Turn and Talk
What is a totalitarian government?
ANS: A government that controls every aspect of its citizens lives
What is fascism?
• Fascism is a political movement that emphasizes loyalty to the leader and to the state above all
• They can be elected, but usually try to take power away from legislative bodies (such as America’s Congress)
• Extreme form of nationalism
• Denied individual rights
• State was supreme
What is communism?
• Communism is an economic system that emphasizes classless society and government control of the means of production
• Remember that communism is an economic system, not a political one. Joseph Stalin was a totalitarian dictator, and his country happened to be a communist country, which is why communism is mentioned here
Why did totalitarianism emerge?
• During the global depression, many people reduced spending. Many others lost their jobs and homes and became homeless
• It was generally a very fearful time
• Because people were afraid, they looked toward the government to help them, and Hitler and Stalin were able to gain power. People were happy to give up their freedom in exchange for safety and security
