SUMMER SPECTACULAR CANCELLED FOR 2020, BE BACK IN 2021!
Because of the circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Southern Cruzer board made the sad deci-
sion to cancel the Summer Spectacular, scheduled for Saturday, August, 29. This cancellation follows the closing
of the “Back to the Fifties” weekend and the State Fair. Hopefully, the pandemic will be solved, and the Summer
Spectacular will be back, strong as ever, in 2021!

How are we doing so far? We are practicing our social distancing, but my wife is carrying it a little too far. I have
not seen her in three days! Just kidding!!! Actually, she is, and has been, the voice of reason in our family. I fol-
low her advice on wearing my mask and keeping 6 feet away from other folks while out in public. One good bit of
news is that my 98 1/2 year old mother is out of the Covid wing and back in her regular room at the nursing facility
after testing negative a few times for the virus. Last summer she told us that her goal is to live to be 100, and with
her Finnish “Sisu,” I’m confident she will make it! I have said quite a few times that if I realized I was carrying the
same genes that keep her alive to 100, I would have taken better care of myself!
As time goes on, we learn more of our favorite pastimes are being cancelled, including “Back to the Fifties,” and
our own Summer Spectacular, which, after deliberation, was called off for 2020 by the Southern Cruzer board. I
know a lot of you are, including myself, bummed out over these decisions, but I think it is the right thing to do con-
sidering the circumstances. Let this Covid-19 thing work itself out and hope a miracle happens, with them finding
a good remedy that would allow us to get back to something resembling normal. If you look on page 7, you will
find that our car world has found ways to fire up our rides and get on the streets for awhile. I personally have
been on 4 drive by cruises, honoring veterans and birthdays. These drive by cruises, even if they only go a few
blocks, are worth mentioning in the Cruz News. Also, the Wednesday morning breakfast guys have had two out-
ings at Perkins’ organized by our faithful waitress, Jen. We gather out in the parking lot to catch up on the latest
with the usual smart talk added in, and Jen comes out with our pre-ordered meals. We thank Jen & Perkins’ for
doing this, and encourage all to send some business their way once this Covid thing is over!
A couple of months ago, I was hoping to find enough news to report on in these pages, and so far, so good! It
helps when someone steps up such as Chell Craigie to give me a nice article (see page 5). Since the article was
written about his car, Chell reports that he is driving the wheels off of it! After ample rain last night, the sun is now
coming out. Time to fire up the mower. It’s been 8 hours since I last mowed! Stay safe and healthy. We’ll see you
out there, somewhere. DB

GARAGE SCENE - CHELL CRAIGIE IS DRIVING “MISS DAISY” AGAIN!
I recently got a phone call from Chell describing a project just finished on his ‘55 Chevy that he calls “Daisy.” Chell was wondering if I would be interested in doing an article on the car, and of course I said, “Heck, yes!” (Well, may-be I didn’t use those exact words.) Chell was concerned with the motor’s excess oil consumption and decided to check it out. Allow me to put this in Chell’s words. “After 6 years of leaking oil, burning oil, and blow-by it was time to rebuild ‘Daisies’ engine. At highway speed I was using a quart of oil every 200 miles! Charlie Hyatt of Innovative Rod & Custom in Elko ( 952-334-3313), for-merly at Dick's Hot Rod shop, took the engine out and cleaned up the engine bay (a lot of oil on the cross mem-ber). Then my son Kris (who owns a pickup) brought it to Dan's Auto Repair in Prior Lake (952-447-3668) for the rebuild. Dan (Jr.) has a complete machine shop for any kind of engine work. Dan said when he took #6 & #8 pis-tons out of the block the top ring fell out on the floor in pieces!! That may explain some of the blow-by prob-lem. Anyway, turn-around time for the project was less than 2 weeks. Charlie re-installed the engine and ‘Daisy’ is on the road again!!” Photos from Chell Craigie and the editor

CRUISING, COVID-19 STYLE
Despite all this self quarantining and social distancing, we car folks will find a way to get our rides out of the gar-
age and down the street. In the last month, we have been invited to partake in some drive-by cruises for local vet-
erans and the celebration of a couple of birthdays. The Wednesday breakfast guys have also, met twice in the
Perkins’ parking lot to enjoy dining, Al Fresco, courtesy of our waitress, Jen, and the fine folks at Perkins’.
