The churches of th e area grew 24 las t year. The biggest had 154 members atyear s end, and the smallest 7, The church in Cidade Nova New City) had itsf i r s t anniversary in February, I t has grown this year from 7 to 11, and hopesto be doubled by the end of this month. Two leaders and another man ar e activei n e v a n g e l i s m .

We have moved from the house we l ived in 20 years . We re now c lose to the newchurch, to the ci ty, to the print shop I direct, and to the school. The move wasprompted by the amount of time I was spending driving, and the $3.00 gasol ine.

Four men from a church which has been badly taught , and mostly not taught , askedme to teach them. We got permission from th e boy who is th e pastor. They arereal ly thirsty fo r Bible knowledge, and don t le t me away unti l after 11 p.m. Webegin at 7:30 on Tuesdays with evangelism, and are teaching s ev er al f am il ie s.

This s ummer we a r e scheduled t o be i n t h e U.S . t e n weeks . We hope t o v i s i t mostof you and t e l l you and show you what s going on here.

Besides gasoline raises, th e cost of l iving is increasing about 5,8% per month.As in other places th e dollar i sn t keeping up, and hasn t r isen at a l l in 1981.

A strong program of leadership training in the churches in NorthernBrazil contributed to growth of 24 7 in 1980. Two of the last fivechurches established in the Belem area were begun by Brazilian me nwithout missionary help. The thir teen Churches of Christ are all led bytheir own men, without dependence on missionaries fo r leadership.

David and Beverly Bayless cooperate with the churches in teachingleaders among men and women who desire to serve t he L ord. This in

cludes teaching by personal example, with methods which can easilybe imitated. Since 1959 they have been working in Belem, the principalcity o f the Amazon Valley, near the mouth o f the Amazon River. Thiscity of 900,000 is influential over a large area of north Brazil. We visited Beverly in El Paso and helpied her get ready fo r the journey. Her sisterand family had helped her much for weeks All of this deeply appreciated, as are special
