The seventieth appearance of the Flower, Produce and Craft Show promises to be bigger than ever with more entries and twenty six trophies on offer. Following judging the main hall will be open for viewing from 2.00 pm. Competition is expected to be as keen as ever and hopefully the weather will enable both flowers and produce to be available in abundance. In recent years there has been a significant increase of craft entries.

The show itself will be open from 1.00 pm on the day. We have some different displays apart from a few old favourites. This year we will have a display of miniature tanks. Sweep will demonstrate his sheepdog skills with some friendly geese. There will be an appearance of various birds of prey both static and an additional flying display. New Milton

Eagles will be playing a 5 a side soccer match. Jitterbug Jive will show us all how to dance and of course a taste of the east from Angies Belly Dancers. Music will be supplied by Patrick Collins with his band Random Cow. A favourite last year and back by popular demand. We have some amazing raffle prizes this year including a Family Ticket for Beaulieu Motor Museum, East Close Hotel Restaurant voucher, Pebble Beach restaurant voucher, New Forest Show tickets, a trip around Ringwood Brewery and many more. Raffle tickets will be available in advance from any committee member or can be purchased from Bashley Stores. There will be at least 20 craft stalls, a BBQ, homemade cakes and scones plus a bar for those who want something stronger. It promises to be a real family day out for both locals and holiday makers.

Events at the Village HallMarch 7th saw an afternoon session of Bingo. Specifically arranged so that residents who do not like coming out at night could have some daytime entertainment. Bill Wallace was on hand as caller and everyone went home happy. On 1st April the hall hosted a large gathering of concerned residents to discuss the issue of excessive speed by traffic through the village. Two members of the town council were present to listen to a variety of Bashley villagers voicing their concern over the flagrant disregard for the 30 mph speed limit throughout the village. The Advertiser and Times sent a reporter to cover the event. A meeting at the town hall to present a petition to the Town Council was re arranged for Monday 8th May. The Quiz night on 22nd April was attended by around 55 people. This time hot food was served during the interval which everyone enjoyed. A raffle with generous prizes helped the hall to make a small profit which helps our overall funds. Initial proposals to develop the site on Bashley Common Road where the Saw Mill once existed were unveiled on Tuesday 25th April. Plans to build 14 homes on the ground were shown for villagers to see and comment upon. Many Bashley residents turned out to view the proposal which if passed could see around sixty new villagers living on the site.

Advertising in the Bashley Herald does payWe placed an advertisement in the last publication for a Treasurer for the Village Hall. Within 2 days we had a response and have subsequently welcomed Bob Andrews on board.

GARDENER’S CORNERCut the grass a little and often but at least once a week. Spread the cuttings over the compost heap to avoid them becoming slimy if wet. Don’t just dump them in piles.

Water hanging baskets weekly and ensure other plants don’t miss out on a drink. Greenfly and black fly in particular like the warmer weather.

Check with Paul Follet or Redcliffes for advice on the appropriate products to eradicate these pests.

If you grow plants in the greenhouse try watering the floor area first thing in the morning. This should create a humid atmosphere which plants like. But don’t do it in the evenings.

Keep the birds fed and encourage them as they will help with keeping the pests down. Make sure fruit trees etc are protected.

There is plenty to do in the garden during the Summer but if the chance presents itself just take a seat and a cuppa then sit down and enjoy.

St. John the Baptist in St. John’s Road is one of the three churches in Milton Parish, the others being St. Peter’s Ashley and the parish church of St Mary Magdalene. The smallest of the three seating around 75 people, though we would be lucky to see that many save for a wedding or funeral, there are two services each month, one Evensong and one Holy Communion (See below for times). Sadly, we no longer have a Sunday School but enjoy contact with the younger generation through the pre-school group The Busy Bees who make use of our Church Hall. For anyone with children wanting to find a Sunday School there is one at the parish Church each Sunday.

Our hall is available for hire at very reasonable rates, contact Lynne Dibble 01425 620740 for details. There is a large garden attached to the Church where we pitched the marquees for our flower festival in 2016.

At the Bashley village Day in July we will be holding a Teddy Tombola, which proved very popular in 2016. If you have any unwanted Teddies of any shape or size could we have them please? Contact Lynne as above.

St. John’s is licensed for Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals and for information concerning these contact the Parish Office on 01425 614077 or visit the website www.miltonparish.co.uk

The Holy Communion Service on June 18th takes place on our Patronal Festival after which there will be a bring and share lunch.

You are very welcome to join us.

Times of services at St. John’s are: Choral Evensong 1st Sunday of each month at 6.30pm, Holy Communion every 3rd Sunday at 11.00am.

We would love to see you there.

We hope that you enjoy the 2nd edition of the Bashley Herald which has benefitted from additional help from local graphic designer Shaun Adams of Brand Bamboo. Our aim is to provide an interesting and entertaining newsletter which residents look forward to receiving. As mentioned in our previous edition we welcome contributions from any Bashley resident who has an item they think other villagers might enjoy.

Give the hall secretary a ring on 01425 638121 or email him on davery951@btinternet .com and he will let you know of available space and timings etc.

Spring has been as busy as ever with plenty of events as well as providing meeting space for 2 gatherings which might affect the face of the village of Bashley itself. The proposed development of the Saw Mills and of course the speeding issue. On Saturday 29th April Bashley Stores celebrated its first birthday since opening the new shop. We wish Den and Carol further success as every other village must be envious of the facility.

As you will have noticed the Village Day is getting closer as further work continues in making it a day to remember. The fete is in its seventieth year and it is hoped more people than ever will enter the Flower Show and a bumper audience attend on the day itself.

A few words from our editor

My parents started their early married life in Bashley where my brother was born. They moved to Lower Ashley Road where I was born and spent my early years. Burley Villa became a riding stables in the 1960’s but prior to this it was a farm where mother’s relatives Fred and Lilly Broomfield (nee Corbin) lived. Before the war we’d often visit them at the farm walking via Cull Lane as there were no buses. We’d play Cowboys and Indians using the old coach for props. There were pigs at the farm and a few cows who provided milk. The milk churns were cooled by lowering them into the well whilst the butter was churned in the dairy. Out of bounds on the farm was a portable steam engine during the war it was used to power a saw mill near Wootton stream. Sadly it was destroyed when it caught fire. Walking home to Ashley I remember going into Brownies Stores for a penny’s worth of sweets or into Platts shop for an ice cream. At one time Bashley had more than one shop. Before my time there was a shop in Bashley Common Road where Cobblestones is situated today. Dad was the local preacher and looked after the Victoria Hall Mission Chapel where Taverners Cottage lies in Bashley Common Road. When very young I would perch on the crossbar of Dad’s bike, my brother on the back carrier and my sister doing the same on Mum’s bike. No electricity in those pre war days just paraffin lamps. I remember a blind Mrs Loader playing the harmonium whilst we sang using the Sankey Hymn Book. The actual property was owned by a Mr and Mrs Goodall who also owned the adjacent shop.

The Summer Sunday School picnic parties were held in fields along Bashley Cross Roads where we could play games and generally enjoy ourselves. The Harvest Festival was celebrated in the hall in early Autumn. Whilst just down the road on the corner of Smithy Lane Mr Loader had the blacksmiths business. Opposite Ferdene Farm shop we see today. When we grew older we attended Ashley Baptist Chapel and visits to Bashley became less. Older children were encouraged to do their bit during the war. At the ripe age of thirteen, along with 2 other lads, I was employed on Saturday mornings at Mr Baileys smallholding in Greenwood, Bashley Common Road. We grew vegetables, tomatoes and other fruits from the orchard. Water was pumped by hand from the well and along with rain water stored in header tanks for house use. I fondly recall Tom the old mule who helped till the soil. Payment was four and a half pennies per hour, pre decimal of course. I worked in New Milton having left school at the age of fourteen and did National Service in the R.A.F. so Bashley visits became very rare. On completing my service I returned to Yew Lane, Ashley until I married. In January 1958 along with my wife and baby son I moved into Greenwood and have been happy there ever since. I guess this makes me a real Bashley local! Norman Kitcher

Defibrillator You are probably already aware of the

plans to site a defibrillator at the Village Hall.

We kicked this project off and approached NMTC

for a contribution. Karen Cross has then managed

the project and it is due to be installed soon,

hopefully before you go to press.

One of our senior members was playing for

Dorset against Devon when one of the opposition

had a heart attack. His life was saved by the

prompt use of a defibrillator so we decided

that having one on site would be a good idea.

However to maximise it’s potential benefit for

the whole village we thought it would be better

if it was sited at the Village Hall.

The club has part funded the machine and

with grants from NMTC and Neil Tungate the

purchase and installation costs have been covered.

Hopefully it will never be used !!

“White Ball” CricketTraditionally cricket has always been played in “whites” with

a red ball. However in an effort to attract more youngsters

and spectators the Southern Premier League has

introduced “White Ball” cricket to the Premier League

this season.

So this means that Coloured Clothing, White Balls and

Black Sight Screens will be seen at the BCG for all home

First Team games in May and August.

There is no doubt that colour is the way to go in cricket

as all domestic One Day and T20 games are now played in

coloured clothing, but the Southern League are the first ECB

league in the country to introduce colour to the

recreational game.

he curtain has come down on the football season for

Bashley who plied their trade in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier

League this time. Having been relegated last season the aim

for this year was to prevent the embarrassment of a further relegation.

This was achieved as they finished fourteenth out of twenty two teams

in their division. Below local rivals Brockenhurst and Lymington Town

with a tally of fifty four points from forty two games.

The final day’s defeat at Horndean by 3 goals to 1 was made more

difficult to swallow when it was announced the manger Tom Prodomo

had resigned. The lure of Weymouth who play at a higher level was

too good to miss. At time of writing a replacement was still being

sought. But after a few seasons of depressing results it is hoped the

club are more stable and now have a successful under 19 team.

Players of the future no doubt.
