Our Best Practice Definition

procedures, research results) providing a remarkable
solution for a relevant problem or challenge in freight
transport.
Best practice includes an innovative and feasible approach
Best practice have positive effects on business and policy
targets
Best practice is transferable to other companies, initiatives or
contexts
BESTFACT cases will indicate outstanding solutions. Benchmarking
between cases is not within the BESTFACT scope.
A best practice for one actor might not qualify for others as best solution
but can serve as a good solution for a specific problem.

Best Practice Handbook 2: Urban Freight Cluster 1
Identified and synthesised challenges in urban freight:
• Small market share/high costs of clean technologies
• Slow diffusion of technical innovations
• Benefits are difficult to quantify
• Diesel fuel technology and infrastructure is dominating
• Technical difficulties in alternative fuelled vehicles
• Cooperation use of consolidation centres is difficult
• Lack of IT use for many small companies
• Lack of affordable logistics space within the urban area

Best Practice Handbook 2: Urban Freight Cluster 1
Case analysis and conclusions: Urban Consolidation Centres (UCC)
Three analysed types of UCC:
• Special project UCC
• UCCs on single sites with one landlord
• UCCs serving a town/city
Growing number of UCCs that demonstrate that they can operate on a
commercial basis without the need for subsidy. Overall commercial
viability and attracting goods volumes to the UCC are key indicators for
their success:
• Gnewt Cargo London
• Binnenstadservice
• Cityporto Padova
• Gothenburg city logistics initiative
• Copenhagen khb
