Quick Review Sheets have been
created for each grade level to assist
the teacher during administration. It is
recommended that teachers fold their
Quick Review Sheet
in half and place it
in the Teacher’s
Guide for
reference as
needed.

A new school year has begun and it’s time to prepare for Beginning-of-Year (BOY) TPRI administration. To assist you, the
TPRI team would like to share some important reminders with you. TPRI recommends BOY administration begin two
weeks after the start of year for grades 1, 2, and 3. For kindergarten, TPRI recommends that BOY administration begin six
weeks after the start of the year or earlier. Keep in mind that individual schools and districts set the specific dates for
their TPRI administration windows to open and close. The TPRI team suggests an
administration window of 2 weeks or less.
Other important reminders are discussed in the grade level sections that follow. We also
encourage you to click on the link below to view the Beginning-of-Year Administration
Reminders & Updates slide show on our website.

All students in the class will complete the Screening Section. There are two
screening tasks at BOY. Begin with SCR-1, and then proceed to SCR-2. Teachers
should follow the Branching Rules to determine which tasks on the Inventory
Section a student should complete.
All students in kindergarten take the Listening Comprehension portion of the
Inventory Section. The BOY story is The Day the Prince Lost His Tooth.

When giving the TPRI it is critical to be both
consistent and accurate. Accurate information is
important because the TPRI:
· identifies students who may be at-risk;
· influences instruction; and
· provides information for teachers to report to
parents.
Use the TPRI Teacher’s Guide with every student and
every task to ensure consistent and accurate administration. To ensure this, it
is important that teachers:
· read the directions each time the assessment is given;
· remember that when administering the TPRI, it is not a time to teach;
· never provide hints to help students; and
· remain positive and encouraging with all students, without praising
individual answers. You can tell students “thank you” or “nice job” at
the end of the task.
At BOY, teachers complete the Screening Section with all students in the
class. Following the Screening Section, all students take the Spelling and
Word Reading portions of the inventory. You may choose to administer the
Spelling portion of the Inventory Section to the whole class. All students also
take the Reading Accuracy, Fluency, and Comprehension portion of the
inventory. Grade 2 BOY stories are: Story 1, Rosa’s New Friend and Story 2,
Skateboard. Grade 3 BOY stories are: Story 1, A Bully at School and Story 2,
Getting the Vote.
