Yes, I’m back… you may recall that the last time you heard from me, I was packing up my Milk- Bones and running away to my Grammy’s house. I had hoped that my running away would teach Mom a lesson, but it didn’t. As soon as I came home, she had some dumb turtle costume waiting for me for the October Breakfast with Bassets. I can’t help but notice that SHE wasn’t dressed as a turtle... What’s that all about, anyway?! WHOA! We did have fun at the Halloween party, though. We got to see Tilly May and Bosco again; we always like seeing them. And our new friend Olive was there, too, and she and her person brought some toys for the BHRSC foster dogs. That was very nice of them. Of course, I wasn’t the only one wearing a costume… Homer was there, and he’s always got the coolest costume! This year he was a yellow subma- rine! I don’t think you’d ever catch him dressed as a turtle… hint, hint, Mom! And there was a scary shark that smelled an awful lot like my friend, Mabel, and a dragon that I’m pretty sure was my buddy, Tabasco. And of course, Sheriff Blossom was there to keep us all in line. There was also this funny looking guy there… called himself the Great Zoltar and he said he could tell me my future. I wasn’t too sure about that. I was really kind of afraid he’d tell Mom about my recent past… like the stuff I do when she goes to work, so I steered clear of him. Funny thing, though… he seemed very familiar to me. WHOA! Hello, friends! Yes, I’m back… you may recall that the last time you heard from me, I was packing up my Milk-Bones and running away to my Grammy’s house. Well, that didn’t last very long, mostly be-

cause I missed my kitty. I missed my mom a little bit, too, but mostly, I missed my kitty.

Adoption Success Story! When she was with BHRSC, her name was Anna, but her adoptive family gave her the lovely and dignified name of Annabel Lee. All of the beloved pets in the family have a middle name, and now Anna fits right in. She was adopted on July 10, 2012, and now has a personal chef (Dad, Carl) a personal dog-walker (Mom, Chita) and she may even start training to be a therapy dog. She has two feline siblings, Louisa May, 14 years old and Misty May, 13 years old. Her mom tells us she’s the queen of the castle, but she won’t be the one to tell the cats that news! Congratulations to the whole Miller family, Carl, Chita, Misty May, Louisa May, and Annabel Lee! We are very happy for you!

BHRSC Needs FostersBy Jillian Dunaway, BHRSC Foster CoordinatorA lot of people tell me that they don’t foster hounds because “I could never give them back.” Yes, we all get attached to our foster dog and there is sadness when he or she leaves. But there is also an immense feeling of satisfaction that you have been a major part in saving an animal’s life and that it was your love and care that helped to make that hound such a special animal.

“So how do I prevent myself from becoming too attached?” Most foster families never think of a foster hound as “mine.” Each dog already belongs to someone else -- it just so hap-pens that they haven’t met that person yet. It’s like baby-sitting - the kids can be loads of fun, but they’re not your kids.

Not only does fostering provide a healthier atmosphere for the hound, but it allows us to get to know these dogs, dis-cover their quirks and then better match them to the right human companions.

Fostering makes a difference. Everyone benefits. The foster gets to spend time with a special hound, and BHRSC gains space for another hound in need. The foster hound gets a

break from kennel life and a second chance at becoming a cherished pet.

So what is fostering? For me, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. And you can do it, too!

Please help by applying to be a BHRSC Foster today!

Warm Your Pooch And The Heart Of Another Pooch!

With the weather finally turning cooler, now is a great time to consider buying a new pet bed for your best friend. And your purchase can help a hound in need!

AlphaPooch is working with BHRSC on a buy one, give one program. For every pet bed purchased from AlphaPooch, you can donate a shelter bed to the homeless hounds of Bas-set Hound Rescue of Southern California, just by choosing BHRSC at check-out!

A “Summer Time” Story

In April of this year, our 13 1/2 year old, rescued basset, Maggie crossed The Bridge. We could hardly imagine life without her! Because the last year of Maggie’s life was such a struggle, we really thought our other rescued basset, Lola would now adore getting ALL of our attention. We couldn’t have been more wrong. Lola went into a depression that completely took us by surprise. All of our friends kept whispering in our ears...get another dog.

I received most loving thoughts from my friends concerning Mag-gie’s passing. But a card from my college roommate was the key to our future. After writing a wonderful note, at the very bottom of the card, she wrote, “Summer is coming.” Now anyone who has lived through a Chicago winter truly understands what that means!

I happened to be looking at Petfinder.com when I SAW IT! Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California, “Female Basset Hound, 4 years old looking for a new home… named SUMMER! It was too much of a coincidence, so I did what any “basset person” would do; I sent an e-mail telling my story. There were many e-mails, phone calls, friends offering to help me with the long drive. (Did I mention we live in the San Francisco Bay area?) Before I had time to even think... We were on a ROAD TRIP!

After a very L-O-N-G drive, and a few weeks after my very first inquiry, Summer and I got out of my car and walked into our kitchen. Lola was there waiting happily... “Why have you taken so long to join our family?” There was instant basset chemistry.

Summer has indeed brought us sunshine. A “review” Beginner Obedience Class was all it took, and TAH DAH! Summer just passed the test to become an “Ohlone Humane Society Therapy Dog.” I am ONE PROUD MAMA!!

Oh, I did call my college roommate to share this incredible journey because of what she wrote. Her reply, “Yes, I know!”

Donna and Edwin Lim, Lola & Summer, too!

Event Recap Wine Tasting for the

Hounds of BHRSC!Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California held the 2nd Annual Wine Tasting Event this year, at the lovely Winery at Main Street in Yorba Linda! We had wonderful dona-tions from several local businesses, including Panda Ex-press, Chick-Fil-A, BJ’s Brewery, and of course, the fabu-lous wines of the Winery at Main Street! We also had a wide variety of raffle items and silent auction items that helped us, along with sales of BHRSC labeled wines, to raise almost $2,700.00!

Many thanks to the fabulous folks at the Winery at Main Street. They are always very gracious with us, very ac-commodating and friendly to our supporters.

And thanks to Renee Bane and The Honest Kitchen, and everyone that supported us by coming out and joining us for an afternoon of wine tasting! We hope you had a good time and that you will join us again next year!

And finally, thank you to Miss Bertha, the only hound that was able to join us for the party this year... she was lovely to everyone that came to worship... er, meet her.

Spay/Neuter your Pets!Spaying or neutering your pet is the only way to avoid pet overpopulation. All Basset Hounds adopted through Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California are spayed/neutered before they go to their forever home. If your pets aren’t active in the show ring, please have them spayed or neu-tered for their health and so that you don’t contribute to the pet overpopulation problem. Just because it isn’t broken, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be fixed!

If you would like more information on getting your pets “fixed,” speak to your veterinarian. Or go to www.neuter-spay.org for low-cost spay/neuter services in your area. You can also contact area shelters that may be able to provide information on veterinary clinics in your area.

Want to meet a sweet, mature little lady? Then hurry and get in touch with BHRSC soon! My name is MAGGIE-MAY and I’m just about as sweet as they come. I was surrendered because my family was moving and unable to find accommodations for me. I like other dogs, older children and just hanging out with the entire family. I’ve been told I’m a mellow gal that doesn’t get ruffled about anything – one of the nice things that comes with age. I’m house-trained & I walk nicely on a leash. I do enjoy a nice walk where I can do a lot of sniffing. If you would be so kind as to be my forever family, I would be most grateful.

Hi, my name is BOGIE. I’m a true hound at heart! I’m just a 7-year-old boy looking for a new home. I’d like to find a family with a play buddy, as I do get somewhat lonely. I’ve lived with cats and I’m fine with them, but they don’t really like to play much. Also, I’m house-trained and I know basic commands. I love going on walks and sniffing all the neat stuff we find along the way. And another bonus, I’m a mature boy, and I promise not to chew your things or be destructive while you’re away. Companionship is really important to me, I just want to spend some time with you, and I promise you’ll be first on my lovin’ list!

Hi, my name is ROSCO and I’m ready to meet my new family. I’m a 6 year-old-boy with a lot to offer in the personality department. I’m house-trained and like to go outside to sun myself and sniff in the yard. I haven’t been brought up with other dogs – but I do like them and I think having a buddy would be swell. I will greet you heartily when you come home as I love the attention of my humans. I’m outgoing and ready to meet my new family – so let’s get together and play soon ok?

MR. GOODBAR

Hey there! I’m MOOSE and I’m a 2-year-old boy with just the right amount of swagger and “bassi-tude!” I am sweet and happy, and I got this super cute tri-color thing goin’ on! I’m very loving & love to be around people. My tail is always wagging. I love to roll around on my back, smiling the whole time. Oh, and I do fantastic in the car! What hound doesn’t love the wind in his face? And I don’t even mind sleeping in a crate! Oh yeah, and I have excellent house manners. So how did I end up at BHRSC? Well, my previous owner became ill and could no longer care for me. I’m lonely and sad, but I know that things are about to get better. Could you come and take me home with you? I can’t wait to show you just how adorable I am!

Hi there, my name is ANDERSON. I am a youngish basset gentleman, about 5 years old. I was found wandering the streets in the Inland Empire and brought to a shelter that didn’t have a lot of room for me. I was told that I bet-ter be picked up in the next couple of days “or else.” The “or else” was my death sentence. But the nice people of BHRSC got me pardoned and sprung me from jail. A nice man picked me up and brought me to a safe place where I got all cleaned up and neutered. And now my bags are packed and I’m ready to go! I’m looking for the good life: a cushy bed, regular meals, fresh water, regular walks (aka sniffing expeditions) and lots of belly rubs. Nothing fancy, just the basics. Won’t you please come meet me soon?

Are you looking for Mr. Goodbar? Here I am! I’m a handsome, 6-year-old boy looking for a family to love me. I lived with the same family my whole life, but they fell on hard times and had to move. Sadly, there was no room for me. I”m very confused about what has happened to me, but I don’t hold a grudge, now I just want to go to a nice home where I will love and be loved. I want to spend the rest of my years being spoiled & adored by a family. I love going for walks, playing at the dog park, and I love, love, love squeaky toys! I would like to be an only dog, but if there must be other hounds in our home, I’d prefer to only be subjected to nice, calm, submissive dogs, so that I can pretend to be the king of the castle! I think we’ll get along just great, so please ask about me today!

I’m AUTUMN, a 6-year-old female hound looking for a new family to love me. I came to BHRSC because of allergies. Not mine – but the new baby’s. I’m very sad because I had to move from the only home I’ve ever known. I’m a very sweet girl – a basset hound through and through. It’s great if you already have a dog or two – I like other dogs and I tend to be submissive. I can be a little shy at first, but I’m playful once I get to know you. And I hardly ever bark, more the silent type. I love to give kisses and get treats. I will be a perfect companion for someone that is willing to give me lots of attention and love. Please ask about me today! AUTUMN
