7 Ways to Sneak in a Holiday Workout by: April Durrett

Here are a few tips on how to keep in shape while you travel:

Do a “Condensed-but-Intense-Workout”: Customize your own 30-minute workout combining three lower body workouts (squats or lunges) and three upper body exercises (modified push-ups or chair dips).

Warm up with exercises like marching or jogging in place, then do 10-20 repetitions of a lower body exercise and 10-15 repeti-tions of an upper body exercise. Follow this with a minute of jumping jacks or jogging in place. Repeat this routine two or even three times and then try a variation of abdominal crunches, low back lifts and stretches.

Rehearse Your Routine: Practice makes perfect, so in order to be familiar and comfortable with your routine, do it as often as possible.

Get Active in Airports:If flight delays leave you with extra time at the airport, take advantage of it. Store your luggage in an air-port locker and take a hike through the terminal.

Bring Tubes, Bands and More: Don’t leave out fitness equipment when youre packing for a trip. Bring fitness videos, comfort-able walking shoes, a bathing suit or other gear that you can fit in your bag. Inspirational memos from a trainer or a motivational CD could help you get moving.

Get a Jump Rope: Jumping rope is a great way to get in a few minutes of intense cardio workout and it can be done just about anywhere. If you dont have a jump rope, try climbing flights of stairs instead.

Plan to Relax: Don’t overdo it. Staying fit is important, but dont lose sight of the real reason for the holidays spending time with those who are important to you. If you want to do both, involve the whole family in a yoga or tai chi exercise to unwind.

Ease Back Into Your Routine: Depending on how much you worked out during your travel, you may need to gradually ease back into your old routine. You may want to consider using lighter weights or decrease the intensity or the duration of your work-outs until you can return to pre-trip conditions.

With the holidays and new year around the corner, some have travel on their mind. Many people find that during holiday travel, their workout regimen seems to get thrown out of whack.

Fortunately, with a little proactive planning, you can maintain your fitness level, no matter where you are. The key is to be creative and remember that even short workouts are better than no workouts at all.

It’s getting harder and harder to figure out how to travel and look great at the same time. No more large containers of mascara, lip gloss or toothpaste! Hair spray is verboten and gels and mousses in-flight are but a wistful memory for the style-obsessed traveler. But with a little help from the Transpor-tation Security Administration (T.S.A.), you can arrive in style with nothing but small contain-ers of liquid in a clear plastic bag and a little imagination.

1. Tie your hair in a scarf to combat bad hair at the end of a long flight -- make it a Hermes to add extra glamour.2. Hair powder, like a dry shampoo, helps combat oily scalp or limp hair.3. Leave your house with a leave-in conditioner in your hair. Wrap it in a scarf, and you’ll get a deep-conditioning treatment while you earn the miles -- excellent for combat-ing the overly dry air on board4. As always, carry a great hairbrush. They like the junior Maison & Pearson.5. Don’t forget hair shine paper. It helps eliminate static and reduce dullness.6. Cucumber eye pads. Pre-moistened pads soothe and refresh tired and puffy eyes. These can also be refrigerated prior to travel to further refresh eyes during flight.7. Pre-moistened makeup remover cloths remove makeup or just clean the skin mid- or post-travel. Neutrogena or Mac brands are good. (Note: These pre-moistened tow-elettes must be placed in your one-quart bag of liquids.)8. Makeup corrector sticks help correct little smudges, blotches or “I-can’t sleep-because-I’m-stuck-in-the-center-aisle” circles under the eyes.9. Cake mascara is a great alternative when liquids are not allowed. This is the classic Hollywood way to darken and define the eyelashes. It comes in a pressed, cake form and can be mixed with water then applied with a firm brush. They recommend curling the lashes first -- Paula Dorf or Longcils Boncza brands are favorites.10. Solid cocoa butter and cotton gloves for a hand treat-ment (also place in one quart travel bag). And at the end of it all, Edriss and Landy recommend a good night’s sleep, a 16-oz. bottle of water and a pair of designer sunglasses so that others will think you’re a rock star, not just a fatigued fellow traveler.
