In the pre-modern age, religion was pretty much a given. Although there were many different religions, and debates as to which one was most true, there was no question that Gd existed, and that it was proper to serve Him, Her, It, or Them in some way. With the modern era came a rise in importance of the scientific method, and a corresponding decrease in importance in everything that could not be proven by science, including religion. For this very important bulletin article, I thought I would share some excerpts from an email I recently received, and some excerpts from my reply. [Hello] Rabbi, Just by an accident in some random talk a few days ago I heard something like “the reason/source for a religious belief is emptiness in which anxiety dwells”. You know I’m always suspicious about this sort of coined formulas. Most of the time they fail to stand digging into. The formula that I quoted however looks to be true for many people. I like to think that in my [belief] there [is] no such reasoning, conscious or not. However when I think about many [religious people] that I know personally I can’t help thinking that is exactly their case. Then I think, OK [some religions do] indeed appear like balm, tranquilizers and anti- depressants to those anxiety issues, and those people in dismay very often find peace in [those religions]. But does Judaism? On the surface, no. In my history of getting into Judaism I never felt it was anything like Thai massage for a strained spirit, rather it was a set of tools and a very brief manual on how to make my own crutches to keep on walking. Dear [XXX], a very good question, and one that every religious person should confront. I would say that there are some religions that are more comforting than others.... But the important point is this: Religion does not exist to cover up negativity. Religion is a positive thing. Religion exists because people have always sensed there is more to existence than the physical. Religion is an attempt to make sense of our strong feeling that there is holiness, there is meaning, there is something more than material existence. Because our society is so materialistic, that which is not material becomes harder to grasp. Some who consider themselves rigorous intellectuals deny the existence of anything not provable, anything not material. Those people do feel an emptiness where meaning should be, and that causes them anxiety. If they can ignore the anxiety by focussing on theories, status, money, books, etc., they feel content, and superior to those who feel anxiety. But the anxiety is a message that you are missing something important. Judaism makes no promises about the afterlife. Judaism refuses to picture Gd as a person. Judaism has no good explanation for suffering. But Judaism says that meaning and holiness should fill our lives every day. Gd knows that we are not free from anxiety, but anxiety only serves to remind us that we must recommit to our attempt to connect to the Divine. For this very important bulletin article, I thought I would share some excerpts from an email I recently received, and some excerpts from my reply.[Hello] Rabbi,

Just by an accident in some random talk a few days ago I heard something like “the reason/source for a religious belief is emptiness in which anxiety dwells”.

Then I think, OK [some religions do] indeed appear like balm, tranquilizers and anti-depressants to those anxiety issues, and those people in dismay very often find peace in [those religions]. But does Judaism? On the surface, no. In my history of getting into Judaism I never felt it was anything like Thai massage for a strained spirit, rather it was a set of tools and a very brief manual on how to make my own crutches to keep on walking.

Dear [XXX],a very good question, and one that every religious person should confront. I would say that there are some religions that are more comforting than others....But the important point is this: Religion does not exist to cover up negativity. Religion is a positive thing. PARENTS AND CHILDREN

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are approaching. It has bothered me that Father’s Day is in the summer when the kids used to go to Jacobs Camp, but, I lived through it. It has always been important to me to bless the children on Shabbat. I often wish we could do that at Shabbat Services in the Synagogue. Children owe honor to parents, but parents should also honor their children. My fondest memories of my children will always mean more to me than any job or anything else. A couple of years ago, Ben said he wanted to consider attending the University of Alabama and wanted to visit. Only thing is, that the visit time he wanted corresponded to when LSU baseball had a weekend series at Alabama. We did very little review of the university, but we enjoyed the games. I have no idea of what I may have missed at the office, but I will always remember that weekend with him.

The President’s CornerWith Rachael, I remember going to the Baton Rouge General’s father-daughter dances. What great fun having my daughter as my dance partner. We both grew up together. The fact is on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day we celebrate parenting, but we are only parents because of our having children. They are our only gateway to immortality. So aren’t these days really about our kids? They are our gifts to us and humanity. As Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, says in his book, “It is Not as Tough as You Think”, parents should not just support their children financially, but also their spirit. As he says, the most effective way to teach spiritually is to be the role model. We show them how by the way we live. When we have that chance to enjoy and be proud on both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, let’s remember the joy and pleasure that we get from our children, and always bless them and honor them by being the best parents and role models we can.

Report from the Rabbinic Search CommitteeBy the time you read this, we hope that discussions will be concluded with one of two potential candidates for our Interim Rabbi. I want to thank the Board for being an active partner with the Search Committee. I want to thank each one of the members of the Search Committee for the countless hours of time they have put in,and the commitment they made to ensure that this process was performed with a sense of both seriousness and love for Beth Shalom and its future. Finally, I want to thank you the members of the congregation who took your time to attend teaching opportunities, small group meetings, and extended the hospitality to each of our candidates who visited us in Baton Rouge. I have very much appreciated your feedback. Also, my appreciation to our professional staff – Rabbi Gardner, Ellen Bush, and Cathy Melanson who took their time to meet individually with each of our visitors. So, where do we go from here? First, we can take a breath – but only for a moment. We have several tasks ahead of us: First of which, are transitional events for Rabbi Gardner and his family (as I write this, I hope he will have a happy announcement to make very soon); and for our incoming Rabbi who will be joining us in early July. During the summer, we will be called upon to help orient him to our minhoag, make him feel welcome, and begin a dialogue that will be both personal as well as congregational. These conversations will set the tone for the year he will be with us. It will help him create meaningful High Holy Day worship for us because he will begin to get to know us. Most importantly, it will help him facilitate our growth

as a congregational family. This is the basis of the clergy – congregational relationship, and I hope you can see, as I do, it needs to be a two way street. In August, the search committee will reconvene and prepare an application to the CCAR for a “settled” rabbi. By the time, we begin a second search in late October or early November, it is my hope that we will have created a written list of core values, a written statement of our mission as a congregation, and a written vision for the future of Beth Shalom. I know that the Board of Trustees is progressing with a new set of Bylaws that should be ready to present to the congregation for a vote at our Annual Congregational Meeting in January 2016.My favorite poem by Robert Frost concludes, “I shall be telling this with a sigh, Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” We have taken a road less traveled and I am convinced it will make a positive difference for the future of our congregation and our congregational family.

We want to thank Francine Fisher, Sharon Neff, and Annie Schwartz for their fabulous cooking for second night Seder. A special thanks also goes to everyone who helped prepare, serve, and clean-up. We are so glad that so many of you were able to attend. As you finish your Spring cleaning or start a Summer clear out, don’t forget to donate items to Here Today Gone Tomorrow (corner of Burbank and Blue Bonnet). Be sure to tell them you are donating on behalf of BSS (account number 699). If anyone has trouble delivering items, let us know and we will be happy to

assist. Please consider hosting an Oneg in the upcoming months. There are still numerous dates available. If you are interested contact Gail Sherman or email the office. Hope to see everyone soon and often.Sincerely, Diane

Klal Yisrael is an old Yiddush expression, used by the rabbis to describe the interconnection of all of the Jewish people. Have I told you lately how awesome our kids are? They’ve led Shabbat services, planted vegetables in the garden, cleaned up the book racks in the sanctuary, helped cook for the Seder, dusted the gift shop, and much more. This month they will be making cards for the sick, honoring their parents, and more. They are learning, through Mitzvot, to be a part of our congregation. How about our teachers? They have decorated wonderful, age-appropriate rooms to provide our children with a home of their own in our synagogue. The work hard every week to prepare lessons that will engage our children. Most of all, visiting the classrooms it is obvious that they truly love the kids and the kids love them. Our mazel-mavens help parents to include even the youngest babies. They are teaching are children what it means to be a part of a Jewish community. What about you, the congregation? You make this possible. We have a wonderful building that houses our classrooms and gives us access to a beautiful sanctuary and other spaces, thanks to the hard work of our board and staff. We have a brotherhood that invites us to plant the garden and may work with some of our kids

to rebuild the outdoor sanctuary, and a sisterhood that provides family friendly activities like the pajama concert. We have a rabbi who patiently answers any questions our kids throw at him; it’s amazing what kids will come up with in the middle of a game of Hebrew bingo. You wait patiently for our classes to end so yours can begin, showing our kids that education is not just for them. You come to services and events. You (we) are the Jewish community. We love and appreciate our congregation. With that in mind, as we approach the end of the year, I’ll ask for just a little bit more. Sunday, May 17 will be our last day of school. We will have a 10-Commandments Family Learning Day, open to the entire congregation, including a Brotherhood sponsored picnic. Watch for details and come support learn us. Come to confirmation and support our oldest kids as they affirm their dedication to Judaism. Welcome new and old families and encourage them to bring their children to religious school and Mazeltots. Help to build the school that is the Jewish Community, Klal Yisrael, of tomorrow.B’ShalomEllen Bush, Educational Director

Sisterhood News

Brotherhood NewsIt’s been a really busy beginning of the year! Not just for the Brotherhood but for the whole Community. The Hillel/SAMI Movie Night was a successful start. We have some exciting new ideas brewing in this arena but it is gonna take the participation of everyone in the congregation – more to come on that! The attendance and participation at the Corned Beef Sandwich sale and the Shalach Manot delivery was impressive.Of course, Pesach and the Second Night Seder were also impressive in every way.The key to the success all of this activity was community participation. But we have other challenges facing us, challenges that only a seriously engaged and thoughtful family can expect to meet head on and come through in one piece.Of course I am speaking about all of the other efforts being undertaken which are not so easy to agree on, such as the Mission/Vision Taskforce effort, the search for an interim Rabbi and

the revision of the Congregational By-laws. These all involve fundamentally held beliefs, understandings, preferences and emotional ties. But that is why it is worth taking on as a family! Some may choose to leave, others may choose to challenge and still others may choose to stand back and watch how it all turns out. There is no right or wrong in any of these choices, it is all part of being human. But I will say this. In my personal experience, the only thing that has been constant in my life has been change. When I was young I fought hard against change, but soon I realized that in most cases change is inevitable and the best thing to do is jump in and find out where it will take me. Where it took me was not always the place I wanted to be and in response I moved on to discover what other options were available. Other times I found that the change itself was far more beneficial than the alternatives I was so enamored of.In any case, the end result is that these days I tend to welcome change with a cautious eye. What I am most concerned with now

April was an adventurous month as we celebrated Passover and Rayner had its school wide Passover Seder on April 2nd. All who attended had a wonderful time. In April, we learned about Yom Ha’Atzmaut, dinosaurs, plants, ABCs and 123s, science activities, Jewish values and manners, colors and shapes, and Pesach. The themes were explored through song, stories, and art. We also received a visit from the Baton Rouge Police Mounted Police on April 30th, which our children thoroughly enjoyed. The month of May will be full of excitement for the Rayner Learning Center as well. We will gain knowledge of different aspects of Mother’s Day, marine life, ABCs and 123s, Jewish values and manners, colors and shapes, and a science activity. Students will also complete an End of the Year project. We will be celebrating Teacher’s Appreciation Week for our lovely teachers and staff throughout the week of May 11th. Our school wide picnic will be held on our playground on May 21st from 11:30AM-12:30PM. On Thursday, May 28th the Alfred G. Rayner Learning Center will host its “Moving On Ceremony” at 7:00 p.m. We ask that the families join us in making this a special and unforgettable event.Tot Shabbat is celebrated every Friday at Rayner and it is considered one of the biggest highlights of the week. The staff really enjoys seeing the relationship develop with the children and Rabbi Gardner. It’s truly beautiful to watch the children interact with Rabbi as they sing songs and listen to his stories about the Torah. It seems like the year has only just begun yet here we are just shy of the half-way mark. I have to thank for those members who stepped up and got some of our Programing done while I was in the hospital: and then recovering Karen Ceppos, Carin Carlson, Millie Fine, Ruth Katze”n & Marilyn Martell. From January to now they have held the following fantastic programs: A Fine Musical: A Program of Iano Duos and Voice”, “The Louise Newman Annual Heart Health Program – Every Step Counts No Run 5k”, and “A Natchez Pilgrimage”.The Baton Rouge Board attended the Tri-Region Conference in NOLA and Awarded Paula Samuels as our Chapter “Woman of the Year” for all the diligent work she has done ISS the Chapter Treasurer. Some of our upcoming plans are a Book Review of “Henna House:A Novel” by Nomi Eve facilitated by Paula Samuels, A Chapter Bat Mitzvah Tea and a Game Night. As event details are hammered out there will be more announcements and emails. Brotherhood Newsis not so much what the change will bring but rather whether the processes governing it are fair and focused on an equitable result. To that end I want to make one clear statement. Over the last year, for whatever reasons, I have been asked to sit on all of the leadership groups which are currently dealing with the aforementioned changes. As a result I have been closely involved with the processes which we use to govern Beth Shalom. I can assure you all that this was not something I actively pursued, but once asked I considered it an honor and a privilege to do so. I have made it a priority in all of this work to do everything in my ken to make sure that the processes designed to control the decisions that the leadership make are respectfully followed. And I am not alone in that. The bottom line is that I know that some feel that certain agendas held by perceived factions within the congregation have held sway over the proceedings for the last few months. I want to assure each of you that in my experience, nothing can be further from the truth. All of this work is being done with the greatest of concern for the good of the congregation within the purview of the responsibility and authority of the sitting leadership. Each and every opinion has been met with the utmost respect and consideration and weighed against the rules that we have all agreed to. I personally have not seen any indication of overbearing agendas resulting in biased decision making. In fact, the most difficult aspect throughout all of this process has been to successfully encourage the Congregation to provide a statistically significant amount of feedback from the congregants, especially with respect to the Mission/Vision effort. So, in conclusion, I must once again ask for each of you to get involved. Please don’t make choices that circumvent your involvement in the changes until you have a chance to evaluate them first hand. Let’s move forward like a family that loves and respects each other, even if we don’t always agree with each other.John Carlson

RegaRding Hospital Visits

Our Rabbi is eager to keep in touch with members of the congregation who are in the hospital or recuperating at home. As recent legislation prevents hospitals from circulating patient’s names, we rely on you to call the synagogue office and let us know when you, a family member or friend are in the hospital and would welcome a visit from Rabbi Gardner.

May He who blessed our ancestors grant all who are ill

a complete and speedy recovery.Joanne Kleiman
