Word Wall Vocabulary:

• Black Death: plague that killed at least 1/3rd of the population in Europe during the 1300s

• Epidemic: a disease that spreads very quickly and affects a large number

• Bubonic Plague: one of the three diseases that were part of the “Black Death”

• Hundred Years’ War: war between France and England over the throne

• Joan of Arc: French peasant who fought for the French until she was caught and burnt at the stake

How Hundred Years’ War Ended Medieval Europe

• Change in warfare: introduction of the longbow

• Use of peasant soldiers makes knights obsolete and contributes to the end of feudalism (one of the defining characteristics of the Middle Ages)

• People began to think of the king as a national leader (similar to the change that occurred after the Crusades)

• Taxes were raised to pay for the war, which caused the peasants to revolt

• Illness, killed 1/3rd the population of Europe

• Name comes from black and purple spots on skin

• Also called the Plague of the Bubonic Plague

• Rats carry fleas who spread disease

• Spread along trade routes via blood and air contact

• Coughing, sneezing, and spitting infected saliva spread disease

• Swelling of the lymph nodes

• Puss-filled sores on skin

• High fever, chills, delirium, death

• Because so many serfsdied, the living ones asked for raises which the nobles resisted

• This led to peasant revolts

• Churches lost power when prayer failed to stop the illness

• Breakdown of the manorial system (there were not enough workers)
