FEWER FOREIGN investors have won approval to do business in Thailand this month under tHe Foreign Business Act than a year ago, as the country's political woes caused hesitation among overseas interests.

The Business Development Department yesterday reportedthat 26 foreign companies had been approved for setting up business in the Kingdom this month, bringing 'in about Bt2.22 billionofinitial cap- . ita!'

Srirat Rastapana, permanent secretaryofthe Commerce Minish}" said the approvals should create at least 354_new jobs for Thais: The lower number of approvals may have been a result of a lower number of requests amid concerns over political instability. .

Compared with March last year, the number of foreign companies that wereapproved dropped by 26 percent, but initial investment capi tal increased 34 per cen t. However, compared with March's figure, February, the number of foreign companies that were approved for this month was up by is per cen,t, and initial capital rose 21 per cerit.

For the first quarter ofthis year, a total ofS6 foreign firms have been approved under the FBA, bringing in Bt4.S billion initial. investment capital. The number of approved companies dropped by 13 per cent · compared with the first quarter Of 2013, but initial capital was. up by 32 per cent year on year.

Most of the firms approved this month are related to financial services, consultancy and management for su bsidiary com panies, and firms contracted with state-owned enterprises.

Thailand's export promotion and

development strategies 2014

A midst the hot winds that signal the arrival of the hot season, it seems like the hot weather is nol as hot as . int~mational trade trends that are becoming more

competitive every moment. Amidst current political winds, exporting is now the

main topic of international trade. Leading international organisations estimate that global trade will have better growth this year than last year.

Furthermore, the ASEAN .EconorIDc Community (AEC), which will begin full implementation in late 2015, will be a good catalyst. The ASEAN population of 650 people is so enthusiastic about economic cooperation that it will bring As'ian lifestyles closer together.

Preparations by the government, private and public sectors is a ·major step towards change, especially for Th.a:iland's trade on the world stage which is now being . closely monitored amidst political situations approaching in "the reformation era". Therefore ways to drive the export sector must be fast, accurate and timely.

Th.e contexiof sustrunable business growth is now focusing on the adaptation 'of the concept of green .. technology, value-added creation, prornoringinnovative . business groups, and supporting and strengthening the competitiveness of entrepreneurs to move towards ·to the goals of the Commerce Ministry:· The Ministiy of 90mmerce has· predicted that Thailand's exports . will expand by 5% to a total value of US$234,900 million in 201~ (2013 export value was approximately US$228,OOO ~lioQ, down 0.31% from the previous year).

Turmoil to cost B430bn

Thailand is expected to lose as much as 430 billion baht in revenue in the first half of the year due to the prolonged political protests.

The economy could also contract by 1 % this year if a new government is not installed by the middle of this year, warns the latest joint survey by the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC). . "Last December, we forecast that the economy would probably grow by 4.5%. Now we forecast it will grow by only 2-3% or an average of2.5% after the country has been caught in a political impasse," said Thanavath Phonvichai, UTCC's vice-president for research.

He said the latest projection is based on a functional government being established in the first half. '

If a new government is n'ot in place, it is highly likely that Thailand will experience an economic contraction of at least 1%. he said.

The study estimated the . revenue loss

to tourism and domestic consumption at about 250 billion Qaht, while investment has been hit by 50-100 billion baht.

The other lost revenue was expected to come from the government's 2-triUionbaht infrastrucrure development plan. now frozen after a court ruling.

Mr Thanavath said the economy in the first quarter 1S forecast to shrink by 1 % due largely to the political crisis, with zero grO\vth in exports.

However. the economy should recover in the third and fourth quarters as the cancellation of the emergency decree boosts tourism and domestic consumption.

The survey found that the North's economy shrank 1.1 %in the first quarter oflast year. with the Northeast contracting 2.1 %, the South down 0.8%, the Central region falling 1.3% and Bangk{)k and surrounding provinces down 0.9%.

The contraction was mainly due to weakened domestic consumption, lower farm product prices and the impact of political turmoil and the declaration of the emergency decree.
