Joshua 3:7, 5:13-15; 24:1-33

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 21

Joshua, what did God promise you when he told you to lead his people? (3:7)

Sir, I understand that you met Joshua near Jericho one day. Please tell me what he asked you and what you replied. (5:13-14)

Sir, What was it you asked Joshua to do and did he do it? By the way, could you please tell me what your job is? (5:15)

Joshua, why did you gather all the people together at Shechem? (24:1)

Joshua, after you reminded them of what the Lord had done for them, what did you tell them to do? (24:14)

You really challenged them, Joshua. What was it you said? (24:15)

Excuse me, Priest. Please tell me how the people responded to Joshua’s challenge? (24:16-18)

Please tell me what happened to Joshua, sir. I know that you were there. (24:28-33)

Imagine you are a news reporter interviewing some of those who were led by Joshua to the Promised Land. You have been given questions to ask. Make up the answers from what the Bible says. All the Bible verses that are given are in the Book of Joshua.

What happened after that, Priest? (24:19-24)

You are a scribe. I heard that you had work to do that day. Please explain about that. (24:25-26)

PRAYER SPOTThis week we remember the people in Scalpay, Bracadale and Acharacle, three communities in the west of Scotland.

Pray for those who live in remote communities, asking the Lord to show them that there are advantages in not living in towns and cities. Pray that God will prepare young people if they do have to move away.

God’s plans for all of his people are good. Ask the Lord to open your heart to seek his plan for your life and to make you willing to accept it and live it.

JOSHUA’S CHALLENGE

‘Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve ... but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.’

CHOOSE - have you chosen to serve the Lord for the rest of your life?

THIS DAY - Today is the only day we have. Yesterday is gone. For some people tomorrow will never come. Today is the only day we know that we have to make this life-changing choice.

WHOM - Those who follow Jesus serve a person. Jesus, our Saviour, is alive today.

YOU WILLSERVE - Christians live a life of service. They serve the Lord, trying to live their lives as he wants them to do.

They also live to serve those around them. Jesus served others and his followers do the same.

If you are ready to answer Joshua’s challenge, fill your name in the blank spaces.

I, .........................., choose for myself this day whom I

will serve. I, ..........................., will serve the Lord.

Now ask God to help you.

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 22

The last four lessons have been about great men of God: Abraham, Joseph, Moses and Joshua. The Bible passages you explored for each person are given below. Looking up the passages, compile five questions on each of these stories and use your questions to check how much the others in your class remember. Make sure you know the answers first as they might ask you the same things!

PRAYER SPOTThis week we remember the people in Shawbost, Coigach and Dingwall, especially the young folk.

Dingwall is a busy town, Shawbost is a village in the west of the Isle of Lewis and Coigach is a rural area in which the main centre is Achiltibuie. That is where the Coigach church services are held.

Life is full of puzzles and challenges, and in that way the Christian life is no different. However, Christians can take their puzzles to the Bible and try to find answers there.

Abraham, Joseph, Moses and Joshua were verydifferent from each other and they lived in quitedifferent situations. But they had some things in common. Unscramble the letters to discover what they were.

HTYE TSUETDR NI GOD.

HYET AMED IMTSKAES.

EHYT EMT RPSBOLME NI LFEI. GOD SUDE HTME OT OD IHS LIWL.

Abraham, Joseph, Moses and Joshua all made some discoveries. Unscrambling the letters will show you them.

GOD SPEKE IHS PMOSISER.

GOD EEPXTCS BOEEICNED. GOD IGSEV CRUEGAO ADN TSHERGNT.

GOD SI AAWSYL IWHT IHS EPPOEL.

If you have put your faith in God, you will make the same discoveries as Abraham, Joseph, Moses and Joshua.

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 23MISSIONSCENE

WHAT ARE MISSIONARIES?Describe what missionaries are and what they do.

Now work through the worksheet. You may be surprised by some of the things you discover.

QUALIFICATIONSThe only qualification you need to be a missionary is that you are a Christian. Of course, if

you are going to be a missionary doctor, nurse, teacher or water engineer, you need years of

training. But to be a missionary the basic qualification is to be a

Christian.

Are you a Christian? If the answer is yes, you should also

be a missionary.

If you are not yet a Christian, please think hard about it.

WHERE?Most people think of missionaries working

in Africa, India or other faraway

c o u n t r i e s . B u t missionaries are needed wherever there are peoplewho are not

Christians.

Missionaries are needed in your

school, among your friends, perhaps

even in your home.

TO WHOM?Many people become Christians through

friends who are believers.

Think of it this way. If you have good news you wouldn’t be a true friend if you didn’t tell your friends the news.

The best news in the world is that Jesus is the Saviour of all who put their faith in him.

HOW?If you are a Christian, be yourself. The more you grow to love Jesus the more he’ll put it in your heart to tell others about him in a gentle and sensitive way.

Make a list of practical and sensible ways in which you might share the good news.

Page 6: BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 21 3 BI… · Excuse me, Priest. Please tell me how the people responded to ... Scripture Union publish notes that give you a few verses to read each

PRAYER SPOTYou will be a true friend if you pray for those you love and care for.

Divide your family and friends between the days of the week and then pray for them on ‘their’ day.

You might pray for people for a very long time before they become Christians. You might never see that. But being a missionary is a long-term contract with God. In fact, it’s a life-time job whatever you do to earn your living.

Every job has it’s tools and the missionary’s two most important tools are the Bible and prayer.

KEY VERSE‘Have no fear of ................disaster or of the ......... that overtakes the ............, for the .................... will be your ........... and will keep your foot from being ..................’ (Proverbs 3:25-26)

Tradesman have to learn to use their tools. Christians have to learn to use their Bibles and they can only do that by reading them.

Reading a short passage of the Bible daily is the best way to get to know God’s Word. Organisations like Scripture Union publish notes that give you a few verses to read each day and then a short explanation of them. They are not expensive and can be bought on-line as well as in Christian bookshops. Your Bible Class leader can give you Scripture Union’s address.

STARTING POINT - Paul’s letter to Philemon is very short. If there is time today inBible Class, read the whole letter through.

Talk about the letter together. Look for lessons on forgiveness, giving people a second chance and the difference God makes in the lives of those who trust in him.

What’s that got to do with being a missionary? Everything! It is you learning to use one of the tools of the trade - the Bible.

WISDOMTHE STORY OF BEZALEL

Exodus 35:30 – 36:1

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 24

God chose Bezalel to do a very important job. He, along with Oholiab and other talented and trained craftsmen, were to build God’s holy sanctuary. From Exodus 35:30-35 fill in the blanks to find out more.

What was their particular expertise? (v 32)

How did God prepare them? (v 31)

With whom were they filled? (v 31)

In what other crafts were they skilled?(v 35)

Who had chosen them? (v 30)

They had been given another ability. What was it? (v 34)

What else could they do? (v 33)

From whom did all their talents come?(v 35)

Bezalel and Oholiab are good examples of wisdom because they recognised the talents God had given them and used them to serve the Lord.

God made us in his image and one of the ways in which we are like God is that we can create things. We are wise when we use our creativity in good ways.

Wisdom and cleverness are not the same thing. Clever people can be very unwise. Not so clever people can have great wisdom. In the box on the left make a list of things that very clever people can do that are unwise or even bad. In the box on the right made a list of wise ways of using intelligence.

UNWISE CLEVERNESS

Eg - Planning how to cheat in exams.

WISDOM

Eg - Studying to pass exams!

PRAYER SPOTThis week we remember the people of Point, Fortrose, Gairloch and Kinlochewe. They are all in the north of Scotland.

Remember young people who are under pressure with work at school or at home, especially any who have to care for a disabled parent, brother or sister.

Ask God to help you to recognise and use the talents he has given you.

Point

Fortrose

Gairloch &Kinlochewe

Talk about your talents with the others in your class. Now list what they say your talents are along with those you already knew about. Then beside each talent write how you can use it in a way that will please God. Remember, all your talents are gifts from God.

Now write a short thank-you prayer to God for the talents he has given you. Ask him to help you to use them to please him and help others.

If you were able to ask for anything at all, what would you ask for?

WISDOMTHE WISDOM OF SOLOMON

1 Kings 3:5-28

What would you ask for yourself?

What would you ask for your family?

What would you ask for the world?

When God told King Solomon that he would give him whatever he wanted, the king didn’t ask for anything at all - at first. What did he say? Complete both sentences from 3:6. using your own words.

Lord, you were very kind to

my father, David, because ...

Lord, you arestill showing kindness to

Solomon became king after his father, David. He was still a fairly young man. In fact, he was so overwhelmed by what he had to do, what did he feel like? (v 7)

What did Solomon ask for? Copy 3:9.

Solomon asked for a discerning heart. Circle those things that you think would be included in that.

God was so pleased with what Solomon asked for, what else did he say he would give the king? (3:13)

PRAYER SPOTThis week we remember the people in Perth, Glenelg and Fort William. Pray for church services, Sunday Schools and Bible Class-es. Pray that visitors who go will feel welcome, and ask the Lord to encourage those who attend church to invite their friends to join them.

Pray especially for those who are lonely, whether young or old.

Life can feel a bit scary at times, especially when we don’t know the direction we want to go. But God has a plan for each one of his people and he will lead and guide.

The story of how King Solomon dealt with the two women who brought the baby to him shows that God gave Solomon what he had asked for.

Later Solomon wrote the Book of Proverbs and many of the proverbs are about wisdom. Here is one. Try to memorise it as you find each word in the grid.

THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM, AND

KNOWLEDGE OF THE HOLY ONEIS UNDERSTANDING. (Proverbs 9:10)

THE BOOK OF PROVERBS

Proverbs are found in every language. Here’s a common English Proverb - ‘A watchedkettle never boils.’ That means that if you stand watching and waiting for something tohappen, it seems to take ages.

The proverbs in the Bible are about all sorts of things. Look up Proverbs 20 and try to find proverbs about the following subjects. Write the verse number beside the subject.

Choose one proverb from the chapter that has something to say about your home life.

Choose one proverb from the chapter that has something to say about your friendships.

These proverbs are thousands of years old, but they still apply today.

PRAYER SPOTThis week we remember the people in Glenurquhart and Fort Augustus - that’s one congregation, and those in St Andrews too. St Andrews is a newer congregation. Many of those who attend there are students at the university.

Pray for young people who have just left home, that they will be made welcome in their new churches.

Life can be scary, but those who believe in Jesus find him to be a strong friend in whom they are absolutely safe for time and for eternity. Is Jesus your Saviour and your strong friend? Pray for his safety.

Copy the proverb in verse 19.

Now work out the wisdom of that proverb.

What does a gossip do?

How do you feel when you tell friends something in confidence and they pass it on to others?

Would you trust someone who did that?

Therefore, should we trust those who gossip?

What is the Bible’s advice about gossips? (the second half of the verse).

Is that good advice?

One last thing about gossiping. We all know how nasty it is when people gossip about us, but we must be careful not to

become gossips ourselves. It’s very easy to pass on little interesting

snippets of information because it makes us feel important to know what others don’t know. But it’s a sure way to lose friends.

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 27WISDOM

THE BOOK OF JAMES

There are two kinds of wisdom - worldly wisdom and heavenly wisdom. Look at the boxes below and tick those that show heavenly wisdom and cross out those that show worldly wisdom. Then make up one of each.

GOING THROUGHTOUGH TIMES (1:12)

LISTENING AND DOING (1:22)

FAITH IN ACTION (2:17)

FAVOURITISM (2:1)

GOOD AND EVIL (4:7-8)

GOOD SPEECH (3:9-10)

WEALTH (5:1-6)

PATIENCE (5:7)

PRAYER (5:13-14)

If I make friends with the teacher’s son, I’m more likely

to get into the football team.

If I read my Bible, I’ll discover more about God.

If I tell the truth, I may get into trouble but at

least I’ll be honest.

If I steer clear of troublemakers, I’ll

not get into trouble.

If I tell a little white lie, it will get me out of

trouble.

If I buy one lottery ticket every

week. I’m sure to win a fortune sometime.

In his letter James gives wise teaching on a number of practical subjects. Show what he says on the following subjects by writing one sentence on each of them.

THE FUTURE (4:13-16)

Page 14: BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 21 3 BI… · Excuse me, Priest. Please tell me how the people responded to ... Scripture Union publish notes that give you a few verses to read each

PRAYER SPOTThis week we remember the people in Campbeltown and Inverness. There are two big Free Church congrega-tions in Inverness and another just outside the city.

Pray for the young people in each of these three very different places. Ask the Lord to bless any who have problems, either at home or at school.

We’ve all done things that were unwise. Pray for forgiveness.

Ask God to give you the gift of wisdom. True wisdom comes from him alone.

Inverness

Campbeltown

Choose two of the subjects on the front of the sheet, writing one at the top of each of the columns below.

Now try to write some worldly wisdom on each of them. When you’ve done that think about the differences between heavenly wisdom and worldly wisdom.

Spend a minute or two quietly asking God to help you to be wise with his wisdom.

The wisest thing that anyone can do is to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and to love and serve him.

Jesus often taught by telling stories. Draw an eight part cartoon to illustrate his story of the two builders and their houses.

WISDOMTHE TWO HOUSES

Matthew 7:24-29

What did the two men do the same?

What did they do differently?

The foundation of a building is what holds it together. A house built without an adequate foundation will eventually develop cracks that will become serious structural faults.

Foundations, in relation to life, are what we believe. We build our lives on what we believe. Our beliefs, whether Christian or otherwise, are what determine how we live. After each of the following beliefs write one sentence to say how this would affect day-to-day living.

I believe that family life is important.

I believe that there is no god and no life after death.

I believe in every person doing whatever they think is right for them.

I believe in God and that Jesus came to be our Saviour.

PRAYER SPOTThis week we remember the people in Lochbroom, Kilmallie and Bishopbriggs. Pray for the churches and the communities.

Remember any young people who have health problems, either short or long term. Ask the Lord to give them patience to cope, and healing if that is his good will for them.

Make a list of things for which you should praise God and thank and praise him for each one of them.

Remember to praise him for his greatest of all gifts, his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

This story is often called The wise and the foolish builders. The wise builder built on a firm foundation and the foolish builder just built on sand.

Copy what God tells us in 1 Corinthians 3:11.

Think of Christ as the foundation of your life, and that is what he is if you are a Christian. If you are not, perhaps now is the time to makethat life-changing decision.

Now imagine the different parts of your life as bricks in a wall founded on Christ. Write down some parts of life that should be different in the Christian. Some are given to start you off.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

It is easy, but wrong, to think of wisdom as cleverness. You don’t have to be clever to be wise and you don’t have to be adult to be wise. Wisdom is for you right now!

Without looking up your Bible (unless you really need to!) write notes on what you remember. You could do this as a class rather than individually. Then try to think up a question on each subject to ask your teacher or discuss with your class.

Here are two proverbs about wisdom taken from the Book of Proverbs. You’ll find all their words in the grid.

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 30 TIME TO TALK

I’ve listened to all this stuff about wisdom and it’s not for me. I reckon that we should all do what’s right for us. It’s like this, if it gets me out of trouble to tell a lie, then that’s fine. No trouble!

And all this stuff about God giving wisdom. If God exists and he wants to give everyone wisdom, zap! everyone’s wise. And as most people are fools that disproves God. For me, that’s the subject done. Sorted.

I’m not sure about wisdom. Thelessons said that being wise andbeing clever are not the same thing.Maybe you don’t have to be wise tobe clever but I think you would need to be clever to be wise. Anyway, I think sometimes it’swise to do things that might notbe quite right. Like not telling the whole truth to save a row like, what my mum says, ‘Peace at any price.’ And if that’s wisdom, can God really mean you to do ‘iffy’ things.

There’s such a lot in the Bible about wisdom I guess it must be really important.

I would never call myself wise, not out loud anyway, or I’d be laughed out the school! And that would be by my teachers!!!

But maybe it’s something I’ll have to work on. I’ll think about it.

Sometimes Christians give the impression that they’ve got life sorted. It’s not like that. Life is comfusing, but those who believe in Jesus know that he has promised to be with them - and that means right through the confusing and hard bits too.

How do I get the kind of wisdom the Bible speaks about. Do I ask God, and he makes me wise, just like that?

Psalm 14:1 says, ‘The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”’ I suppose foolishness is the opposite of wisdom, but is that not a bit over the top?

Life is SO confusing! My friends tell me it’s stupid to go to church. In Bible Class I’m told it’s the wise thing to do. Sometimes I don’t know what I think myself! I just hear what other people say.

I like the story of the wise and foolish builders and I think I understand about Jesus being the foundation of a Christian’s life. But how do you make that work in practice?

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 31

In the left-hand column make a list of those who have, or have had, authority over you. Top the list with whoever had the earliest authority over you and complete it with the most recent authority, Put a tick or a cross beside them depending on whether you think their authority was good or bad.

THE STATE

Find your answers in the passage.

How do we know that the authority of the state comes from God?

What is our responsiblity as citizens?

If we rebel against a state that is ruling justly, against whom are we rebelling?

How can we be free from the fear of authority?

Why do we pay taxes?

What else do we owe to those placed in authority over us?

PUBLIC ETHICSTHE STATE

Romans 13:1-7

On the right-hand column list those over whom you expect to have authority in the future, at home, at work or in the community.

Because we live in a sinful world, authority is not always good and just.

From your experience, and from what you’ve observed, put a tick beside what you think those in authority should be like and a cross beside what they sometimes are like.

PRAYER SPOTThe Free Church has two congrega-tions in England. One is in Central London and the other in Cobham, in Surrey. Many of those who attend travel long distances to do so.

Pray for these churches, especially the young people who attend them. One of the difficulties they face is that people don’t see each other apart from on Sundays.

Pray for those who rule over us, asking God to give them wisdom to make good decisions.

TEN BIG QUESTIONSabout God-given authority

1 Under whose authority do rulers rule?

2 Why do we need authorities over us?

3 What is the name given to our system of state government?

4 How are those in authority appointed here?

5 How should we treat those in authority?

6 How does the Bible say the state should be funded?

7 What should our thoughts be about paying taxes?

8 List five things for which our taxes pay.

9 What does the Bible tell us in 1 Timothy 2:1-2?

10 Who is the source of all power and authority? (Matthew 28:18)

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 32

Last week we looked at the authority of the state over citizens. But what if the state is undemocratic or abusing its power? Does the Bible apply then?

Unscramble the words to discover the situation in Jesus’ day and homeland.

The teachers of the law were so against Jesus that they were even prepared to trick himinto offending the Romans, whom they hated, in order to get him into trouble! But Jesuswas much more clever than they were. Read the story and then find each word in the grid.If a word is repeated in the story, it is only found once in the grid.

THAT JESUS PAID TAXES.

TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION

There have always been areas of tension between what the state demands and what the church teaches. Here are some topics to talk about.

There is a discussion about Islam and Christianity in school. Can the Christian say that Islam is wrong or is that breaking the law?

If young children are being taught in school that same-sex civil partnerships are as good as marriage, what does a Christian parent tell their children?

A nurse was suspended from her job for offering to pray for a seriously ill patient. Does that mean Christians can only pray for those who give their consent?

Is preaching that Jesus is God and the only Saviour against the law because it would cause offence to those of other religions?

If the law of the land says that applicants for a job should not be discriminated against because of their religion, should a church consider employing a Hindu youth worker?

Which of these two is best?

In order to reduce the number of crimes, politicians are always looking for the causes of crime. Can you think of three things that are sometimes given as causes of crime?

Throughout history crime and punishment have gone together. Sometimes the punish-ment was made to fit the crime. At other times punishments have been brutal. When God called a people to be his own, he gave them rules about the punishment of crime.

Give the crimes committed and the punishments given in these two Bible passages.

Psalm 19

James Clerk Maxwell was born in 1831 in Scotland. He became a scientist and made discoveries that helped lead to the invention of radio, television and even satellite communication. James was a Christian, and in all his discoveries he said, ‘Look up through nature to nature’s God.’

Today the media makes it sound as though a scientist couldn’t possibly be a Christian. The truth is than many of today’s most clever scientists would say, along with James Clerk Maxwell, ‘Look up through nature to nature’s God.’

BIBLE CLASS: YEAR 3 - LESSON 39 TIME TO TALK

I think wars are all wrong. The people who get killed are not thepeople who decide to go to war.

On television you see the bodiesof soldiers being brought back to this country and none of them decided that the country should go to war.

And the people who are most badlyhurt and killed in wars are the poor victims who can’t get out the road of bombs and sniper fire. I don’t believe that there can be such a thing as a just war.

I think all Christians should go to the same church - Free Church, Church of Scotland, Baptists,Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the lot.

No wonder people don’t believe inone God when the people who saythey worship him won’t even meet in one church! We live in a crazy, crazy world!

I just don’t get all this stuff about governments being given their power from God. If God was interested in what the country’s leaders get up to, he’d zap the lot of them.

I reckon that politicians are in power for what they can get out of it. Have you ever met a retired politician who was poor? Oops! I’ve never actually met a retired politician at all! But that’s what I think and I’m sticking to it!

Pray for the congregations and for the communities they are in. Ask the Lord to help Christians to reach out to their neighbours with the good news of the Gospel. Pray that those who believe in Jesus might live lives that reflect him.

Jesus is the Light of the World, but he also said that we are lights that should be shining for him. If you are a Christian, is your life like a shining light? If you are not a Christian, ask the Lord Jesus to shine his light into your heart and to make you one of his own.

Write your own key verse, one that is special for you.

Are people really responsible for crimes they commit? Are lots of them not really victims of poverty, unhappy homes and things like that?

When should people reach the age of criminal responsibility? Is an 8 year old, a 10 year old, a 12 year old or a 14 year old really able to understand when he’s committing a crime rather than just being a pest?

Is Britain a Christian country? What is a Christian country anyway?

How can we respect leaders when they do stupid things? I think people have to earn respect rather than get it just because people have voted them into power.

Choose two of the key verses you have learned and say what they mean to you.

Congratulations on reaching the end of the Bible Class year.

This is a good time to have a very serious think about what the Bible means to you.

Remember the Bible is the Word of God and God does not tell lies.

The Bible tells us that Jesus is the one and only Saviour. As the Bible Class year ends, if you have not asked Jesus to be your Saviour, you may wish to give it some serious thought. You will never, ever regret becoming a Christian.

PRAYER SPOTThis week we pray for people all over the world.

Pray for Christians wherever they are, especially any who are suffering because of their belief in Jesus.

Pray for those who follow other religions that cannot offer them forgiveness of sins or the hope of heaven.

Pray for those who claim not to have any faith at all. Ask God to open their eyes and show them their need of Jesus.

Pray for missionaries at home and overseas. Ask God to bless their work and their words.

Pray for Christians who are trying to share their faith with their families and friends.

Pray for all ministers, that they might be given the right words to say and the right way of saying them.

Ask the Lord God to help you to remember what you have learned from his Word.

Pray that God will continue to speak to you through his Word and through his creation.

Pray for the other members of your Bible Class, that God will be with them too.
