Welcome to Betley Show 2018 – our 161st Show

We are really looking forward to this year’s show, with some excellent attractions in the main ring such as the fantastic Les Amis d'Onno withtheir Cossack Stunt Riding Show and the thrills and spills of the Inch Perfect Trials Motorbike Display Team!

Plus we have Howard Middleton from Great British Bake Off in the cookery demonstration area. I know that he's a very popular chef and he will be signing books too.

I do hope you find some interesting classes in this schedule and I look forward to seeing you on Show Day. It is always a good opportunity to catch up with old friends and sometimes make some new ones too!

Please note that all exhibitors in all sections must pay on the gate to enter the Show, unless 8 entries or more have been staged by 9.30 am Saturday morning. In the Floral Art Section 2 or more entries must be staged to get free entry to the Show. Entry fee will be refunded from the Secretary’s table.

Entries can be staged on Friday night at exhibitor's own risk, 6.00 pm until 8.30 pm or on Show morning before 9.30 am, when only the back of the marquee will be open and no cars will be allowed in the central area. You may park your car at the back of the marquee temporarily, while you unload in the morning and then collect your exhibits in the evening, however, in the interests of safety, during the day you must park in the public car park. Prize money may be collected at 4.00 pm if prize winners present their tear- off slip at the Secretary’s table.

No exhibit or prize card can be removed before the cup presentation in the Horticultural, Handicraft, Cookery and Art Section.

The Cup presentation will be at 5.00 pm. Hints for flower classes in the flower classes, flowers will be judged for colour, form, condition, freshness and presentation in the container. Pot plants must have been owned by the exhibitor for at least six months. The vase can be any shape or material, but take care that it is taller than it is wide. No points are awarded for the vase itself. No accessories will be allowed the only foliage should be growing on the stems. Packing material such as floral form or newspaper is allowed.

• Children’s craft items, pictures etc. all need their name, age and classwriting on the back or attaching in some way.

• Marquees open at 12.00 noon after judging and prizes are distributedfrom 4.00 pm at the Secretary’s table in the Horticulture Marquee. Donot remove the prize card, just take the tear off portion to collect yourprize.

• Trophies and Cups will be presented at 5.00 pm.

• If in doubt about anything, please talk to the Steward responsible for thesection you are interested in. They will be happy to have an informal chatand help.

12. An exhibitor feeling himself aggrieved by any decision or mistake orfrom any cause whatsoever, can give written notice to the Secretarybefore 4.00 pm on Show day, paying a fee of £5. This will be forfeitedto the Society’s fund, if the objection or protest is deemed frivolous bythe Committee.

13. The Committee will not be responsible for any loss or damage that mayhappen to any of the specimens on their way to and from or during theShow, but at the same time, the Committee will do all in their power toprotect such exhibits.

14. Prize money and cups not claimed at the appointed time and placemust be applied for by post to the Treasurer, within 7 days of the Show.

15. All exhibits not removed by 6.30 pm will become the property of theCommittee.

1. All entries in Local Classes are limited to exhibitors who cultivate theirown garden or land (total not to exceed 1 acre) in their spare time andare resident in Parishes whose boundaries come within a 5 mile radiusof Betley Church. An exhibitor showing for competition an articlewhich has not been grown in their own garden or land, will forfeitall prizes obtained and be disqualified from competing at any futureshow. Authorised members of the Society will have the power toinspect gardens of Exhibitors in the Local Section.

2. All entrance fees to be paid at the time of entry.3. Entries close on the Tuesday before the Show.4. All articles to be delivered to the marquee and staged before 9.30 am

on Show morning. Staging can also be undertaken on Friday night,between 6.00 pm and 8.30 pm.

5. No card, other that the Exhibitors Card provided by the Secretary andthe card denoting name and variety of exhibit may be placed on anypart of the exhibit.

6. No persons will be allowed in the marquee while judging in progressbetween 9.45 am and 12.00 noon.

7. No exhibits are to be removed from any marquee before 5.00 pm.8. Prize money will be paid out on the day of the Show from 4.00 pm, on

production of the coloured prize voucher which is issued in addition tothe Prize card, which must remain on display until 5.00 pm.

9. Cups will be presented in the Horticultural Marquee on Show day.These will be held until 1st June of the following year, when they mustbe returned to the Secretary for engraving.

10. Judges may award a first prize in each class and have the power torecommend extra prizes or withhold prizes in cases where there arenot sufficient entries or specimens are not of sufficient merit. Thedecision of the Judges shall be deemed final. The Show Committeereserves the right to refuse entries not up to Show standard. . You mayenter as many items in a class as you wish, however, you can only wintwo prizes per class.

11. Any competitor being disrespectful, or using improper or insultinglanguage to any Judges or Officers of the Society, may be disqualifiedand removed from the ground. The decision of the Committee is final.

Bottles Wines to be exhibited in a clear glass bottle of approximately 70cl capacity with rounded shoulders (eg. Sauterne type).

Corks Only flanged corks with white plastic tops.

Presentation Wine bottles should be so filled that when the cork is pushed right home, the air space in the bottle is between 0.5” and 1” depth.

Entries All exhibitor’s bottles to be placed on the stall by the exhibitor or representative by 9.45 am on the day of the show. (Any entries not complying with the rules will be eliminated).

Judging will be carried out by panel of judges appointed by the Organising Committee. The judge’s decision must be accepted as final.

Objections Any exhibitor wishing to raise any query must do so to the entries Secretary within one hour of the public opening of the show.

Melt together 4oz margarine, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of mixed fruit and a few glacé cherries.

Bring mixture to boil in a saucepan. Allow to cool. Add 2 cups of self raising flour and one beaten egg.

Fold together, put in a 1lb loaf tin and sprinkle the top with sugar. Bake for about 1½ hours at 160C
