SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL REPORT Our swimming carnival, held last Friday, 14th February, proved to be a very successful one. It was a day of many achievements; from competing in a carnival for the first time, to breaking personal best times. The day would not have been possible without the help of our many parents, grandparents and community members, who assisted in so many ways; from helping with the setup of the pool and surrounds, to timekeeping and packing up at the end of the day. A special thank you must also be made to members of the Barrook Swimming Club for volunteering their time and loaning us their equipment, as well as the Koondrook Swimming Pool Committee for their efforts. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way.

There were many fine efforts throughout the day, with some students persevering to complete an event and many achieving new personal best times. Good sportsmanship was also very evident, with encouraging comments and house groups cheering excitedly. The relays were also hotly contested events. K-2 WATER DAY On Friday, students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 participated in some water activities while the rest of the school went to the swimming carnival. The students were also joined by infant students from Wakool Burraboi. The students played a variety of games such as musical chairs with sponges, drip, drip squeeze (duck, duck, goose) and had a lot of fun running through the sprinklers on the oval. The students then talked about water safety near the river and also sun safety. They completed a piece of artwork of Sid the Seagull who tells us all about how to be sun smart, “Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide.”

OUR BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM Barham PS is committed to ensuring every student is known, valued and cared for so they can participate positively and safely at school. This commitment drives our improvement processes around teaching, leading, learning and partnerships. As a school, we devise systems that will promote positive, respectful and safe behaviour that enables every student to be an effective learner and citizen.

As a staff, we work to provide instruction and support that addresses the need of each and every child. Some students need additional supports and time to learn what is expected of them at school. As a school, we implement adjustments and tailored interventions that help each student to make learning progress.

Partnerships with parents are essential, and the school will work with you to ensure your child is developing their potential for respectful, positive and rewarding social interactions, and progress in academic learning appropriate to their level of development.

Our Behaviour Management and Support system are important components of our overall commitment to Student Welfare and Wellbeing. Discipline processes are in place to assist your child to self-monitor and self-manage their behaviour and show behaviours that are expected by school and the NSW DoE.

The School’s Discipline Flowchart details the steps classroom teachers and executive staff will take to manage behaviour issues at school. It is attached for your information (on Page 7).

This Flowchart is the current version of our school discipline process. Students reflect on their behaviour with a teacher or member of the executive. Students use a template designed to have them identify their behaviour, when more positive choices could have been made, the challenges they face in making choices to meeting the behaviour expectations of the school, and ways for them to make positive choices in the future (including the support they may need do to this). The school’s process aims to provide support from the school and parents so that students are equipped with knowledge and strategies that will help them make positive behaviour choices in the future. We want your feedback and input into our Positive Behaviour System. You can have your say in one or more of the following ways:

1. Attend the focus group on Wednesday 26th February 2020 at 2pm

2. Call the school 3. Come to the next P&C meeting on the

The school is also currently reviewing its Reward system, looking to fine tune the Recognition and Celebration system so that the awards and rewards are valued, and effectively promote the school’s core values and expected behaviours. If you would like to give some feedback about the reward system, you can contact Roslyn Buchanan at school, come to the focus group on 26th February or come along to the next P&C meeting where there will be a chance to make comments.

THE IMPACT OF PRIVACY LAW ON THE INFORMATION PARENTS CAN BE PROVIDED ABOUT OTHER PARENT’S CHILDREN

Our school holds information about our students. Some of this information is highly sensitive.

The way this information is collected, used, disclosed and secured by our school is subject to NSW legislation including the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998, Health Records and Information Protection

Act 2002 and the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998.

These laws limit the circumstances in which your child’s information can be disclosed to other parents. They also limit the circumstances in which you can be provided with information about action the school has taken in relation to other people’s children.

This means, for example, you may not be provided with complete details of the action the school has taken in relation to a student who has engaged in unacceptable behaviour that has impacted on your child.

You should not assume that no action has been taken because you cannot be provided with information about what the school has done to deal with an issue relating to your child’s interaction with another student.

Our school takes inappropriate behaviour from students very seriously and responds to that behaviour consistent with the school’s student discipline and welfare procedures.

If you would like further information about the school’s general approach to inappropriate behaviour from students please contact Mrs Roslyn Buchanan, (Principal Rel.) on 03 5453 2133.

REPORT BY MATILDA HOLLINS – MURRAY RIVER COUNCIL YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD RECIPIENT FOR 2020

Before Christmas I received a letter in the mail to say that I had been nominated by someone in the community for the Murray River Council Young Citizen of the Year award for 2020. The councillors looked at my nomination, along with the other applicants and decided I was the winner. Mum received a phone call while we were at Lake Charm telling us I had won. I couldn’t believe it! I was very nervous and excited all at once. On Australia Day we attended the breakfast in Barham at Riverside Park and I was presented with my certificate. I was very surprised at how many people were there to see the awards handed out. I chickened out and

decided not to speak after Mr Alan Mathews gave me my award and spoke about why I had won this award. I would like to say thank you to the person who nominated me, I still can’t believe I won. Thank you to the friends and family who came on the day and to the school for allowing me to cut my hair at school and help raise money.

DID YOU BUY YOUR CHILD A SMART TOY, SMART PHONE, TABLET, E-SITE MEMBERSHIP OR SOMETHING SIMILAR FOR CHRISTMAS? Children and teenagers are going online and using social media with increasing frequency. While many enjoy their online experiences, there are risks involved. Parents, schools and the broader community need to work together to help keep children’s online experiences safe. The Commonwealth Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner has developed a resource for parents – iPARENT – which helps parents deal with the connected devices in their children’s lives. iPARENT – found at https://esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent - provides facts and statistics about Australian children online, managing technology in the home and strategies that can be used by parents to keep children safe online. A parent’s guide to online safety can be downloaded from this site. A range of other useful information is also available from the website. For example parents can access information about cyberbullying including:

• how to talk to their child about cyberbullying;:

• what to do if their child is being cyber bullied or is engaging in cyberbullying behaviour themselves; and

• sources of professional support and help.

The website also provides information about how parents and children can report unwanted online contact and/or inappropriate, offensive or illegal content online. Finally, if someone you know is adversely affected by an online experience, free and confidential advice, assistance and support is available from:

• the Kids Helpline (ages 5 to 25) on 1800 55 1800; and/or

• eheadspace (ages 12 to 25) on 1800 650 890; and/or

• Lifeline on 13 11 14. Of course if you need urgent assistance ring 000.
