Volume 49, Issue 1 August5, 2016

District Governor’s Message Fellow Lions,

This is my first Bark message to you as your District

Governor. It is an honor to be able to serve you. Our hope is to

build upon those who served before and leave District 24-C in

good shape for those who will serve after.

A few months ago, I was sitting with my Mom having

coffee. We were telling her all about the upcoming schedule. She

looked at me and said, “What do Lions do?” I was a little stunned.

For more than 17 years, I had served as a Leo Advisor. In addition,

there was all the work that was done with my club. Yet, she didn’t

know what we were about. Granted, she lives a few hours from us.

But, there is a Lions Club in my hometown. I proceeded to tell her

all about the Lions Club and the charge given by Helen Keller. She

responded by saying, “Oh, I never knew.”

The U.S. has seen a declining rate of Lions in the last 50 years. Our club is great. We do many

outstanding things. Yet, folk do not know about us. Evidence of that is in my own family.

L.C.I. encourages us to grow our clubs. How do we do that if folk do not know about us? One of my goals

this year is to encourage all District 24-C clubs to hold a “Bring a Friend” night. Imagine if a club of 25 Lions

brought 25 friends and shared the idea of Lionism with them. That would be 25 more people that would know

about us. Even if they did not feel inclined to join the club, they would know what we do in the community. If 25

guests came to a club meeting and 2-3 joined, that would be wonderful! Think about it fellow Lions!

Each month, I will be sharing a link to a video. This month, we are sharing the link for a Ted Talks video

Have a wonderful August! Watch out for the

Summertime in the Valley

It’s summertime in the valley. All of our clubs are still spending time having family picnics and club

cook outs. I can smell those steaks on the grill now. We are also active with those outdoor projects

before our fall schedules fill up our calendars and the weather forces us inside. It’s not too late to make

this an opportunity to invite a co-worker, neighbor, or family member to one of these events.

Ask someone to join your club cookout as you celebrate all the successes of the past year. Let them

hear what you do and how you serve your community and the world around them. Give them an

opportunity to learn about Lionism in a relax atmosphere as everyone enjoys a great meal outside in

the cool summer breeze. As you share your thoughts about Lionism, remember to share how you felt

when you became a Lion. Make this a low pressure fun environment.

After that great Lions meal, you may want to offer them an opportunity to work with your club on its

next local project. This will give them an opportunity to see how it feels to be a Lion as they do

something great for someone else. Help them find their own Lions Spirit like you did when you first

became a Lion. Help them to want to be a Lion by letting them see how it feels to help someone else.

Before you know it that same Lions Spirit you had will be growing inside this potential Lion. The time

is right to ask them after they have experienced this time of helping others. That Lions Spirit will grow

and grow as they begin to serve those around us.

Just remember no one became a Lion until someone ASKED.

Have a great Lions year!

disorder characterized by underdeveloped optic nerves, an underdeveloped pituitary gland and abnormal

development of structures separating the right and left halves of the brain (U.S. National Library of Medicine

website) that affects 1 in 10,000 newborns. Daylyn is shown below during an evaluation of the eSight glasses.

Also shown below is Daylyn and her Mother accepting the donation from Lions Bill Ewing, Dudley Rinker,

President Michael Morrison and Dave Smith) during a spaghetti dinner fund raising event held at Diane's Diner
