The Explorers Festival is an event about entrepreneurship, innovation, open minds, idea generation and networking. Brought to you from the producers of TEDxEdges, Sillicon Valley comes to Lisbon and Sandbox Global Summit, the Explorers Festival 2013 will be the largest entrepreneurship event in Portugal.

In this one-week festival, future and up-and-coming entrepreneurs will be equipped with the knowledge, tools and inspiration they need to succeed.

More and more people are becoming entrepreneurs. With a growing unemployment rate not only in the Western world, we are witnessing one of the biggest booms of startups every single year.

But how do entrepreneurs acquire the tools, attitude and perseverance they need to survive in this aggressive and competitive economy?

The Explorers Festival is designed to be a hands-on-let’s-get-dirty experience so entrepreneurs have the critical skills to thrive.

Dear Participant,

Welcome to Explorers Festival, one of the biggest startups events in Europe! We are looking forward to meeting you at Central Station, in Lisbon. Central Station is the headquarters of Beta-i, a Portuguese non-profit organization that accelerates startups and fosters innovation in established companies to help them have a global impact.

The event is organized by Beta-i with full support of several universities in Lisbon and prestigious institutions, such as the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, Caixa Geral de Depósitos and the Luso-American Foundation, as well as international conference partners.

The Explorers Festival is divided into 3 key events:

• Explorers Bootcamp (Nov. 1st – 3rd), a three-day bootcamp organized by the Portuguese Navy Marine Corps, where only the toughest entrepreneurs survive;• Explorers Toolbox (Nov. 6th and 7th), for 2 days attend workshop and demos from the top startup providers in the world; and• Explorers Conference (Nov. 8th), one day conference that brings mentors, professionals and entrepreneurs from all over the world to share their insights with our startup community.

The Explorers Festival team has been working for several months on this world class entrepreneurship event with full dedication and passion, in order to achieve the goals we set for ourselves – greatness.

Cynthia Hellen is a Peruvian-American entrepreneur, writer, producer, director,

and speaker on social entrepreneurship and technology in emerging markets. She

has moderated panels and run workshops in the USA, Mexico and, of course,

Peru. In 2012, she became the recipient of a Bloomberg Businessweek Award

for empowering women in a remarkable way, and she was named Social

Innovation Rockstar by We Love Bold. Her work has been profiled by

Bloomberg Businessweek, EcoSalon and Pipeline Women, and she’s been

fortunate to receive a 2012 Big Ideas Festival Scholarship.

CYNTHIA HELLEN

José is a Portuguese industrial designer and, for the last 20 years, he

has been dedicated to products; their place in the culture and the

interaction with people throughout time. He is co-founder of Beta-i, a

non-profit organization dedicated to entrepreneurship, based in

Lisbon. For Explorers Festival, José Manuel dos Santos identifies

designers who made a difference through their ventures in society.

André Marquet is a board member at Beta-i, a Lisbon based non profit

that accelerates startups and fosters innovation in established

companies to help them have a global impact. He was the leader of

several projects, including TEDxEdges - the first TEDx in Portugal - and

Sandbox Global Summit 2012 in Lisbon. Currently, he is one of the

curators of Explorers Festival, coordinator for Startup Weekend

Portugal and kick-starter of LisbonChallenge.

EXPLORERS BOOTCAMP Only the toughest survive!The Explorers Bootcamp is a tough’n’up, intensive training weekend for Explorers: startup founders and CEOs, among others, who want to enhance their leadership skills.

Set in Lisbon, it will be coordinated by the Portuguese Navy Marine Corps, where Explorers will acquire leadership skills. The goal? To force startup founders and potential founders to really test their limits prior to startup incorporation.

EXPLORERS CONFERENCE Get inspired and network away!The Explorers Conference is a new kind of conference, where it’s all about the participants.

This conference will explore a range of topics from science startups, female entrepreneurship and personal marketing, leveraged by a great group of international speakers.

The Portuguese Marine Navy Corps (Portuguese: Fuzileiros) have their direct origin in the oldest permanent military unit of Portugal, the Terço of the Navy of the Crown of Portugal, created in 1618. However, since 1585, specialized troops existed to provide artillery and riflemen in Portuguese warships. The Terço of the Navy was soon considered an elite unit, also being responsible for the security of the King of Portugal. Nowadays, they are a special unit of Portuguese Navy, specialized in amphibious warfare, coastal reconnaissance, unconventional warfare, guerrilla warfare, raids, maritime interdiction and boarding operations.

THE PORTUGUESE NAVY MARINE CORPS

The Explorers Bootcamp is a leadership and motivational skills training led by the Portuguese Navy Marine Corps essential for

entrepreneurial and corporate success.

COMMANDER BASTIAN DE FREITASPORTUGUESE NAVY MARINE CORPS

Commander Bastian de Freitas initiated as a cadet in the navy school around 1994 and finished his education on Marine Military Science in 1999. His first steps into his career were made at Unidade de Meios de Desembarque (UMD). He was a Commander for two years at CF21 and in 2007 he was transfered to the Portuguese Navy Marine Corps (Estado-Maior do Comando do Corpo de Fuzileiros) as chief of the subsection Operational Planning Process. He was part of many peacekeeping missions at the United Nations in Timor-Leste and, more recently, in Afghanistan, under the supervision of NATO. He received many awards and decorations.

MANUEL ROSA DA SILVAPT

Manuel Rosa da Silva began his career at PT, in 2000, as CFO of PTM.Com, a multimedia unit of the Pay-TV division (PT Multimedia). During the last 10 years, he held key management roles in the main domestic business units of PT. He serves as Member of the Board of Directors of the domestic business company (PT Portugal), and he also served as a Member of the Board of Directors of the pay-TV division (PT Multimedia) from 2006 until the company’s spin-off in 2007. He was Group Director of Corporate Finance from 2002 to 2003 and Director of Investor Relations from 2001 to 2002. Prior to joining PT, he served, in London, as Vice-President of Merrill Lynch, Associate Director of M&A at Morgan Grenfell, Associate in SG Warburg, and Consultant at KPMG Consulting.

FRANCISCO FONSECAANJE/ANUBISNETWORKS

Francisco Fonseca is the CEO of AnubisNetworks and Board Member at the National Association of Young Business People (ANJE). He graduated with a degree in Management and Computer Science at the University of Minho. He has extensive experience in the high tech industry, services and the consulting fields. Francisco often provides talks about entrepreneurship at universities. He firmly believes that entrepreneurs are a relevant part of the answer for finding solution in the existing economic scenario.

JOSÉ MIGUEL SERUYACATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF PORTUGAL

José Seruya is a professor at the Catholic University of Portugal, running subjects related to Leadership, Institutional Communication and Personal Development. He has been administrator at Unicer, Manager at Fricasa and Galp and Director of IPAM. He has relevant experience in businesses and startups, as well as in the setting up of commercial operations in Spain. He has also worked as a commercial manager in a multinational oil company. He has a PhD in Management from Université Jean Moulin and a degree in Sociology from ISCTE.

RICARDO DINIZPORTUGAL OCEAN RACE @RICARDODINIZPT

Ricardo Diniz, originally from a fishing village in Portugal, has traveled the world fast and furious as an offshore sailor and young entrepreneur. Brussels nominated him European Ambassador for the Oceans. Shortly after he was a finalist in Portugal’s Most Motivating Person Award. CNN, BBC, National Geographic and pretty much every single major media entity in Portugal have generously covered Ricardo’s projects since 1996. Co-Founder and President of the Portugal Ocean Race, Ricardo will share his thrilling experience with us.

WALTER PALMA - CGD Walter is currently Investment Director at Caixa Capital, the venture capital and private equity arm of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), Portugal’s largest financial group. Walter has 25 years of professional experience, both in Portugal and abroad. He began his career with KMPG Canada in Toronto, having transferred to the Lisbon (Portugal) office in 1991, where he specialized in financial services sector and corporate finance. He later moved to Banco Finantia, a small Portuguese investment bank, where he exercised roles of Head of Research and Corporate Finance Director.

ROMAN GEBHARD - LUNAR @rogebhardRoman is currently at Lunar as Managing Partner in, Germany, since 2007. He works in industrial design and design strategy. With a degree from the Art Centre College of Design, Roman considers himself an entrepreneur. His first design job was at Modus Design as a Junior Industrial Designer. He co-founded dialog05 – five industrial designers, based in Munich, working on a conceptual project – born in 2005 and still active nowadays. One year later, he became a design manager and industrial designer at designaffairs/Siemens.

PAUL DOWLING - DREAMSTAKE @PaulmdowlingPaul is the founder of Dreamstake, Europe’s largest online support platform for tech startups. He has worked in the tech sector for 30 years, including 10 years at Cap Gemini. He has always been at the cutting edge of technological innovation, having been involved with LCDs, enterprise software and now sits at the centre of the London TechCity startup scene.Dreamstake attracts the latest startups across Europe and helps them connect with the resources they need: Knowledge, People and Investment. As part of his involvement in Dreamstake, he promotes the interests of startups at events and through some significant partnerships.

5:00 pm: X-Ray of Portuguese startupsThe latest figures of the Portuguese business environment will be the focus of this presentation. You will get the opportunity to do an X-ray of the Portuguese Startup scene.

RODRIGO BERNARDO - INFORMA D&BHaving worked his entire professional career in commercial and sales, Rodrigo joined Informa D&B 7 years ago to manage client portfolios. Since early this year, he has worked as Business Development Manager, looking for new businesses, partners and helping Informa D&B reach audiences, such as students, young entrepreneurs and startups. He aims to make newcomers aware of the importance of finding, reaching, knowing and evaluating providers, competitors and market size since early stages.

CARRILHO DA GRAÇA - CARRILHO DA GRAÇA ARQUITECTOSJoão Luís Carrilho da Graça is an architect graduated from Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa, in 1977. His work has been recognized with several awards, including medal from L’Academie d’Architecture Française, in 2012; the title of “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Republic, in 2010; “Prémio Pessoa”, in 2008; the “Order of Merit” by the Portuguese Republic, in 1999; and the “AICA Award” by the International Association of Art Critics, in 1992. Carrilho da Graça was distinguished with the “AIT award 2012 – transportation” for the Pedestrian Bridge over the Carpinteira Stream and with the “Frate-Sole” International Prize of Sacred Architecture for the Santo Antonio’s Church in Portalegre, in 2012.

CARLOS REBELO - 3DECIDECarlos Rebelo has an extremely diverse professional path with focus on software engineering and management. He encourages experiences and knowledge sharing, as he believes people are a central point of his professional life. In 2007, he started a new professional phase, that has allowed him to dedicate a large amount of his time to entrepreneurship and the creation of the SocialDigital. Later, he integrated the founding team of 3Decide, that gathers some ‘heavy weight names’ of graphic computing in Portugal. Carlos Rebelo is launching his innovative products to the market, based on Urban 3D, augmented reality and interactive panoramas. Creativity is one of his key ingredients.

6:30 pm: Interactive 3D marketingRelationship between large corporations and startups and how both business models can be integrated is the focus of this presentation. Carlos will also present a "3Dfied" case study.

SEBASTIÃO DE LANCASTRE - EASYPAY Sebastião got involved for the first time with electronic payments at Unicre, where he was member of the VISA Europe board that settled the e-commerce standards. At Unicre, he also developed the first CRM and several marketing and business development campaigns. In 2000, he founded two companies that he is still managing today – Easypay (payment systems) and What’s On (digital marketing agency). His background in Systems Engineering combined with a long experience in marketing allows him to leverage his skills and develop new and innovative solutions for businesses and organizations. In 2010, Sebastião was responsible for the big data project known as Pordata (Portuguese Data Based from Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos) and also “Eu-Acredito”, a movement that gathered 11,000 youngsters to get a glimpse of Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Portugal.

6:00 pm: Mobile payments: what’s the future?Smartphones came to revolutionize the way we carry our personal information and lately they became a place where we store more vital info like ID cards, insurance details and even the use of banking. But what about payments, will it work the same way?

This July, Lisbon was the stage of the first sneak peek of the Explorers Festival, unveiling the concept, speakers and agenda of this disruptive, entrepreneurship event – which will be one of the biggest startup events in Europe in 2013, and definitely the largest in Portugal.The Explorers Basecamp included an interactive discussion - “Beyond Exabytes” - with some of the best minds working on Big Data, including experts from Google US, SAP Ventures, Carnegie Mellon and Crowd Process who discussed the next trends in the tech world.
