"BARNEYS THE MOVIE

l OPENS (PRE-TITLE)

Following Studio/Distributor information, we fade to a FULL SCREEN Of BLUE. In ANIMATED colorful KID CRAYON, we see a DOOR "drawn" mid-screen. We hear a (SFXs JAUNTY KNOCK ON DOOR) just before FULL-SIZED BARNEY opens the door and leans in.

BARNEY Oh good- you're here I

Barney comes skipping in; as he closes the door, it transforms into (VFX/SFXs GLITTERING SPARKLES) which disappear as they fall like sand. Barney turns and speaks directly to audience- moving his body and gaze from side-to-side as he "works the room".

BARNEY Hi everybody1 And welcome to my very first movie1 It's full of fun and songs and surprises and... (a beat) Ohl (Chuckles) I guess I should let you see for yourself! (a beat) Now it's a g-r-e-a-t big story... (continues)

Barney emphasizes "great big" by spreading his arms and rotating on one foot.

BARNEY (Continuing)

...so before we sfeart, get nice and comfortable. Scootch back in your seat...c'mon...

Barney takes a step back

BARNEY (Continuing)

...now everybody wiggle around, just to get it out of your system! C’mon, wiggle...

Suddenly, the entire movie screen appears to (VFX: SHAKE) causing Barney to jiggle around the screen humorously (SFXs HUMOR ACCENT).

BARNEY Whoa-OHI N-nice wiggling!

The shaking stops, and the picture rights itself. Barney wobbles a bit as he gets his sea legs back.

BARNEY (Chuckles)

And that reminds me of something very Important I have to tell you! (Magical fun) Sometimes the things that YOU do ...like all that wiggling...will make things happen up herel So I may ask you to help me from time to time...okay?

The picture (VFX: Nods up and down), causing Barney to flap his arms a bit to hold his balance.

BARNEY Whoa! Okay! (a beat) Now, the very first thing I’d like you to do is use your imagination... (continues)

Barney cups his hands, then tosses (VFX/SFX: MAGICAL GLITTER) upwards. The shot follows the GLITTER as it flies upward, dropping Barney from the bottom of frame. The screen makes a smooth transition from BLUE to DEEP BLUE to BLACK as the GLITTER becomes a STAR FIELD.

BARNEY (VO) (Magical)

Imagine the most beautiful stars you've ever seen, shining and twinkling in the sky far, far away from Earth. Because believe it or not, part of our story begins wa-a-a-y up there...!

We see a childishly fanciful view of outer space, with COLORFUL PLANETS, some with RINGS, the occasional COMET, etc. Stars twinkle nicely (even though they wouldn’t in "real" space). A bright spot appears in the distance, and quickly grows as it approaches the camera. We now see that it is a football-sized EGG with muted COLORED STRIPES slowly tumbling end over end as it rockets through space. It passes the camera with a (SFX: SWISHHhhhhhl).

BARNEY (VO) Do you see that round thing?

The camera turns to watch it pass...and the egg continues on its way- apparently heading towards a STAR with some PLANETS visible. It still has a long way to go.

BARNEY (Chuckles)

We'll be seeing it again in just a little while. (a beat) But first, let’s get back down to Earth... (continues)

si DISSOLVE TOs

NT. SCHOOL CLASSROOM - DAY.

BARNEY (VO) (Continuing)

Because the rest of our story begins right here...on the very last day of school!

We are inside the elementary school classroom seen on "Barney & Friends" TV series. The classroom is filled with multi-ethnic children,, including KENNETH and JUAN from the PBS show. Everyone is excitedly listening to the TEACHER.

TEACHER (already speaking)

...we've had a wonderful year of school together, and I'm glad I had each and every one of you in my class. You are all very special. (A beat) So, I hope you have a wonderful Summer vacation and...

BARNEY: The Movie Final Draft Inst revised: April 22, 1995 4

She is interrupted by a (SFX: RINGING SCHOOL BELL) which prompts a cheer from her students. We hear more cheers down the hall, and the beginnings of a mass exodus.

TEACHER ...and it's time to go!

The class erupts in happy chaos as the kids get up to leave. Many come to give the teacher a final hug.

TEACHER Have fun everyone!

CHOOL PLAYGROUND - DAY.

(ad-libs)

Kids are streaming out the schoolhouse doors, leaving with PARENTS, riding BIKES, etc.. Kenneth and Juan are now in the company of (from PBS) MIN, JULIE, CARLOS, KATHY, JASON and DEREK.

Our kids go to the playground PLAY PLATFORM, which is already occupied by TOSHA and SHAWN. Tosha is carefully writing a LETTER in her open NOTEBOOK. Shawn is playing with something concealed inside a CARDBOARD BOX, which is distinctively marked with kid-written messages like "HANDLE WITH CARE", "THIS END UP" etc.

MIN Hi, Shawn- Tosha!

TOSHA Oh- hi everybody!

OTHERS (ad-lib brief greetings)

Tosha continues writing as other kids climb or lounge on the equipment.

KATHY What’s in the box, Shawn?

SHAWN It’S not really what's in the box, Kathy- it's who's in the box...

Shawn reaches into the box, then lifts out the BARNEY PLUSH.

OTHERS (except Tosha)

Barney!

Shawn bounces the doll as if it were speaking.

SHAWN ("Barney" voice)

Hi there, everybody1

MIN What are you doing in there, Barney?

SHAWN (His own voice)

That's a surprise! Why don't you ask Tosha?

A happy Tosha looks up from her work.

TOSHA Well, we're all starting our Summer Vacations... so I thought that Barney should have a Summer Vacation, too!

OTHERS (ad-lib agreement)

JASON (Joking)

Wow- a Summer Vacation inside a box!

CARLOS That doesn't sound like much fun!

OTHERS (Scoff nicely at this idea)

TOSHA Barney's not staying in the box. I’m just sending him to my cousin Marcella, so she can take Barney on her vacation trip.

DEREK Where is Marcella going?

SHAWN She's going to visit a real farm with her best friend1

The kids are favorably impressed by this. Tosha hands over her HAND-WRITTEN LETTER and a 5x7 SCHOOL PICTURE OF HERSELF (TOSHA) which Shawn packs in the box along with the Barney Plush.

JULIE But...does anything exciting happen on a farm?

Tosha gazes happily at the closed box with MARCELLA'S NAME written on it.

TOSHA (Mischievous)

Oh, it will when Barney gets there...l

Close up of the box, which (VFXs TRANSITIONS SEAMLESSLY) to next shot.

With singing audible (see below), we open on MATCHING SHOT of box, then pull back to REVEAL that it is now part of a PILE OF LUGGAGE stacked high in a MINIVAN. As the shot widens, we hear and see our characters (the camera is, roughly, looking through the windshield and into the van's interior).

Inside the van, we meet THE NEWTON FAMILY- most of whom are happily singing. Spirits are high, but clothing is rumpled from the long car trip.

The driver is DAVID (DAD) NEWTON, a pleasantly average looking 35+ Caucasian. He wears a happily goofy Hawaiian shirt. His wife CHRISTINE (MOM) NEWTON; 35+, also sits up front, dressed casually. She is attractive in a natural way- neither using nor needing much makeup.

In the center row of seats, we see CODY NEWTON, age 9. He is nice looking in a down-to-earth "all boy" way. Cody isn't singing with the others- he appears to be mildly unhappy about even being in the car. He watches the scenery roll by while he absently toys with a FOOTBALL in his hands• Next to him, safely strapped into a BABY SEAT, is Cody's baby brother "FIG" NEWTON, an adorable 12-month old boy. The baby is tickled by the family singalong.

In the third row of seats (just in front of the LUGGAGE and BOXES stored in the van's rear) we see ABBY NEWTON, a perky looking 7 year old girl, and her best friend MARCELLA WALKER, 7 years old and Black. The girls are having a great time.

(SONG: "GRANDPA'S FARM"/JOINED IN PROGRESS)

ALL EXCEPT CODY (Sung a capella)

Down on Grandpa's farm

MARCELLA There is a little white duck

ALL EXCEPT CODY Down on Grandpa's farm

ABBY There is a little white duck

ALL EXCEPT CODY The duck, he makes a sound like this-

Abby leans up to sing to the baby.

ABBY Quack! Quack!

ALL EXCEPT CODY The duck, he makes a sound like this-

This time, Marcella leans up to sing in Cody's ear. She's teasing...he is wearily patient.

MARCELLA QUACK! QUACK!

Cody remains cool, but taps the football a bit more restlessly.

ALL EXCEPT CODY Oh, We're on our way. We’re on our way,. On our way to Grandpa's farm. We’re on our way, We're on our way (end of song) On our way to Grandpa’s farm! (Cheering for themselves) Yayyyy!!!

As everyone else applauds the singing, Cody rolls his eyes, cynical about such corniness.

CODY OHhhh, what, next.?

(MUSIC: Segues smoothly into Opening Credit Theme)

OPENING CREDITS (MUSIC: "MOVIE THEME")

Throughout the credit sequence, we cut between shots of the Minivan's interior (and the action within), and exterior shots of the Minivan and interesting scenery (over which CREDITS are displayed). THEME MUSIC plays under throughout.

We see scenery, traveling, and some credits. Then return to van interior. Cody looks restless.

MARCELLA (For umpteenth time)

Are we there yet?

The parents share a wry smile.

MOM (Wry, to Dad)

Your turn.

DAD Not yet, Marcella!

Cut to more scenery, traveling, and credits. Then return to van interior.

ABBY Are we there yet?

DAD (Wry, to Mom)

Your turn.

MOM Not yet, Abby!

CODY (Cynical, to Abby)

What's your hurry? We're gonna be stuck at that farm for a whole week.

MOM (Patient)

"Stuck"? Cody Newton, that’s no way to talk about your grandparents' farm.

CODY But there's nothing to do there! (With feeling) They don't even have a TV1

DAD Aw, c'mon- there's lots of fun stuff to do! You can help Grandpa with all kinds of farm chores like, uh... (a beat) milking the chickens...

KIDS (Laugh; even Cody is amused)

CUT to more exterior traveling shots, scenery, and credits. Then return to van interior. Cody is showing his football to baby Fig, who seems fascinated.

MARCELLA (Gentle teasing)

I've got an idea, Cody. At the farm, you can teach Fig how to play football!

FIG (Humorous reaction)

CODY (Unamused)

My baby brother? I don’t think so...

ABBY (Sincere, to Marcella)

Well, Cody would be a good teacher, when he plays football, his friends call him "Mister Butterfingers"!

Marcella smirks. Cody looks wounded.

CODY (Pained)

Abby, "Butterfingers" means sometimes I drop the ball...

The car hits a small bump...and Cody drops the football. Marcella fails to stifle a laugh as Cody retrieves it.

ABBY Like that?

CODY Yeah- like that.

DAD Cody, you kids will only be at the farm today and tomorrow before Mom and I get back from the teacher's

. convention. After that, you and I can practice throwing- and catching- the football. Okay?

CODY Okay. Thanks, Dad.

MARCELLA Are we almost there?

MOM & DAD (Unison, to other)

Your turn!

CUT to exterior shots, more scenery and traveling, and finish opening credits. THEME MUSIC OUT.

ABBY I'm bored...

MOM Do you want to look for out-of- state license plates?

KIDS (Bored Unison)

Did it.

MOM Count telephone poles?

KIDS Did it.

MOM Well...? (Has idea) Marcella, why don't you open that box from your cousin?

MARCELLA Oh yeah!

Marcella retrieves the box from behind her seat, opens the top and looks inside.

ABBY (Eager)

What's inside?

Marcella removes the PHOTO OF TOSHA and the LETTER as she speaks.

MARCELLA Let's see...there's a picture of Cousin Tosha...

She holds up the picture for others to see.

MARCELLA See? And there's a letter... and... (a beat) Hey...i

ABBY What is it?

MARCELLA It's a dinosaur1

CODY Cool! I love dinosaurs and... (Disappointment) AW-w-w...

Abby lifts the BARNEY PLUSH out of the box, giving us a good look at it.

CODY (VO) That's not a dinosaur...it's a doll!

As Marcella looks at her letter, Cody takes the Barney plush, nicely, and pretends to threaten Fig with it.

CODY Grr! Grr! See- it doesn't even scare Fig!

Fig looks at Barney with curiosity. Then cut to Fig's POV of Barney...

MARCELLA (VO) Cousin Tosha says that the dinosaur's name is..."Barney".

Just as his name is spoken, there is a (VFX: MAGICAL SPARKLE) in the doll’s eye. Only Fig sees this— but he reacts with giggling hand-clapping glee! others react with wry puzzlement.

DAD I think he likes BarneyI

Cody passes the Barney Plush back to Abby, as Marcella reads aloud.

MARCELLA (Reading)

Dear Marcella, This is my friend "Barney". He can talk, and sing, and dance, and play games.

DAD (As TV announcer)

Batteries not included1

MARCELLA (Reading)

For a big surprise, just use your imagination. Love, Cousin Tosha.

Cody passes the plush back to the girls with mild disdain.

CODY Use your imagination? Come on- that’s kid stuff.

gXT. MERRIVALE TOWN SQUARE - DAY.

We now see the van as it drives down the MAIN STREET of the MERRIVALE TOWN SQUARE. It is a quaint, inviting street- very "Heartland, USA". There are various PEOPLE OF VARYING ETHNICITIES hanging BANNERS and DECORATIONS. The van passes under a large colorful BANNER which says:

Merrivale FOUNDER’S DAY CELEBRATION

This Saturday1

Parade * Baking Contest * Fireworks

CUT to interior of van. Marcella is playing with the Barney Plush- holding it to the window to "look out".

ABBY Hey- that's tomorrow! Can Grandma and Grandpa bring us?

MOM (Letting down easy)

Well...maybe. But don't count on it, okay?

DAD Who knows- maybe we can get back in time for the fireworks!

CODY (Weary acceptance)

I bet we miss all the excitement...

The van continues to roll down the road.

we see the approaching minivan on a small country road. It nears the camera, then turns into a driveway and under a brightly painted WOODEN ARCH SIGN which says GREENFIELD FARM.

DAD (VO) We're here! Welcome to Greenfield Farm!

MARCELLA (VO) Wow-w-w-wl

Crane up and widen to reveal establishing shot of the farm itself. There is a beautiful VICTORIAN FARMHOUSE and a large RED BARN with some ANIMAL PENS nearby. There is at least one large FIELD OF CORN visible. All of this is set in a beautifully wooded countryside with impressive hills.

EXT. GREENFIELD FARM - DAY.

CUT to GRANDPA GREENFIELD, a 60+ farmer in weathered denim overalls. He appears to be stalking something in his CORN FIELD. He holds a large RUBBER BULB HORN. Suddenly, he gives it several loud (SFX: HONKS), causing a flurry of CROWS to fly from the corn, much to Grandpa's satisfaction.

Written by Stephen White / 01995 The Lyons Group

Page 15: Barney: The Movie - Internet Archive

BARNEY: The Movie Final Draft Last revised: April 22, 1995 14

GRANDPA Ha! That oughta teach those crows!

He gives a small victory (SFX: HONK), then hears a surprising "echo" (SFX: MINIVAN HORN TOOTS).

GRANDPA Huh?

He briefly examines his horn, then figures out what's happening.

GRANDPA Why- it's the kids!

Grandpa gleefully hustles out of the corn, and makes his way to the nearby FARMHOUSE. On the front porch, RALPH the FARM DOG, a large agreeable mutt, is barking a happy alert. Grandpa mounts the porch steps and calls through the SCREEN DOOR.

GRANDPA (Calling into house)

Eliza! The kids are here! Shake a leg now!

After a beat, GRANDMA GREENFIELD comes bustling out the screen door in happy disarray. She is 60+ and is wearing a flour-dusted COUNTRY PRINT COOKING APRON. There is a dab of flour on her nose. She is wearing a MATCHING PRINT OVEN mitt on one hand.

GRANDMA Oh my goodness! Do I look alright?

GRANDPA Beautiful, as always. Got a little dab of flour on your nose though...

Grandma wipes at her nose with the oven mitt, putting even MORE flour on.

GRANDMA Is that better?

GRANDPA Much better- c'mon now!

CUT back to interior of van. Grandma and Grandpa are visible through the windows, waving a happy welcome.

ABBY Look! There’s Grandma and Grandpa!

MARCELLA This is great 1

INT. CODY'S BEDROOM - DAY.

An abrupt CUT takes us to a stark scene.

CODY (To self)

This is not great.

We see Cody, assessing his assigned second-floor bedroom. He tosses his duffel and football onto the BED without enthusiasm. The room, while pleasant enough, is devoid of anything fun. Walls, of muted color, are unadorned except for an old PENDULUM CLOCK which (SFX: TICK-TOCKS with exaggerated slowness), underscoring the starkness of the situation. Cody scans the room, sighs, then heads toward the open window to see if there is, at least, a view.

CODY (Imitating Parents)

"You don't need TV on the farm, Cody. You have scenery to look atl"

From CODY'S POV we look down on...a PIG PEN. A PIG, wallowing in the mud, looks up at Camera/Cody and snorts a derisive (SFXs MOIST RASPBERRY).

CODY Nice scenery. (a beat) Okay. Here I am. It’s Summer Vacation and I’ve got no one to talk to, no one to play with, and absolutely nothing to do.

He stands with his back to the bed.

CODY Wait! I know! I can stare at the ceiling for a week! UHhhh....

He spreads his arms and allows himself to flop dramatically backwards onto the bed. He lays there unmoving for a few moments, staring upwards.

CODY (Wry)

Oh yeah. Now I'm having fun.

I

INT. SECOND FLOOR HALL/CODY'S BEDROOM - LATE AFTERNOON.

(Note: The second floor hallway is a central area. We can see the TOP OF THE STAIRS from the first floor, a SECOND SET OF STAIRS leading to the attic, and TWO BEDROOM DOORS- one for Cody, one shared by the girls).

The door to the girls’ bedroom slowly opens. Abby and Marcella, holding Barney Plush, come creeping furtively towards Cody’s door. They are suppressing giggles. They peek around the open door and see Cody, still lying flat on the bed. He is listlessly tossing his football straight up, then catching it.

Marcella places Barney Plush on the floor in the center of the doorway, facing Cody. The girls crouch out of sight on either side of the door.

ABBY (Funny voice- NOT Barney-ish)

COoooo-dy. Oh, COoooody1

Cody neither looks or breaks his catching rhythm.

CODY (Flat)

What?

ABBY (Funny voice)

It's me- Barney1 Won't you come and play with me?

No. CODY

ABBY (Funny voice)

We can use our imaginations 1

CODY Great. Why don't you imagine that I'm playing with you.

Giving up, the girls stand visibly in the doorway, CODY'S POV. Abby looks slightly hurt.

ABBY Well okay, Mr. Grouchy.

MARCELLA See you later...

The girls disappear from the doorway. But then Marcella pokes her head back into view long enough to say...

MARCELLA (Impish)

...Butterfingers 1

Taken by surprise, Cody fails to catch the descending football- which bounces off his face with a resounding (SFX: SPLAT)! Now he's riled...but smiling.

CODY Butterfingers, huh?!

Cody darts off the bed and shoots through the door, scooping up the Barney Plush as he goes! The girls shriek in delighted surprise!

CODY C'mon, Barney- let's play "keep- away"!

A mad chase ensues as the girls pursue Cody. IMPORTANT: all three kids are having a good time with this!

Cody bobs and weaves, keeping Barney away from the laughing girls. He dives past them into the girls' bedroom. The girls follow, seconds behind. But...

I NT. GIRLS BEDROOM - LATE AFTERNOON.

(Note: This bedroom used to belong to "Mom". It still contains TOYS and MEMENTOS appropriate from girlhood to High School. it's much more inviting than Cody's room.)

The girls come running into the bedroom...but it seems to be empty!

ABBY He's gone!

MARCELLA How'd he do that?

Puzzled, they start to explore the room. When .they are safely distant, Cody suddenly bursts out from under the bed, and dives out the door!

INT. SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY - LATE AFTERNOON.

Cody comes running into view out of the girls' room. He scurries under the ATTIC STAIRS to hide. The girls come running after.

MARCELLA Now where is he?

ABBY The attic1

The girls run up the attic stairs and out of view. Cody climbs out and runs around the hallway, looking for a new hiding place.

MARCELLA (VO) I don’t think he's up here!

ABBY (VO) Let's go back down!

Cody has to think quick1 He smiles when he sees the BATHROOM DOOR, and runs for it- just as the girls come into view.

ABBY There he goes!

INT. BATHROOM. DAY - LATE AFTERNOON.

Cody comes running into a clean, old-fashioned bathroom. He puts the Barney Plush inside the LARGE ENAMELED BATHTUB WITH FEET. The bathtub also sports a SHOWER HEAD ASSEMBLY. Cody quickly pulls the TRANSLUCENT PLASTIC SHOWER CURTAIN across the tub to hide Barney. He then turns around and puts on an innocent face, just as the girls run breathlessly in.

MARCELLA Caught you!

CODY (All innocence)

Were you chasing me?

ABBY Yes. Now can we have Barney back?

CODY Barney? Do I know a...Barney?

ABBY Co-deeeel Where is he?

CODY (Slightly snotty)

I don't know, Ab-i-gail. Why don't you "use your imagination"?

Abby and Marcella are getting annoyed.

ABBY Okay, I will!

MARCELLA Me too!

The girls furrow their brows slightly, eyes closed, as they "use their imaginations". Cody finds this amusing.

CODY No Barney? Maybe you should use more imagination!

Abby opens one eye long enough to give her brother a dirty look, then both girls redouble their efforts- eyes tightly shut, faces humorously scrunched.

From the GIRLS POV, we see Cody laughing. But behind him, (VFX/SFXs MAGICAL SPARKLES) are beginning to flit around the outlines of the tub and shower curtain! Through the murky curtain, we can see an INDISTINCT PURPLE SHAPE growing...and growing1

We see a CLOSE UP of the bathtub's legs...as they VISIBLY BEND under immense weight1 (VFX: SPARKLES)

We return to the GIRLS’ POV. A VERY LARGE PURPLE SHAPE is now behind the curtain, and as the last of the (VFX/SFX: SPARKLES disappear) we suddenly hear (SFXs SHOWER).

BARNEY (VO) Dum dee DUM, dee doo doo dum...

As soon as they hear the shower, all three kids react with surprise. The girls open their eyes, slack-jawed. Cody slowly turns around to look. (SFX: SHOWER TURNS OFF, LAST WATER GURGLES DOWN DRAIN. DRIPS under).

There is no sound or movement from THE SHAPE. A pregnant moment ticks by, and Cody s-l-o-w-l-y starts to reach for the curtain’s edge.

Suddenly, a purple hand pulls back the curtain1 We see BIG BARNEY, still with some drops of water on him.

BARNEY (Jolly)

Towel, please1

At this pedestrian request, the two girls smile...then begin to laugh. Cody remains stunned- his hand still outstretched. Marcella grabs a BATH TOWEL and hands it to Barney.

MARCELLA Here's a towel, BarneyI

BARNEY Thank you, MarcellaI

As Barney buffs himself dry with the towel, he says...

BARNEY Oh, and thank you, CodyI It's so nice to have a shower after a long car trip.

CODY (Dazed)

Uh-huh.

Barney starts to climb from the tub. CLOSE-UP of tub legs as they flex back up to normal position. Barney notices that Cody is still standing with his arm outstretched...and nicely drapes the moist towel over it.

BARNEY Oh- here you go. Thank you I

The girls couldn’t look happier...even a bit smug. Barney takes the girls by their hands, and walks out of the bathroom. His feet make (SFX: HEAVY THOOMPS) on the wooden floors, we see all of this past the still-frozen Cody.

BARNEY Now, what were we playing before, Abby?

ABBY we were playing make-believe, remember?

BARNEY Oh yes- I just love playing make- believe!

MARCELLA Hey, why don't we go play in the attic?

Cody finally starts to thaw- but he's still dazed. (SFX: LAST DRIPS FROM SHOWER)

CODY (Flat) A dinosaur, (disbelief) A dinosaur? (It hits!) A dinosaur!

Cody snaps to life! He becomes aware of the moist towel, and tosses it aside as he goes running out of the bathroom.

- LATE AFTERNOON.

we see Abby, Marcella and Barney jabbering like old friends as Abby shows them the ATTIC. It's a very large space, filled with INTERESTING KNICK-KNACKS and BRIC-A- BRAC. There are high ceilings with EXPOSED RAFTERS and BEAMS. Light streams in through a number of ROUND ORNAMENTAL WINDOWS. All in all, a colorful and inviting fantasy land for kids. Barney's feet continue to (SFX: THOOMP!) with each step.

BARNEY Wow! What a tee-riffic attic! You can make believe it’s a castle, or a clubhouse, or almost anything!

MARCELLA And there's so much stuff to play with!

Marcella sets an old ROCKING HORSE in motion.

ABBY That's my Mom’s old rocking horse...

More than anything? Oh, this will be a fun vacation1

We hear (SFX: AFFROACHING STAIRSTEPS) and Cody suddenly bursts from the top of the stairs.

CODY Hey!

Everyone turns and looks at him.

CODY (Accusingly)

You're a dinosaur!

BARNEY Yes, I know!

CODY But...but you can't be a dinosaur!

BARNEY I can't?

MARCELLA (Amused)

Why not?

CODY Look, I saw "Jurassic Park" three timesl (A beat) Dinosaurs are big and mean...and they eat people!

(SONG: "IMAGINATION" / ORIGINAL - APPROX 2:00)

This song should be uptempo and fun, covering ground similar to the "Just Imagine" song from NBC Special. We need to establish that Imagination can allow anyone to do almost anything...and go almost anywhere. The song can also touch on who Barney is- someone who loves to be with children, and to share the fun of their imaginations. Also, to help explain the Barney "mythos", we might suggest that imagination works in some surprising ways when Barney is around. Note that song should have lots of visual imagery- and ways to augment this with props in the attic. Also, the emphasis should be on simple pretend play...but we should also see just a hint of "Barney Magic". Nothing spectacular yet, though.

In true "movie-musical" style, the other characters can sing along with Barney where appropriate (probably only the girls, for now).

Throughout the song, the girls happily play along with Barney. Cody is occasionally pulled into the moment- but he’s still attempting to shake off this fantasy. Also, song should help display Cody's pragmatic "no imagination" frame of mind.

As the song ends, Barney is in the center of a humorous tableau with the girls. Cody, feeling odd-man-out, is resentful.

CODY I’m still not buying this...

ABBY C'mon Cody- it's fun to use imaginationi

CODY I don't need imagination! I’ve got TVi Well... at home anyway.

Barney and the girls give a little look of surprise at this proclamation.

CODY So listen, "Barney"...if you’re only here because of our imagination...you’re about to disappear!

Cody scrunches his eyes tightly shut.

CODY (Deliberate)

I...do...not...believe in you!

Cody slowly opens his eyes. From Cody's POV, we see Marcella and Abby looking at him with faint annoyance. Barney is noticeably absent between them. Cody smiles with relief and sighs...then is suddenly startled when Barney leans into frame and puts a hand on Cody's shoulder1 The two are practically nose to nose.

BARNEY (Warm & Significant)

That's okay, Cody. (a beat) I believe in you...

(MUSIC: MAGICAL 3-NOTE "I LOVE YOU" REFERENCE)

Cody is too shocked to speak as Barney rejoins the girls for more play.

BARNEY Dum dee DUM dee dum...

Finally, Cody finds his voice.

CODY (A bit too casual)

Excuse me. I’ll be right back.

HALL/STAIRWAY/LIVING ROOM - LATE AFTERNOON.

(Note: In this central area, we can see the KITCHEN DOOR, a STAIRCASE leading to the second floor, and a large space which opens onto the homey LIVING ROOM. The Living room includes a cozy looking fireplace with mantel, and an antique clock.)

Grandpa sits in his BATTERED RECLINER, feet up, reading a copy of "Fields & More Fields" MAGAZINE. The squeeze horn sits nearby. Ralph the dog snoozes by his side. CODY (Wounded)

But...what about the dinosaur?

GRANDPA Does he need a diaper changed?

CODY NO... 1

GRANDPA That’s a relief! Well, tell this dinosaur...uh, "Barney"...he can stay if he promises to keep out of the way.

Exasperated, Cody charges back upstairs. Ralph the dog follows behind. Grandpa chuckles as he watches Cody go.

GRANDPA (To self, chuckling)

The games these kids play! Wonder what he'll imagine next?

INT. ATTIC - LATE AFTERNOON.

Cody, shaking his head, trudges to the attic. As he opens the attic door, he is surprised to see Barney and the two girls singing and acting out a silly song (performance should be very physical and silly). The girls wear OLD DRESS-UP CLOTHES from a nearby OPEN TRUNK. Barney is holding a PAIR OF TENNIS RACQUETS to his head, as if they were giant ears. Cody watches in queasy disbelief. Ralph wags his tail.

Suddenly, everyone's attention is drawn to an overhead rafter behind and very near Cody. We hear (SFX: BJ's SIGNATURE WHISTLE and MAGICAL SPARKLES) and see (VFX: COLORED SPARKLES FORM OUTLINE WHICH RESOLVES INTO BJ). BJ, a spunky yellow dinosaur with baseball cap and tennis shoes, sits atop the rafter, happily kicking his legs.

BABY BOP (Giggling)

GIRLS (Laugh happily)

Baby Bop continues to play in the clothing as Barney makes introductions. He uses his cane as a pointer.

LIVING ROOM - EARLY EVENING.

We cut directly to a mid-shot of Grandpa, back in his easy chair, as he receives a questionable looking SLICE OF PIE from Grandma.

GRANDPA (Pained but polite)

Mmm...thank you. (Stalling) what did you say this pie was again?

GRANDMA (VO) It’s "Spaghetti and Peach"l I know it's a little...different...but if I’m going to win that baking contest tomorrow, I need to use some imagination1

CLOSE-UP of steaming slice of pie as Grandpa tentatively gets a forkful. Between the top and bottom crust, we see large slices of PEACH suspended in a tangle of SPAGHETTI. A bit of sauce leaks unappealingly onto the dish.

GRANDPA Oh, you're doing that, alright...

with trembling hand, Grandpa lifts the fork to his open mouth as Grandma watches expectantly. But suddenly...

CODY (VO) Grandma! Grandpa!

Cody comes tumbling down the stairs again, this time with the two girls (still wearing dress-up clothes).

As the egg skims almost parallel to the ground, it slaps the tops of a series of PINE TREES, each bending to absorb some of the speed, each gentle impact making little BURSTS OF MAGIC SPARKLES.

EXT. BARNYARD. NIGHT

Having lost most of its speed, we now see the gently- glowing egg strike the earth rather gently, but with enough momentum to keep rolling across the BARNYARD. It rolls until it reaches a WATER TROUGH & HAND-PUMP near the barn. The egg barely taps the trough...causing a WOODEN BUCKET balanced on the corner to fall- neatly covering the egg with a (SFX: PLOP)!

All is guiet as Ralph comes over and gives the bucket a curious sniff. Suddenly, the bucket gives a slight jiggle and there is a (VFX/SFX: BURST OF COLORED LIGHT), which streams under the rim of the bucket (and perhaps leaks through a few seams). Ralph, startled, gives one warning "woof" before darting off. The light from within the bucket gently fades away. Then all is truly still.

EXT. FARMHOUSE - MORNING.

We see the farmhouse and surrounding hills bathed in the golden light of sunrise. We hear (SFX: ROOSTER CROW).

I NT. ATTIC - MORNING

We again hear the (SFX: ROOSTER CROW) through an OPEN WINDOW. We see BJ awaken with a start and Baby Bop beginning to rouse from makeshift beds. Bop’s baby carriage is nearby.

BABY BOP (Yawns luxuriously. Smacks lips)

- MORNING AND INT. BARN - MORNING

(MUSIC NOTE: There should be music which starts simply and builds in energy under throughout; in essence an extended prologue moving smoothly into the next song).

we see morning light streaming onto the screen door of the front porch. Chickens scratch in the front yard. The door swings open to reveal Abby and Marcella energetically heading into the day.

ABBY (Calling back)

Thanks for the breakfast. Grandma!

MARCELLA It was the best!

GRANDMA (VO) Oh my, aren’t you sweet!

As the girls come bounding out, we can see Cody coming too (a bit less enthusiastically). He is carrying his FOOTBALL and munching the remnants of a MUFFIN.

CODY (nice; mouth full)

Mmmph- thanks Grandma!

Cody catches up with the girls, who are bursting with good cheer. All continue to walk.

CODY (Misconstrues)

Yeah- with Grandma baking pies for that contest, and Grandpa already out in the fields, I don’t know anything to do either.

MARCELLA No, I meant I don't know what to do firsti

ABBY There are a million ways to have fun on a farm!

BARNEY (VO) It just takes a little imagination, Cody!

The kids are surprised (and the girls delighted) to see Barney strolling across the grass to join them. He is decked out in FARMER CLOTHES.

GIRLS Barney!

As Cody looks at Barney with surprise, BJ runs into frame and strips him of the football.

BJ Hey Cody, think fast!

CODY (Happy surprise)

Huh?

BJ (Ball in hand) Yes! Interception! He goes for the touchdownI

CODY Oh yeah?

BJ runs ahead as Cody laughingly gives chase. Barney and the girls laugh. We hear (SFXs SQUEAKY WHEELS) approaching.

BABY BOP Wait for me! Wait for me!

Baby Bop is pushing her beloved BABY CARRIAGE. Inside the carriage, a mortified Ralph the dog peeks out from under Bop’s blankey.

BABY BOP I’m giving dog baby a ridel

Ralph gives an embarrassed little whimper. Barney and the girls laugh. BJ and Cody continue to run around in the background.

BARNEY Oh, I just love to have fun on a farm!

(SONG: "FUN ON THE FARM" ORIGINAL - APPROX 2:00)

In this song, we want to show kids and dinos having lots of fun in various farm locations. Lots of quick cuts, interesting angles, farm animals, and slapstick. Also, Cody is now at least able to enjoy playing with the dinos, even if he still feels a bit nettled by their presence.

NOTE: During this song we should still see lots of imagination from the dinos and the girls, but Cody remains fairly unimaginative. Others see things as they playfully "could" be, Cody is pragmatic.

The song should be about different fun things to see and do on a farm; we should include things like tractors and animals. It could also have a simple repeating chorus, possibly including "animal sounds" (Ba-a-a, Moo, Oink, etc). Consider possibly making it a game song: "can you see what (does this) or (Makes this sound)".

On a couple of occasions, our characters should interact briefly with the BUCKET- standing, dancing or sitting on it. It may give a little wiggle afterwards, unnoticed by anyone.

We should have various scenes of kids and dinos interacting with animals♦ Petting them, staring them down, imitating their sounds or actions, etc.

Inside the barn, we should see a LARGE PIG who is sleeping blissfully (and SNORING) through all of this fun. We'll return to him/her later.

As a continuing bit of business. Baby Bop gives baby carriage rides to a variety of creatures- a chicken, piglet, baby goat, rabbit, etc. Whenever she gives a ride, it's to a "baby" even if the animal is fully grown: i.e., "dog baby", "chicken baby", "pig baby", etc.

BARNEYS The Movie Final Draft Last revised! April 22, 1995 50

Somewhere in here, BJ could toss the football to Cody, who fumbles it- and it lands in the pig's mud.

At some point, one or more dinos might dance or chase into a stand of corn moments before Grandpa (carrying his HORN, and stalking crows) would come out nearby, look around, shrug it off, then disappear into the field again... just before our dinos return.

Also in the barn, we need to show A ROW OF NESTING HENS, and some WOODEN CRATES marked ''EGGS'* (Not critical for song- but will be used later). We also need to see that there is a SECOND ACCESS DOORWAY into the barn, which is NOT on the same wall as the •’main" doors.

In the BARN INTERIOR, we should be able to see a ground level and an upper level. As the song nears its end, we should have all characters dancing on the upper level. One by one, the three human kids will jump into a pile of hay. Finally, Barney jumps- causing an explosion of hay that fills the frame. When the hay settles, we see Barney sitting on his fanny, with the hay spread out around him in all directions- sort of a "ground zero" effect.

A HORSE, looking on, does a big lip-curling (SFX: HORSE LAUGH), causing others to laugh. Barney then delivers his next line in an overly theatrical, not quite believable way. He's up to something...

BARNEY (Smacks lips)

Miran-mimn-minni 1 After all that fun, I’m sort of...thirsty!

Barney takes a large WATER-DIPPER off a HOOK, then looks around a bit. He's still over-acting rather obviously.

BARNEY HMmnim. Here's a water dipper...but I can't find the water bucket. (To Cody; hint of meaning) Can you find the bucket, Cody?

Cody is slightly puzzled by this play-acting, but is willing to help.

CODY Uh...surel I think I saw it out by

the pump.

Cody hurries out of the barn.

DAY.

Cody goes directly to the water bucket, still upside- down by the trough. He lifts it casually...then does a double-take as he sees the EGG sitting on the ground. The egg is the same as when first seen, with the exception that a ring at one end has changed from muted color to vibrant brightness.

CODY (Spellbound)

Hey...

Growing more excited, he picks it up and runs towards the barn door. He holds the egg high, while he carries the bucket in his other hand.

CODY Hey! Look what I found! Look what I... (interrupted)

At the entrance to the barn, Cody stumbles over the bucket! The egg goes flying into the barn! We see it go over the heads of the rest of our surprised group.

BARNEY Uh-oh!

Without really looking, Barney quickly kicks out one foot and rolls Baby Bop's untended baby carriage under the egg's path! It lands inside with a (SFX: PLOP) and rolls to a safe stop (SFX: SQUEAKY WHEELS).

CODY (Contrite)

...found.

MARCELLA (Low, to Abby)

Definitely a butterfingers.

Everyone gathers around the carriage as the egg is removed and examined. Cody’s enthusiasm quickly returns.

CODY It looks like some sort of...egg or something.

MARCELLA It's too big to come from a chicken1

BJ (Enthusiastic)

Maybe it was a really BIG chicken1

He notices the skeptical looks from others.

BJ Hey, it was just an ideal

Baby Bop reaches for the egg.

BABY BOP I wanna give it a ridel

BJ, realizing that Bop is getting to be a mild pest, pats his sister on the back, and leads her away from the group (giving a wink, if possible). She pushes the carriage (SFX: SQUEAKS).

BJ Maybe later. Sissy. I don't think the cat has had a ride yet...

BABY BOP Ooh, yeahl Here kitty, kitty, kitty1

The action returns to Barney and the kids, still studying the egg from all angles.

ABBY It's got such pretty stripesl

CODY And it looks okay- it's not cracked or anything. It must have fallen out of a nest.

BARNEY Well, I...

Cody, not really listening to Barney, interrupts.

CODY Hey, maybe Grandma will know!

MARCELLA Let’s go ask herl

The kids happily bolt toward the house. Barney, still holding the egg, does a one-legged spin as they pass him.

BARNEY Whoa-oa-oa1 (Chuckles)

During this spin, Barney's FARMER OUTFIT (VFX: DISAPPEARS). As the dust settles, Barney notices the large PIG who is still dozing in a corner of the barn.

BARNEY Uh-oh, it looks like Mr. Pig is going to sleep the whole day away. (Speaks directly to camera) Maybe you can help wake him up! I'll count three, then you shout "cock-a-doodle-doo1" Ready? One, two, three... (leading crowd) Cock-a-doodle-doo!

When the "Cock-a-doodle-doo" hits, we see the pig suddenly wake up. Using VFX AUGMENTATION his eyes pop humorously wide open, following which he shows us a big (VFX) sleepy smile.

The three children come bursting into the KITCHEN, where Grandma is in full pie-baking swing. She is humorously but pleasantly frazzled looking- dotted with flour and various colorful stains. Baby Fig sits in a high chair, happily and messily licking GOO off of a WOODEN MIXING SPOON.

ABBY Grandma, there's a...!

CODY Hey...1

GRANDMA (Pleasant)

Just a moment, dearies- Pie coming out!

The kids are momentarily distracted by the activity in the kitchen. As Grandma quickly pulls an ODD-LOOKING PIE from the oven, the kids look around. The spacious country kitchen is crowded with FRUITS & VEGETABLES of every description. DOZENS OF EMPTY PIE TINS are stacked precariously, next to a huge lump of PIE DOUGH, a ROLLING PIN, and some PIE TINS WITH RAW DOUGH waiting to be filled. MULTIPLE SAUCEPANS of PIE FILLING are (SFX: GURGLING, RATTLING & STEAMING- almost musical) on the stovetop. MIXING BOWLS, SPICES, AND UTENSILS are scattered about. There are a few highly suspicious looking BAKED PIES which are cooling. It's a noisy, colorful cross between a pie factory and a mad scientist's lab.

Grandma pokes the ODD PIE with a FORK, unsure of its merits.

GRANDMA I'm going to win a ribbon this year even if I have to make every pie I can imagine... (pointing) ...from "Blueberry Beef" to "Banana Macaroni Meringue"!

Abby interrupts this monomania with her big news.

ABBY Grandma, Cody found an egg outside!

GRANDMA (Distracted)

Yes, we have lots of eggs, dear...

GRANDMA Well, if it's not a chicken's egg, I'm not sure what it would be. (a beat) But I know who would! Mildred Goldfinch- our neighbor on the other side of the field!

This sparks happy recognition in the Newton kids.

CODY The bird lady!

ABBY (To Marcella)

We met her last year!

GRANDMA She's a bird-watcher, dears. And I think she knows everything about birds and eggs. (a beat) She's coming over this afternoon to take my pies to town for the baking contest...but if you can't wait, why don't you take the egg to her right now?

The kids go diving into action, heading for the door.

ABBY Great idea!

MARCELLA Thanks, Mrs. Greenfield!

CODY See you later!

Grandma is immediately distracted by the latest (SFX: FUNNY COOKING SOUND) and returns to her baking.

/WOODS - DAY.

(SONG: "THE HAPPY WANDERER"/MARCH TEMPO)

In a short MONTAGE, we see Barney and the kids singing and hiking happily through a field, with the farm receding in the background. They cross through a beautiful woodsy area, eventually reaching some tall grass. Cody is carrying the egg is a PICNIC BASKET.

(MUSIC NOTE: The song begins with a march-tempo flourish of drums, then the melody line is carried by the three kids, who are "whistling" as Barney sings.)

KIDS (Whistling under verse)

BARNEY I love to a-wandering Along the mountain track And as I go, I love to sing My knapsack on my back!

BARNEY & KIDS Val-de-ri Val-de-ra Val-de-ri Val-de ra-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha Val-de-ri Val-de-ra

BARNEY My knapsack on my back!

(MUSIC: Whistling and marching beat only)

KIDS (Continue to whistle)

As our group reaches a stand of high grass (with Barney in the rear), they are surprised mid-whistle when MISS GOLDFINCH pops up out of hiding, with a CAMERA held to her eye! She is an energetic 50+, and presents a funny birdlike appearance (both in look and quick, quirky mannerisms). She wears a PITH HELMET adorned with a COLORFUL PLUME. Her KHAKI HIKING SHIRT & SHORTS are accented with a COLORFUL BANDANNA worn around her neck. BRIGHT YELLOW KNEE-LENGTH SOCKS and ORANGE TENNIS SHOES give her a "Bird leg" look. Her HEAVY-RIMMED ROUND GLASSES give her eyes a birdlike appearance. She wears a FLASH CAMERA on a cord around her neck, where it fights for space with the OVERSIZED BINOCULARS she uses for birdwatching.
