PROFESSIONALISM PAR EXCELLENCE: CONNECT TO CORPORATES (INTRAPRENEURSHIP)

Objectives of the Practice

The main objective is to establish systems approach to bridge the gaps in the technical,

business, leadership and people skills and impart diverse professional skills in the students.

The practice relies on building a holistic set of linkages to stakeholders by (i) creation of

courses recognized or accredited by globally renowned professional bodies (ii) identifying

and supporting New Age Courses led or certified by Industry (iii) association of legendary

professionals such as L. Subramaniam, Prahalad Kakker in the design of courses in tune with

emerging trends (iv) creating applied learning environment through industry and (v)

interaction with professionals by students.

The Context

The changed environment in Indian socioeconomic fabric in the post liberalisation and

privatisation era, the impact of digital technologies across a broad range of sectors and

demand for constant renewal of skills in the service led economy required a stronger nexus

between the university and the industry as well as professional bodies. A multi-pronged

systems approach is an undeniable necessity to address the diversities of disciplines, multi-

disciplinary orientation of applications and to achieve the necessary quality and excellence.

Another challenge was motivating a broad community of students, which was overcome by

bringing them in contact with best in the field. The challenge of identifying skill gaps is

addressed systematically through data from nationally and internationally known forums

like NASSCOM, CMIE, ASSOCHAM, LinkedIn Learning and others. Although challenging,

reputed industry leaders, professionals, Ed Tech companies, successful practitioners and

professional bodies had been convinced to lend support in skilling and course creation.

The Practice

In the context of Indian higher education, the Academic – Industry interface is a need well

recognised by the policy to effectively address the skill gaps, employability and relevance of

the application of knowledge gained through the higher education programmes. The

interaction with professional bodies too is of quintessential importance to set higher

standards and promoting excellence. These huge needs across multiple disciplines and

programmes cannot be achieved through one or two discrete initiatives but need a holistic

Page 3: Best Practices ANNEXURE I

and multi-pronged approach, which is the key feature of the best practice at JAIN deemed-to-

be University, “Professionalism Par Excellence: Connect to Corporates”

The practice involves that the curriculum designs across a broad spectrum of programmes in

the university are certified by reputed national / international professional bodies like

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Institute of Analytics, the Royal Economic

Society, Certified Management Accountants (USA) and a host of others as well as reputed

industry partners. These courses are either recognized or accredited by Global Professional

Bodies or integrated with Industry relevant curriculum or led by Globally recognized

legendary professionals. Over and above that student undergo compulsory value-added

courses to meet the Industry Demands. The Professional Bodies and industries provide

Professional Skill Development programs regularly to the faculty and the students. They also

offer research projects or internships or employment opportunities.

These initiatives cover the programs in the fields like management accounting, economics,

cost accounting, procurement and supply, analytics, securities and investment, branding,

leadership and management, hospitality, digital marketing, insurance, aviation management,

human resource management, additive manufacturing, advanced programming, computer

science and engineering, cyber security, forensic science, big data, machine learning, artificial

intelligence, electric mobility, innovation and entrepreneurship, food technology, design and

many others had been enhancing the relevance, quality and the industry preparedness of the

students, which are the key needs in the higher education.

“Industry in campus” set ups such as the applied learning centre/laboratories set up by

Toyota (for mechatronics) and that by Texas instruments for embedded systems, IoT, and

cellular communication technology; labs by Cisco, CompTIA, Oracle and Redhat in the field of

Information Sciences are another mode of industry interface. Seeking engagement of highly

accomplished and globally recognized legendary professionals in the field is another facet of

the strategy exemplified in the programmes relevant to Music and brand management.

The uniqueness of the approach is the holistic combination of skilling, bench marking and

curricular co-creative roles through this interface.

Evidence of Success

➢ Students have positively responded our programmes and courses which is exemplified by

62% growth in overall admissions in past five years and demand ratio going up from 4.87

to 10.08

➢ The second evidence of success is that a set of most coveted professional bodies have either

accredited the curriculum or granted exemptions to maximum number of papers or

Page 4: Best Practices ANNEXURE I

4 | P a g e Best Practice 1

facilitate membership. A detailed listing of programmes and these bodies is provided under

Notes (optional space).

➢ In the process of curriculum design and development, expertise is utilized from the

individual professional bodies / industries that provided inputs to align the curriculum to

Global Industry Standards and Emerging Trends, thus enhancing the competencies,

employability, intrapreneurship and entrepreneurial skills of our students. The interface

also helped the University to start programmes in emerging areas of creative arts and

design and allied health sciences.

➢ Institutionalisation of industry interface through Industry Advisory Board, which also

helped in having a MoU with ICT Academy A Govt Of Tamilnadu Undertaking to help our

students as well as faculty members to upskill in emerging trends in Sciences, Engineering

& Technology through top MNC’s and other Industries, who assisted in bringing industry

Labs to the campus.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required

With the new age programs, getting qualified faculty members has been a challenge, which was overcome by engaging with experts from industry. In order to fill the gap, industry professionals, experts and qualified facilitators were put into action to give students a better learning environment, experience and lay a strong foundation. We have overcome this challenge of sensitising students regarding right choices by providing information and counselling sessions to the parents and students taking support of industry experts, counsellors, qualified professionals, and alumni. The Teachers were made to undergo faculty development programs for enrichment and upskilling as certified tutors. Facilitation for the students to undergo the professional courses like CA, CS, and CFA in parallel, after class hours was done. Resource demands are mainly for industry professionals for industry-aligned curricula, which need necessary prior arrangements and flexibility in scheduling. Additional efforts for student continuity need closer progress feedback and mentoring.

In the context of increased globalisation and advances in the industrial and professional

practices, relevant curriculum design and evaluation recognized by Global Professional

Bodies for direct membership on completion of graduation or exemption for courses

prescribed for such membership can be a differentiator. The students get the benefit of

being a student member during their studies for industry insights in emerging trends,

networking with professionals, skill enhancement sessions, and employment opportunities.

The membership to these professional bodies is very rigid and is given only to those with

Page 5: Best Practices ANNEXURE I

5 | P a g e Best Practice 1

requisite skillsets and experience. The course recognition helps a student to have a better

profile and acceptance with the industry.

The industry-led, Industry-relevant or Industry-integrated programs give prospective

graduates an opportunity to gain skills and mastery in applied learning components of an

industrial or service sector. It also enhances the capability and potential for employment in

that sector as the first choice.

Prelude

Prior to becoming JAIN (Deemed- to- be- University), Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer College had

identified Industry Professionals and Practitioners to give the students an exposure in

emerging trends of Business or Technology, to enable them to face the challenges due to

change in Dynamics of Business Environment, as there were challenges for upgrading the

syllabus and curriculum development in state universities. The Academic Resource group

was created to enrich the curriculum, to bridge the gap between theory and practice and help

in giving value added programs for generating entrepreneurial opportunities and better

employment opportunities for students. On Attaining Deemed University Status, the

Department of Industry Interface and Placements was created in the University.

Figure 1: Emerging Skilling Trends

The Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization of the Indian Economy brought in new

concepts of learning and ocean of opportunities for the prospective students with the right

skillset knowledge and attitude. Conventional courses did not give an opportunity nor

flexibility in the curriculum design. As Deemed to be University we had the flexibility to

enrich and design the curriculum. Keeping the interest of the students in mind and careers

for them the courses had to be designed. To overcome these challenges, the department of

Industry Interface after thorough research, vigorous follow up with Industry, contacts with

L&D Heads, Conducting Various round tables with professional bodies and Industries,

contacting Institutions of National and International importance, the courses were designed

in emerging trends in Business and Technology. The Inputs to Identify the skill gaps were

taken from entities like LinkedIn Learning, NASSCOM, CMIE and others.

Ed Tech Companies, Reputed Industry Leaders, Professionals, Successful Practitioners and

professional Bodies were contacted for skilling partnership, course creation, content

development etc. Getting the correct Industry Partner with the same Vision, like-minded

attitude and hunger was a challenge.

We also created an INDUSTRY ADVISORY BOARD (IAB) pooling resources from Global

Professional Bodies, Industry Representatives and Successful Professionals.

JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) has committed itself for a holistic development of students.

The vision statement lays thrust on both employability and entrepreneurship skills. In order

to translate this into reality the curriculum design is certified by reputed national /

international organizations as well as reputed industry partners. These courses are either

integrated or recognized or accredited by Global Professional Bodies or Led by Industry or

Integrated with Industry relevant curriculum or led by Globally recognized legendary

professionals. Over and above that student undergoes compulsory value-added courses to

meet the Industry Demands. The Professional Bodies or through their partners, Industries

give regular, continuous Professional Development Skill based programs to the faculty and

the students. They also offer research projects or Internships or Employment Opportunities.

These programs are instrumental in enhancing the core, employability, Intrapreneurship and

Entrepreneurial skills of our students. In the process of curriculum design and development,

expertise is utilized from the individual professional bodies / industries that provide inputs

to align the curriculum to Global Industry Standards and Emerging Trends. The courses

offered through these accredited programs help the students to be prepared to the demand

of the industry and make them different from other students with the same qualification and

are accepted by the market/industry. The Industry Advisory Board (IAB) with their constant

inputs and industry interaction helped our university to start 2 departments in emerging

trends in the areas of CREATIVE ARTS AND DESIGN and ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES. The

advisory board also helped us in having a MoU with ICT ACADEMY A GOVT OF TAMILNADU

UNDERTAKING to help our students as well as faculty members to upskill in emerging trends

in Sciences, Engineering & Technology through top MNC’s and Industries. They also helped

us in bringing industry to campus and support of Labs.

At the end of the graduation the students not only qualify for the degree program but also

pursue the professional qualification for the non-exempted papers or qualify for direct

professional membership as the case may be. This also helps the student by enhancing their

professional profile.

The Industry Led, Industry Integrated or Industry Relevant & Programs given by

professionals, not only prepare the students with Industry readiness but also develop their

Knowledge, Skills and Attitude. Over and above, they undergo value added programs to keep

in line with the latest trends in the industry.
