This course allows variation in the approach and content of the regular curriculum and often will be used by visiting professors. II. RATIONALE: Recognizing that students come from various church backgrounds, this course is designed to expose students to biblical and practical Christian prayer and its influence on Christian ministry and individual growth. Therefore, a student must grasp the rationale for prayer, its principles, and its accomplishments in individuals, the church and the world. The student will want to capture the zeal and passion of prayer in his/her Christian experiences with a view of incorporating it into his/her ministry and lifestyle. III. PRE COURSE ASSIGNMENTS: 1. 1. Read the textbook How to Pray by Elmer Towns, Regal Books. Write a one paragraph summary of each of the chapters. Be prepared to lead a class discussion on one of the chapters. Give thought to discussion questions to involve the class. (Counts as one quiz grade)

2. Work out a list of the various prayer exercises used in your church, i.e., prayer phone, prayer room, various prayer meetings, pastor’s prayer partners. Also include the various prayer programs used by your church. There will be a sharing time for all class members to share the various prayers with one another. (Counts as one quiz grade)

3. Read The Church That Prays Together by Elmer Towns and Daniel Henderson, Navpress, 2008. After reading The Church That Prays Together write a personal plan for you to involve the people of your ministry in prayer and pray with them on a regular basis. Include names of real people, places and times. Describe how you will go about this project and what you expect to accomplish by having a well-rounded prayer ministry. (Counts as one quiz grade).

IV. POST COURSE ASSIGNMENTS:

1. Prayer Diary Project: This is a 30 day journal that you will need to complete by July 21, 2013. All the information for this Prayer Project is listed below. This project can be emailed to Renee Grooms at [email protected] or mailed to:

2. Read a total of 2500 pages (DMin) or 1400 pages (Masters) from the books listed below. (One audio file equals 50 pages of reading). Fill out a reading report form (attached) on each different book or audio file. The pre-session assignments count toward the total assignment.

3. All post course work is due by July 22, 2013. V. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR WRITTEN AND ORAL PROJECTS:

A. This course is offered at the doctoral level and the work will be evaluated as such. Four credit hours will be awarded upon successful completion of the course.

B. An exceptionally high quality of writing and grammar usage is important in the production of all class work and assignments. Assignments that show a lack of attention and low proficiency in writing and grammar skills will be returned ungraded for correction and resubmission. If that makes the paper late, late penalties will be assessed.

C. Helpful resource to improve your writing: Turabian, Kate L. A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 6th ed. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2007. ISBN: 0-226-82337-7

D. Keep copies of ALL assignments. Paper and electronic copies are like “academic insurance.”

E. Plagiarism is forbidden. Plagiarism is the use of another person’s words or ideas in ways that cause those words or ideas to appear as if they are your own. The source of the words and ideas of others must be cited. Proven plagiarism leads to termination from the doctoral program.

VI. COURSE OBJECTIVES: A. General Aims: 1. The learning material of the course is the biblical theological and experiential

reports of those who have used prayer in their Christian experience. 2. The course is motivational to give the student a love to know God, talk to God,

and use all the various means of prayer. 3. The course will include a number of occasions where small groups will allow the

student to personally reflect on the issues that are being presented.

B. Specific Cognitive Objectives: 1. To understand the biblical motives and expressions of the various ways Christians

pray. 2. Through examining the biblical nature of biblical prayer, the students will

determine how he/she may employ prayer in their personal and church life. 3. The student must gain an understanding of the spiritual nature of the church and

how prayer influences its ministry. The student will evaluate his prayer experiences in light of the lifestyle of various churches.

4. The student must gain an understanding of the aims and programs of the church’s health and growth and how prayer will accomplish those aims. Thus the student will be motivated to become involved in a church.

5. The student must examine a correlation between the various ways different churches use prayer. They will be able to determine what influence prayer has in church ministry.

6. The student will examine the various programs of prayer as they exist in various churches today. The student will determine how to do the ministry of prayer and what relationship various expressions of Christian experiences have on prayer.

7. The student will examine the strengths and weaknesses of the prayer movement in church relationship to various reflections of Christian experiences.

8. The student must comprehend the church scene in today’s changing world, and then determine how prayer can be incorporated into its various ministries.

9. The student must realize what prayer expectations different churches make on their members and how these expectations are changing. The student will also determine how he/she can broaden his/her understanding of those who pray differently from him/her. Then he/she will determine his/her relationship to other Christian prayer experiences after he/she leaves the class.

C. Performance Objectives: 1. Small groups will be used at least once in each class period to involve the student

in localizing his/her needs and suggesting how prayer can meet those needs. 2. Small groups and dyads will be used for actual prayer. 3. Regular quizzes will help the student assess his/her progress in the course. There

will be short answer questions over the material given during the previous class. The quizzes cannot be made up if a student is absent. The nature of the class prohibits any make-up quizzes.

4. 2500 pages are required for D. Min students; 1,400 pages for Masters. The students must report his/her reading on the appropriate form.

5. There will be a final exam that is a case study “take home” exam. The student will prepare a prayer diary that will reflect his/her prayer experience. The student will be given practical experiences of fasting, making prayer lists, finding a prayer partner, concerts of prayer, praying for healing, leading someone to Christ, etc. The student will follow the 30 day format in writing his/her journal.

PROJECT: PRAYER DIARY

A. QUALITATIVE REPORT To be turned in after the course is completed. The final due date for this is July 22, 2013. The purpose of these projects is for the student to apply to his life and ministry the issues discussed in this course. 1. JOURNAL: The student is to keep a daily journal for one month of his spiritual pilgrimage

during this time. Even though journaling is private, the student will turn this material into the professor. Don’t include material you do not want the professor to see. The student will journal one month of prayer experiences and write an assessment of his spiritual growth (success and failure).

ITEMS TO INCLUDE IN JOURNAL 1. Answers to prayer. 2. Insight from Bible reading. 3. Insight from fasting. 4. Approach to decision-making. 5. Approach to problem-solving. 2. PRAYER LIST: The student is to make a list of prayer requests for 30 days. As answers are

given, note them in the journal; also note non-answers to prayers. The students must pray daily, but the length is not determined. The student must write his/her responses to their prayer ministry during the 30 days. What have they learned? What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses?

3. ONE HOUR: The student must set aside one hour for prayer on two occasions, remembering

the Lord who said, “Could you not tarry with me one hour?” What did you learn about yourself? What did you learn about prayer? What were your weaknesses and strengths?

4. FASTING: The student must conduct a one-day partial fast on two occasions (food only) for

his/her spiritual growth and the benefit for his/her ministry. The student must make entries into his/her journal during the fast. What were the accomplishments? What did you learn about fasting and about yourself? How will you do it differently next time?

5. FAITH: The student is to ask God to lead him/her regarding greater faith for a ministry-

project. The student is to study faith, asking God to give him/her greater faith for the “faith-event.” Then write the event in the journal. The student should also write the reasons for the “faith-event.” What was the “faith-event” and how did you approach it? What were the reasons you wanted the event? How great was the accomplishment and what is your assessment of the results? How are you a stronger believer because of this “faith-event?”

6. ANOINTED MINISTRY: The student is to ask the Lord for the “filling of the Spirit” or for

“the Lord’s anointing” on a particular aspect of ministry. Then write in the journal the project’s spiritual preparation, and a description of how the ministry developed, answering, “Were you anointed by God?” “How much?”

7. PRAY THE LORD’S PRAYER EVERY DAY FOR 30 DAYS: It doesn’t have to be in

sequence. Note daily what you experience, learn, and get from God. Calendar Spring 2013:
