Big 5 ODR data generation and

analysis

PBIS Summer Institute 2012

Purpose of today’s session

wilderresearch.org

Define the importance of ODR data to PBIS

Demonstrate a new tool that Wilder will be

introducing for schools that do not use SWIS

Clarify expectations from MDE regarding

tracking ODR data

Seek input from participating schools:

* Process of gathering ODR data

* To improve the usefulness of the tool

What is “ODR”? What is the “Big 5”?

wilderresearch.org

ODR = Office Discipline Referral

Big 5 = who, what, when, where, and how often

SWIS = School-Wide Information System, a tool

for gathering ODR data * This presentation is for schools that do NOT use SWIS

Why is ODR data important?

wilderresearch.org

Key outcome of PBIS is behavior in school

* At the school, district, region, and state level

ODRs are widely used indicators of problem

behavior and social climate in a school

Schools that implement PBIS with fidelity are

expected to see a drop in ODRs, because PBIS

uses evidence-based practices

(it really works!)

How can ODR data be used?

wilderresearch.org

Normative ODR pattern compared to results for

individual schools to assess effectiveness of Tier

1 and Tier 2 interventions

~ 5% get 6+ ODRs

~15% get 2-5 ODRs

~80% get 0-1 ODRs

How can ODR data be used?

wilderresearch.org

Individual data to be used for identification of

students for Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions

Summary data to be used for decision-making

and action planning: * Identify patterns, trends, changes over time, etc.

* Areas of success AND areas in need of improvement

ODR tracking spreadsheets

wilderresearch.org

Tool developed by Missouri PBIS

Two different spreadsheets

─ Aggregate (Big 5 Generator)

Tracks ODR Big 5 offenses School-wide

─ Individualized (Individual Data Collection Tool)

Tracks ODR data on an individualized basis

Big 5 Generator

Measures the “who, what, when, where

and how often”

Overall, big-picture view of ODR Data

Helps to plan school-wide interventions

wilderresearch.org

Features of the Big 5 Generator

wilderresearch.org

Per Day/Per Month Data Entry

─ How often problem behaviors are occurring

Behavior Data Entry

─What are the most frequent problem behaviors

Location Data Entry

─Where the problem behaviors are occurring

Time Data Entry

─When students are behaving inappropriately

Other features of the Big 5 Generator

wilderresearch.org

Triangle Graph

─ Charts the percentage of students with 2-5 ODRs and

6 or more ODRs (cumulative for the year)

─ Can help catch students who qualify for Tier II and

Tier III interventions early.

Other Features of the Big 5 Generator

wilderresearch.org

Monthly/Cumulative Graphs

─ Allows you to choose graphs you would like to print

and add to presentations

Per Day Generator

─ Calculates the median, 25th percentile, and 75th

percentile for a school with your enrollment and

compares it to SWIS national data.

Case study:

Wonderful middle school

Individual Data Collection Tool

wilderresearch.org

Collects individual student ODR data

Provides aggregated (school-wide) and

disaggregated (individual) graphs

Designed to summarize ODR data in a variety of

ways in addition to Big 5

Features of the Individual Data Collection Tool

wilderresearch.org

Big 5 Charts (who, what, where, when, how often)

─ Helps with Tier I interventions

Major ODR per student

─ Charts students by their student number

Majors: Digging Deeper

─ Allows to chart student behavior based on a variety

of factors

─ Can help catch students who qualify for Tier II and

Tier III interventions early

Other features of the Individual Data

Collection Tool

wilderresearch.org

Minors (Big 5)

─ Help with early identification of students who might

“fly under the radar” because they do not have any

major incidents

Triangle Generator
