There were so many original, unique and amazing costumes that it was hard to take it all in. The theme as you all are aware was “Find Your Treasure” and at Berkeley Vale Public School we are lucky to have so many teachers like Mrs Fuary who organised a week of library excitement. This excitement continues this week with the brilliant Michael Salmon (author and illustrator) visiting our school. Michael is the author/illustrator of titles such as Monsters and Other Creepy Things, The Down-under 12 Days of Christmas and Boho My Superdog. This will be a great opportunity for our students to hear his story, ask questions and even purchase his books. Many thanks to the parents who ensured that their children were dressed exceptionally and in full school uniform for our two days of school photos. As always these are taken by a private company who we believe do an exceptional job. The Year 6 photo that appears in the Year 6 graduation pack will be taken in Term 4, ready for the end of the year. All other photos at this stage are expected back at the end of this term. This week we are venturing into new territory with our Father’s Day activaties and celebration moving to the afternoon, from 2.30-4.00pm. We thank the many fathers, grandads and significant males for completing this survey and we look forward to its success. This is an opportunity for all significant males to come along, have a deluxe sausage sandwich with their child/ ren (gold coin donation for children), buy some raffle tickets and join in the fun games that we will have on offer. Sorry mum this is a dad’s event and we ask that you respect this as they do for our Mother’s Day activity. Next week we wish our Year 4 and 5 students the very best as they venture off on their major excursion. Both years are heading to an Outdoor Education camp where they will participate in a large variety of activities and have wonderful experiences with so many good memories. We look forward to the photos and stories that come from their few days away. Please remember that we ask that parents do not send students with mobile phones as there is not a need for them to call home or get messages from home. This is an opportunity for them to have fun, make friends and learn life skills. Please also remember that we have fantastic staff who are giving up their families for a few days to take care and ensure your child has the best experience. Narelle Armour - Principal K-2 ATHLETICS FUN DAY On Friday 10 August students in years K-2 took part in the Athletics Fun Day at Kurraba Oval. The day started with students competing in thrilling age races across 50 and 70 metres. There were lots of close finishes and even more big smiles! We then moved into group rotations where students took part in running events including egg and spoon races, sack races and relays. They then moved on to throwing activities such as bean bag shot put, javelin throw and target practice. The final rotation was jumping activities where students jumped over hurdles, through hoop challenges and over agility ladders. It was a great day, full of fun and sunshine and we were particularly impressed by the great sportsmanship demonstrated by the students. Thanks to our Year 6 leaders and House Captains who assisted on the day. PUBLIC SPEAKING Our Stage finalists did an amazing job at the local area finals at Brooke Ave PS on 16 August. Teachers and parents commented on their high quality content and delivery. I am also thrilled to announce that four students were successful in making it through to round 3, which will be held at Warnervale PS on the 23 September. We wish Tyler KA, Addison 3/4T, Lyla 3/4H and Aubin 5R the best of luck. Mrs Trasler GIRLS SOFTBALL The girls’ softball team consisting of: Sophie Burns, Renee Monteleone, Tayla Hawkins, Emily Cocking, Sophie Knott, Gemma Fletcher, Georgia Taylor, Kiara White-Kenah, Lily Carpenter, Vika Pakofe and Tarah Farrand were successful this year in reaching the 4 th round of the NSW PSSA Knockout competition. After winning their first game against Wyong Creek PS 8-3, at the end of Term 1, the girls committed to training regularly and showed a huge improvement, as they prepared for their next game. Mrs. Bath was extremely impressed with their growth in confidence, understanding of the game and batting and fielding skills. Unfortunately the team were defeated by Northlakes PS 16-11 in their next match and they are now out of the knockout competition. Thanks to the parents who

ABORIGINAL GARDEN On Tuesday 7 August, National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children’s day, staff and students gathered in the Cool Zone to celebrate. Representatives from Erina Heights Public School came to handover the GulangFest message stick, inviting staff and students to attend the 2018 GulangFest. It was also an opportunity to celebrate the incredible contribution of staff, students and a number of community members in the establishment of the Aboriginal Garden. This is a unique space at Berkeley Vale Public School full of native bush tucker foods where students can come together to learn, share and create. Bronwyn Chambers, Elder in Residence at the Wollotuka Institute provided the name for the garden in Darkinyung language ‘Nyinarayinggayi ganda ngura’ which translates to ‘Our Food Place’. Staff, students and visitors walked through the garden where Anthony Lesly, local Elder and Goomaroy man, performed a traditional smoking ceremony to pay respect to the land and sea.

BOOK WEEK INCURSION Tomorrow (Tuesday 28 August) is the last day to pay for the Book Week author visit. What a wonderful opportunity at a bargain price to see a very well known author, illustrator and cartoonist! Mr Salmon will have books available to buy on the day and he will sign these. Prices will range from $5 to $20 with many available at $10. If your child has misplaced their note, a handwritten permission note is fine. The cost is only $5.00. Have a great day and happy reading!

Mrs Fuary, Teacher-Librarian

BOOK WEEK PARADE Thank you to all the wonderful families who designed, made, or bought costumes for our Book Week Parade. Your children had so much fun on the day (and so did all the staff)! Thank you also to the staff for also dressing up in character and to Mrs Gray for organising music on the day. Book Week celebrates the importance of reading not just to school results but for your children’s enjoyment and success in life as adults.

LOST CLOTHING Has your child lost their jumper?

SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY Berkeley Vale Public School has reviewed our School Uniform Policy to include the recent changes presented by the Department of Education. The department supports the wearing of full school uniform which promotes a sense of belonging for students and creates a positive identity for the school community. School uniforms also contribute to the personal safety of students by allowing easier recognition of students inside the school and in the community (DoE School Uniform Policy, 2018).

Our policy continues to include the following information on representative clothing and mufti day expectations:

Representative Clothing Often when students represent the school at any level of sport or dance, there is the opportunity to purchase a piece of clothing to acknowledge this level of representation. This is usually in the form of a jacket /jumper. While schools should positively encourage the wearing of a school uniform, Principals can make exemptions for not wearing a uniform after discussion with parents & carers, and if considered justified by the principal. The Principal of Berkeley Vale Public School allows students to wear these jackets as part of their uniform each Friday. All other days of the week, it is expected that students will wear their full school uniform with pride.

Mufti Day The dress code for a mufti day is as follows. Students must wear covered shoes. No thongs, scuffs or

sandals. Students must wear their school broad, brimmed hat. Students must wear tops/ t-shirts that cover their shoulders

and midriff.

This policy has been reviewed in line with the Department of Education’s ‘School Uniform Policy’ and in line with the School Uniforms in NSW Government Schools Guidelines which were reviewed by the Department on 23 July 2018.

The Berkeley Vale Public School School Uniform Policy was approved by the P&C on Thursday 16 August 2018 and came into effect as of Friday 17 August 2018.

For further information regarding the policy, please see the Berkeley Vale Public School Website.

RUMBALARA: In week 3, Early Stage One travelled to Girrakool Picnic Area in Somersby for a senses bush picnic. We were greeted by staff from Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre and the students were immediately engaged, learning about the four things animals need; plants, air, water and shelter (PAWS). Students set out on a Bush Walk, identifying the PAWS in the environment and using their senses to guide them. We saw waterfalls and nests and felt the furry moss and the cool trunks of the grey gums. We put on our bionic bats ears and heard made and natural sounds and hunted for the natural treasures of the national park. Students were so excited to return to find that their soft toys had prepared a picnic for them, with all of their favourite food! We finished up with some nature art and games, drawing on the different textures of the trees and learning about animal crossings. It was a great day, and we even found a friend! Walter the wallaby would look great in royal blue and yellow don’t you think?

Over the last five weeks students from Years 2-6 have been participating in weekly ‘Getting Along’ lessons. Students have gained a strong understanding of the national definition of bullying in Australian schools as: ‘Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and

it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those

involved, including bystanders.

Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or

online, are not defined as bullying.’

Students have been using the following terms to understand different behaviours:

Most resources used to develop the lessons are from the following website:

Bullying. NO WAY!

https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/WhatIsBullying

This website also has many resources for parents to inform and support any

inappropriate behaviours at school.

Over the next three weeks students will engage in lessons focused on ‘Resilience- Bouncing Back’. Resources will be utilised from the ‘Kids Matter-

You Can Do It! Program’.

https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/early-childhood/programs/you-can-do-it-

program

Kindergarten and Year 1 students have been incorporating the ‘Zones of Self

Regulation’ program into their everyday lessons and playground interactions.

Students are learning the strategies needed to move from one zone into the next, and the importance of identifying what zone they (and others) are in.
