Leadership at Beecroft Public School is about “service to others”. There are many opportunities at Beecroft to grow as leaders and be leaders of learning. For our students it might be that they get involved as a Reader Leader in the school Library, are members of the SRC or are at present a Peer Support leader. These are just a few examples; there are so many more! With just two weeks into the Peer Support Program, Year 6 leaders and students, K-6, are engaging in meaningful, hands on activities that focus on Promoting Harmony. Lessons are designed to help students explore four specific values: Caring; Respect; Responsibility; and Fair go. One of the benefits of student leadership in schools is the chance to work with others to innovate, collaborate and be creative. It's important for students to experience leadership opportunities during their schooling, to learn the art of building relationships within teams, defining identities and achieving tasks effectively. It also provides an opportunity to learn, to identify and display effective communication and interpersonal skills. At Beecroft Public School, we build various experiential learning activities into our teaching and learning programs that build on the development of every child’s leadership skills. Last week as part of the weekly buddy program, 5J and 1S mindfully engaged in a STEM activity whereby 5J mentored their buddies to build a house (structure) from toothpicks and marshmallows. This engaged students to be creative, collaborative and to communicate with each other in a structured environment. Thank you Mrs Johnson, Miss Wilkins and Mrs Caddy for sharing such a wonderful learning experience and well done 5J and 1S!

City of Sydney Eisteddfod There are many P&C initiatives that operate at Beecroft Public School which enhance the educational and extra-curricular opportunities for our students. Coming up this month is the City of Sydney Eisteddfod. Good Luck to all students who are performing at this eisteddfod. The Band and Strings Program is renowned for its high level and for the breadth of opportunities it provides students. The Band and Strings subcommittee of the P&C is largely managed, and run, by volunteer parents. Thank you to the many volunteers who ensure every detail is managed with care and precision to ensure the program runs smoothly. If you are interested in taking a more active role in the Band and Strings program and would like to learn more about how you can help, please feel free to contact the Band and Strings committee at [email protected]. Deputy Principal’s Report Out and About in Beecroft During this term, it has been a pleasure to walk into classrooms and see students engaged and eager to learn. It has been wonderful to see students thinking creatively in solving mathematical problems and discussing their solutions with their peers. As part of the school plan under Strategic Direction 1: Excellence in Learning, teachers aim to maximise student learning through high quality teaching, curriculum planning and assessment that promotes learning excellence and responds to student need. To achieve this purpose, teachers at Beecroft Public School undertake professional learning and reflect on their practice to maximise student outcomes. To enhance student engagement and maximise student learning, teachers often use manipulatives to teach mathematics. Manipulatives can be a key in providing an effective and engaging lesson in the teaching of mathematics. According to Stein and Bovalino (2001,) “Manipulatives can be important tools in helping students to think and reason in more meaningful ways. By giving students concrete ways to compare and operate on quantities, such manipulatives as pattern blocks, tiles, and cubes can contribute to the development of well-grounded, interconnected understandings of mathematical ideas.” Teachers play a crucial role in helping students use manipulatives successfully, so that they move through the three stages of learning and arrive at a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

Over the last four decades, studies have found that the long-term use in manipulatives has had the following effect:

• Verbalising mathematical thinking. • Discussing mathematical ideas and concepts. • Relating real-world situations to mathematical symbolism. • Working collaboratively. • Thinking divergently to find a variety of ways to solve problems. • Expressing problems and solutions using a variety of mathematical symbols. • Making presentations. • Taking ownership of their learning experiences. • Gaining confidence in their abilities to find solutions to mathematical problems using methods that they come up with themselves

without relying on directions from the teacher.

Providing our students with a variety of mathematical experiences helps move students beyond the traditional and passive practices of teaching and learning by incorporating creation, expression, and the presentation of ideas.

School Interviews Information will be coming home this week regarding parent teacher interviews. Each stage has nominated a day during week 10 for these interviews to take place.

Early Stage 1 – Monday 1 July 2019 Stage 1 – Monday 1 July 2019 Stage 2 – Monday 1 July 2019 Stage 3 – Tuesday 2 July 2019

Later this week, you will be provided with a code which you will use on the website www.schoolinterviews.com. Teachers have nominated their availability during this time on the website. Interviews will run for a maximum of 10 minutes. Parent teacher interviews are a time to discuss how your child has settled into their new class and new routines. It is also an opportunity for teachers to discuss progress made and to highlight further target areas. If you have any further information regarding your child that may assist the teacher, this is also an excellent opportunity to do so. Parent teacher interviews are a wonderful opportunity to further foster positive relationships between your child’s class teacher and yourselves, as being able to work collaboratively provides the best structure for success for your child. Although winter has come this week, last Friday was a beautiful, dry, sunny day for the knights in the garden. How quickly the weather changes. Lots of harvesting of lettuce and silverbeet, and more importantly watering. Time was spent weeding and clearing up, ensuring that the garden looked fabulous. Lots of new year 3 garden knights joining at the moment; making lots of hands to get all the jobs done. More gardening this week. Lots of hay to put on our veggie gardens this week.

School ties are now in stock. Lost property Don't forget to label all of your school uniform items with an iron-on label or laundry proof pen, so that if they get lost they can be returned! Also, please regularly check your children's hats and jackets to make sure they haven't brought home someone elses by mistake. If your child loses something, check lost property first before replacing the item. Things sometimes take a while to get back to their rightful owner, so don’t rush into the Uniform Shop and replace it right away!
