The fl agship of our program is once again our special Shabbat Dinner & Guest Speaker Series. I hope that you will join us with your family to enjoy a Shabbat meal and hear from leading fi gures from the American and Israeli Jewish worlds. This Fall, we also inaugurate a new Yoetzet Halacha Program as a highlight of our Adult Education offering, complementing a full slate series of classes, guest speakers, and learning opportunities for children, teens, and adults.
I am grateful to Gloria & Harvey Kaylie for sponsoring the compilation and printing of our brochure, dedicating it in memory of Harvey’s mother, Tess Kaylie, z”l. There are many other dedication and sponsorship opportunities available, either in memory of, or in honor of a loved one. Please join us in our efforts to continue to improve Great Neck Synagogue as a dynamic center of Jewish life in our community.
With my best wishes for a Shana Tova, a healthy and joyous new year,

DR. IDDO NETANYAHU
Dr. Iddo Netanyahu is an Israeli physician, author and
playwright. He is the younger brother of Benjamin
Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister of Israel, and
Yonatan Netanyahu, who was killed leading the Operation
Entebbe hostage rescue mission in 1976 and was a highly-
decorated veteran.
Iddo was born in Jerusalem, and spent part of his
childhood in the United States. He left studies at
Cornell University in 1973 to fi ght for Israel in the Yom
Kippur War.
Netanyahu served in Sayeret Matkal, Israel’s Special
Forces unit, as did both his brothers. He has an MD from
Hebrew University of Jerusalem School of Medicine
and did post-doctoral training at Georgetown University
Hospital, Washington, D.C., and Mount Sinai Medical
Center, New York City. He works part time as a
radiologist at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, New
York, but spends most of the year in Israel.
His book “Yoni’s Last Battle: The Rescue at Entebbe,”
was published in Hebrew in 1991, and reissued in English
to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Entebbe
mission. The book is both an accurate, detailed account of
the raid and a personal tribute to a brother and a hero. The
fast-paced text offers numerous fl ashbacks of the three
brothers’ childhood and army service. Although some
details and identities remain classifi ed, the author was able
to interview most of the unit’s soldiers and others involved
in the raid.

DAVID HARRISExecutive Director, American Jewish Committee (AJC)
David Harris is one of the Jewish people’s leading
advocates and most eloquent spokesmen. The
Executive Director of AJC since 1990, he travels
the globe meeting with world leaders to advance the
well-being of Israel, combat anti-Semitism, monitor
the condition of Jewish communities, and promote
intergroup and interreligious understanding.
David was described by the Washington Post as “one of
the leading spokesmen” for the Soviet Jewry movement,
and was asked by the Jewish community to serve as
the national coordinator for the historic Freedom
Sunday for Soviet Jewry, the 1987 demonstration
in Washington that drew over 250,000 participants.
In this same vein, Mr. Harris also played a behind-
the-scenes role in the rescue of the Ethiopian Jewish
community in the early 1980s, before the historic
Operation Moses of 1984-85.
At AJC, David was a key fi gure in the successful
sixteen-year struggle to repeal the infamous “Zionism
is racism” resolution adopted by the UN General
Assembly in 1975, only the second time in UN history
a resolution was actually repealed. He spearheaded
AJC’s successful campaign to correct Israel’s anomalous
status at the UN, where it had been the only nation
ineligible to sit on the Security Council, and to
include it in one of the UN’s fi ve regional groups that
determine the all-important committee assignments.
Mr. Harris is a member of the Council on Foreign
Relations and the author of seven books – The Jewish
World, Entering a New Culture, and fi ve volumes of In
the Trenches – and co-author of an eighth, The Jokes
of Oppression. He has written hundreds of articles,
op-eds, letters, and reviews in leading newspapers and
magazines. Since 2001, he has had a regular spot on the
CBS Radio Network.

Classes Meet Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:30pm
PROGRAMThe Great Neck Synagogue Talmud Torah is a full Jewish after-school program dedicated to excellence in an engaging and respectful learning environment in which Jewish children can become proud, caring, responsible, and dedicated members of the Jewish people and American society. Our goal is to create lifelong learners who can identify with their heritage and for whom Judaism is a central part of their lives.
The Talmud Torah serves member families and students from fi rst through eighth grade. We offer a varied leveled curriculum focused on your child’s competencies delivered by experienced Jewish educators.
The program helps parents understand the important issues at each grade level and gives them an opportunity to study together with their children and participate in parent child services and Shabbatons. Issues covered include prayer, reading, Israel, Jewish life-cycle (including holidays), Jewish values and Torah study.
CURRICULUMThe GNS Talmud Torah program focuses on developing competencies in Hebrew reading, prayer, holidays, Torah understanding along with cultivating a love of Israel in a carefully structured and sequenced way. The classes are designed to provide a fi rm foundation for Jewish life. The most important goal is to impart love of learning Torah, reverence for God, appreciation of the land of Israel and enthusiasm for all aspects of Judaic studies.
