Bhangra

Bhangra originated from the Punjab region of India.

Bhangra is danced at weddings, parties and family celebrations. The dance rhythm is set by the dhols.

There are many types of dance, some are especially for men or women.

Bhangra is often danced in circles and uses a lot of arm and shoulder movement

Bhangra is an upbeat type of popular music associated with Punjabi culture.

It was developed in Britain in the 1980s by first and second generation immigrants from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan .

It is seen by some in the West as an expression of South Asian culture as a whole.

There are loads of Bhangra artists out there but perhaps the most well known is Panjabi MC. Who is known for his hit single ‘Mundian To Bach Ke’

Conventions in this genre

Bhangra Videos also have their own conventions like other genres, these include; dancers, a range of different scenes, the singer performing in more than one setting and fast pace editing.

The majority of Bhangra videos are fast paced, which helps to understand the song as you would not want to see a slow song with fast paced editing used.

Key Component: Dhol

The dhol is a large traditional North Indian drum played with 2 cane sticks.

The dhol is a drum that dates back to the 15th century. It was probably introduced to the Indian subcontinent via the Persian drum type dohol

The tension is adjusted to produce a bass and a treble sound. This extremely loud and echoes a lot.

Someone who plays the dhol is known as dholi .

Special expressions by the face, and also frequent rotation by the body is required to play the Dhol effectively.

Conclusion

To make this production a success, I would need to include all the key elements of the Bhangra. I would also need to make sure that my production is as accurate as possible.

Bhangra music would need to be done using traditional South Asian attire, as that would be the most effective way.

Bhangra lyrics are sung in Punjabi, which generally cover social issues or love.

Bhangra lyrics were generally kept simple on purpose by the creators of the genre because they knew that the youth did not understand complex lyrics which would have been used. So the lyrics were kept simple.
