Children will demonstrate the differences between permanent (molars, incisors and canines) and baby teeth by creating their own tooth models with miniature marshmallows. Students will narrate how to how to keep their teeth healthy buy singing dental health songs summarizing the class discussion. Standards Used: Iowa Core 21 st Century Skills Health Literacy Grades Kindregarten2 nd Grade Understand and use basic health concepts to enhance personal, family and community health. Demonstrate healthy behaviors that foster healthy active lifestyles for individuals and the benefit of society. Writing Activities Iowa Core 1 st &2 nd Grade Language Arts W.1.5.    “The  Tooth  Fairy  Came  Last  Night”  Poem    The  Tooth  Fairy  Came  Last  Light  Fill  In  the  Blank  Worksheets  Pencils    New  Toothbrushes  and  Dental  Health  Stickers  for  the  Class  Tooth  Brushing  Chart    Lesson  Introduction:     Approximate  Time:  10-­‐15  minutes  Today  I  am  going  to  read  you  a  story  about  Bear  and  his  first  loose  tooth.    But  first  I  want  you  to  think  about  and  answer  some  questions  for  me.    The  teacher  will  introduce  the  book  by  asking  students  way  do  we  have  teeth?  Could  we  smile  without  teeth?  Would  it  be  hard  to  talk  with  missing  teeth?  Next  the  teacher  will  ask  students  to  raise  their  hands  if  anyone  has  lost  a  baby  tooth  or  if  anyone  has  a  wiggly  tooth?  Finally  the  teacher  will  ask  the  students  to  try  to  a  say  a  tongue  twister  without  using  their  teeth.           Examples  of  Tongue  Twisters:     Upper  roller  lower  roller  Upper  roller  lower  roller.       Bubble  bobble,  bubble  bobble,  bubble  bobble.     I  scream  you  scream  we  all  scream  for  ice  cream.      The  teacher  will  then  proceed  to  read  Book:  Bear’s  Loose  Tooth  by  Karma  Wilson  Aloud  to  the  class  while  thy  are  seated  on  the  floor.    Instructional  Input:   Approximate  Time:  10-­‐15  minutes  After  reading  the  story,  the  teacher  will  ask  student  is  all  teeth  look  the  same  and  how  are  they  different?  The  teacher  will  explain  the  difference  between  baby  teeth  and  permanent  teeth,  and  that  the  baby  teeth  hold  the  space  for  the  permanent  teeth.    When  the  new  permanent  tooth  is  ready,  the  baby  tooth  will  fall  out.    It  is  important  to  keep  baby  teeth  clean  and  healthy  as  well  as  the  new  permanent  teeth  that  replace  them.  The  teacher  will  show  students  a  poster  of  permanent  and  healthy  teeth  and  demonstrate  tooth  brushing  wile  teaching  the  students  a  song  so  they  know  how  long  they  should  brush  their  teeth:  For  example       Sing  to:  "Row,  Row,  Row  Your  Boat"     Brush,  Brush,  Brush  Your  Teeth,     'til  they're  shiny  bright.     They'll  by  healthy,  they'll  be  strong,     if  you  treat  them  right.      The  teacher  will  explain  the  importance  of  how  to  keep  teeth  healthy  by  brushing  your  teeth  at  least  twice  a  day,  use  fluoride  (toothpaste  and  supplements),  visit  the  dentist,  floss  daily,  and  eat  healthy  snacks.    The  teacher  will  show  students  a  poster

of  teeth  that  are  decayed  and  have  cavities  and  explain  to  students  that  thumb  sucking,  eating  sticky  sweets,  drinking  juices  and  soft  drink  is  not  good  for  our  teeth.    Modeling  &  Guided  Practice:   Approximate  Time:  5  Minutes  The  teacher  will  quickly  explain  each  of  the  following  learning  centers  to  the  students  and  show  them  a  finished  product.    Directions  will  be  provide  at  each  learning  center  and  the  teacher  and  paraprofessional  will  monitor  and  guide  students  while  they  are  working  at  the  learning  centers.    The  teachers  will  divide  the  students  in  small  groups  and  send  them  to  the  centers  to  begin  their  work.    The  teacher  will  instruct  students  to  complete  at  least  one  craft  activity  one  writing  activity  and  the  types  of  teeth  activity.      Learning  Center  Activities:     Approximate  Time:  35-­‐40  minutes    The  students  will  divide  up  into  small  groups  and  work  in  learning  centers.    Each  group  will  work  about  15  minutes  at  each  center  and  then  rotate  to  another  center.    The  students  can  practice  singing  their  new  tooth  brushing  songs  while  working  in  their  centers.    The  students  do  not  have  to  do  all  the  centers  during  the  class  period,  but  everyone  should  complete  at  least  once  craft  activity  and  at  least  one  writing  activity.    All  students  need  to  get  a  chance  to  do  the  Types  of  teeth  activity.    Students  can  choose  from  making  the  Tooth  Keeper  box  or  Magic  Tooth  Fairy  Wand,  and  students  have  a  choice  between  the  fill  in  the  blank  rhyming  poem,  “The  Tooth  Fairy  Came  Last  Night”  and  writing  a  letter  to  the  Tooth  Fairy.         Tooth  Keeper  Activity:  Students  will  make  and  decorate  tooth  boxes     out  of  matchboxes  to  keep  their  baby  teeth  that  fall  out.                 Magic  Tooth  Fairy  Wand:  Students  will  make  a  magic  tooth  fairy  wand.       Tooth  Fairy  Letter:    Students  will  use  the  Tooth  Fairy  letter  template  and     compose  a  letter  to  the  tooth  fairy  explaining  how  they  are  taking  care  of     their  teeth  and  how  they  have  been  good.         “The  Tooth  Fairy  Came  Last  Night”  Rhyming  Poem:    Student  will  fill  in  the     blanks  with  rhyming  words  such  as  lime/dime,  pickle/nickel,  Jenny/penny,     fence/pence  or  cent,  collar/dollar.       Types  of  Teeth  Marshmallow  Activity:  Students  will  make  a  set  of  teeth     using  play  dough  or  miniature  marshmallows.  Students  will  differentiate     between  molars,  canines  and  incisors  by  flattening  and  clipping  the  corners     of  the  marshmallows.    Wads  of  paper  an  make  indentations  in  the  molars.     Students  can  practice  flossing  their  teeth  with  yarn  and  brushing  teeth  time     permitted.

Independent  Practice:  The  teacher  will  send  home  a  tooth  brushing  chart  and  a  new  toothbrush  for  each  student  along  with  dental  health  stickers  and  encourage  student  to  chart  brushing  their  teeth  for  one  week.        Assessment/Closure:   Approximate  Time:  10  minutes    The  teacher  will  use  a  form  of  informal  assessment  by  asking  students  questions  to  determine  their  understanding  of  the  dental  health  lesson:    Questions  may  include  how  we  keep  our  teeth  clean  and  healthy?  Possible  correct  answers  include:    brush  your  teeth  at  least  twice  a  day,  use  fluoride  (toothpaste  and  supplements),  visit  the  dentist,  floss  daily,  and  eat  healthy  snacks;  eat  crunchy  foods  such  as  carrots  and  apples,  and  more  foods  rich  in  calcium  such  as  a  milk  and  cheese.      The  teacher  may  also  ask  students  what  things  should  we  avoid  to  keep  our  teeth  healthy?    Possible  answers  would  include  thumb  sucking,  eating  sticky  sweets,  drinking  juices  and  soft  drink.    Differentiation:  Students  will  have  some  choices  between  craft  and  writing  activities  in  the  learning  centers.      Students  will  work  in  collaborative  mixed  ability  groups  in  learning  centers.  Students  who  have  difficulty  with  writing  can  do  the  fill  in  the  blank  rhyming  activity.    The  teacher  will  work  one  on  one  with  one  or  two  students  at  a  time  if  extra  help  is  needed  with  directions  and  completing  activities,  etc.      Dental  Hygiene  Coloring  Sheets  can  be  also  be  added  for  students  who  are  not  able  to  write  or  if  a  student  finishes  early.      Reflection/Teacher  Notes:  This  lesson  can  be  adapted  by  omitting  the  learning  centers  and  having  the  class  just  does  the  types  of  teeth  activity  and  singing  the  dental  songs.    Also,  if  there  are  not  enough  paraprofessionals  to  assist  students  with  the  different  learning  centers  the  teacher  could  cut  back  on  the  number  of  learning  centers.          After  this  lesson  or  when  students  have  lost  a  tooth  the  teacher  can  present  students  with  a  Lost  Tooth  certificate  and  the  class  can  celebrate  by  singing  the  “Loose  Tooth  Song.”      I  also  like  the  following  poem:       A  tooth  fell  out,  and  left  a  space     So  big  my  tongue  could  touch  my  face.
