Bill St. Lawrence is about as far away as one can get from Brockton High School these days. An engineer/geophysicist who specializes in polar ice, St. Lawrence is currently on the Alaskan Beaufort Sea Coast of the Arctic Ocean.

Bill spends about four months of each year in the Arctic, working on various engineering projects, which include overseeing the design and construc-tion of ice roads, bridges and structures, monitor-ing tundra conditions, and interfacing between in-dustry operations and state and federal agencies.

Bill earned an undergraduate engineering degree from Boston University, masters’ degrees in engi-neering and geophysics from Penn State and Montana State Universities and a PhD in civil en-gineering from Montana State University. He is president and founder of Polar Alpine, Inc. an en-gineering firm headquartered in Berkeley, CA. Es-tablished in 1982, Polar Alpine specializes in work in the cold regions of the world, including the Rus-sian and US Arctic. Prior to starting the company, Bill says, “I had been kicking around with an aca-demic/scientific career and decided I wanted a lit-tle more excitement; so here I am.”

The company’s work includes ice drill design, engineering and escape, evacuation and res-cue evaluations of Arctic off-shore structures, the design and construction-oversight of both on-shore and off-shore Arctic ice structures and a wide variety of environmental monitor-ing projects

When he is not chasing snowflakes, Bill and his wife Ana Maria divide their time between California and El Salvador.

Bill grew up in the Campello section of Brock-ton and attended West Junior High School.

If you were a music-lover in high school, you probably remember Donna Dart. A talented cellist, Donna is still delighting New England audiences, performing with a string quartet and play-ing chamber music gigs with The Vermont Symphony. She was a member of New Hampshire’s Granite State Symphony Orchestra for 13 years, retiring in 2007. She has also recently retired as chair of the string department at Concord Community Music School in Concord, NH.

Donna graduated from Boston University where she met her husband Brandt Denniston. After stints in North Carolina, Alabama and New Jersey, they built their “dream house,” a log home on a hilltop in Spring-field, NH. Donna’s 92 year-old mother also lives with them.

The couple has three sons: one touring as principal horn with Phantom of the Opera; one who is a trom-bone player and music educator in New York and a third who is assistant chair of the Psychology Depart-ment at Appalachian State University in North Caro-lina. They also have two grandchildren.

Though retired from full-time teaching, Donna still teaches private cello students and performs through-out northern New England. While at BHS, Donna and three other classmates, Kathy Monaghan Cullinane, Pat Iervolino Kilroy and Ann Ruth Jacobson Lipman, were founding members of the prestigious Greater Boston Youth Symphony which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Where are they now?

For the golfers in our group– this is for you! Subject: Sand Traps 80 yr.old man who was an avid golfer moved to a new town and joined the local Country Club. He went to the Club for the first time to play, but was told there wasn't anybody he could play because they were already out on the course. He repeated several times that he really wanted to play. Finally, the Assistant Pro said he would play with him and asked how many strokes he wanted for a bet. The 80 year old said 'I really don't need any strokes as I have been playing quite well. The only real problem I have is getting out of sand traps.' And he did play well. Coming to the par four 18th they were all even. The pro had a nice drive and was able to get on the green and 2-putt for a par. The old man had a nice drive, but his approach shot landed in a sand trap next to the green. Playing from the bunker he hit a high ball which landed on the green and rolled into the hole! Birdie, match and all the money! The Pro walked over to the sand trap where his opponent was still standing in the trap. He said 'Nice shot, but I thought you said you have a problem getting out of sand traps?' 'I do,' replied the old man. 'Please give me a hand.'

STROKE IDENTIFCAION:

During a BBQ, a friend stum-

bled and took a little fall -

she assured everyone that

she was fine (they offered to

call paramedics) ...she said

she had just tripped over a

brick because of her new

shoes.

They got her cleaned up and

got her a new plate of food.

While she appeared a bit

shaken up, Ingrid went

about enjoying herself the

rest of the evening Ingrid's

husband called later telling

everyone that his wife had

been taken to the hospital -

(at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed

away.) She had suffered a

stroke at the BBQ. Had they

known how to identify the

signs of a stroke, perhaps

Ingrid would be with us to-

day. Some don't die..... they

end up in a helpless, hope-

less condition instead.

It only takes a minute to

New Sign of a Stroke --------

Another 'sign' of a stroke is

this:

Ask the person to 'stick' out

his tongue. If the tongue is

'crooked', if it goes to one

side or the other , that is

also an indication of a

stroke.

‘60read this...A neurologist says

that if he can get to a stroke

victim within 3 hours he can

totally reverse the effects of a

stroke .... totally . He said the

trick was getting a stroke rec-

getting the patient medically

cared for within 3 hours,

which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE:

You only need to remember

the "3" steps- STR .

Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a

stroke are difficult to identify.

Unfortunately, the lack of

awareness spells disaster.

The stroke victim may suffer

severe brain damage when

people nearby fail to recog-

nize the symptoms of a

stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander

can recognize a stroke by

‘60“REMEMBER WHEN ”

TWO WOLVESTWO WOLVESTWO WOLVESTWO WOLVES

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two "wolves" inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jeal-ousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arro-gance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superi-ority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?" The old Cherokee simply replied,

"The one you feed."
