Dean’s Corner Greeting Berkeleyites, It is the time of year that the weather is getting cooler, midterm exams are underway, you may be getting fewer hours of sleep, and germs are everywhere so remembering to wash your hands constantly and get adequate sleep is important to prevent from getting sick in what is already a hectic time of year. Below are a few helpful tips/reminders regarding midterms: Use an organizer/planner/gcal etc. to map out all your major assignments and exams in one place. This is the first step in helping you to feel in control of your schedule—do not let your schedule control you.
You will probably have multiple mid-term exams scheduled for the same day. Unfortu-nately, with mid-terms this is an unavoidable situation so the best strategy is to plan ahead, do what you can to review, and get plenty of rest. Form a study group and make your own practice test.
Please keep in mind: It is not standard practice for the dean’s office to grant extensions for midterm exams because of multiple exams in the same day. If it is the case that a mid-term exam has been scheduled for a time that is different from your regularly scheduled class time and conflicts with another midterm exam during a scheduled class time your instructor will likely have an alternative time scheduled for the mid-term exam. Please consult your instructor directly to discuss the matter and deter-mine the alternatives available to you.
On exam day: do not go to exams on an empty stomach, eat well, but don’t overdo it with caffeine; get to the exam room early so you can get settled and collect your thoughts before the exam begins; read the exam directions (twice if necessary); an-swer the easiest questions first, mark any questions you skip so you remember to go back to complete them later. Focus on what you know, don’t doubt yourself, and an-swer every question (partial credit is often awarded).
Are you comfortable with the material being covered in class? If not, ask for help: Go to your professor’s office hours, TA’s office hours, or request a tutor if needed. Have you made an appointment with our Berkeley specific writing tutor for help at any stage of the writing process? Formed or joined a study group? Reached out to your faculty adviser, DUS, FroCo, or PL? If you are having specific challenges that you want to discuss, I am always happy to help.
Cheers to a great week! Dean Miller

NEW BERKELEY MATH AND SCIENCE TUTOR!
Splash at Yale runs two programs each semester for middle and high school students. Our Fall Splash program will be on Saturday, Novem-ber 11th. All of the classes are taught by Yale students and cover a range of topics from cooking to mathematics. Some of our previous classes include: The Geography of Happiness, The Lyrics of Bob Dylan, Love Po-etry, Epigenetics, and An Introduction to Skepticism.
Splash is a great opportunity for students who are looking to get in-volved with teaching or just want to share their passion for a particular topic. We welcome all teachers — regardless of prior experience — and we are happy to work with you throughout the teaching process, from brainstorming ideas to making a lesson plan. Teaching for Splash is a small time commitment but has a huge impact on our students! If you’re not interested in teaching, we would love to have you as a day-of volun-teer! (We have free food & swag!)
Teacher registration for Splash is open now until October 15th. Regis-tering a class is done through our website. Looking for some inspiration? Check out our last program’s catalogue! Have questions? Email us at [email protected].

Rebecca Soulen BK ’20 says:
Every Monday and Thursday I wake up at 6:55am and walk over to St. Paul and St. James Episcopal Church (right near Wooster Square). By the time I get over there, the basement's already hopping with activity. Sunrise Cafe runs out of the basement of the church and provides a free breakfast to anyone who needs a meal (7:30-9:30am, Monday-Friday). I help prepare and serve breakfast, chat and laugh with the other peo-ple, and snack a little myself before heading back to campus around 9:30am.
We always love, love, love to have more volunteers!! Come with me anytime, message me or email me if you want to walk over with me, otherwise I'll see you at Sunrise!
I promise it's a fun time!
Join her sometime, I definitely will! Thanks Rebecca!
