From the ChairmanSince our last issue, quite a lot hashappened in the village. The new streetlights have been installed, and I have tosay that I like them, despite complaintsfrom other parts of New Milton.
The Hall hosted a very successfulChristmas Craft Fair, Christmas Party, two Quiz Nights and a Live MusicConcert since last Autumn. The winnerof our poetry competition wasannounced at the Christmas Party – ourvery own postmistress Carol Sparkes! Her winning entry can be foundelsewhere in this issue.
We have a full programme of events thisyear which will be advertised locally aswell as in our newsletters, and on ourweb site at bashleyvillagehall.org.uk. Weare aiming to vary the things we do atthe hall so there should be somethingfor everyone. Efforts to organise ourVillage Day are taking shape, althoughJuly 18th seems a long way off. You willsee our requests for help and parkingspaces highlighted in this newsletter. Thisoffers everyone the chance to getinvolved in any way they can without anypressure. This year we aim to produceSummer and Autumn newsletters inaddition to this issue.
I would like to say a personal thank youto all our advertisers who help fund thenewsletter project. Please use themwhenever you can and try to supportour local businesses. No Sudoku thistime but a local crossword instead. Havefun with it and I hope you enjoy theBashley Newsletter.

Bashley’s new store – a stepcloser! In January 1902 Albert Edward Jamesopened the shop on its current site. MrJames was a draper, grocer, mealmanand tobacconist who also sold boots!Deliveries were by horse and cart andthe stable/cart shed still exists today. By1933 the Post Office closed down theoffice on Bashley Road and the local WIbecame involved. 1935 saw the PostOffice reopening and run by Mr PaulPlatt. The shop became known as Platt'sStores - a name that is still occasionallyused today. During the Second WorldWar, he was a local agent for theMinistry of Labour coordinating jobvacancies with the Southampton office.Mr Platt retired in 1964.
Several owners and some 40 years laterwe arrived at the Village Shop. We hadrun a shop in Kent but moved with ourthree children (then 7, 5 and 2) to startlife in Hampshire. In the 40 years sinceMr Platt's retirement the shop had seensome major changes. Deliveries were nolonger done by horse and cart, the frontgarden had been replaced with aforecourt, the side garden had been soldoff, a side extension to the shop wasbuilt and a complete shop refit wasundertaken.
We managed to buy back the sidegarden and our current journey began. The shop was becoming busier,

sometimes congested, especially whendeliveries were coming in and notproviding a comfortable space forpeople to talk with neighbours they metin the shop. The back area is also verylimited with space having to double up.Numerous hours were spent discussingwith shop fitters how to relay the shopand incorporate the back areas into amore useable space. There seemed noway forward with the existing space sowe spoke with the bank (who promisedsupport) and the council. The council'spreference was for a side extension withinter-connecting door to a residentialspace. The extension was designed inaccordance with the councils' wishesand we were subsequently grantedplanning permission. However, our finalapplication to the bank for funding wasnot as successful. Despite previousassurances, commercial funding was notavailable because the property (beinghome and business combined) had toomuch residential space. We went backto the council. Fortunately, due to thehuge amount of support our previousapplication had received, the council sawthat an improved shop was needed andplanning was granted.
Where are we now?
The finances are currently being dealtwith and the previous issues should notarise as the new shop is a separatebuilding. The new shop will be largerand have more windows so should bemuch brighter inside. We will havespace to increase the ranges we do andalso to include a 'meet and greet' areafor you to sit and chat with others youmay 'bump into'. We have hadconfirmation from the Post Office thatwe will be allowed to carry on as weare, from a secure area and all theservices we currently offer will continuein the new shop.
We hope to have the new shop tradingby the end of the year but are alsoaware that things don't always goaccording to plan!
Please come and talk with us and let usknow what you would like to see in thenew shop. We are aware that withoutyou the shop would not exist and wehope that the changes we are makingand your ongoing support will allow theshop to continue, in the same wayprevious owners' changes allowed theshop to continue.

Paris with a differenceLast November, a French friend told methat he would be holding a live countrymusic event on a barge moored on theSeine in Paris. This was a good reason tomake an unscheduled trip to Paris, whichI hadn't visited for several years.
Getting there couldn't be easier. A halfhour drive to Southampton Airportbefore dawn on a Saturday morning, followed by a short flight in a FlyBeturbo-prop aircraft had me at OrlyAirport at half past nine on a greySaturday morning. A quick bus ride intoParis (€7.50 one way) dropped me atDenfert-Rochereau, from where theMetro will take you anywhere youchoose. Or you could walk as I did, andby about 10 o'clock I was sitting in alovely old café (Au Petit Suisse justoutside the Jardin du Luxembourg)drinking coffee and nibbling a croissant.
I had booked a reasonably priced hotelby the Gare d'Austerlitz, which was veryhandy for the Seine and the Metrostation. I planned to visit a few quirkyplaces that intrigued me. Here are a fewideas for a less traditional visit to Paris.
The Quai de Valmy runs alongside asection of canal, not far from the Garede l'Est. This is a lovely road to walk, trees shade the canal and there are anumber of interesting shops to visit. Itwass lovely just browsing, and therestricted baggage allowance helped tostop me buying too many trinkets!
An interesting lunch consisted of aYiddish sandwich from Sacha Finkelsztajnat 27 rue des Rosiers, a delicatessen thathas been in business continuously since1946. The shop is a step back in time;you place your order and pay a cashier, whilst it is prepared by the counter staff. The establishment is worth a visit, evenif you don't buy anything.
The Notre Dame cathedral is alwaysworth a visit. But the view of the rear ofthe building is probably far superior tothat of the front. Cross the Pont del'Archevêché, which has thousands of
padlocks attached to the railings, for thatspectacular view. Continue around thenorth of the cathedral into RueChanoinesse, where you will findBertie's Cupcakery. There is room for 2or 3 customers at most, but one of theirdelightful cakes with a coffee makes awonderful pit stop.
Finally, if you are a music lover thenhead up to La Chope des Puces at 122rue Rosiers, Saint Ouen where you willfind authentic jazz manouche everySaturday and Sunday from 2pm to 7pm.The bar is very near to the Marché auxPuces, the flea and antique market that isa Sunday-afternoon must for visitors.
And that concert? A very pleasantSunday afternoon in good company, withsome food and great music. Highlyrecommended!

In2011/12 we initially extended and thencompletely refitted the clubhouse toprovide three changing rooms withshowers, new toilets, a new kitchen andbar and an extended balcony. Lastautumn we obtained funding from theOlympic Legacy fund and commencedmajor ground works to the playing fields. We welcome new players (senior andjunior) of all abilities, social membersand of course spectators.
On the main pitch we have levelled theentire outfield and installed a newsquare to improve the wicket. Inaddition we have extended the nurseryground at the back into the car parkingarea to provide for a much larger playingfield. We have incorporated a newsquare to provide for grass wicketsalongside the original artificial strip. Weare still seeking funding to provide for anew pavilion for the nursery ground intime for the start of the 2015 seasonand still have a car park for players andspectators, but with a reduced capacity.
On the playing side, in 2015 Bashley willfield 5 adult senior sides. The first teamcompetes at the very highestrecreational level in the elite ECBSouthern Premier League.
In addition we will provide junior cricketfor all age groups from under 9 through
to under 17 including girls. Bashley has asuccessful U14 girls team - the BashleyBandits. The old composter writesI'm just stirring from my Winterhibernation and looking forward toanother successful growing season.
Now's the time to attend to your seedpotatoes. They must be allowed tosprout which is called "chitting". Placethe tubers in a light frost free place.Something like a conservatory will be anideal spot. The chitting takes about 6weeks. The sprouts should be allowedto grow to about 1" (2cm) in lengthbefore the tubers are planted. Nothinglike growing your own, they taste somuch better.
Get your pruners out now and attend tothose roses. Happy gardening.

The historic Rising Sun
The New Forest is a uniqueenvironment; its boundaries enclose 145square miles of some of the mostbeautiful countryside anywhere in theworld. Originally established as a RoyalForest by William the Conqueror morethan 900 years ago, mainly as a preservefor deer, few other places combine soremarkable a history with such animmense diversity of landscapes. Thereare ancient woodlands, open foreshores, heath land and bogs, an intricatenetwork of rivers that wind their way tothe sea.
In the past, this part of the New Forestwas very isolated and the sight of theInn that has always stood here musthave been a very welcome sight to thosecrossing the wild and lonely forestmoors. Over the centuries travellers, merchants, foresters, Lords and theirLadies hunting in the Royal preserve, and even highway men and smugglersfor which this area was renowned, would have stopped for a drink or a biteto eat. It is believed that for many yearsthe French brandy that was sold herewas supplied by the smugglers or"Gentlemen of the night" as they wereknown. When a nearby cottage wasdemolished a smugglers hoard of Frenchgold coins was found in the roof space.
There has been an Inn on this site in theNew Forest for well over two hundredyears. The Inn was rebuilt in theVictorian era but fell upon hard times. Now tastefully restored while retainingits olde world character, it is once againa welcoming place for those travelling inthis beautiful part of the New Forest. The pub is refurbished to a very highstandard retaining many original featuressuch as the stained glass windows anddoors. Inside there is a Victorian barwith a feature open fireplace where youcan enjoy traditional cask ale, fine winesand spirits, all now legally acquired!
