls. Rooms include a walnut-paneled offi ce, a 12-seat theater, a game room, a wine cellar, a gym, seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms.
Bonds, 48, played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants during a two-decade-plus
career that included seven most valuable player honors.
He paid $8.7 million for the property in 2002, public records show. The estate is being offered furnished.

don’t have to leave home during cleaning because the dust and debris should be going directly into containment systems. Sterilization chemicals generally aren’t needed unless you have an unusual situa-tion such as mold or sewage backup.
To complement duct cleaning, Keys recom-mends having carpets and draperies cleaned, too.
Santos, the homeowner from California, says that after his home’s ductwork was cleaned, he has to dust less and his home smells fresher. His family and friends feel “a whole lot better” knowing the air system is clean.

Q: Maybe you can help settle a disagreement
between me and my wife. We were looking at model homes and I noticed one of the models we liked had the furnace in the garage and another model had the furnace in the laundry room. I like to tinker and I need all the room in the ga-rage I can get, but the one in the laundry room makes it a little cramped in there for hanging laundry. What’s the difference?
A: There is a big differ-ence as to where a
furnace is located. Fur-nace installations are naturally leaky unless properly sealed — that is,
they can leak a lot of air through the fur-nace’s cabinet and at the sheet metal added to the furnace. The added
sheet metal would be the supply ducts and the cold-air return ducts. If the ducts and the furnace are in a garage, attic or crawlspace, they are, in essence, located outside and you will lose heated air in winter and gain heated air in summer.
No matter where the furnace is located, you will fi nd that in most homes a
majority of the ducts are outside in an attic or a crawlspace and a lot of energy is lost through the placement of leaky ducts. There are exceptions, such as when a furnace and all the ductwork are in a basement, which is heated and cooled, or in some of the concrete-slab homes with the ducts under the slab.
When a gas- or oil-fi red furnace is inside, in this case in a laundry, you have to be concerned with the amount of air available for combustion. A small laundry room with a water heater and a dryer would be competing for the same amount of air if all the appliances were on at the
same time.A 10- by 10-foot laundry
room with an 8-foot ceiling would have 800 cubic feet of air available for com-bustion. A 100,000 BTU (British thermal unit) furnace next to a 40,000 BTU water heater would require approximately 1,540 cubic feet of air per hour for combustion even without the dryer pulling air out of the room. In this case, there would not be enough air for all the appliances.
Most modern furnaces have a fresh-air intake pipe to supply the furnace with combustion air from outside, or the laundry room may have a louvered door to supply makeup air
from the rest of the house. If there is not enough combustion air, deadly carbon monoxide gas can develop.
If you are buying a new house, you now know what to look for. If you have an existing home, you can seal the ducts at every joint and seam you can fi nd using metallic tape and silicon caulking. Ducts in a garage, attic or crawlspace can then be wrapped with foil-faced insulation designed especially for ductwork.
The insulation should be rated at R-6 to R-8 or higher depending on local requirements. The higher the R-rating, the more resistance to thermal
transfer you have. Insulate the exposed water lines if the water heater is in a garage and insulate the larger of the two pipes for the air-conditioning system where they are exposed both outside and inside. It also would be energy-wise to insulate the garage walls and ceiling and try to keep the overhead door closed except when entering or exiting.
