Welcome to the Novena of Grace!

The Novena is nine days of prayer and retreat hosted by St. Francis Xavier Parish in honor of our patron saint and one of the Church’s most famous missionaries, Saint Francis Xavier, who is also one of the founders of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits.

The Novena of Grace will feature inspiring reflections from our presenters, Father Tom Lankenau, S.J. and Sheri Boicourt. This year’s theme comes from Psalm 46: “Be still and know that I am God” which suggests that, when we surrender to God, we find peace even in the midst of the busyness of life.

You are invited to bring the special intentions of your heart to the Novena, so that, through the powerful intercession of St. Francis Xavier, your hopes and desires may lead to whatever is most conducive to the greater glory of God and the greater good of your soul.

While the Novena of Grace is a Catholic prayer tradition, we welcome people of all traditions and faiths. It offers all who participate the time to reflect and to open one’s self to the graces of the Spirit that move us closer to God.

May God bless you with many gifts this Novena of Grace,

Pastor

Our Presenters

Fr. Tom Lankenau, S.J. serves as the assistant pastor at St. Francis Xavier Church. He extends a special welcome to those who are attending their first novena, as well as those who may have been away from the Church. The image on the front cover of this booklet - Rembrandt’s depiction of the gospel story of the storm at sea - Fr. Tom knows first hand. Years ago unemploy-ment had tossed and turned his perfect plans for life. But Jesus calmed this storm and took him to ‘the other side,’ where he embarked on a new path. Little did he know this journey would take him to years of prosperity then unexpectedly to religious life and the priesthood. Now presenting his third Novena of Grace, Fr. Tom shares his passion for Jesus and what He offers to each one of us. His desire is that through this novena you may also experience His power and His companionship.

Sheri Bolcourt comes to us from Idaho. A graduate from Boise State University (GO BRONCOS!) she currently works for the Diocese of Boise supporting the directors of Marriage and Family Life, Religious Education and Catholic Schools. Sheri was baptized into the Church in 1996. After many years of living in chaos and half heartedly following Jesus, Sheri and her husband made the con-scious decision to completely surrender their lives to God. Three years ago, they started all over on the road to trust. With this total surrender, every single door they approached was flung wide open. Not only did their hearts change, but the journey God led them on was nothing short of miraculous. Jesus calmed their storm in His time and in His way and the result was absolute peace. Sheri and her husband, Rusty, have been married 29 years and have three children. Her greatest accomplishment and joy are living out her vocation as wife and mother and serving the Lord wherever He calls. Sheri hopes that her story may inspire you to Be Still and know God so that you too may have absolute peace.

Come As You AreWords and Music by David Crowder, Matt Maher and Ben Glover

Come out of sadness, from wherever you’ve been. Come, broken hearted; let rescue begin. Come find your mercy; oh, sinner, come kneel. Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal. Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal.

So, lay down your burdens, lay down your shame. All who are broken, lift up your face. Oh, wanderer, come home; you’re not too far. So, lay down your hurt, lay down your heart; come as you are.

There’s hope for the hopeless and all those who’ve strayed. Come sit at the table, come taste the grace. There’s rest for the weary, rest that endures. Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t cure.

So lay down your burdens, lay down your shame. All who are broken, lift up your face. Oh, wanderer, come home; you’re not too far. Lay down your hurt, lay down your heart; come as you are. Come as you are. Fall in His arms. Come as you are.

There’s joy for the mourning. Oh, sinner, be still.

Come as you are. Come as you are. Come as you are

O Lord, Hear My Prayer

Most amiable and most loving Saint Francis Xavier, in union with thee I reverently adore the Divine Majesty. I rejoice exceedingly on account of the marvelous gifts, which God bestowed upon thee. I thank God for the special graces He gave thee during thy life on earth and for the great glory that came to thee after thy death. I implore thee to obtain for me, through thy powerful intercession, the greatest of all blessings--that of living and dying in the state of grace. I also beg of thee to secure for me the special favor I ask in this novena. (Here you may mention the grace, spiritual or temporal, that you wish to obtain.) In asking this favor, I am fully resigned to the Divine Will. I pray and desire only to obtain that which is most conducive to the greater glory of God and the greater good of my soul.

V. Pray for us, Saint Francis Xavier.R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Communion Song

Be Still

Concluding Rites & Final Blessing: Presider: The Lord be with you. Assembly: And with your spirit.

Lord, I Need You

Lord, I come, I confess; bowing here I find my rest. Without You I fall apart; You’re the one that guides my heart.

Lord, I need You, oh, I need You; ev’ry hour I need You. My one defense, my righteousness; oh, God, how I need You.

Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more; where grace is found is where You are. Where You are, Lord, I am free; holiness is Christ in me.

Lord, I need You, oh, I need You; ev’ry hour I need You. My one defense, my righteousness; oh, God, how I need You.

So teach my song to rise to You when temptation comes my way. When I cannot stand, I’ll fall on You. Jesus, You’re my hope and stay.

Lord, I need You, oh, I need You; ev’ry hour I need You. My one defense, my righteousness; oh, God, how I need You. You’re my one defense, my righteousness; oh, God, how I need You. My one defense, my righteousness; oh, God, how I need You.

Words and Music by Jesse Reeves, Kristian Stanfill, Matt Maher, Christy Nockels and Daniel Carson

Following the closing song, those who wish may come forward to receive an individual blessing with the relic of St. Francis Xavier.

At that time, please mention your prayer intention to those at the altar.

‘Stay with me, remain here with me, watch and pray.’
