Year 7-1 Wow! Can someone give me back my last few weeks please? I’ve surely misplaced them as it cannot be the last week of term already! It’s scary how fast time flies when you’re having so much fun. I can honestly say that I have absolutely loved welcoming our newest members to Belridge SESC. It has been such a fantastic term and I would like to congratulate everyone for successfully completing their first term at high school! I am super impressed with how much everyone has achieved already! It was great to see so many parents at our Parent Evening on the 16

th of March. The feedback

was really positive and I am glad you had the opportunity to see a brief snapshot of what we’ve been doing in the classroom! As you could see, all our curriculum programs are well underway and students are working hard towards their IEP goals. We celebrated Harmony Day on the 21

st of March by wearing orange and learning about the

range of cultures that live in Australia. I was blown away by the knowledge and sharing of ideas that came from our discussion. I particularly liked students’ individual responses to how we can make the world a peaceful place! I think our world leaders could take some tips from 7-1! We had a great day out at the park on the 10

th of March! I was so pleased to see how well-

behaved, polite and responsible everyone was outside of the school environment. Excursions are very exciting and sometimes it can be difficult to remember to listen and do what the teachers ask but everyone behaved beautifully. Not only has everyone shown how grown up, organised and independent they can be this term,

they have also been helpful in the classroom and shown enthusiasm for learning! I sincerely look

forward to what next term will bring! I can’t wait to see everyone back at school bright eyed and

bushy tailed from a well-deserved break! Please feel free to let me know if anyone is doing

anything exciting over the holidays or send in some photos so we can all see what’s been

happening.

Enjoy your break! I’ll be relaxing on mine, one very happy teacher!

Year 7-2 Term One is coming to an end and we have had a great start to the year!

We have done a range of different activities in both Science and Humanities. One we particularly

enjoyed, was a game where we had to dress to suit different climates. It was funny to watch our

class members get all dressed up. We get to do Humanities and Science with the other year 7

class each week, so we can share ideas and have fun with students from across the whole year!

We also went on an excursion to Rotary Park with other students from year 7 and the MAG class.

The weather was beautiful and we had a fun filled day. Our class even got to make the yummy

scones and muffins that we took with us on the picnic.

The most exciting part of the term however, was our day out at the WACA with class 8-2.

Throughout Term 1, we have been joining in with the year 8 class to practice cricket skills and play

games; we even have special cricket clinics on a Thursday. We were very lucky to be personally

invited to go to the WACA, along with some of the students from Beldon Education Support

Centre. We played different cricket games, and even had a tour of the grounds. It was an

awesome day, with awesome friends!

Year 7-11 MAG Our students have been working hard while having lots of fun in Term One. For ASDAN Horticulture with Ms Vander Loop they have been planting vegetables in the garden and in Science identifying the weather, the appropriate tools and clothes they need for gardening. They have enjoyed making popcorn and slime for ASDAN Sensory and of course swimming…we all love swimming on Fridays! For Health this term the focus has been for our students to practice hand washing, cleaning their face, brushing their teeth and hair. We have some very cool looking students when they check themselves in the mirror when they have finished. In History and Maths with Mrs Carlyon and Ms Butler the students have been doing lots of data collection to see how they are similar or different in their appearance such as comparing their height, the size of their hands and feet, and their eye and hair colour. The students have also been making birthday cards and presents to give to their friends in the class to celebrate their birthday. In Home Economics they have made toasted sandwiches, fruit salad, oat bran bars and mini muffin pizzas. Yum! In Dance class they have been practicing their moves for the Chicken Dance and Superman. Well done to all the students in MAG 7-11 for their super effort

and progress made in Term One!

Year 8-1 Invasion of the Metre Monsters! We have been taken over by Metre Monsters; students designed their own helpful metre

monster as a strong visual reminder of a metre. Students have been using their monsters to

locate objects that are bigger and smaller than a metre and working in small groups to measure

large areas around the school such as the basketball and netball courts.

Science This term students have been exploring the specialised structures and functions of animal cells.

As their knowledge developed students began to make model animal cells using balloons, jelly

and lollies and Styrofoam to demonstrate their understanding of a cell membrane, nucleus,

cytoplasm, lysosomes, mitochondrion and vacuoles.

English Students have been taking part in daily MultiLit, spelling and literacy tasks. Students work one-

one during MultiLit, in small groups for spelling and writing tasks and whole class guided reading.

Guided reading this term has focused on listening to descriptive texts and drawing the picture the

description created in our head.

April 2017

Year 8-2 As Term 1 draws to a close we can celebrate the outstanding efforts of our students over the term. Students are enjoying the MultiLit Reading Tutor Program and making pleasing progress. Others have produced well written and informative reports they have researched after completing reading activities on various topics. All students have been amazed at the physical changes that occurred when, in a Science lesson, we dissolved salt in hot water and then left a string weighted by a paper clip in the jar of the super-saturated salt solution. Masses of tiny cuboid salt crystals formed. Please see the photos of our experiment below. It is really pleasing to see most students making an effort to complete homework tasks and I thank parents and carers for assisting with this. All tasks serve to help consolidate skills being taught in class and the extra practice helps. Year 8-2 and Year 7-2 have joined together for PE lessons this term. As part of our focus on cricket skills the WACA Multicultural and Disability team provided four skill development sessions for us here at school. Last Wednesday, we were then invited to the WA Cricket Association grounds in East Perth for a day of cricket skills games and a tour of the venue along with the Year 4/5 and 5/6 students from Beldon Education Support Centre. We had a wonderful day. The weather was perfect, the activities provided by the highly competent team of cricket coaches from the WACA led by the program coordinator Jordan Miller and the opportunity to have a tour of the members rooms, players training areas, look at aspects of the history of the game and famous players from WA were all top class. All our students participated well and were a credit to the school. Please see the pictures of our day that are displayed in this newsletter. At the end of the day we were presented with a participation flag that we will display in the school Administration block. It has been a really successful first term and our students are to be congratulated for their willingness to work together and support each other as friends. Thank you too to all of the teachers/ EAs who work so hard with our students and to our parents and carers who support us all in this task. Enjoy the school holidays

Year 9-1 During March the students in 9-1 have continued to work very industriously in all subjects. In Mathematics, the students have been learning how numbers can be incorporated into a wide range of fun as well as problem solving activities. Working in groups they have enjoyed interacting with their peers in a fun and educational way. The students have been developing their literacy skills in Multi Lit, Reading, Writing, Comprehension, and Speaking and Listening. In Humanities, we have been learning about World War 1. The students have developed a good understanding of the effects such conflicts have on the lives of all involved. Currently all students are very excited as we are collecting the ANZAC commemorative coins offered in the newspapers up until the 9

th April. The students are really interested in the stories associated

with people who have received the medals and what the medals look like. The students understand and appreciate the sacrifices of our soldiers and the Medals of Honour which a soldier can receive. In Science the students have developed an interest in ecosystems and they are currently creating their own ecosystems using the internet. They have been able to select their own organism and population of plants and animals, which they have enjoyed. We have also been growing plants in the class from a bean and how environmental factors such as sunlight and water affect the plant. Each week we observe if the plant has grown. We record this information though pictures, photographs and written information. One of the highlights of the term was attending the Belsurf Beach Carnival at Hillarys. The weather was magnificent and the students had fun joining in the games and activities. A great time was had by everyone who participated. During sport lessons, the students have enjoyed weekly swimming lessons at the Arena in Joondalup and either T Ball, Dance or Multi skills on Tuesday afternoons. Term One has been very productive and lots of fun. We look forward to working together again with our wonderful students and staff in Term Two. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Year 9-2 It seems hard to believe we have finished the term already! All of the students in class have settled into the weekly routines and work. It has been a very busy but enjoyable start to the 2017 school year. In Maths Money and Health studies the students went to the local Coles to shop for food to make a healthy breakfast, the most important meal of the day. We made out lists and calculated what we spent on ingredients and prepared some quick and healthy breakfasts ‘Master Chef‘style. We sampled: Bagels Gone Bananas, Kicked up Quesadillas, Berry and yogurt smoothies and Ham and Cheese melts. In Physical Science we had a great time exploring how sound travels in waves. We completed a string phone experiment investigating how sound vibrations travel down a taut string and were amplified by the cup so we could hear our partners talking. We had long lines and short lines. We even crossed lines for 4 way conversations! On Tuesdays in Physical Education the students participated in T-ball with Mrs Osborne or dance with Ms Thompson. During T-ball there were mixed teams with students from years 7-9 spurring some fierce competition with good sportsmanship displayed by all students. Everyone gave 100% batting, throwing, catching and running. There was some great fielding, catching pop-fly balls and big hits scoring home runs. We have also read about the ANZAC’s, Gallipoli, the sacrifices made and how we celebrate the ‘spirit of the Anzacs' today. The school will hold an ANZAC assembly on Monday the 24

th of April.

From all the staff in 9-2 have a happy, safe and relaxing holiday break!

Year 10-1 What a busy term we have had, with many new and enjoyable experiences.

We have visited Wanneroo Library, Hillary’s Boat Harbour, Neil Hawkins Park

and taken part in the yearly BELSURF or Rotary park day out. The students

displayed very appropriate behaviours in each of these activities and were

supportive of their peers.

In DFES we have participated in two excursions to the Fire and Emergency

Heritage Centre in Perth and to Ern Halliday Recreation Centre to participate

in some team building skills. At the Fire and Emergency Heritage centre the

students got to put on fire jackets and helmets and sit in the fire truck, which

was very exciting. They also participated in a fire safety workshop and learnt

about safely exiting a house that is on fire and how important it is to stay calm,

remain low and have a planned muster point. At Ern Halliday the students

participated in a number of teambuilding activities that encouraged effective

communication, support of their peers and confidence within themselves.

It was enjoyed by all and we look forward to our next visit to the centre.

In their Agrifoods course the students have continued to work on the garden,

clearing out weeds, mulching and planting flowers and vegetables. They have

also begun growing bean sprouts in the classroom, which are monitored daily

to see progress and ensure they have sufficient water. The students have

worked very hard and the garden is looking great!

I hope everyone enjoys a well-earned break over the holidays and the

Easter Bunny comes to visit! I look forward to seeing you all well rested and

ready for another busy term.

Year 10-2 With the end of Term One fast approaching, class 10-2 reflect upon a busy opening 10 weeks. All students have worked extremely hard to develop themselves in all subjects. As part of their English objects, the students have been working at completing forms and practicing their hand writing. In Maths, students have begun to design their very own Nature Park which includes spending, budgeting and making a profit. For History, students have produced a power-point presentation on a digital invention, inventions such as the first home computer, the first touch screen and the first PlayStation console. In D&T with Mr Silva, our class have been designing and creating a portable chessboard. For DFES, students have been looking into navigation and map reading. We have also visited the DFES Heritage Centre in Perth where we learnt all about fire safety in the home. Community Access has proved to be a popular subject with students thoroughly enjoying going out into the community. So far this term we have visited Lakeside Joondalup where students were participants in a ‘Beat the Clock’ task which involved searching for shops, finding them on the centre map and locating particular items in store. The second week of Community Access saw us visit Wanneroo Library, Museum and Art Gallery. All three were a big hit but the Art Gallery was predominantly favoured as the students got to see Art produced by year 11 and 12 students from local schools. To add an extra element of excitement, students also got to vote for their favourite art piece which would then go into a draw to win a prize. And finally, all students have eased into their Agri-Foods and ASDAN courses well. Students appear to enjoy caring for the garden and we have also begun to think of ways to create an outdoor classroom… watch this space! So as you can see it has been a busy term for class 10-2. Can I take this opportunity to say a massive well done to all students for starting year 10 so well and to enjoy the two week break.

April 2017

Hi Everyone Well that was first term all done and dusted. I still feel a little cheated about our funny summer weather this year but thankfully it is still warm enough to enjoy being outside.

Speaking of outside, the student councillors ran a fantastic sausage sizzle to raise funds for the Red Cross Appeal and had a wonderful time cooking and preparing the food for their fellow students and teachers. It was great to see them enjoying providing a service for others. The area outside the ILC is so pleasant that we decided to have the parents and carers afternoon tea in this same cool area.

The garden smelled delicious with the wafting perfume of Carnations floating through. I met some wonderful parents and carers, thank you to all who attended.

The student councillors will be finishing the term off sharing some fun Easter biscuit decorating with their fellow class mates. I hope you all find lots of Easter Eggs and enjoy the term break with your families. Please remember I am available on Wednesday and Thursday for a chat or assistance in any way. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you feel you would like some help, no problem is too small or too large. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Year 11-1 What a busy time the Year 11-1 students have had since the last newsletter! Students are making excellent progress with all their ASDAN courses as they explore jobs in their families as well as the local community. Workplace Learning is going well for all as they practice some theory discussed in the classroom while at their worksites. Wishing all of you a safe and happy Easter break. Thanks for all of your support this term and look forward to Term 2 adventures on our return!

Year 11-2 Hello from 11.2… Mathematics lessons have aimed at developing student’s money-focused learning objectives. They have practised these using online programs, worksheets, games and practical activities. Mother’s Day stall preparations have been another way students have put their learning into practice. Students have calculated different costs of items purchased for the stall, sale amounts and the changed received when paying with different values. They have also been learning about the concepts, profit and loss. English lessons have encouraged students to self-reflect on their personal attributes and interests. They have researched the skills needed to undertake a range of different jobs, including employability skills: communication, teamwork, problem solving, initiative, planning and organising, self-management, learning and technology. Activities have challenged the students to remember each of these skills and relate them to their own experiences and workplaces. The ASDAN Health Short Course has encouraged the Year 11s to take ownership of their learning and be creative in their ideas of ways to present their work. The classroom is a hive of activity during Health with each student working on a different task.

Thank you to Deb , the School Nurse for visiting our classroom to speak about Asthma First Aid. This addressed a learning component of the Transport and Logistics Certificate I Course that students are studying. Students revised the responses to take when someone is having an asthma attack and the responses to take in the case of an emergency. Students have built a rapport with the residents from Mercy Care, Joondalup

and are looking forward to hosting an Easter Bingo session

with them next Friday.

I wish all students and their families a happy Easter and safe break.

DFES Hi Everyone, This is our first newsletter of the year so we would like to welcome you all to DFES 2017. All of the DFES Cadets have started the term with great enthusiasm. The Year 11’s and 12’s have been reviewing last years work and also choosing new team names for this year. For the new recruits in Year 10 they have completed the Cadet Workbook, where they learnt about their rights and responsibilities while in their role as a DFES Cadet. Plus they were each issued with a new DFES T-shirt and like years 11 and 12, democratically voted on their chosen team name. All the cadets have had the opportunity to participate in two excursions this term. Years 10, 11 and 12 visited Ern Halliday in Hillarys and were able to experience ‘hand on’ how to problem solve and work as a cohesive team during the teambuilding activities. Also, at Ern Halliday, the Year 11 cadets furthered their skills in orienteering, while the Year 12’s either conquered their fear of the Big Swing or encouraged and worked together as a team on the Crate Climb challenge.

The Year 10 cadets visited the DFES Education and Heritage Centre in the city. During the visit the cadets completed the “Home Fire Safety’ program and were given a guided tour of the centre. We felt the highlight of the visit was definitely the cadets trying on the uniforms and then climbing aboard the fire engine—a great photo opportunity.

Thank you Cadets, we have had a fantastic first term and we are looking forward to the rest of the year.

Belridge Secondary ESC News

Year 12-1 Well it’s hard to believe that the first term is almost over! This term has been a time of establishing class routines, delving into ASDAN programs, running the Cobra Café and lots of DFES adventures. But most importantly, last Friday night we celebrated the greatly anticipated School Ball! This school event was approached with much eagerness and enthusiasm. The students could hardly contain their excitement as the big day approached. Suits and dresses were purchased and hair styles were decided. Finally it was time for the BALL… Year 12-1 travelled in style - by limo - to the Hyatt Regency Hotel Perth, where they posed for

the paparazzi and enjoyed a pre-dinner drink.

The Princess was escorted by the Princes into the

ballroom and the nights festivities began. A buffet dinner

was enjoyed by all, followed by grooving and shaking

on the dance floor!

Congratulations to Simone who got awarded with the title of Miss Charming and Carlos who

received Mr Charming - two very worthy winners.

Year 12-2 Congratulations to the hard working students in 12-2. They have done a fantastic job in all aspects of their curriculum, completing 4 units of competency in their Certificate II course and 2 modules in both ASDAN Money Progression and the PSHE Short Course (health and wellbeing). The students have also committed to improving on their goals during workplace learning and it has been a pleasure to hear of the positive feedback from workplace supervisors. Congratulations goes to Kevin and Robert for completing their first term at Trades North and choosing to continue by selecting plastering as their speciality. Also special mention to Leon, Carlos, Kai and Samuel for producing a delicious array of lunches and coffee during Cobra Cafe. The students must also be acknowledged for their positive achievement and behaviour whilst out in the community during DFES AND other excursions. On Wednesday Week 9, the class went to the RAC BStreetSmart stage show at Perth Arena. This is a free annual event for student in Years 10-12 and this year a record of nearly 9000 students attended. The day was a great continuation of the work that the students completed during their Keys for Life course with Mrs Collins in 2016. It featured a re-enactment of a major car crash and guest speakers of those effected both directly and as family members by real crashes on WA roads. Thank you to Mr Paul Bennett from the Secondary College for including us in their transport arrangements. Once back at school, the students spoke about what they had learned on the day and completed a post event survey. The highlight of the term of course was the School Ball. The class had a fabulous night which included a limo ride, photos, loads of food and non stop dancing by both students and staff. Congratulations to our 2017 Mr Charming - Carlos Reyes who deservedly took out the crown this year.

Mrs Lauren Spedding Year 12-2 Teacher

Workplace Learning I must congratulate our students on Workplace Learning this term for an excellent start to learning new skill sets in our local placements. I have been so impressed with the Year 11 students. They are very positive and willing to learn and be great ambassadors for our school in various locations around the community. A really positive start for these students in the workplace learning program. Our Year 12 students are also working hard with two placements a week. I have had employers say that they are really impressed with students work and attitude and they really find their help valuable on the days they are there. Well done to both groups of students and staff for helping to develop positive work ethics. Our Agrifoods students are also working hard and with Iain Brunton and Mrs Leroy and their class EA’s are creating the new produce in our garden patch. Well done everyone as it’s wonderful to be able to pick fruit and vegies and use them in the café and food preparation classes. Students in Year 11 Transport and Logistics are busy completing their course and learning some useful skills which they are applying at WPL on a Wednesday. It is great to visit students on work sites and see that they know the safety and manual handling skills to use equipment and stock which they have learned in the classroom. The weekly recycling program, which is part of T&L is also a help for all classrooms to teach students sustainable practices and recycle paper instead of filling up the rubbish bins. We are hosting our BEYOND SCHOOL parent information evening next term on TUESDAY 9 MAY from 6 to 8PM with many providers and trainers for parents and students to speak with to get some information about transition from school. We strongly urge all parents especially Year 9-12 parents to come along and start the learning journey of what to do post school for your kids. Please be looking for notes this week and posters next term. Have a safe and restful holiday and EASTER and I look forward to seeing what you can achieve next term.
