Indialantic Elementary School Repairs to Steel Structures 

Scope of Work January 31, 2020 

  

Basis of Repairs:  The basis of the scope of work is the October 25, 2019 Report by TLC wherein an inspection, evaluation and recommendations were prepared for the Brevard County School District.  The repairs and preventive maintenance work shall be per the recommendations in this report.  Specific Work :  The work to be included shall include the following items  

Removal and replacement of metal roof deck and roof purlins on the covered play structure. Note: with the purlins removed for replacement, prepare and coat the top of the mating surface of the beams prior to installing new purlins. 

Removal and replacement of corroded portions of the brace tubes the diagonal braces on the NE and SE corners of the covered play structure.  New sections of brace tubing shall be welded in place where corroded portions were removed. 

Preparation and preventive maintenance coating of the entire covered play structure. 

Preparation and preventive maintenance coating of the diagonal bracing cables and eyebolt end fasteners. 

Preparation and preventive maintenance coating of the entire steel structure of the fabric covered sunshade. 

Preparation and preventive maintenance coating of the on‐grade anchor bolts and nuts. 

Maintenance Coating shall be proposed as base option, with a separate price for the Alternate Option.  

  

INDIALANTIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Steel Pavilion and Fabric Covered Sunshade 

Amended Scope of Work April 20, 2020 

  

This Scope of Work amends the previously issued Assessment and Recommendations by TLC dated August 23, 2019.  It adds requirements for Surface Preparation prior to the application of coatings and specifies a required coating system (or equal alternate).  Additional Surface Preparation Requirements: In lieu of the mechanical surface preparation referenced in the TLC document, the surface preparation shall be a wet blast and sandblast to NACE number 2/SSPC ‐SP No. 10 – “Near White Metal” surface preparation standard, resulting in a 2‐3 mil profile to accept the coatings. Brevard County Schools reserves the right to hire an independent third party NACE inspector to evaluate the surface preparation during the work in order to verify compliance to the NACE/SSPC standard.   The contractor must meet these requirements in order to proceed with the coating application.  Blast Media and paint chip containment/collection To the best of our knowledge, the District does not believe the existing previous coatings have any heavy metal components (lead, cadmium, & chromium), since the structure was originally built in early 2000.  Therefore, the expected level of containment/collection shall be only nominal per NIOSH standards for Abrasive Blasting.  SBBC Environmental Health and Safety is taking samples for testing and if the results indicated an unacceptable level of metals, the project will be stopped and requirements revisited.  The contractor shall be responsible for disposal of all blast debris generated from the surface preparation activities.  The Recommended Coating   In lieu of the “marine grade primer and paint” referenced in the TLC Assessment and Recommendations document, the coating system shall be (2) coats of Sherwin Williams 646 FF at 4‐6 mills per coat plus 2 top coats of the paint specified in the TLC Recommendations.  The coatings shall be applied in accordance with the Manufacturer’s product data sheets.  “Or equal Equivalent” products must be approved in writing by the Project Manager.
