The World’s Oceans71% of the Earth’s surface is covered
by ocean water.
7
Oceans The oceans are the Atlantic, Pacific,
Indian and Arctic. All the oceans and seas are actually one
continuous body of water.
8
Oceans Scientists believe that the ocean was
formed when volcanoes erupted giving off water vapor.
Over millions of years the vapor cooled and rained into low areas called basins.

9
Properties of Ocean Water Ocean water is a mixture of gases
– oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen ....and solids (dissolved salt!) The salts come from rocks and erupting
volcanoes
10
Salinity Salinity describes the amount of
dissolved salt in the ocean. The average salinity of ocean is 33-35
parts per thousand.
11
Salinity LevelsThe salinity is lower in areas
where freshwater rivers run into the ocean.
12
Quick Quiz (Output)
1. Identify the origin of the water in the Earth’s oceans.
2. Explain how salt gets into seawater.
13
Tides Tides are caused by the gravitational
pull of the moon and the sun. Although the sun is bigger in mass,
the moon is closer, so the moon has a greater effect than the sun.
14
High and Low Tides The earth rotates it passes under the moon. The part of the earth that is passing under the moon
will have a high tide and so will the area directly on the other side of the globe.
The areas in between will have low tide.
15
Tidal RangeThe tidal range is the difference between the
level of the ocean at high and low tide.
Groups of Marine Life
16
Three Groups1. Plankton- organisms that drift freely near the ocean’s surface.
17
Three Groups
2. Nekton- organisms that swim actively in open water.
18
Three Groups3. Benthos- organisms that live at the bottom of the ocean.

2. Does the sun or the moon have a greater effect on tides? Why?
– The moon! The sun is bigger in mass, but the moon is closer, so it has a greater effect than the sun.
