Bentonville, Arkansas

WELCOME TO BENTONVILLE

Located in scenic Northwest Arkansas, our city has become a prime destination for the entire business

world with a population of more than 44,000. We are proud of the fact that we are home to the world’s

largest retailer – Walmart! Now, more than 1,200 Walmart suppliers call Northwest Arkansas home.

Northwest Arkansas is one of the nation’s most dynamic economic regions, home to longtime industry

giants Walmart Stores, Tyson Foods and J.B. Hunt Transport Services. Now, with leisure and

entrepreneurial sectors taking flight, Northwest Arkansas is projected to have the nations third fastest-

growing economy through 2020, behind only behind Austin, Texas, and Raleigh, N.C.

With a critical business mass and world-class job talent, our region of more than a half a million people

continues to earn top marks for economic opportunity, affordability and growth. In 2016, Forbes ranked

Northwest Arkansas the third best medium-sized city in the nation for white collar job growth, while Fast

Company ranked the region at No. 2 in the nation for supporting minority owned businesses. At the

forefront of the acclaim, the cities of Bentonville and Bella Vista are attracting business and industry

thanks to quality of life, a growing leisure and tourism sector and an educated, ready workforce.

Bentonville’s school system has been widely recognized for excellence and has established itself as a

leader within the State of Arkansas. Recently, Bentonville High School was named by the Department of

Education as a “No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School.” This is one of the most coveted education

awards in the country.

Bentonville attractions

Bentonville boasts a park system consisting of more than

950 acres with 23 parks and more than 50 miles of trails. A

2.5 mile shared-use trail now connects recreational

enthusiasts to the 36 mile Northwest Arkansas Razorback

Regional Greenway, which links residents to many popular

destinations in five major cities. In 2015, the city opened the

doors to a 83,000 square foot Community Recreation

Center that provides a leisure and competitive pool, fitness

center, track, community rooms, multi-purpose athletic

fields, amphitheater and more.

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art opened on

November 11, 2011. World renowned architect, Moshe

Safdie, designed this spectacularly modern museum.

His creation uniquely integrates nature and art with

sublime architecture and conservation of the natural

environment. Crystal Bridges, with its 217,000 square

feet of galleries, meeting and classroom space, library,

sculpture garden and gathering place for up to 300

people, will be an esteemed landmark for decades to

come.

We are especially fond of our Downtown Square,

which is surrounded by locally-owned small

businesses and the newly restored Walmart Museum.

The Downtown Square plays host to the Bentonville

Farmer’s Market, First Fridays, Art Walk and many

other events held throughout the year; making it the

place for families, friends and visitors to gather. Adding

to the liveliness of the downtown area are several new

outdoor food venues, 21c Museum Hotel, Friday night

flicks, an ice-skating/splash park at Lawrence Plaza

and the summer concert series at Orchards Park. Best

of all, you can walk or ride your bike the short distance

from the Square to Crystal Bridges Museum of

American Art. The city’s Downtown Activity Center

offers bicycle rentals to all who would like to

experience riding along our trails and downtown area.

Benton County Arkansas

Demographics

Benton County has become a leading retail center for Northwest Arkansas as well as northeast

Oklahoma and southwest Missouri. The Bentonville Area Communities are business friendly and

supports strategic, planned economic growth. The unemployment rate for Benton County is 3.5 percent,

and many of its major employers include Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., county and city governments, school

districts, J.B. Hunt, Tyson Foods, retail stores and the healthcare industry.

Economic Profile

The economy of Northwest Arkansas remains strong for many reasons. The region is home to Walmart

Stores, Inc., J.B. Hunt, and several other major logistics and transportation companies, along with Tyson

Foods, the University of Arkansas and six major health centers. The key to the vibrancy of any economy

is job creation; create new jobs and population will follow. Today the region experiences a consistent

population growth.

According to the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, Benton County is the collecting pool for

a three-state labor shed. Each day, workers from northeast Oklahoma, southeast Kansas, southwest

Missouri and surrounding counties in Arkansas commute to Benton County for employment. As our

region grows with the hard infrastructure of highways, streets, commercial and retail centers it is also

growing the soft infrastructure of the arts, entertainment, museums, recreation facilities and sports.

Northwest Arkansas also offers a respite for retirees who move here for the low property taxes and the

scenic splendor of abundant lakes, golf courses and easy lifestyle in Bella Vista and along the shores of

Beaver Lake. All in all, Northwest Arkansas is a diverse, economically sound, safe and affordable Mecca.

The region experienced stratospheric population growth and new job creation from the late 1990s

through 2006 with monthly population increases of 1,250 people per month and an annualized new job

production of 560 per month.

Housing

Housing in Northwest Arkansas is both abundant and affordable. In fact, the median cost of a three-

bedroom home is $42,000 lower than the national average. As a result, newcomers often find themselves

stepping up a level or two in the housing department. From historic and traditional neighborhoods to

brand-new communities, from moderately priced to luxurious, odds are you’ll find the home you want for

less. In the past decade alone, over 21,000 building permits produced nearly $1.9 billion in residential

construction.

Northwest Arkansas

Northwest Arkansas growth over the past several years can be attributed to expansions at the

University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and at the region’s largest companies. Bentonville-based Walmart

remains at the top of the Fortune 500 list, and Springdale-based Tyson Foods is investing in new

downtown offices that's expected to spur downtown growth in Springdale. Meanwhile, Lowell-based

J.B. Hunt Transport Services is putting the finishing touches on a new office tower where hundreds of

new employees will work.

Additionally, the region’s Walmart supplier community has continued to expand for two decades. There

were about 450 Walmart supplier offices in the region in 2000; there are now more than 1,600

suppliers, including several offices with more than 100 employees.

City governments and school districts have certainly played an important role in the continuing growth

with their investments in better roads, water quality protection, new schools, emergency services and

parks.

That’s been combined with the good work and investments of regional partners such as the Beaver

Water District, the Benton-Washington Regional Public Water Authority, the Northwest Arkansas

Conservation Authority, the Walton Family Foundation and the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning

Commission. They all helped make the population growth possible by providing services needed by

new residents and the amenities wanted by those who are moving to the region.

There’s no indication that the population growth will slow anytime soon, either. The regional planning

commission estimates the four-county Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers Metropolitan Statistical Area will

by near 800,000 residents by 2040. It’s near 525,000 residents today.
