The basic objectives of any instrumentation system are

1.Information-gathering system: instrumentation isused to measure natural phenomena and other variables

    2. Diagnosis: Measurements are made to help in thedetection of some malfunction of the system beingmeasured.

    3. Evaluation: Measurements are used to determine theability of a system to meet its functional requirements.

    4. Monitoring: Instrumentation is used to monitor someprocess or operation in order to obtain continuous orperiodic information about the state of the system beingmeasured.

. Control: Instrumentation is sometimes used to

Subject The subject is the human being on $hom the measurements aremade.

StimulusIn many measurements& the response to some form of e'ternalstimulus isrequired. The stimulus may be visual or tactile

TransducerIn general& a transducer is de(ned as a device capable of convertingone form of energy or signal to another. In the man#instrumentsystem& each transducer is used to produce an electric signal that isan analog of the phenomenon being measured. The transducer maymeasure temperature& pressure& )o$& or any of the other variables

that can be found in the body& but its output is al$ays an electricsignal.

Signal-Conditioning Equipment The part of the instrumentation system that ampli(es& modi(es& or in

anyother $ay changes the electric output of the transducer is called

Display Equipment The electrical output of the signal#conditioning equipment must beconverted into a form that can be perceived by one of man*s sensesand that can convey the information obtained by the measurement ina meaningful $ay.

Recording, Data-Processing, and Transmission Equipment The measured information is recorded for possible later use or totransmit it from one location to another.
