LAURA VON ROSK´S EXPERIENCES.

BIG CHANGES: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEBODY HAS TO MOVE TO ANTARCTICA.

IN WHICH WAYS A PERSON HAS TO MAKE CHANGES TO ADAPT TO ANTARCTICA?

FOOD IN THE ANTARCTICA

“The diet provided at each station is very similar to the kinds of food eaten at home in the UK. ““The main difference is that fresh fruit and vegetables are limited in their availability. ““Vegetables, fruit and meat come tinned, dried or frozen but foods such as bread are freshly baked”

(Natural Environment Research Council- British Antarctic Survey, 2012).

CLOTHING.

The CLIMATE of Antarctica is the coldest on the whole of Earth. Antarctica has the lowest temperature ever recorded on the ground on Earth: −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) at Vostok Station. On most parts of the continent the snow rarely melts

CLOTHING.

POLAR CLOTHING: to work effectively it must: allow perspiration to disperse allow free movement be comfortable whatever the weather keep the body warm, especially fingers and toes THE LAYER METHOD: the best way of achieving these

needs. Several layers of lightweight clothes are better than one

or two layers of thick, heavy clothes. The layers allow good ventilation, and the trapped air acts

as good insulation against the cold.

HEALTH:It is vital that every

person living in A. is fit and healthy.

In case of crisis, there is the possibility of surgery in the largest stations (E.g. Rothera).

◦COMMUNICATION:◦Life and Death.◦Comm. Systems: key

part of any Research Station.

◦Permanent Satellite Links to the outside world: Broad Band Internet and a sophisticated telephone network.

◦ Internal com: Radios, portable satellite phones, walkie-talkie systems. (disrupted by the weather) HEALTH AND

THE STORY OF LAURA VON ROSK.

LAURA ´S EXPERIENCES.

assistant and Art/Science liaison

CHANGES IN HER ART/ WORK
