Love is in the air, and we know it shouldn’t only be celebrated in February, but it’s hard to not get a feel for the occasion when it’s literally all around us. Pressed for time, and unsure of what to get your loved one? Go down an alternate route and pamper him/her with waffles in bed – find out which gadget to buy on page 72 – or a signature Cipriani dessert (page 54).

We stepped into a couple’s gorgeous duplex at Jumeirah Heights (page 32), and took a peek at their lovely home, packed with fashionable elements. The Belgravia Mews House (page 41) is also one to stem inspiration from, particularly if you’re looking for a sophisticated overhaul.

As always, the magazine features trendy rooms in season (page 26), a moodboard packed with red and pink accessories to covet (page 23), and new products to get your hands on. Those considering investing or renting a one-or two-bedroom home, can search through Better Homes property listings (from page 56), and read all about Jumeirah Lake Towers (page 46 and 48).

Happy Reading.

A bedside table is an incredibly simple piece of furniture, yet it has the ability to instantly transform the space - if the right colour, texture, and style is chosen. This versatile James Colonial Berry red pinewood chest of drawers is perfect for those who constantly alter their interiors. The hue complements a dark or light coloured bed frame, and injects a bit of retro/vintage style to a shabby chic scheme, while balancing out a contemporary setting. Dhs1,750 at Marina Home.

DéCOR ST YLEModern, emotional and comfortable. i’m interested in how we feel in a space and obviously how it looks. Comfort is the first essential, and there is no reason this cannot exist in a lovely room.

gO-TO STORES The Bowery Company, because it has a well-designed and-edited collection of homeware. O de Rose for gifts, Muji for the practical side of me – sorting and organising – and Zara Home. i don’t think i’ve ever left the store empty handed. it’s brilliant for the little things like bathroom accessories, towels, funky pillowcases, etc. i love that the stock is constantly being updatedso there is always something new in store too.

ShOP FOR wALLPAPER AT…Tissues d’Helene in Chelsea Harbour, london.

TOP TiPS FOR RUg ShOPPiNgPick out a few of your favourite rugs and try them out before committing to buying one. Don’t let practicality overshadow aesthetics; a beautiful rug can turn an anonymous room into your room. since the rug is the most effective way of defining a space, don’t be tempted to skimp on size. size matters and a rug that is the wrong size can spoil a room, so be generous.

BEST hOME BUYThe eva Ziesel lacy X rug for our bedroom.

DESigN TRiCki am a great fan of trays as they are extremely useful. i use mine for corralling all sorts of things. They can be used on drink tables,

side tables with little vases of flowers on them, by beds, on coffee tables, in bathrooms, and the living room/entryway consoles for sunglasses and keys.

COLOUR COMBiNATiON TO TRYBlue and green for a bright room, and beige, white and silver for a soft room.

ON MY wiShLiSTA Charles Beckley bed - they are a family run business that has been operational since 1931 in the Bronx NY. The company makes the most amazing beds and headboards, and i’ve always wanted to own one.

Having a big balcony, and furnishing it as another room in the house was

vital, as we are quite outdoorsy

Driving towards Jumeirah Heights reminded me of my trip to Greece, with the building’s white and blue

colour scheme making me reminisce the gorgeous scenery of Mykonos and Santorini. When I arrived at Dana Hourani’s duplex three-bedroom apartment, my first notion was that it felt like a fairytale home. The parquet flooring, white furnishing, light green tones, and frames, exude a cottage vibe, making it a lovely contrast to the bustling city for Dana, her husband, and baby girl. For those who aren’t familiar with the area, Jumeirah Heights sits at the opening of Jumeirah Islands, and residents here can head to the community club to make use of facilities

colours, and cuteness of the space – right from the gorgeous entryway packed with family photos. “I wanted to set the mood right from the entrance, as first impressions are always key,” she says. The tactile walls, and calming green hue wallpaper – from Fatin Interiors – draw attention instantly, tying the living and dining space together. “In my opinion, wallpapers are one of the most essential factors that make a house, a home,” she says. Dana’s bar is neatly tucked under the staircase - a custom-built unit. “The living room is quite a small space, and I wanted to maximise the use of each corner while keeping it neat and tidy,” she tells us. The TV cabinet was built in as well, and this holds photo frames, a large collection of books on fashion and

cars, and accessories. The aim for this home was to achieve

middle ground between having a villa and an apartment. “Having a big balcony, and furnishing it as if it were another room in the house was vital, as we are quite outdoorsy,” says Dana. The outdoor space is used to entertain guests, and you can often find Dana here, when the weather permits. Upstairs, the two bedrooms boast a minimalist theme, with the nursery being made up of all white furniture, and neutral earthy tones. “It’s calm and serene, and will make sense if our next child is a boy,” she says. The master bedroom pieces are from Pottery Barn, and comprise white and blue pastels, with a little wooden touch to give a cottage ambiance. “The inspiration came from wanting that bed and breakfast mood.” The lounge,

including the pool, gym, and tennis court, among other offerings.

Lebanese-national Dana Hourani has her foot in the fashion and music scene, and describes her community as calm and serene, while still being part of the city life. “We moved in two and a half years ago, and were sold when we saw the balcony space, view of the lake, Burj Al Arab, and Burj Khalifa in the distance,” says Dana. The duplex, designed by herself, was made cosy and as homely as possible to reflect the contrast between the indoors and outdoors. Pottery Barn, Bloomingdale’s Homes-Dubai, and Luz de Luna are some of her favourite go-to brands – the couch, dining table, and entryway console are from these stores.

Upon walking into Dana’s home, you can’t help but be awe-struck by the

Upon walking into Dana’s home, you can’t help but be awe-struck by the

in this household, with lampshade fixtures seen all around.

When questioned if Dana would like to enhance or transform any elements, she says, there really isn’t any space left to work on, and loves the look and feel at the moment.

How-to: Install a water feature In the backyard

Locat ion is keywhen considering where to put your water feature, think about how it will sit within your garden. If you have a separate area for entertaining, we recommend putting the water feature there. ensure it isn’t in the way of any paths or restricts access. also think about how it will look at night and whether you need it lit up. water and electricity outlets should reach the area, to make it simple to fill and power.

The s ize and shapeyour chosen design should fit in with any existing garden furniture and accessories, so it looks aesthetically pleasing. we recommend purchasing from a shop rather than online, as most good retailers should have staff on hand to recommend a suitable sized installation based on the size and shape of your garden.

Prep the arealevel the soil using a rake, making the ground ready to pour on the concrete base. you can buy concrete from garden centres, and mix it in a bucket – an electronic cement mixer is not necessary

for most dIy projects. the most important thing at this stage is to ensure the concrete dries properly – follow the instructions on the packet, paying special attention to adding water as it dries, to prevent cracks. If you want to paint or pave the concrete, this should be done prior to the fountain being added. Make sure the area is completely dry and set, before moving on to the next step.

Insta l l the fountainclear the walkway ahead of bringing the fountain home or getting it delivered. Making sure there are at least two of you to manoeuver the fountain into its correct place, to avoid injury. Put the water in before attaching the pump - switching it on without the water could cause it to burn out. Most fountains will have a ‘fill to’ line, so make sure to stick to this, or else it will not work properly.

Power uprun the electricity wire to the power point via a conduit in the grass. they are simple to dig out and cover with soil. Make sure no wires are left across the path, to avoid accidents. the power point should also be of the correct voltage

before plugging in. One of the benefits of living in the uae is that solar powered units also work well, so if you are keen to go green, research your options.

Maintenance issueslooking after your water fountain is key to its longevity, and we recommend changing the water at least once a week. chlorine tablets are available for around dhs15 from swimming pool shops, and these keep a fountain clean for three times as long as untreated water. Once the water is drained, use a washing up sponge or brush to remove any algae. the most important step is to know when exactly to call in the expert, particularly when water and electricity are concerned. If you are unsure about any aspect of the process, or if something goes terribly wrong, it’s definitely time to bring in help. the cost of calling in a professional will pale in comparison to the cost of an accident.

CLUTTER-FREE LIVING

Simple steps to make your home a t idy, c lean haven

1 . Analyse furnishingsThink about all the extra accessories or furniture pieces, as though you had to load up a mover’s truck with it. Would you pay to move these items into a new home? If not, chuck it or sell it off at the flea market.

2. Toss o ld towelsYou don’t really need to have a whole bunch of towels.

Chances are some might appear or feel worn out. Pick and choose the ones you need, and keep the soft, fluffy neutral-coloured ones. Bin or recycle the others.

3. Clear out ‘Only when’ c loth ingIf you haven’t worn a clothing item in a year or more, and keep it on hand to fit ‘only when’ you reduce,

or it comes back in season, it’s time to donate it. This excludes items like suits, gowns, and evening attire.

4. Give away p lants that don’ t sui t your personal i ty If you tend to travel, or have a bad habit of forgetting to water your plants, you should probably opt for ones that require less amount of time

and care. Orchids are great, as they need little water – every seven to ten days – and look gorgeous too.

5. Sel l of f o ld e lectronicsCellphones and laptops tend to pile up, now that we swap our electronics more often. Get rid off any technology that isn’t in use, and make space for the new.

Thomson, who has a namesake interior design firm, was asked to transform this home to give it a contemporary take on a Versailles palace. Luckily, this is in keeping with Thomson’s signature design philosophy, which he refers to as ‘pared-down classicism’. “I like to mix antiques and modern pieces, ultimately to create a livable, comfortable albeit elegant home,” he says. Initially the décor was quite drab or ‘ordinaire’ as Thomson’s mother would refer to it, and this led to a renovation including gutting of the interior walls and floors, and digging up a basement for extra space. “The client wanted a chic London pied-à-terre to stay after the theatre or dinner, for a night or two. Ask the expertsHousehold or community d i lemma? Our sk i l led panel is here to helpQ. Are there any outdoor areas where I can let my children run around during the cooler months?

A. Upon first sight Dubai may seem like a big urban jungle, look closer and you’ll find many beautiful outdoor areas perfect for the cooler months. In terms of parks, Mushrif Park near Uptown Mirdif, and Al Barsha Pond Park are two of my favourite hidden gems, offering green patches with fun areas such as playgrounds and model houses for kids to explore. we live in the desert. If you’re looking for more space, simply hop in the car and drive a little further afield. One of my favourite patches is Jebel Maleihah (also known as Fossil Rock), which has great BBQ and picnic spots to enjoy – you may also be lucky enough to do a bit of camel spotting while you’re at it. Q. I’d like to instal a swimming pool in my villa. Should I opt for concrete or fiberglass?

A. The option depends significantly on two main factors - the size, and shape of the required pool. In my opinion, from a maintenance perspective, I recommend fiberglass, as it is durable and unlike concrete, there are no risk of cracks or rusting steel. The options however are extremely limited when it comes to the size and shape, and in addition it costs more than concrete - if the size chosen is relatively small. When it comes to construction, a large percentage of the work will be done at a factory too. Study the options carefully and choose a reliable company to carry out the job. Mohamed Ayad

Q. I have adopted a dog, and wanted to know if I should buy pet insurance?

A. If your pet gets ill or is in an accident, the vet bills can reach into the thousands. Pet insurance could save you from making the painful decision of going into debt, or putting your dog down. If you have multiple pets, you can save on certain insurance policies. Many plans are customisable too, which means you can pick and choose what coverage you’d like on your policy. Before you apply for one, remember that you have to pay for the vet bill out-of-pocket first. Only after you pay, are you able to send in the paid bill to get reimbursed. It can be expensive, as there are deductibles, annual premiums, limits on pre-existing conditions, and exclusions for hereditary defects.

You can’t claim pre-existing health conditions. If your dog already has cancer, the dog insurance company won’t cover any treatments relating to the pre-existing issue. Benefit limits can be low as well. Be sure to read the fine print, as if you go with a cheaper plan, it’s not going to offer you and your pet much coverage. Some policies only cover accidents and illnesses, so be sure you know what you are paying

for. A few also have age-limits set within its plans, so if you have an older pet, it may have reduced coverage, or might not even qualify for coverage. Farah Al Khojai

Q. I’d like to invest in a one-bedroom apartment that I can rent out. Which area should I consider, so that I get good returns on a monthly basis?

A. JLT can be a good option to invest in, as it is close to Sheikh Zayed Road and has easy access by metro stations to all

the nearby landmarks. You can buy a good quality one bedroom apartment for around Dhs1.1 million, and rent it out for around Dhs7,000 on monthly basis (Dhs85,000 per year). Your monthly installment for the mortgage will be around Dhs4,500 (for 25 years mortgage and over), while the service charges and utility bills will be around Dhs3,500 per month. If you want to sell after ten years of purchase, considering as low as 3% appreciation a year, you can sell it for around Dhs1.43 million.Muhammad Faheem

TRIED & TESTEDWe review the latest gadgets

on the market

JM POSnER BElgIan WafflE MakER

lakElanD SWEET TREaTS WafflE STIck MakER

Making glorious, crispy-edged waffles quickly and easily is pretty simple with this gadget. The snazzy-looking pastel-shade waffle maker is compact too, and ideal for those with limited storage space.

What we like? This waffle maker comes with six scrumptious recipes, a measuring cup, and non-stick plates that make for an easy cleanup. All you have to do is pour your batter mix into the machine, and within minutes you’ll have six waffle sticks ready to serve with a dollop of ice cream, drizzle of honey, and sugar-soaked strawberries, at your next tea party, or children’s gathering.

What we didn’t like? Although the powerful heating element ensures waffles are ready within minutes, the machine gets very hot, making waffle extraction tricky.

To buy: Dhs129 at Lakeland.

coating, and you can wipe the whole machine down easily too. The ultimate outcome depends on the batter of course, but overall the machine is perfect for making large round waffles in a jiffy.

What we didn’t like? You need to do a test round, as the pan can get slightly steamy. However, once you’ve perfected the timing, and recipe, the entire process is simple.

To buy: Dhs250 at Tavola.

Waffles are the ultimate breakfast-in-bed treats, and we are certain your Valentine will agree too. Whether you like your Belgian waffles doused in maple syrup, with whipped cream and strawberries, or fried chicken on top, it’s all possible with this machine.

What we like? Cooking a waffle in this machine is really as simple as pouring the batter in, and waiting for the light to turn from red to green. It doesn’t get stuck, thanks to the non-stick
