From the desk of Friar Joe Ash Wednesday is February 26, opening the great Season of Lent, our time in the desert with Jesus. Though Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, it remains a tradi-tional and special day to be marked with the ashes, a sign of our mortality and willingness to enter in some penance this Lent. Masses are ALL in the UPPER BASILICA at 6:30 A.M., 8:45 A.M. (School Mass), 12:00 Noon, and 7:00 P.M. (Bi-lingual). Along with Good Friday, Ash Wednesday is a day of abstinence from meat as well as a day of fast (only one full meal). This obligation is for those age 14 and up. Obligation to fast is for those 18-59 years of age. Giving up something you like for Lent is still laudable, but it is also wonderful to do something extra like prayer and good works. On Ash Wednesday we will have our School Mass at 8:45 A.M. thus there will be no 8:45 A.M. School Mass on Thursday, February 27.

LENTEN REGULATIONS Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat as well as days of fast, when

only one full meal is allowed. On days of fast two other meatless meals may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.

The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. The obligation to abstain from meat begins at fourteen (14) years of age. The obligation to fast begins at eighteen (18) years of age and ends at fifty-nine (59) years of age. Although the faithful may excuse themselves for a just cause from these laws of fast and abstinence, there is an obli-

gation to substitute another penance and no Catholic should lightly excuse himself/herself from this obligation in the Lenten season.

CHOCOLATE FOR LENT - Fr. Paul will be offering a Lenten Series for adults. The series, using a delightful film, Chocolat, as a stepping stone for discussion. It is in English, and stars Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche, and Judi Dench. The series examines various attitudes: tradi-tional Lenten penance, prejudice, hospitality, change, family relationships / disfunctions, Chris-tian joy, Easter, the power of the Spirit. The program is interactive: viewing parts of the film, discussion, Scripture, and some prayer. Participants are asked to be faithful to attending most of the sessions. It will take place in the St. Stanislaus School Library on most Thursday evenings of Lent, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Thursday, February 27th. There will be no meeting on March 12th. Bringing chocolate is welcome!

2020 English Lenten Retreat

After much sharing and reflection, our Evangelization Committee has planned a varied English Lenten Re-treat. We know it is difficult for individuals and families, to make three days/nights in a row. Thus, we will have three separate sessions during Lent, of which you can share in one, two, or all three sessions. For others night time is not convenient, these sessions are Sundays at 4:00 PM. All are offered for us to “grow closer to Jesus,” as we commemorate His forty days in the desert.

SIODMA NIEDZIELA ZWYKLA

Ewangelia dzisiejszej niedzieli kontynuuje rozważania podjęte przez Chrystusa w poprzednią niedzielę. Używając tego samego schematu, Jezus naucza swoich uczniów, przeciwstawiając prawo starotestamentalne prawu Nowego Przymierza. Jest to poszerzony wykład przykazana miłości. Miłość Boga nie może być prawdziwa, jeśli nie realizuje się na co dzień w miłości do bliźniego. A miłość ta nie jest ani sentymentalna, ani uczuciowa, ale bardzo konkretna i wymagająca. Co więcej jest ona - albo być powinna - miłością powszechną. Nie ma już - jak w Starym Testamencie - rozróżnienia na bliźniego i obcego, przyjaciela i nieprzyjaciela. Wszyscy są moimi braćmi. Wszystkim jestem obowiązany okazywać szacunek. Wszyscy mają prawo do mojej pomocy i życzliwości, do serdecznego i sprawiedliwego traktowania: "Daj temu, kto cię prosi i nie odwracaj się od tego, kto chce pożyczyć od ciebie." Trudne są te słowa i wiemy sami, jak bardzo wymagające bywa czasami to przykazanie. "Miłujcie waszych nieprzyjaciół i módlcie się za tych, którzy was prześladują." Tak trudno nam na co dzień wprowadzić w życie te wymagania Jezusa, tak trudno okazać wyrozumiałość i serdeczność, życzliwość i wybaczenie tym, którzy na nas "nastają" i nam dokuczają. Co więcej jedynym powodem dla praktyki takiej, powszechnej miłości bliźniego jest doskonałość na miarę doskonałości Boga Ojca. Chrystus nie obiecuje za to żadnej nagrody, jak to miało miejsce w Starym Testamencie "abyś długo żył i aby ci się dobrze powodziło …". Jedyną nagrodą jest życie wieczne, tak przecież dla nas odległe nierealne ... Łatwo się o tym pisze i dyskutuje, łatwo poucza i daje dobre rady. Ale jak to wprowadzić do praktyki własnego życia? Jak nie osądzać pochopnie, nie wydawać wyroków, przebaczać "siedemdziesiąt siedem razy"? Jak się nie denerwować, jak nie mieć żalu, nie nosić urazy w sercu? Jak nie szukać swego i nie udowadniać swoich racji? Jak miłować KAŻDEGO bliźniego, tak jak Bóg go miłuje. Byłoby to nawet możliwe, ale ... pod pewnymi warunkami: - żeby się on zmienił, żeby przyjął mój punkt widzenia, żeby przestał mi dokuczać, żeby wykazał choć odrobinę skruchy, czy

dobrej woli, żeby ... itd., itp. ... Ale tak bezwarunkowo i równo ... bez jakichkolwiek zastrzeżeń i warunków wstępnych ... Nie! to niemożliwe, to jest przecież równoznaczne z naiwnością, wystawianiem się na ciosy i razy .... "Nie stawiajcie oporu złemu, jeśli cię kto uderzy w prawy policzek, nadstaw mu i drugi ..." Nie, to takie trudne, to niemożliwe, to jest naiwne i wbrew zdrowemu rozsądkowi ... Ale czy ja kiedyś próbowałem tak właśnie postępować. czy próbowałem nie oddawać złem za złe, ale zło dobrem zwyciężać? Radykalizm ewangeliczny, wymagania stawiane przez Mistrza są niezwykłe, a przecież nie są nierealne i niemożliwe. Tylu już przede mną spróbowało i ... pokazali, że jest to możliwe! Panie, naucz mnie, jak kochać ludzi, których tak trudno kochać ... KAZIK

ROZDZIAŁ ÓSMY: Powołania do szczególnej konsekracji 274. Jeśli wyjdziemy z przekonania, że Duch Święty nadal budzi powołania do kapłaństwa i życia zakonnego, to możemy „ponownie zarzucić sieci” w imię Pana, z całą ufnością. Możemy i musimy odważyć się, by powiedzieć każdemu młodemu człowiekowi, by zastanowił się nad możliwością pójścia tą drogą. 275. Czasami przedstawiałem tę propozycję ludziom młodym, którzy odpowiadali mi niemal kpiną: „Nie, naprawdę nie pójdę w tę stronę”. Jednak kilka lat później niektórzy z nich byli w seminarium duchownym. Pan nie może nie dotrzymać swojej obietnicy, że nie opuści Kościoła pozbawionego pasterzy, bez których nie mógłby żyć ani wypełniać swojej misji. A jeśli niektórzy księża nie dają dobrego świadectwa, to z tego powodu Pan nie przestanie powoływać. Wręcz przeciwnie, podwaja stawkę, ponieważ nie przestaje troszczyć się o swój umiłowany Kościół. 276. W rozeznawaniu powołania nie można wykluczać możliwości poświęcenia się Bogu w kapłaństwie, w życiu zakonnym lub w innych formach konsekracji. Dlaczego to wykluczać? Bądź pewien, że jeśli rozpoznasz powołanie Boże i pójdziesz za nim, to będzie to tym, co nada pełnię twojemu życiu. 277. Jezus idzie między nami, tak jak to czynił w Galilei. Przechodzi przez nasze ulice, zatrzymuje się i patrzy nam w oczy, bez pośpiechu. Jego powołanie jest pociągające i fascynujące. Ale dzisiaj niepokój i szybkość tak wielu bodźców, które nas bombardują, sprawiają, że nie ma miejsca na tę ciszę wewnętrzną, w której dostrzegamy spojrzenie Jezusa i słyszymy Jego wołanie. W międzyczasie otrzymasz wiele propozycji dobrze opakowanych, które wydają się piękne i intensywne, choć z czasem zostawią cię tylko pustym, znużonym i samotnym. Nie pozwól, aby tak ci się przydarzyło, ponieważ turbina tego świata wciąga cię w bezsensowny bieg, bez ukierunkowania, bez jasnych celów. W ten sposób zmarnuje się wiele twoich wysiłków. Lepiej szukaj tych przestrzeni spokoju i ciszy, które pozwolą ci się zastanowić, pomodlić, spojrzeć lepiej w otaczający cię świat, a wtedy wraz z Jezusem będziesz w stanie rozpoznać, jakie jest twoje powołanie na tej ziemi. ROZDZIAŁ DZIEWIĄTY: Rozeznawanie 278. Nad ogólnie rozumianym tematem rozeznawania zatrzymałem się już w Adhortacji apostolskiej Gaudete et exsultate.Pozwólcie, że teraz podejmę niektóre z tych refleksji, odnosząc je do rozeznawania własnego powołania w świecie. 279. Przypominam, że wszyscy, ale „szczególnie młodzi ludzie, są narażeni na nieustanny zapping [skakanie po kanałach]. Można poruszać się w dwóch lub trzech

przestrzeniach jednocześnie i uczestniczyć w tym samym czasie w różnych wirtualnych wydarzeniach”[152]. A rozeznawanie jest „szczególnie ważne, kiedy w naszym życiu pojawia się nowość, a zatem kiedy trzeba rozeznać, czy jest ona «nowym winem», które pochodzi od Boga, czy też zwodniczą nowością ducha tego świata lub ducha diabła”[153]. 280. To rozeznawanie, „chociaż obejmuje rozum i roztropność, to je przewyższa, bo chodzi w nim o dostrzeżenie tajemnicy jedynego i niepowtarzalnego planu, jaki Bóg ma dla każdego. [...] Stawką jest sens mojego życia wobec Ojca, który mnie zna i kocha, ten prawdziwy sens, dla którego mogę poświęcić me życie, a którego nikt nie zna lepiej niż On”[154]. 281. W tym kontekście, zawiera się kształtowanie sumienia, które pozwala, by rozeznawanie dojrzewało w swojej głębi i wierności Bogu: „Formowanie sumienia jest procesem obejmującym całe życie, w którym uczy się żywić te same uczucia jak Jezus Chrystus, przyjmując kryteria Jego wyborów i intencje Jego działania (por. Flp 2, 5)”[155] . 282. Formacja ta oznacza gotowość, by dać się przekształcać Chrystusowi, a zarazem „regularne praktykowanie dobra, sprawdzane w rachunku sumienia: chodzi w nim nie tylko o rozpoznanie grzechów, ale także dzieła Boga w naszym codziennym doświadczeniu, w wydarzeniach historii i kultur, w których żyjemy, w świadectwie wielu innych mężczyzn i kobiet, którzy nas poprzedzili lub towarzyszyli nam swoją mądrością. Wszystko to pomaga wzrastać w cnocie roztropności, wyrażając ogólny kierunek życia konkretnymi decyzjami, mając pogodną świadomość własnych darów i ograniczeń”[156].

CLOSED for SNOW/ICE there will be NO 6:30 A.M. Mass at St. Stanislaus. This is due first for safety, then for easier access for our crew to clear the parking lot, sidewalks, steps, etc. The inten-tion for the 6:30 A.M. Mass will be celebrated in the Friary Chapel that day by the Friar assigned. Then regular Confessions at 10:45 AM & Mass at Noon. Also, if School is closed or 2 hours late, the Parish Office will open at 11:00 A.M. Thank you for your cooperation.
