For more than 20 years, the Big SouthConference has been a progressive, NCAA Division Iathletic conference reflecting the energy and growthof the Southeastern United States.

Founded in 1983, the Big South has matured intoa competitive leader in college athletics, actively pur-suing excellence both on the field of play and in theclassroom. Based in Charlotte, N.C., the Big SouthConference’s growing presence as an NCAA DivisionI athletic league is evident by competitive successon the national stage, innovative marketing andmedia partnerships, increased television packages, the enhancement of the quality of the student-ath-lete experience and strategic planning that has car-ried the Big South through the first decade of the21st century.

Entering its 24th year of existence in 2007-08,the Big South Conference continues to emerge byproviding quality athletic competition, and intentional-ly fostering the academic, personal, social, athleticand leadership development of each student-athlete.

The league consists of eight member institutions:Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, High Point,Liberty, UNC Asheville, Radford, Virginia MilitaryInstitute and Winthrop. Two new members will jointhe Big South footprint in 2008-09 with the additionof Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, which began itstransition to Division I athletics in 2006.

One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton wasselected as the league's first commissioner and con-tinued to solicit new members. The league's sevencharter members were Armstrong State, Augusta,Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina,Radford and Winthrop.

In 1989, George F. "Buddy" Sasser replaced theretiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner. UnderSasser’s leadership, the conference implemented itspublic relations and compliance programs, and intro-duced its first-ever men's basketball television pack-age, featuring the Big South competing among someof the finest teams in the nation. Sasser was so inte-gral to the growth and foundation of the league thatin 2000, the Commissioner's Cup -- the annual awardgiven to the institution with the most successful ath-letic year -- was renamed the George F. Sasser Cup.

In Aug. 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasseras the league’s third commissioner, and in his 11years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander hasbeen instrumental in aggressively promoting the con-ference to new levels.

The 2007 championship, the Big South’s first single-site tournament since2002, saw host UNC Asheville capture its first conference title in front of a sell-outcrowd of 1,381.

This year’s championship will begin with a trio of quarterfinal contests on March14. The quarterfinal winners will join the No. 1 seed in the semifinal round, which willconsist of 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. tilts, March 15. Both semifinals will be broadcastLIVE by SportSouth.

TheLiberty women’s basketball team took advantage of this stipulation, capturing BigSouth titles No. 8, 9 and 10 at the Vines Center.

The Roanoke Civic Center hostedthe 2001 and 2002 championships, the 1999 and 2000 tournaments were held atthe Asheville Civic Center and the Vines Center was the site of the 1997 and 1998conference men’s and women’s tournaments.

The 1997 and 1998 tournaments at the Vines Center produced some of the high-est-attended contests in Big South Conference history.
