Principal’s Message Week 3 Term 4
Congratulations to Lana Howlett who was acknowledged for her
outstanding leadership skills at the recent Australian Council for
Educational Leaders awards dinner. Lana was nominated for and
was a most worthy recipient of the Sr Cath Duxbury award for an
outstanding emerging leader. This is a great honour and one that
is incredibly well deserved.
Year 6 Performance
Last week the Year 6 students and their teachers presented ‘Robin and The Sherwood Hoodies’
to our school community. It was spectacular! The many hours students spent rehearsing was
realised in a very polished, professional performance. I would like to especially thank Karen
Watson, Rebecca O’Hara, Lyn Burgess and Rebecca Hunt for providing this wonderful
experience for our students and for the many hours of their own time that went into creating
props, backdrops, costumes and organising music and sound effects.
BVPS Cricket
Thank you to Richard Cotter who once again coached and organised the Ben Venue Cricket
Team this year. Last Friday the team travelled to Maclean to play against Kingscliff Public School
in a game that had previously been cancelled due to local bushfires. Unfortunately, Ben Venue
went down to a very strong Kingscliff team, who will now play in the State Quarter Finals. Well
done to the team on a great season and congratulations also on their sense of fair play and
commitment.
Year 4 Excursion to Dubbo
Thank you to Nicole Frost, Amanda Swain, Jeanenne Gale and Taylor Shing-Kelly for taking our
students away on a most exciting excursion to Dubbo. Students visited the Old Dubbo Gaol,
Dundullimal Homestead and Taronga Western Plains Zoo as part of their two-night excursion.
Our students received many compliments on their behaviour whilst visiting these tourist
attractions and all teachers commented on what a wonderful group they
were to take away.
Congratulations
I would like to congratulate Binudi Vithana who recently received a High
Distinction in the Year 5 division of the Newcastle Permanent Mathematics
Competition. Consequently Binudi has been invited to attend a Mathematics
camp in Newcastle early next year.

Mobile Device Policy
Please remind your students about our school policy on mobile devices. Attached is a copy for
your reference.
Selective Class 2021
Selective high schools cater for academically high potential and gifted students who may
otherwise be without sufficient classmates of their own academic standard. Selective schools help
these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised
teaching methods and materials.
Selective high schools are unzoned so parents can apply regardless of where they live.
Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the
Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High
School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 12 March 2020.
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2021, you
need to apply at https:// education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-
opportunity-classes/year-7.
The application website opens via the above link on 8 October 2019 and closes at 10pm on 11
November 2019. You must apply before the closing date.
2020 Planning
Planning for 2020 classes has begun. If you intend on leaving Ben Venue at the end of the year,
please notify me in writing ASAP. I have had a significant number of requests for enrolment next
year and it helps knowing in advance if I have places available. When planning classes for 2020
many factors are considered. Whilst I will consider parent requests these cannot always be
accommodated. If you have a specific request please submit in writing by November 26 (requests
after this time will not be considered). Please be aware that not all teachers remain on the same
grade. There will be some staff movement next year. Students will not be asked to nominate other
students they would like to be in a class with. Teachers are best placed to make decisions
regarding the learning of students and will consider many factors when organising classes. I have
full confidence that teachers place student learning and student wellbeing at the forefront of their
decision making.

Mobile Devices Policy - updated 2019
A mobile device refers to any device capable of communication or gaming. Some examples include but are not limited to tablets, smartphones, mobile phones and smart watches.
Rationale: We understand that many parents/carers support and encourage their children to carry a mobile device. Mobile devices may be of some use as a protection from danger on the way to and from school or when normal travel arrangements break down. They may also be useful when after school activities are cancelled or changed. Mobile devices, however, can easily be improperly used, lost or damaged and therefore guidelines for their use in schools must be clear.
Aim: To establish clear guidelines for student owned mobile devices at Ben Venue Public School that acknowledge the benefits of student owned mobile devices whilst minimising the potential problems they can cause.
Implementation: • Students are able to bring personal mobile devices to school for health, safety or personal
reasons that justify students being in possession of a mobile device. • In the instance of a student requiring a mobile device for personal health reasons the use of the
mobile device must be included in the student’s individual health care and management plan. • The school does not accept responsibility for lost or damaged student mobile devices. • It is a parents/carers choice to send a student to school with a mobile device therefore they take
responsibility for loss or damage to the device. • Students must sign in their mobile device at the office each morning and sign it out at the end of
each day. Students are not permitted to use their device (this includes, SMS, recording audio, photographs, music and games) during the course of the school day. This includes recess and lunch breaks.
• At the end of the day, after the device has been collected from the school office students are able to check their messages or contact parents whilst on school grounds. They are not able to use their device for videos, photographs, recording, music and games.
• If a student uses a mobile device contrary to this policy the device will be confiscated and held at the school until a parent/ carer is able to collect the device.
• No mobile devices are to be taken on school camps/excursions. If a student wishes to use a mobile device as a camera the SIM card must be removed.
Evaluation: The policy will be reviewed as required.

Public School
Students in KB have quickly settled back into their classroom routines after the holidays. We
are looking forward to enjoying many different learning experiences during our final term in
Kindergarten.
Last week, Kindergarten students attended their first excursion to the Thalgarrah Environmental
Education Centre where they enjoyed learning about the needs of living things. This excursion
was a great stimulus for our Science Unit this term. Students explored the bush setting using
their senses as well as going on a Teddy Hunt by following paw prints through the bush and
answering clues to find the Teddy Bears Picnic.
This term, we will also be attending three sessions at the Armidale Gymnastics Centre as part
of our Physical Education program. Students are looking forward to attending their first session
this Thursday.
Thank you to our parents/carers for your ongoing support by ensuring that your child is
organised with home readers and news items each week.

3E Last term we enjoyed our excursion to Thalgarrah. For some students it was the first time they had been away from home overnight. I was really impressed with 3E student's organisation of their belongings and their resilience with being away from home. Students were very excited to play Tribes and Territories and to have a moonlit walk in the forest. Most students loved the food supplied. I hope it was a valuable and confidence building experience for all.
Some quotes from 3E about the excursion:
Jasmine I felt brave, tired, proud and glad at Thalgarrah. The food was the best of all. Jacob Farrell I felt happy and grown up. I loved the bush walk in the forest and the food and drink. Evie I'm happy that I went because I had a great time and it was an amazing experience. Cooper I felt proud and thankful. It was a bit scary on the night walk when we had to turn our torches off because I heard a sound! Indiana I had the best time! Jacob Finlay I was happy and calm.
We are looking forward to our National Parks excursion this term on Friday 15 November where we will be met by Thalgarrah staff to lead us in many activities and adventures in the National Park. This excursion is part of our Geography unit.
Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who replenish personal equipment throughout the year, it really supports your child's learning.

25 October 2019 Year 6 c/o Ben Venue PS Erskine St Armidale NSW 2350 Dear Students of Year 6, I was fortunate enough to see your grand play ‘Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies’ and have come to the conclusion that I must be congratulate you on this show stopping performance. This, extremely well-crafted piece of art ‘Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies’ was amazing and I loved all the painted scenery, costumes and songs. But the thing that astounded me the most was the effort of both the performers and teachers alike. It must have taken you hours to perfect it, but the finished product was OUTSTANDING! Regards, Matty Andrews 5/6R

25 October 2019 Year 6 c/o Ben Venue PS Erskine St Armidale NSW 2350 Dear Year 6 2019, I am writing a letter to you about your Play, ‘Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies’, that you did this year and why it was so spectacular. Your play was fantastic, all the make-up , costumes and the effort that everyone took part in, and I mean absolutely EVERYONE did an amazing job. You guys and girls put in a show-stopping performance. I wish there was more! All of you had a lot of guts to stand, speak and sing in front of everyone. I can’t wait until we, Year 5, get to do the play next year. You are awesome role models. Lastly, I think you should say another BIG thank you to the marvellous Year 6 teachers, Miss O’Hara, Mrs Watson, Mrs Hunt and Ms Burgess. Sincerely, Emily Gray 5/6R
