Who we are

Just four months ago Louise Wilson,

Rob Dyke, Ewan Davis and myself

formed HANDI. We recognised theneed and opportunity for a collaborative

organisation to support health and care

app developers.

Here is our story.

HANDI is a not-for-prot Community

Interest Company created by a diverse

group of people to promote our sharedvision.

Supporting developers of health and care

apps to disrupt, innovate and cooperate totransform health and care.

HANDI wants to enable the creation

of apps to transform wellbeing and the

delivery of health and care.

We will do this by:

Facilitating learning, networking and partnerships betweenthose at the frontline of health and care who understand therequirements with those who have the skills, tools and resourcesto deliver innovative solutions.

Encouraging the creation of the technical and culturalenvironment in which apps can thrive, inter-operate and be

orchestrated to work together for the benet of patients, carers,service users and the health and care professionals that providetheir care.

We believe that apps can help us transform the way we promotewellbeing and deliver health and care in ways that traditional IThas so far substantially failed to do.

This is because apps are much quicker and easier to develop anddeploy than traditional software applications and because theapp paradigm and the development approach that goes withit is easier to engage front line health and care staff, patients,services user and carers. This will help ensure apps solve realproblems and work for the people who they are intended tohelp.

We believe that by supporting the emerging app community andpromoting their needs and interests we can increase the speedwith which the promise of apps can be realised.

and open company seeking to engage

conversation and to promote developmentand innovation. These ideas are reected in

our branding.

We want to welcome everyone and we want to engage ourcommunity members in lively, informal, helpful and productiveconversations.

We want to combine these ideas of openness and inclusivitywith the health and care domain. The use of the fresh blue andgreen colours and clear and clean lines seeks to reect elementsof health-related design.

We want to achieve a healthcare feel but not be too clinical,striking a balance between the gravity and focus of the sectorwe are working in with the open and friendly image we wish toportray as a company. The graphics and designs that we use arelively and engaging and reect our brand ethos.

Our Workshops

Newcastle

The rst HANDI workshop hosted by Newcastle University

Business School attracted a capacity crowd of 80+ delegatesincluding patients and service users, clinicians and otherhealthcare professionals and software developers.

There was a real buzz in the room helped along by a liveTwitter feed projected during the meeting with tweets from the

audience and those following on Twitter from around the world.

The event spawned a core of people who are now taking theNorth East HANDI Cluster forward and generated articles inthe press and on various health and care blogs.

London

The HANDI 2nd launch workshop took place in London on the

30th May and attracted 80 + delegates who learnt how HANDImight help them and heard from speakers providing clinical,technical, legal and patient perspectives.

The meeting was followed by many lively conversations overdrinks and canaps while delegates enjoyed the view over the

Old Bailey and beyond. A number of people volunteered to getactively involved in the London Cluster which we launched atthe event.

Our website has allowed us to register interest and promote

our launch events. It also allowed us to disseminate outputs fromour work shop and initiate discussion of themes of importanceto app developers. We have used text, pictures and video to helpcommunicate effectively.

We continue to build a much richer web platform that will help

us to support our community more effectively. This will include:

Discussion forums A knowledge base with documents, video and podcasts Training material A database to help match people with resources and partners Facilities to support our local clusters and manage the

administration

Our Future

Plans

HANDIs future plans include expanding our network of local

clusters to give us good coverage of the UK. We have welladvanced plans for West Yorkshire and Central Scotland andhope to extend further to include South Wales, the NW, SW andEast Anglia.

We plan to develop our activities in local clusters in ways that

reect what members of each cluster want but this is likely toinclude:

Meetings and training courses Networking and speed dating events Hackathons

We are about helping app developers

produce the right app as quickly and

efciently as possible and deploying itwith all those who might benet from

it. We want to do this by exploiting the

power of collaborative working using

social networking, crowd sourcing and

internet technology, but also recognising

the importance of face-to-face contact and

human relationships between all of those

in our community.
