INTRODUCTION For most of you, a cup of tea is a simple beverage to get you started with the day or act as a mild stimulant to keep you going at a task. But did you know sipping certain types of tea have significant health benefits such as immune enhancement, weight loss, detoxification, calming and soothing properties? Yes, it can be as simple as brewing a cup and sipping it for health, BUT we are not talking about the regular tea leaves that are available out there. The tea leaves of interest here are herbal teas. These are exotic leaves – which are a collection of premium tea leaves sourced from the best quality supplies with 100% natural and organic ingredients in a single product.

WHAT ARE HERBAL TEAS?

Herbal teas are different from the regular tea leaves because they are not produced from white, black, green and oolong teas. They are made from dried parts of a herb – stem, root, seeds, leaves, bark, buds, and flowers, which have special therapeutic effect on your body upon consumption. As a matter of fact, herbal teas are often called ''herbal infusion'' or ''herbal

tisane''. Herbal teas are either a mix of many plant (herb) parts or a derivative from a single herb or any non-tea plant. They impart a typical aroma and flavour to the cup of tea depending on the type of ingredients used in the herbal blend. Unlike the other types of tea, herbal tea has no caffeine and they taste great. Drinking herbal tea is a good way to heal yourself naturally. They are simple, cost-effective and have been used for centuries as a way to boost people’s quality of life.

strength unavailing, wealth useless, and eloquence powerless.” —Herophilus c. 300BC

HISTORY OF HERBAL TEA

It has been established that herbal tea has been in existence for 5000 years. Tea was considered a superior beverage by the Egyptians and Babylonians so it was offered to the Gods and Emperors. Legend has it that the discovery of tea is accidental; while preparing a pot of boiling water, leaves from a nearby tree fell into the pot of water which was to be served to a Chinese Emperor. The Emperor, said to have belonged to the “Shen Nung” era, developed a liking for the aroma and concoction and that is how the aspect of tea is said to have come. From then on it was adopted as a remedy and a status symbol for the Chinese society and served as a beverage. No one has validated this tale; irrespective of whether or not the incident occurred tea is now a highly revered beverage and the most consumed around the world. It is now evident that tea is popular for its association with various health benefits and its superb taste. According to a famous Zen priest tea is one of the ultimate mental and medical remedies that has the ability to make the life of an individual full and complete. Among the Japanese, drinking tea became one of the most celebrated events as a culture and as an integral part of the feudal negotiations.

The Romans later adopted the use of herbal spices and tea by writing books on herbal uses and preparations. The Romans were popular because they were responsible for the spreading the use of the herbal tea across the Indian Ocean to the Asians. When the Roman Empire fell the Arab merchants took over the business and monopolised the trade of selling the herbal products including other spices in the industry.

By 11th century, Europeans discovered the potential of herbs and spice trades and took control of these trading routes. By 17th Century, tea was the key among the wealthy Dutch and most of the upper class people. It’s here that milk was first added to tea. It is now evident that the history of tea continues to be made every day. The modern tea is now a global product with new varieties being discovered every day. The different flavours are also being tasted every day and health benefits are continuously being uncovered with the advancement of science and technology.

It is now clear that tea has its own established medical history and hence different ingredients can be blended to achieve perfect varieties that help boost the body’s health needs. The most common spices that have been added and used in tea includes: Cinnamon, turmeric, and garlic. In chapter 2 of this book you will read why you should make herbal teas as part of your life. But before this you need to understand the current health challenges which emphasise the need for natural remedies to nurture and heal you. If you wish to skip chapter 1 which talks about our current health challenges you can do so. Chapter 2 will brief you on the benefits of herbal teas, and the effects of specific ingredients on your body. You will also read about three types of herbal teas and our other natural products that help you address present day health issues and challenges.

CHAPTER 1–OUR CURRENT HEALTH CHALLENGES We are sure most of you agree with the fact that the present world is fast-paced, sometimes chaotic, and very stressful. Obviously, all these things and a host of other factors do have their own way of impacting our health – physical state and mental well-being. Let's look at the present day challenges to your health and briefly look into their implications.

Research clearly indicates that three major factors significantly influence human health: 1) Lack of physical activity 2) Unhealthy / unnatural food and toxins, and 3) Stress

HEALTH CHALLENGE #1: LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY/EXERCISE

The first visible sign of lack of exercise or physical activity is a gain in body weight. Typically after the age of 35 your body's metabolic rate (or the speed at which your body burns fat) slows down. When this happens, you naturally tend to add on some kilos even if you eat less than you use to. Unwanted gain in body weight starts to occur gradually. It starts out as being slightly overweight which may quickly progress to a much more severe condition called obesity. Obesity is a condition where a person's body weight is 20% or more than his normal body weight. Today's lifestyle has replaced healthy living habits like walking and cycling, as people prefer to use cars than to walk or bicycle; use elevators instead of taking the stairs etc. A major portion of most of the workplace time is spent inside an office building leaving less chance for people to incorporate physical activity into their daily routine. This again adds to health problems like being overweight and obese. Health implications of being overweight:

• High blood pressure • High risk for heart disease • Risk of Type 2 diabetes • High risk for stroke • Sleep apnoea • Osteoarthritis • Other conditions like fatty liver disease and kidney disease, to name a few.

HEALTH CHALLENGE #2: UNHEALTHY PROCESSED FOOD AND TOXINS

Today's fast food culture and the fact that an increasing number of people go after convenience foods has spun a huge market for processed foods in recent years. In the majority of cases these processed foods are unhealthy and contain added sugar, fat and salt. This leads to a condition called ''system overload'' where your body is constantly exposed to loads of sugar, fat and salt.

Over a period of time your body gets to a point where it cannot handle this assault, which inevitably leads to the failure of basic body functions. Furthermore, most of these refined foods are low in nutrition, which also leads to a state called ''over-fed yet malnourished''. This condition leads to a wide range of health problems including obesity, high BP, depression, heart diseases, diabetes, certain types of cancer and poor immune health.

TOXINS (FROM POLLUTED ENVIRONMENT)

Pollutants such as sulphur oxides, lead, hydrocarbons etc; other pollutants in water and food; acquired habits such as smoking, alcoholism and drugs are added stress factors to your body. To make things worse, pesticides and herbicides used in our crops also add on to this burden.

These pollutants gain entry into your body via breathing, drinking and eating. When the levels of these pollutants are low, your body can efficiently handle them to detoxify. However when the influx of these pollutants surpass the capacity of your body to handle them the problems begin. Toxins start accumulating in cells which over time result in fatigue, aches and pains and other health conditions. Health implications of processed foods & toxins:

• Unhealthy body weight • Accumulation of toxins in cells • Food allergy triggers • Increased inflammation • Chronic fatigue • Body pain and aches • Disorders & diseases

HEALTH CHALLENGE #3: STRESS

In today's world, stress is an inevitable part of your life. The accelerating pace and the constant change both cause high levels of stress at the work place and in your personal life. Irrespective of the type of occupation, nearly most of us are stressed one way or the other since multi-tasking has become the norm of our lives. Modern tools like Internet, cell phone and the ability to communicate from literally anywhere adds to the stress quotient. According to a report from the Journal of the American Medical Association, workplace stress is as bad for your heart as smoking and high cholesterol. One other report from a medical journal, the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, states that people with high stress levels have 46% higher health-care costs than those with low stress levels. Health implications of stress on your body:

• Affects overall health • Increases blood pressure • Increases blood cholesterol • Loss of sleep • Leads to anxiety and depression • Causes hormone imbalances • Migraine triggers • Lack of motivation • Gain in body weight due to overeating • Loss of body weight in some cases • Chronic fatigue

The foundation of success in life is good health: that is the sub-

stratum fortune; it is also the basis of happiness. A person cannot

accumulate a fortune very well when he is sick. —P. T. Barnum

Overview of lifestyle changes in the last 100 years:

CATEGORY THEN... NOW...

Lifestyle

Active, with plenty of physical activity like walking, carrying loads, working in farms or outdoors

Sedentary, with fewer opportunities to walk or move

Transport Walking and bicycling Cars, motorbikes and public transport

Environment Lesser use of pesticides Clean air and water, less pollution

CHAPTER 2 - WHY HERBAL TEAS SHOULD

BE A PART OF YOUR ROUTINE

Herbal teas are a combination of herbs and their parts like seeds, roots, or stem that can have significant health benefits to your body. They work individually or as a combination of ingredients to exert the beneficial effects. Herbal teas contain a combination that helps to regulate your body's metabolism and helps the body to perform at its optimum level. Using herbal tea is a painless, strain-less option and convenient mechanism for losing weight, detoxing and de-stressing your body.

Every ingredient in the herbal tea has a special function that targets certain areas of the body. The combination of ingredients in herbal tea work in a synergistic fashion to help the body to detox, lose the extra weight and relax. For instance, the combination of ingredients in Help Me Lose Weight herbal tea helps in the process of promoting better weight management without the need to engage in strenuous exercises. But do remember that with mild to moderate physical activity the results are quicker, amazingly effective and very good for your general health. The active ingredients contained in Help Me Lose Weight herbal tea have been specially designed to promote a balanced distribution and metabolism of fats in the body. It prevents weight gain and promotes weight loss. The active ingredients in our herbal tea formulations help many biological functions. These natural compounds include essential vitamins, alkaloids, polyphenols, aldehydes, glycosides, essential lipids and many other beneficial components present in the tea plants.

HOW TO DETOX, LOSE WEIGHT AND RELAX

Believe it or not, the process of getting rid of toxins, losing weight and relaxing (de-stressing) are all dependent on each other. This means one influences the other and if the balance is upset, it kicks off a chain of events that is not easy to break. To explain better, let's look at Lisa's story. Lisa has a high paying job, which demands frequent travel. She is constantly stressed and often eats what she finds on the go (unhealthy eating pattern). She also struggles with issues of being overweight, and although she finds time to exercise, the excess kilos just refuse to leave her. She is frustrated with her exercise and emotionally disturbed because of her weight. She also suffers from high blood pressure and is under medication.

This sort of scenario automatically presents the body with two things—excess calories and inability to get rid of toxins. These two factors lead to fat cell accumulation resulting in unwanted weight gain. Furthermore, the toxins in her system are less efficiently processed and as a result they float around in the blood,

where it finds the fat cells and encloses itself in it. This makes the fat cell more stubborn and hard to metabolise which increases the risk of gain in body weight. Needless to say, an increase in unwanted body weight is always associated with medical conditions like high blood pressure and mental issues like low-self esteem and stress. Stress becomes yet another trigger factor for your body to store more fat cells, which increases the problem of obesity. This is how a typical chain of events looks, which becomes hard to break. Our body operates with the help of an in-built detoxification mechanism, which influences body weight. It just makes more sense to maintain this delicate balance that is inherent to your body. Sabotaging this natural balance with habits like unhealthy eating, not exercising enough and living under stress can augment the damage multiple times. While it may seem practically impossible to eat right all the time and live a stress-free living, there are some simple ways you can start off with such healthy habits.

WHAT IS DETOXIFICATION?

Detoxification is a natural biological process that constantly takes place in your body. This means your body is always undergoing a detoxing process – good examples are sweat and urine. With a healthy and cleansing lifestyle, your body would generally be able to naturally detoxify itself each day.

However, since most of us lead a very toxic lifestyle, this process can’t keep up without having to periodically help your body and its organs to detox. Typically your body converts toxins that enter the system into less harmful substances and eliminates it via the excretory system. Our body's detoxification capability is primarily dependent on three organs - the liver, the colon and the kidneys. In order for your body to get rid of the harmful toxins in an effective manner it is crucial that these organs function well.

ORGANS FUNCTION

Liver First line of Defence

Acts like a filter Prevents the entry of toxins into blood stream

Colon

Flushes out toxins from the body Contains healthy bacteria that also helps in healthy

bowel movements

Kidneys Work Continuously

Filters your blood and gets rid of toxins as urine

WHEN DOES YOUR BODY NEED SUPPORT FOR DETOXIFICATION?

Unhealthy food choices, exposure to pollutants, harmful habits like smoking, excess alcohol intake and others play havoc to the integrity of your body's inherent detoxifying mechanisms. This happens when the amount of toxin exposure to your body exceeds the normal threshold of what your body's normal detox mechanism can tolerate. The result - your body may get overloaded with toxins, which then affects all of your organs – right from your head to toe.
