Welcome back to The Hive!

I can sit here and dwell on the last two performances but I’m not going to do that.

We’ve played enough games and all barring two of them, I’ve been really pleased with them.

The last two games are fresh in our mind and they’re the ones that people discuss but we’ll put it behind us. They were two bad days for us, in particular Tuesday night, but it’s our job to learn from them and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

This afternoon, we’ll see if I get the reaction that I’m looking for following the Ebbsfleet defeat. Anyone can respond in training but that’s not the time – it’s all about how you perform out on the pitch.

We were in a really good place just a week/10 days ago and that’s where we need to get back to. That’s football – it can change very quickly.

We always show respect to the opponent and we touch on what they’re about but more than ever before this season, this afternoon’s game is about us.

We’ve been good and that’s what we need to find again. The majority of our work this week has been on us.

The less experienced players in the squad who have had to step up over the last few weeks have done really well, and their efforts have been massive.

It’s been a tough learning curve the last couple of games and I’m looking forward to integrating the more senior players back in to guide the younger players.

We’re all in this together. It will take all of us, that’s everyone at the club, to pull together and turn around what’s been a bad week for us.

I’d like to welcome our fans back to The Hive London for this afternoon’s game against Solihull Moors.

We can’t dwell on the last two games. We can’t change what’s happened in the past, this afternoon is a new game and another chance to pick up three points.

As captain, I’m always trying to lift the spirits in the camp but have been more so over the past few days. The boys have to have belief in themselves and I’ll help in any way that I can to push that.

We’re the only ones that can put right what’s happened over the last few days and we’ll do our best to get us back on track.

I’m looking forward to getting back on The Hive pitch. Looking at our recent form at home we’ve had two wins and two clean sheets so it can only boost our confidence even more.

Hopefully we can build on that form and get back to putting in good performances which we know we’re capable of.I know Solihull have had a few injuries, but they have boys coming back. They could have won the league last year and they’ve

only got stronger, so we know it’s going to be a really tough game.

There’s never an easy game in this league and I’m not expecting this to be one either.

We need all the fans to stick with us and get behind us. We’ve had a decent start to the season, and we’ve put ourselves in a good position considering the injury issues we’ve had.

Solihull Moors FC is a merger between the former Solihull Borough and Moor Green football clubs.Solihull Borough was formed in 1953 by Joe McGorian and the Club was originally known as Lincoln FC. Borough progressed through the local leagues before joining the Midland Combination in 1969, where they spent 22 seasons, eventually resulting in promotion to the Southern League. In 1989 the club was forced to sell its Widney Lane ground to property developers but after a proposed relocation fell through, a ground-share was agreed with local neighbours Moor Green - this was to last for ten years until the purchase of Damson Park in August 1999.

Moor Green was formed in 1901. The first ground was on a part of a farm in Moor Green Lane, Moseley. Their ancestral home, The Moorlands, was acquired in 1930, and was situated in Hall Green, a suburb of south Birmingham. The 2003/4 season was a momentous one for Moors gaining a place in the newly formed Nationwide Conference North; However, the inaugural season was to prove a traumatic one with the devastation caused by two arson attacks at The Moorlands in January 2005, when the main stand and clubhouse were gutted leaving the club homeless. Moors thus became tenants of Solihull Borough at Damson Park.

With both clubs struggling to secure gates big enough to sustain the two teams, the merger of both seemed an obvious way forward and formed in the summer of 2007, Solihull Moors Football Club became one of the youngest clubs in senior English football. The new club took the place of Moor Green in the Blue Square Conference North. The new club took the place of Moor Green in the Blue Square Conference North.

Bob Faulkner, the Moor Green manager was given the job to take the new club forward, but Borough Boss Mickey Moore would return in the new club’s hour of need.For their first season Bob Faulkner ran with much the same team as the last Moor Green outfit and the Moors first competitive game was a 1-1 draw at home to Barrow AFC on August 11th, 2007, with a 90th minute equalizer from Darren Middleton, earning him the accolade of scoring the first league goal for Solihull Moors. The first win came two weeks later with a 3-1 home victory over Gainsborough Trinity, but the remainder of the campaign proved a struggle with the team rarely out of the bottom six in the league table. Survival was confirmed after the 40th league game of the season with a memorable 2-1 victory at Blyth Spartans on the penultimate Tuesday of the season. Andy Ducros was the goal scoring hero with a brace of goals. The Moors finished 17th in the league with 47 points. There was a decent run in the FA Cup, as the fourth qualifying round was reached. A 3-0 win at Soham Town Rangers, with Jason Moore scoring the first ever Solihull hat trick, and then an unforgettable 2-1 win at Blue Square North leaders Kettering Town. However, Moors failed to reach the first-round proper of the FA Cup after a 5-0 defeat at ex Blue Square Premier outfit Rushden & Diamonds.

Eight new signings greeted the start 2008/09 season but it soon proved to be a struggle with only two points being gained from the first five games. In truth, it was the away form which kept the Moors sucked in at the wrong end of the table with only 16 points being collected away from Damson Park. Keeper Danny Crane, the enormous central defender Liam Daly and striker Jake Edwards did, however, suggest that the tide was turning but nevertheless Solihull finished in 16th

position, with a better points total than the previous season, so progress of some sort was made. Whilst the first team was battling at the wrong end of the table, the youth team were having a storming season. They finished as champions of the Midland Floodlit Youth League, finishing ten points clear of AFC Telford United and also reached the second-round proper of the FA Youth Cup before finally bowing out 2-0 at home to Tranmere Rovers in a tense, close game. Earlier in the competition, Solihull had caught the attention of many people with a comprehensive 18-0 win over Wellington in a qualifying round. Five of the squad signed for the Senior club during the season. The 2009/10 campaign saw another poor start despite summer signings which on paper looked good. By mid September Moors were languishing in 21st place. Bob Faulkner brought in 10 more players to stem the tide and a wonderful run between mid January and mid March saw the team up to a healthy 13th in the league. It was all to little avail, however, as by the end of a gruelling season Moors were again back in 17th position having gained only 3 more points in the final 7 games of the season. A total of 42 points

Birmingham and Solihull Bees became tenants of the club during the 2010 close season and would play their rugby matches on either Fridays or Sundays.By the start of the 2010/11 season, our manager of 25 years, had put together the best by far Moors team we had seen. Bob said that this team would need time to settle but would score goals. New goalkeeper Jasbir Singh ably supported by a formidable defence lead by captain Theo Streete had none of the frailties of previous teams, whilst club stalwart Junior English, new boy Adam Cunnington and the master signing from last season, Ryan Beswick, were able to attack in a manner not seen by supporters for many years . Maintaining a healthy position for the first half of the season, we were all shattered when Bob Faulkner sadly passed away in February. Amazingly this galvanised the team and with Mickey Moore stepping up to fill the empty void the Moors went from strength to strength and with 8 games to go were in the play off places. It was emotional for us all and with a small squad, draining for the players – the momentum slipped, and we missed out by 4 points.

During the summer break before the 2011/12 season Mickey Moore decided to take up an offer from Mansfield Town and Marcus Bignot, ex Crewe, Bristol Rovers, QPR and Millwall was announced as his replacement a week later. He inherited a youthful squad, but the spark was missing and having won no pre season friendlies, we lost the first seven games of the season. Using his connections in the game, Marcus brought in several new players, and the tide began to turn, so much so that by January the possibility of

the play offs seemed achievable. However, it proved impossible to maintain the momentum and by the end of the season the club finished just one point above the drop zone.

2012/13 saw a blend of youth and experience but with only one win the first six outings, manager Bignot brought himself out of retirement for the visit to Droylsden and Moors took all three points in a 4 – 2 score line. Things got a lot better in November when we recorded back to back wins against title chasing Guiseley and Altrincham and by mid season eyes were cautiously cast at the play off positions although by April, we were four places adrift of the mark but a creditable ninth league position.

2013/14 saw the successful culmination of efforts to introduce a proper youth structure and ladies/girls’ section into the club. The number of teams grew from three to 27! The club looked forward to growing its own local talent. Most of the previous team stayed and were joined by seven quality players from the Midlands for what was another good season. The team finished eighth in the league having been top at the halfway stage whilst gates increased by 80%. Major changes in the basic structure were introduced as Solihull Moors transformed itself into a community interest club.

2014/15 Marcus Bignot decided to run with the nucleus of the previous seasons team bolstered by new signings in the shape of Liam Daly and Tony Breeden from Leamington and Owen Story from Brackley Town. The first half of the season saw Moors in the play off positions but just like the previous campaign results after Christmas were disappointing and the team finished 12th in the league with 55 points. On the Youth/ Community side vastly experienced Mark Fogarty was brought it as the momentum in this area was stepped up and Moors became an established name in the Borough for providing football opportunities for school children and members of society who for a variety of reasons could not find an outlet for their soccer skills.

2015/16 saw 11 new signings with Vanarama National League experience and it was clear as early as the pre-season friendlies that this could be the squad to take us up to the National League. We went on an unbeaten run that lasted into December and remained unbeaten away (bar one unfortunate day at Harrogate) throughout the whole season. Having flirted around the top of the table throughout the first half of the season we started the second half as league leaders after taking six points off Nuneaton over the Christmas / New Year holiday period and there we stayed winning

the title three weeks before the end of the campaign.

2016/17 and our first season in The National League saw a different looking squad than the one expected following the winning of the National North. Gone were Michael Nottingham (Salford), Club Captain Theo Streete (injury), Gaz Dean, Jimmy Armson and Adam Walker (all Brackley) and our longest serving player by a country mile, Junior English (Worcester). Replacements in the shape of Jamey Osborne (Redditch) Shep Murombedzi (Torquay), Jordan Fagbola (Rochdale), Omari Sterling-James (Cheltenham), and Harry White (Barnsley) completed the picture, whilst the coaching staff was strengthened with the addition of Gary Whild from Kidderminster Harriers and Solihull old boy Mickey Moore back from Mansfield Town. We took 22 points from our first 18 games in the top league - history suggested that form would just about keep us up at the end of the season. However, at the end of October Marcus Bignot suddenly quit the club to take over at Grimsby and took with him Whild and Moore (and soon after, Osborne and Asante)

The void was filled by Liam McDonald a 31-year-old who had successfully cut his managerial teeth at Redditch and Hednesford. What was about to follow was a massive reorganisation of the coaching and playing staff with younger players, mostly from lower divisions, filling the gaps. With the blend of new talent combined with the experience of those few stalwarts from the previous campaign, a new force under the Captaincy of Liam Daly began to emerge. There was much to learn and the path was rocky but survival was ensured in the penultimate game of the season which saw Moors finish in sixteenth spot with 54 points. Off the pitch The Automated Technology Group Stadium was brought up to National League standard whilst Moors Academy and Community Moors went from strength to strength.

2017/18 saw a miserable start to the season as we propped up the league. Liam McDonald made way for Richard Money, but he quit after just 20 days before Mark Yates took over the reins with Tim Flowers as his assistant. At that stage The Club had played 20 league matches and amassed just eleven points. In his term of office Moors played 26, won 11, drew 10 and lost 5. At home they were unbeaten up to the last game of the season. Had they produced that form throughout the entire season we would certainly have made the play offs.

Seamlessly Tim Flowers stepped up to the lead role and Gary Whild as his assistant. Several key signings have been made to strengthen the squad and there was an air of expectancy around the club as it embarked on its third year in the top-flight. Indeed, it turned out to be quite the season, as Solihull Moors made club history by gaining their highest ever league finish. The team finished second, just three points behind eventual champions Leyton Orient. The season didn’t quite have the fairy tale ending as AFC Fylde defeated Flowers’ side in the play-off semi-final. Moors ended on 86 points, narrowly missed out on an FA Cup third round tie against Blackpool and reached the FA Trophy quarter-finals.2019/20. In the summer of 2019, Flowers and his coaching staff signed three-year deals to extend their stay with the club. In came last season’s league top scorer Paul McCallum and former National League champion Mitch Hancox as the Moors built both on and off-the-field – the building of a new main stand being the topic of conversation throughout the off-season. A week before the start of the season one of the league’s stand-out defenders, Callum Howe, joined from Harrogate Town.

T Ryan turned professional at Port Vale in April 2013 having initially been an academy player at Stoke City.

In a five-year career there he made 28 appearances and had various loan spells at Worcester City, Newcastle and Macclesfield. In 2013 he had a trial at Fulham. He joined the Moors in the summer of 2018 after being released from Vale upon the expiry of his contract. The number one went on to play in every minute of every National League game last season and kept 20 clean sheets.

26-year-old central defender Alex Gudger signed from Brackley Town prior to the start of last season.

He was an ever present with the Saints in his two-year stint at St James Park and was also a member of the squad that came so close to gaining promotion to the National League last season losing away at Harrogate Town in the play-off final. He played at Wembley in the nail-biting Buildbase FA Trophy win over Bromley.

He played a huge chunk of games in his first season at the Moors, gaining plenty of recognition for both his defending and goalscoring ability. Gudger collected a number of awards at the end of season dinner in April 2019.

The highly-rated utility man was Liam McDonald’s second signing for Moors.

George had already bagged 10 goals from midfield for Hednesford Town the previous season. He started his playing career for Cadbury Athletic, bagging 30 goals in a double-winning season that saw the Bournville outfit lift both the Midland Football League Division One title and the Saturday Vase Trophy. For the 2014/15 season, George joined Redditch in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier to quickly become a regular fixture. He gained his England “C” cap at the end of the 2016/17 season and has been a vital cog in the Moors machine for the last couple of campaigns.

Adi Yussuf has re-joined the club on a short-term loan until January 5th 2020.

The 27-year-old departed the SportNation.bet Stadium in the summer to join League One side Blackpool upon the expiry of his Moors contract.However, after finding game time difficult to come by in his first few months at Bloomfield Road, Yussuf has returned to Solihull – a place where, last season, he netted 21 goals in all competitions to help the side to a second placed finish in the Vanarama National League.Those goals made him the club’s top goalscorer for the 2018/19 campaign.

He was a key member of the Rovers team that came second in the Premier League in his first season and then won the title in 1994/5. Tim was capped 11 times for England and hung up his gloves in 2003.

Since then he has been the goalkeeping Coach at Leicester City, Manchester City, Northampton Town, Nottingham Forest and most recently at Fulham where during his tenure the club reached the play offs. He has also been Assistant Manager at Coventry, Queens Park Rangers, Hull and Kidderminster and had a spell in the top job at Stafford Rangers. Part of the Management partnership which performed the “Great Escape” last season, Tim took full charge of the team in June 2018. He then led the club to its highest ever league position of second in the fifth tier, ending the season just three points behind eventual champions Leyton Orient. The season also saw the Moors reach the second round of the FA Cup and the quarter-final of the FA Trophy. In June 2019, he was rewarded with a new three-year contract at the club.

Flowers was born in Kenilworth and began his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1984. He quickly broke into the first team, becoming their regular goalkeeper by his 18th birthday, but his breakthrough came at the bleakest time in the club’s history, as the two seasons he spent there both ended in relegation (in 1984–85) to the Third Division and in 1985–86 to the Fourth. After Wolves fell into the Fourth Division to complete a hat-trick of successive relegations, they had to sell Flowers as part of the effort to avoid bankruptcy.

Southampton

He joined First Division club Southampton for £70,000 in June

1986. He was understudy to Peter Shilton in 1986–87, but managed nine league appearances (the first in a 5–1 defeat to Manchester United in mid September) and also played a further nine games on loan to Swindon Town in the Third Division. He made another nine league appearances in 1987–88 (by which time Shilton had joined Derby County) and returned to Swindon for a five-match loan spell, before becoming Southampton’s regular goalkeeper in the 1989–90 season. Within a couple of years of becoming Southampton’s first choice goalkeeper, Flowers was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the English league and inevitable rumours of a transfer to a bigger club began.

Leicester City

He was transferred to Leicester City, where he collected a Football League Cup winner’s medal in his first season. In August 2002 he went on loan to Manchester City to provide cover for Carlo Nash after injuries to Peter Schmeichel and Nicky Weaver. He stayed with Leicester for one season after their relegation to Division One two years later before retiring as a player. His final appearance for Leicester City was against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in May 2003. It was the final game of the season, and with Leicester 1–0 down, Flowers came on as a late substitute for Ian Walker. Leicester were awarded a late penalty, and despite shouts from the travelling Leicester fans for Flowers to take the penalty, and Flowers himself signalling to the bench, Micky Adams (then Leicester manager) ignored the fans, and allowed Trevor Benjamin to take it, who scored.

Midfielder Andy Williams made almost 300 League appearances after leaving Solihull Borough. Previously with hometown Dudley, he impressed with Solihull in the Midland Combination while an accountant before joining Coventry City for a club record £30,000 in July 1985. He moved to Rotherham United with Gareth Evans in an exchange deal involving Dean Emerson in October 1986, becoming Howard Wilkinson’s first signing for Leeds United at £170,000 in November 1988. Helping win the Second Division title in 1989-90, he later played for Notts County, Rotherham again, Hull City, Scarborough, Gainsborough, Matlock and Guiseley.

Much-travelled striker John Gayle played in the top-flight after leaving Solihull Borough. He had spells with Alvechurch, Highgate United, Tamworth, Stratford Town, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Mile Oak Rovers, Bromsgrove Rovers and Burton Albion prior to joining Wimbledon with Steve Cotterill in March 1989. Sold to Birmingham City for £175,000 in November 1990, he helped them win the Leyland/DAF Cup in 1991 and promotion in 1991-92, then had spells at Coventry City, Burnley and Stoke City before winning promotion with Northampton Town and Scunthorpe United. He later played for Shrewsbury, Torquay United and Moor Green.

Former Moor Green midfielder Ian Taylor scored in Aston Villa’s 1996 League Cup final triumph. Born in Birmingham, he played for Shirley Crusaders before joining Moor Green in August 1988. He featured in two Midland Floodlit Cup successes and was top scorer in 1991-92. Sold to Port Vale for £40,000 in July 1992, he helped them win the Autoglass Trophy in 1993 and promotion in 1993-94, moving to Sheffield Wednesday for £1,000,000 in July 1994. Joining Villa for a similar fee five months later, he was an FA Cup finalist in 2000 and moved to Derby County in July 2003. He was leading scorer in 2003-04, then played for Northampton Town.

Central defender David Busst appeared regularly in the top-flight after leaving Moor Green. He impressed with Moor Green in the Southern League while working in insurance, helping to win the Midland Floodlit Cup in 1991. Moving to Coventry City in January 1992, he was given his Premier League debut in their 1-1 draw at Norwich City a year later. He replaced Andy Pearce in the heart of defence and netted four goals in 50 Premier League games until his career was ended by a badly broken leg at Manchester United in April 1996. Bob Faulkner became the Midlands’ longest-serving football manager. Appointed Moor Green’s boss on Boxing Day 1985, he guided them to promotion as Southern League Midland Division runners-up in 1987-88 and steered the Moors back to the Southern League Premier Division in 1999-2000. They became founder members of the Conference North in 2004 and when Moor Green merged with Solihull Borough to form Solihull Moors in 2007, he was given the job to take the new club forward. He had spent over 25 years in the club’s hot-seat, earning the tag of ‘Non-League Alex Ferguson’, before his death from cancer in February 2011.

Former England Semi-Pro right-back Marcus Bignot managed Solihull Moors to the Conference North title in 2015-16. Initially a Birmingham City trainee, he played for Telford United, Kidderminster Harriers, Crewe Alexandra, Bristol Rovers, QPR and Rushden & Diamonds, featuring in their 2002-03 Third Division title triumph. He rejoined QPR in March 2004 and helped to clinch promotion, then played for Millwall, Oldham Athletic and Solihull Moors. Managing them from June 2011 until November 2016, also plotting their 2016 Birmingham Senior Cup final triumph, he has since managed Grimsby Town, Barrow, Chester and Guiseley.

Solihull Borough won the Southern League Midland Division title in 1991-92. Ralph Punsheon signed several experienced players, including former Walsall central defender Phil Hawker, with Solihull winning the title at the first attempt. Chris Burton was leading marksman with 28 goals as Solihull won 29 of their 42 games. Their only home defeat was 1-0 against Bedworth United and they gained 97 points, finishing six ahead of runners-up Hednesford Town. The turning point in the championship race was Solihull’s astonishing 6-1 victory at home to Hednesford in mid-March. Former England U-21 striker Keith Bertschin helped Borough to clinch the title.

Solihull Moors finished Conference National runners-up in 2018-19. Tim Flowers’ side won their opening three matches and five straight wins in September included a 5-0 victory over Bromley. The Moors took Blackpool to an FA Cup second round replay before narrowly losing 3-2 and missing out on a dream tie at home to Arsenal. Nathan Blissett grabbed a hat-trick as they won 3-0 at Aldershot in February and went top for the first time. Jermaine Hylton was another hat-trick hero as they beat Maidstone United 5-0, losing just three of their final 20 games. They missed out on a trip to Wembley after losing 1-0 at home to AFC Fylde in the play-off semi-final.

Solihull Moors reached the Birmingham Senior Cup final for the first time since the two clubs merged in 2007. Solihull Borough and Moor Green had both previously won the trophy. The Moors lost 2-0 to West Brom in the final at The Hawthorns. Strikers Adam Cunnington and Matt Smith formed a lethal partnership as Solihull Moors only narrowly missed out on the Conference North play-offs, finishing in seventh place following a late season collapse. Manager Bob Faulkner sadly died in February, completing over 25 years in charge of Moor Green and Solihull Moors combined, replaced by his assistant Micky Moore for the remainder of the season.

Solihull Moors stormed to the Conference North title in 2015-16. Marcus Bignot’s side won 25 of their 42 games and suffered just one away defeat. They gained 85 points, finishing nine ahead of runners-up North Ferriby United and winning the title comfortably with three games to spare. Akwasi Asante was leading marksman with 17 goals. Promotion to the Conference National was secured on a night that Solihull were not even playing, as a defeat for North Ferriby at Stalybridge Celtic mathematically confirmed their championship success. The Moors also lifted the Birmingham Senior Cup, defeating Birmingham City 2-1 at St Andrews.

MIDDLESEX FA CENTRAL LEAGUE

The Middlesex FA Central winter league kicked off last Sunday at Rectory Park, Northolt. The Bees over 50’s won their group winning games against both Feltham 3-2 and Staines 2-0 and drew 3-3 with Middlesex Blues after recovering from being 3-1 down. The Bees over 60’s finished second with victories over Staines 4-2 in which Richard Fincher grabbed a hat-trick and a 2-0 win over Cedars in which Richard was again on the scoresheet. We managed to give debuts to several players to experience competitive walking football and finished the week at our Friday session by handing out commemorative medals to our over 65’s squad for reaching the UK finals at Worcester recently.

Our over 65’s are off to Norwich soon for a tournament and many of the players will stay over for a long weekend at Great Yarmouth, showing not only the health benefits but the social side of our set up too.

In a frantic opening twenty minutes the Bees came from two goals down thanks to goals from Simeon Akinola and Charlee Adams.

But the hosts showed their dominance as they added two further strikes in the second half through Nolan and Sho-Silva who netted two of his own for the Shaymen.

Hallifax opened the scoring on 11 minutes in controversial circumstances as Sho-Silva tapped home, however the Bees felt there was an offside in the build up, but there was nothing doing from referee Tom Reeves.

It went from bad to worse just three minutes later as McLaiden broke into the area and fired past Loach to double the hosts advantage.

But the Bees hit straight back as Akinola cut inside his man and curled beautifully into the top right hand corner to give Darren Currie’s side a lifeline.

They were level just minutes later as the ball dropped to Adams who’s snapshot went in off the post to send the travelling fans into delight.

Up the other end Scott Loach did well to deny Clarke after his towering header was heading for the corner, with Sho Silva lurking right in front of the Bees number one.

Four minutes before the break Alfie Pavey had a golden chance to send the Bees ahead as he peeled off to the backpost but his header was poor and hit the side netting.

After the break the hosts showed why they have such a formidable home record as they upped the pressure through the second half.

But the Bees had chances of their own as Alexander powered an effort from 18 yards just wide of the near post, before Pavey again could only header straight at the keeper after a superb ball from Hernandez.

The hosts pressure told with 20 minutes to go as Nolan prodded home after turning Reynolds in the area, the goal had been coming throughout the second period.

As Currie’s men chased the game they were punished in stoppage time as Sho-Silva netted his second of the game as he sent a powerful effort past Loach into the back of the net.

After a cagey opening 45 minutes, two early second half strikes from Mason-Clark and Wes Fonguck gave Darren Currie’s men a comfortable cushion.

A solid defensive display meant it was two home clean sheets on the spin, in a confidence boosting victory at The Hive, London.

In the early exchanges Ricardo Santos made a superb block to deny Ethan Chislett as he struck just inside the area.The Bees struggled to really get going in the opening 15 minutes, as the buoyant visitors started quickly following their win over Stockport in their previous match.

Midway through the half and it was Currie’s side who made the next opening, as Mason-Clark slipped in Fonguck but his shot was well saved by Mitch Walker. Seconds later it was Fonguck again but he couldn’t get the better of the Shots number one.

There was plenty of endeavour from the Bees but the final ball massively let them down in the opening 45, as they looked to build on back to back wins.

At the other end Shields’ effort was brilliantly blocked at the end of the half, as the visitors tried to assert themselves at the end of the half.

That was the final opportunity of a half that lacked any cutting edge on a chilly autumn evening in North London.

Currie opted to bring on new signing Alfie Pavey at the break as he replaced Josh Walker. Just three minutes into the second half the Bees had the lead as Mason-Clark broke through and fired into the back of the net.

In response the Shots came inches away from an immediate response as Powell struck a decent free-kick from 30 yards out, leaving Loach scrambling across goal.

Just eight minutes later the Bees had a second of the evening, a whipped in ball was headed clear as far as Fonguck who curled an inch perfect strike into the top corner. It was superb strike and sent the Bee Army into delight after a fast start to second half.

With twenty minutes to go the Shots should have halved the deficit but Harrison Panayiotou slotted wide from six yards after the ball fell to him kindly.

The bar was rattled up the other end as Fonguck lifted the ball over Walker on the rebound, after Akinola broke into the area and saw his shot saved. The Bees were scintillating to watch at times in the second period, as their confidence grew following the goals.

J Taylor saw a long distance effort fly over the bar, as the Irishman looked to add the icing on the Bees cake.

The win means Currie’s men head to Halifax in good form as they will look to gain a positive result on the road against a promotion rival.

A further three points saw the Bees climb to fifth in the Vanarama National League, with still only one defeat to their name.

New Huddersfield Town manager Danny Cowley has claimed that his side have “forgotten how to win”. The comments came after the side lost 4-2 away ay West Bromwich Albion, despite leading twice, and conceding three times in the last 15 minutes. The side finished bottom of the Premier League last season, winning just three games all season and picking up 16 points. This season, the Terriers find themselves in the bottom position again, having not won any of their games, drawing one and losing seven of their opening games. “We didn’t play for 90 minutes” said Cowley after the game. “At 60 minutes we started to play for the end, and physically and mentally we are not where we need to be. At the moment we are a team that maybe has forgotten how to win and manage the game”.

Manchester United are set to commence a “detailed and comprehensive study” about installing rail seating in their stadium. After many attempts having been made to try to persuade supporters not to stand in seating areas during games have not worked, a change in the safety guidelines now allows clubs to apply to put up rail seats in the stadiums. The new seats will soon go on trial at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils contacting Wolverhampton Wanderers, who installed it over the summer, and Tottenham Hotspur, who have it in their new ground, for assistance on managing it. There is currently a legal requirement in place for supporters at games above a certain level to sit at matches, but many fans still choose to continuously stand. “We have fought long and hard for safe standing for many years. We believe it will likely benefit atmosphere but also enhance spectator safety in areas where fans already persistently stand” said a statement by the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust. “As a supporters’ group, naturally supporter safety is our number one priority, so we hope that this added safety measure is put in place sooner rather than later”.

Following last weekend’s results, the third qualifying round of the FA Cup has now been made, again including several of our local sides. Enfield Town will travel to the winner of the replay between Hartley Witney and Chichester City, Hadley face an away trip to Havant and Waterlooville, and Ware will host Potters Bar Town. If they can overcome Worthing in their replay, St Albans City will have an away game at Weymouth. Royston Town are at home to Beaconsfield Town, Hendon will travel to Hayes and Yeading United, King’s Langley will host Corinthian-Casuals and Walthamstow will be at home against Whyteleafe, provided they defeat Abbey Rangers in their replay. These ties are set to be played next weekend.

Last Sunday saw Tottenham Hotspur Women play their second game here at the Hive. Their first game, against Liverpool Women two weeks ago, ended 1-0 to Spurs, with the north London side scoring a penalty just before half time. The Reds picked up a red card midway through the

second half, but Tottenham couldn’t improve on their position despite the extra player advantage. Despite this, they picked up maximum points in the Barclays Women’s Super League game. Last Sunday, however, they were on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline, being beaten by Reading Women in the Continental Cup, the Women’s league cup.

This week has seen Oldham Athletic appoint their fifth manager in the past twelve months. The Latics had appointed former Monaco manager Laurent Banide in mid June, but the Frenchman could only guide the side to two league wins this season, losing four and drawing four, leaving them in 20th place. His replacement was announced within an hour of his dismissal, with former Stevenage player and manager Dino Maamria being appointed. The Tunisian, who has also previously managed Northwich Victoria, Southport and Nuneaton Town, was only sacked by the Boro earlier this month, leaving the side bottom of the table with four defeats and three draws from their opening seven games. “I’m hugely excited to join such an historical football club. The vision and ambition of the chairman was a big factor and the first priority is to stabilise and unite this great football

club” Maamria said. “I’m here to win football matches as well as improve, give confidence and belief to an already talented squad”.

Lincoln City last week moved to fill their vacant managerial position after former manager Danny Cowley, and his brother Nicky, moved to manage Championship side Huddersfield Town. Their replacement was Michael Appleton, the former Preston North End and West Bromwich Albion player. Appleton played four times for City on a loan spell from Manchester United back in 1995. During his managerial career, Appleton has taken charge of the likes of West Brom, Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Oxford United and Leicester City in the Premier League, where he won both of the games that he took charge of. He was most recently working back at the Hawthorns, where he had been managing the under 23 team. His first game in charge last weekend did not go according to plan, however, as his new side were thrashed 6-0 at home by former side Oxford.

As a punishment to the Slovak FA, Wales’ trip to Trnava to play Slovakia will be played behind closed doors. Ryan Giggs takes his squad there on 10th October, with 2000 Welsh fans expected to have tickets. In a statement on the incident, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body said that they had decided to: “order the Slovak Football Association to play its next UEFA competition match as host association behind closed doors, for the racist behaviour of its supporters; to fine the Slovak Football Association with 20,000 euros (£17,700)”. These sanctions have been put on them as a result of the racist chants by some of Slovakia’s fans during a 2-1 win in a qualifying game against Hungary in Budapest earlier this month.

UEFA is looking into the idea of expanding the new Nations League competition. The tournament was first played last year, and was in place largely to replace international friendlies, which were seen to be meaningless, with many players having to travel far and risk injury

The EFL is set to appoint Rick Parry as its’ new chairman. The former Liverpool and Premier League chief executive is expected to take over the position at the EFL soon. The governing body of the Football League has announced that it had named the 64 year old as its chairman designate. If it is approved, Parry’s appointment will then need to be ratified at a general meeting. An EFL statement said that Parry was “one of the UK’s most experienced leaders in football”. It continued to say that he would be tasked with “overseeing the growth and development of the EFL with the aim of ensuring the continued strength of EFL competitions, commercial success and governance”.

Annoyingly, our game at Halifax was the first weekend after I had just moved back down to London for university so this turned into a longer trip for me! I started my trip in Kings Cross at 10:30am catching a train to Leeds. When I arrived in Leeds, I met my parents and a friend I was dragging along for the day outside the station and jumped in the car for the short drive to Halifax. We arrived in Halifax where the sun was shining around 2pm and parked at the ground. We were all ready to go in the ground but as we approached the turnstiles a fair few of us Bees fans were left waiting outside for a good 5 minutes before they actually opened allowing us to get in! Since I hadn’t eaten yet I was buzzing to get in and celebrate being back up north with some chips and gravy! We made our way out to the away end to watch the warm ups and it was nice of Darren Currie to come over to speak to some of the fans pre-game. 3pm got closer and the teams came out ready to go.

The game got going straight away and just 12 minutes in there was a goal. Halifax got through into the box and scored. Despite it clearly being offside, the linesman never flagged. There was a moment of hope when the ref went over to the touchline for a discussion about the goal where I thought it may be disallowed but the goal stood and they were 1 up. Then just 3 minutes later, they doubled their lead when Mcalinden was able to get through the defence and slot his shot past Loach. However, we reacted straightaway and on 17 minutes Simeon Akinola got us a goal back in style, curling his shot into the top corner. Then 3 minutes later it was Charlee Adams who got us level when his shot hit the post and trickled into the back of the net. After a frantic start, the game settled down and despite both teams having a few chances, it was 2-2 at half time. After enjoying some chocolate at half time, I was excited to see what the second half had to give. We started the second half pretty well with a big chance for Pavey which just went wide. On 71 minutes, it was Halifax who scored again when Nolan got his shot past Loach. And on 91 minutes, Sho-Silva put the final nail in the coffin as some poor defending let him in the box to score a final goal. The game finished 4-2 but the players came over to the 110 applauding fans before heading into the tunnel.

We made our way back to the car and enjoyed a short drive home back to Leeds meaning we were back in time for a night in with Strictly! Though it was disappointing to lose, we showed some great fight so it’s on to the next one!

As with Fylde, there is a scarcity of history between the two clubs playing this afternoon. By scarcity I mean we have never been to Moor Green, or played Solihull either, according to the BFCSA records, although as I trawled the letter S, I was intrigued by a 7-1 victory at Sittingbourne the year that I was born. Till last season that is…… a 2-2 draw where Fonguck and Coulthirst scored…. Although happily Wes is now back at the Hive. Personally stayed at a Solihull hotel when Glamorgan took on Warwickshire in the early Nineties, and a pleasing location it was too.

This is a Football Blog which recently carried an article on Scott Loach. He recalls the remarkable time early in his career when he was called into the England squad, alongside the likes of Gerrard and Rooney. This leads to the classic headline “From breakfast with Gerrard to Battling with Barnet “and is worth a read, as is the tonbridgebee blog elsewhere on the internet.

Wrexham are having to rearrange their fixtures due to this competition, just as we did following Sutton’s progress last year. Add to this list Huddersfield however, where Danny and Nicky have recently docked, as they continue their ascent of the Pyramid System. Speaking on Hospital Radio Barnet, Mr David Balheimer recalled an incident when Danny asked which of his three yellow cards earned him a sending off. He also mused that the brothers won’t have the benefit of an open transfer window, and Terriers are currently struggling at the bottom of the Championship, with just a point when they walked through the doors, so they will have their work cut out.

Our trio have returned from their international call ups. This led me to muse of former Barnet players who have represented their country, and the most recent is seemingly Sammy Cox, who is understandably proud of having captained Guyana, and has re-emerged for a second spell with Hampton and Richmond.. Hopefully this will continue as Samuel is a young man, of just 28 but whilst Jimmy Greaves and Edgar Davids were distinguished stars at the ends of their career, Dougie Freedman and Maik Taylor were on the way up.

In fact Maik played no less than 88 times for Northern Ireland, and his namesake Jack, like Graham Stack now has an Under 21 cap for the Republic. There are others I am sure, but none could have had a more farcical debut than Dougie. Lining up proudly in his Scottish shirt in October 1996, the game in Estonia lasted all of three seconds after a dispute over the quality of the floodlights. After the Talinn chaos, Scotland expected to be awarded a World Cup walkover victory, but instead the rearranged match in Monaco ended in a 0-0 thriller. Only months previously I had seen the Scots play at Wembley, in a rather more memorable atmosphere when England won 2-0 , Gary Mac missed a penalty , the English goals were scored by Shearer and Gascoigne, Gazza typically celebrating with a carefully choreographed dentist chair routine.

On the Only Barnet website there was recently a poll for people to nominate their all-time favourite Barnet goal witnessed live. Nominations included Tony Lynch versus Darlington, Bryan Figg at Wealdstone and Paul Harding v Wycombe, and the latter nominated by the inventively named John Dockers Shorts. I recall two strikes at Swansea’s Vetch Field, one by our current manager, and the other, a speculative shot from Phil Simpson, which inspired the terrace chant “OJ from the halfway line “for some months afterwards. The correct answer to this, in my view, remains Frank Murphy at home to Welling.

James Pattinson had cause to celebrate Australia returning the Ashes. He was possibly equally proud at his gift of a tea urn from his beloved Grimsby Town. You probably read of the two England Test legends honoured in the Theresa May Resignation honours list. Barnet follower Victoria Sharkey was equally delighted that her mum, Jennifer is now an MBE after eighteen years as Executive Secretary to the former Prime Minister.

-First-half goals from Carla Humphrey and Ebony Salmon had the hosts in the driver’s seat heading into the halfway stage, and a stoppage-time Abi Harrison tap-in wrapped up the points for the Robins despite a spirited second-half display from Lee Burch’s side.

Bristol were the brighter of the two sides in the opening stages and immediately put the Bees on the back foot.

Humphrey, who impressed throughout, scored the opener as she blasted across goal from the right-hand side of the box to find the bottom corner, and the hosts dominated the proceedings from then on.

As they constantly tested the Bees defensive line, City were relentless in their search for a second, and with 25 minutes played, they found it.

Showcasing her pace, Salmon took hold on the right-wing before driving past the Bees defender and slotting home at the near post.

Despite all of their first-half pressure, City couldn’t find a third and they took a two-goal lead into the changing rooms.

The Bees put on a much better second-half display and will be disappointed not to have found the net on at least one occasion.

Nikita Whinnett was as lively as ever

and almost fashioned an opening out of nothing. Chasing down her marker, she nicked the ball before finding Brooke Nunn. Nunn then slotted Whinnett through on goal only for a last-ditch challenge to deny the forward.

Whinnett then turned creator as she played a splitting pass into the feet of second-half substitute, Lauren Pickett, but the latter’s strike was straight at the ‘keeper.

The Bees best effort of the half came with just minutes to play as Amelia Hazard crashed an effort into the post following a corner kick, however, Burch’s side were made to pay for their missed opportunities as Harrison punished the Bees with a last-minute tap-in.

London Bees now look ahead to Sunday’s FA Women’s Championship clash with Lewes.
