U11s head to Launceston

The Under 11 Belwest Girls have done a great job in 2012. For most of the team this is their second season playing together and their game has improved significantly. The girls have a great team dynamic and are all now adept at playing all over the field and have played consistently well in each round of the season. We have learnt a lot and hope to continue to improve when playing in the Under 12 competition next year.

A highlight for the girls was participating in the Kanga Cup in July. Despite the miserable weather the girls played exceptionally well and played some great games against interstate and international teams.

After an excellent season the girls are now heading South to represent Belwest in the 2012 Launceston Mitsubishi Tournament in Launceston, Tasmania from 21st to 23rd September 2012. We have been training (and fundraising) hard to get there and will do our best to do ourselves, our supporters and sponsors and of course our club Belwest proud! Thank you to everyone that has supported our fundraising efforts to help us get there.

We would like to pass on a special thanks to our parents, grandparents and siblings for their tireless assistance and support throughout the season - we couldn’t have done it without you. Last, and by no means least, thank you to our wonderful coaches and managers for helping make 2012 the best season yet... we will see you in 2013!!

U9s Frogs

2012 saw another incarnation of the Belwest Frogs - U9s bringing about Version 5.0 what with the team starting off in Pee-Wees in 2008 and adding to it's ranks the past five seasons - whilst other Belwest teams graduating from Pee-Wees in 2010 took on names like panthers, dragons, scorpions and the like, we retained our link to our Pee-Wee Freddo Frog heritage and in doing so strive to be about effort, participation and sportsmanship.

A great season

A great season all round, taking on three new players in Rhys Morgan, Charlie Pullen and Oliver Finnigan who settled in quickly alongside stalwarts Luke McPherson (2008), Josh McWilliam (2009), Owen Davies, Cody Doyle and Damien McKellar (2010) and Logan Mott (2011) comprising a team who on it's day could put together some remarkable defending and attacking football whilst destroying the inventories of every away canteen encountered post match.

Coach to step down?

By season’s end the boys started to appreciate positional play, passing and moving into space and challenging everything to force the opposition into errors - their progression from start to finish of season was notable to all as was a growing understanding of defending however it is now time for a more rounded and experienced football coach to take these boys skills further in 2013. U9s Frogs report (cont)

Whilst a notable performance was regularly seen in the carnage about the food-stalls, this achievement was well surpassed by the loudest, most boisterous and enthusiastic parent cheer-group ever encountered in Frogs history.

Supporters: Warm and welcoming

Whilst the volume and effervescence may have rattled some of the more conservative folks found at a particular private learning institution, by far the norm was the friendly and collegiate outlook by this season's parental group repeatedly bringing about warm and welcoming exchanges between clubs visiting us at Latham or hosting us elsewhere - role modelling at its finest.

Thanks to Rowena Davies

It is with sadness that 2012 brings about the end of managerial duties by Rowena Davies, having admirably fulfilled the role since 2010 - on behalf of the team and the club - thank you Rowena.

Frogs silenced in 2013?

It is also disappointing the Frogs are likely to be broken up in season 2013 arising from other clubs’ insistence on grading players from U10s - a trait I am sure many at Belwest question the necessity for, but alas, respond in kind 'we' (the club) must. (cont - don’t miss)

With this outcome in mind, at season’s end we staged a parents -v- boys game, and whilst it left the boys extremely flat for the last intra-club game of the year, nevertheless the parents -v- boys game was outstanding; played to a high standard, on a beautiful afternoon and contested in a friendly but competitive spirit, which left us all wondering;

a) why we’d never attempted this beforehand, andb) how the heck we (the parents) would be able to get out of bed the following day - soreness abounded.

Dodgy Ref?

The outcome? Boys winning 5-2 supposedly a result of some dodgy refereeing by the coach but the reality being, the parents had nothing in the tank for the final stretch, and what with promises of a home-baked afternoon tea following, the boys would not relent leaving a couple of 'sporting concessions' made somewhat redundant after a couple of genuine finalisers being slotted away.

In closing, on behalf of the team, a very big thank you to our parents for their support and good humour, to the club and committee members for your efforts this and the past few years, and to the officials - especially those referee's whom showed the interest and took the effort to lead, mentor and help the boys in the games.

U12 DIV 2 BOYSThe team started off the season very eager, with 5 new players joining the team. The rest of the team was made up of loyal followers, to continue to learn the art of Football by their leader Ryan. They commenced full of steam and won the first game 4 nil followed by the next week of 5-1.

They may have thought they had the next one in the bag as it was against Woden Valley, otherwise known as ‘the girls’ team!

How their thoughts changed as they were palmed off by the muscle and skill of the girls with a loss of 3 nil. It was quite amusing for the parents to watch, as there was a bit of push going on and some of the boys didn’t know how to take it!!!

Very funny but I think they’ve learnt this year that this is what happens and they’ve learnt to give a bit back. The games preceding these were mostly wins with 2 draws. To put it quite simply the boys were on fire! With their abundance of soccer skills not to mention their great teamwork it’s no wonder they performed well each game.

Leading up to the last game of the season we were sitting on 32 points and Woden Valley were sitting on 33. In order for us to finish first on the ladder we needed to win our last game and for Woden Valley to either lose or draw theirs.

We won ours 5-1 and were eagerly waiting for the score between Woden Valley and Monaro Pumas.......wait for it................’1-1 draw’. The boys, their coach and all of the parents and families were absolutely delighted that the boys were able to pull through and secure first place!!

Anyway that’s a short quick summary of our season and I’m sure the boys loved every minute of it. From participating in the Kanga Cup, training, game days and general behaviour the boys were an absolute joy to Manage. I hope that you come back next year to enjoy another season.

Huge Thanks to Ryan

A huge thank you to Ryan for his dedication to the boys and the time that you put into them each week. You can tell from the way that they played this year that it’s a testament to the way you coach and guide them. This will of course improve over the coming years and I hope that you are there to support them. An indication of how the team felt about Ryan was that 9 players from the team watched and supported him in his own Grand Final victory.

Thank you to the committee for running another great year. I would also like to thank Toni personally for her guidance as a first time Manager. I have learnt that if you turn up to a game without FFA numbers, Toni was there to help!!! How dumb I felt :) A huge thank you

See you next year

U16 Div 2: Season Review The importance of losing

Belwest U16 Div 2 had a tough weekend. Our 8 game winning streak was ended by Gungahlin in a comfortable fashion, 6-3. After the disappointment of missing out on the goal of a 10 win undefeated steak to end the season, I gradually got round to reviewing the game and our season as a whole, and it once again concreted my belief in the importance of losing.

I firmly believe you cannot become a successful team without losing games. If you win every game you never understand where your weak areas are on the pitch, and when you come up against a team you are not ready for, you can't adapt your play to compete with them.

We learnt this the hard way, with four straight losses to start the season. But a loss can be as important as a win, as long as you learn for it. And we did.

The 5 nil thumping we suffered against Belnorth told us we were not balanced properly across the pitch so we tightened up our defence; changed formations and players' positions; and kept defence simple from the back. This eventually led to a string of clean sheets.

Our 3-2 loss to Weston Creek showed we lacked desperation in the box and strength in the air. When the ball is loose in your area you put everything on the line to clear it out, and do whatever it takes to clear that ball before the bounce. We worked hard on this and now the opposition do not get any easy tap ins, we make them work hard for their goals.

Belwest U16 Div 2

U16 Div 2 (cont)

Our 3-2 loss to St Edmunds showed us teams needed a lot of luck to score goals against us because we played them off the park, but we couldn't finish the ample opportunities we were creating. So we re-balanced the team again to put more speed up front and utilise counter attacking to compliment our ability to absorb pressure and create goal scoring chances quickly.

Everything we learned from those losses set us up for the 8 win steak, including wins against the top two teams in our league, only shedding one goal and scoring 5 over those two games.

We also achieved that 8 win streak while constantly missing players in key positions, but with a solid base centred around basic elements of the game such as passing to hold possession, simple and organised defence and counter attacking with speed, the loss of players had no bearing on our winning run.

This was never more evident than in our 3-2 win from behind against Weston Creek, where we had no subs and were down to 10 men for last 20 minutes. We lost an early goal from a superb headed corner, but played out of our skins for 90 minutes to secure the win.

So, what can we learn from the loss to Gungahlin? We already know we have the ability to outplay the top teams in the league; we can score goals; we can keep clean sheets; we can hold possession; we can win posses-sion. So what made the difference?

Preparation.

Ability doesn’t mean anything if you are not prepared. We started off with a late and lazy warm up and when the whistle blew we were not physically or mentally prepared, and it cost us three very quick goals

We got into the game after 20 minutes, but by then it was too late and Gungahlin had set the tone. We had some really brilliant periods of play, maintaining possession, breaking down their well-structured defence, creating shooting chances and maybe with a little bit of luck we could have turned the game around.

And finally....

Belwest - 30 Years of the Fox

U16 Div 2 (cont)

As a coach you remember moments, rather than scorelines or league tables.

I’ll remember the fact that our players didn’t turn on each other and blame each other, which would have been so easy to do.

I’ll remember that even 3 goals down we never gave up and pushed the game to the end.

I’ll remember the 10 seconds where three different players used two touch passing all the way up the field around a string of opposition midfielders to set up a through ball for the striker. It was beautiful to watch and Gungahlin couldn’t get anywhere near us; it once again showed how much we had achieved this season.

So for our final game of the season, we now know what is needed from us to finish off with a win and it has nothing to do with ability. We have all the tools to do the job and we have earned every win we have on our score sheet, we just need to make sure we are 100% ready and prepared once the ref blows the whistle.

And if none of that works, you blame bad luck and feel comfort in the absolute fact that “we will smash them next year!”.

Lee Powick, U16 Div 2 Coach

Final score 4-2 in Belwest's favour!

I think the team learnt from its loss the week before.

Belwest - 30 Years of the Fox

Hi Belwest familyAnother season over and I thought it was about time that I had something published to update the Belwest family on the success of our women’s programme.

This season three Belwest women’s teams competed in the various divisions on offer. One team was entered in each of State League 2, State League 3 and State League 4. All three teams acquitted themselves extremely well. Both State League 2 and 4 teams finished 2nd in their respective leagues with State League 3 just missing out on a top 4th berth. State League 4 proceeded through to the grand final but unfortunately was unable to replicate their successes of the past two seasons and bring home the silverware. There is always next year.

Thinking about playing in 2013? Players at all levels are more than welcome. Training is conducted on Tuesday and/or Thursday from 6.30pm till 8pm at Scullin Oval. The commencement date of training along with contact details will be announced on the website next year.

Regards, Kerrie Murray
