Dear UUMC family and friends,
Forrest and I continue to enjoy getting to know you! Thank you for the invitations to small dinner
groups, classes, and book discussions. I have asked our Staff-Parish Relations Committee to work with
the congregation in setting up additional small group gatherings where I will have the opportunity to
meet more of you. We hope to set up a number of these times up in the near future. (Sometimes Forrest
will be with me, and sometimes not, depending on his work schedule.) Please see Barbara Robison’s
invitation and contact information on page 3 of this newsletter.
As we head into our fall rhythm of new opportunities to learn and serve, your current leadership and I
will ask you to discern prayerfully your promptings to serve in the season ahead. On September 15, after
worship, our music, mission, and ministry groups will be out and about with their most enthusiastic
spokespeople, ready to make it easy for you to become part of a ministry of our church.
It takes all of us to live fully into our vision of Believe, Belong, Be Love!
Additionally, your Lay Leadership/Nominations team has begun to consider prayerfully the slate of
leaders and committee members who will help us live into the new church structure. After a number of
conversations, I understand the goals of openness, transparency, coordinated focus, and adaptive leader-
ship inherent in the new structure and intend to help us live into them. Along with those who designed it,
I ask that you give it a chance to succeed.
September’s scripture texts and messages will draw on the gospel of Luke. We’ll revisit some familiar
stories with current questions about stress, busyness, and financial peace. (The parable of The Rich Fool
is a perfect advertisement for Financial Peace University – sign up!).
Grace and peace,
Scriptures in September

Small Dinner Groups Would you like to make some friends in our congregation? Our new small dinner groups keep seats
open for you. Please call the office if you would like to join.
Sisters September 24th is the date for the next Sisters Book club meeting. We will be meeting at the home
of Anne Teunis (949-651-0747). The book for discussion is Elephant Keeper by Christopher Nichol-
son. It is about Tom and the two elephants who move from the green fields and woods of the Eng-
lish countryside to the dark streets and alleys of late-eighteenth century London, reflecting both the
beauty and violence of the age. “Nicholson’s lush writing and deft storytelling complement a capti-
vating tale of love and loyalty between one man and the two elephants that change the lives of all
who meet them.”
Nancy O’Connor will bring us the devotion and Barbara Albers is providing dessert.
We will be selecting the next books that we want to read, so come with your suggestions for Octo-
ber, November and January. There is no meeting in December. All women of the church are wel-
come. See you at Sisters!
PASTOR PAIGE WOULD LIKE TO MEET YOU!
Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) has been asked to arrange small group meetings with Pas-tor Paige so that she can get to know everyone in the congregation on a personal level. Our small dinner groups have started to schedule these events with her and she has had the opportunity to meet with many of us already. There are still people that she has not had the opportunity to meet indi-vidually. Let’s help her get to know us and vice versa. SPRC is looking for volunteers to host small groups (8-10) and people who have not yet had the op-portunity to get further acquainted with Pastor Paige. To be included in an upcoming session or to ask questions, please contact Barbara Robison by e-mail ([email protected]) or by phone (949-262-1257) evenings and weekends.

Backpacks / Food needed for Families Forward It is back to school time (year-a-round-school starting a new year) and Families Forward’s families need help.
Backpacks, pencils, papers, crayons, and all the other school supplies are needed. UUMC will be collecting these
items from now through the first of September. Donated new grade appropriate school supplies and backpacks are
distributed to students helping them start off on the same foot as their peers building their confidence in the com-
ing school year. Drop supplies in the blue bin::
Food is also still needed for Families Forward—write check or drop off donations in blue bin.
Save those Paperbacks
We will once again be collecting new or gently used books for our sisters and brothers at the James A. Musick Facility, a minimum-security branch of the Orange County Jail System. These books should be paperbacks (hard-covered books are not allowed) with a variety of reading levels of interest to men and women. Bibles are fine, as long as they are paperbacks. Most magazines are also accepted; ones that cannot be used will be discarded.
Please be sure to remove any personal identifying information before donating your books. There will be a box on the patio to collect books and magazines on October 13, 20, and 27.
