Heritage HillsLandscape Committee

The Landscape Committee continues to work hard monitoring the care and maintenance of our many miles of common area and the general landscape conditions throughout our community. We assemble with our Management Team, D.T.E. representatives and our Board Liaison on the first Thursday of every month at 10 AM. Our discussions include all issues involving common area maintenance and irrigation.

There are some lawn issues on the property. We know that the common areas and some of the residents are having some issues with Zoysia turf. D.T.E. and some of our residents have commissioned in-depth soil studies from the University of Florida. Their results vary slightly, but common threads in both studies show issues with soil/sand composition beneath the turf, large and small patch fungus in some areas, non-treatable nematodes, other pests and irrigation problems. Several of these issues fall outside of D.T.E.’s contract with our H.O.A. and become the responsibility of the home owner. In an effort to improve conditions, some residents have had their lawns aerated and Command Soil applied at their own expense. The jury is still out on the value and long-term benefits of these treatments. It may take some time to see any changes in these lawns. We will keep you posted. Be assured that this problem has the attention of the board, management and residents all looking toward a resolution and positive outcome.

We continue to find more and more dead and dying Queen Palm and fir/pine trees both in established and newly planted stock. D.T.E. has informed us that the Queen Palms are contracting Fusarium Wilt and the fir/pine trees Diplodia. Both diseases, which are new to Central Florida, are not treatable and are very contagious tree to tree. Dead or dying trees should be removed as quickly as possible. In the common areas, the H.O.A. removes trees as they are identified. If you have a tree at issue on your property please contact D.T.E. by submitting a work order. Mike will come out and give you a diagnosis. If you wish you may contact your own arborist to secure a plan of action. These diseases spread quickly and will kill even healthy trees in a short period of time. Newer homes or villas under one year old may have a tree warranty from Lennar. Contact their “customer service” to find out.

The parking lots in front of the clubhouse have been sealed and stripped. D.T.E. crews have completed the removal of dead or dying plants, replanting, mulching and detailing of the beds in front of and around the clubhouse.

There have been several irrigation issues which have come up since our last report. The board is doing its best to bring all well operations up to standard. Well A has had a complete cleaning and relining. B and C wells were also down and under repair. Residents have also noticed additional manual watering is being done along Heritage Hills Blvd. by D.T.E. crews. This action is allowed by the City of Clermont because of our continuing well issues. If you have questions about common area irrigation please contact our office.

Now that the clubhouse project is complete, the Landscape Committee will be looking into areas on the property where landscaping can be improved, map them out, prioritize them, suggest solutions, secure estimates and present them to the board for their consideration. We want to help make Heritage Hills the most beautiful community in the area.

Last month board members suspended the weekly “Gator Ride Alongs”. D.T.E.’s inability to address, execute and rectify deficiencies listed on the weekly “Punch List” provided to them was the catalyst. We hope to be back on the road soon.

If you have landscape questions or concerns please send in a work order to [email protected] or call 352-385-7227 Ext.0. Please do not stop and speak to the D.T.E. Account Manager or crew on site to discuss your issues. This will not solve your problem and leaves no paper trail to track. Steve Meyer and the Landscape Committee are kept up to date with D.T.E.’s receipt and execution of the work orders submitted each week. Thank you for your input, cooperation and understanding.

HOA Board of DirectorsGreetings from your HOA Board of Directors. First, we want to give

hearty congratulations to our three newly elected members. Dave Mandell and Robert Tinari who will each serve a term of 3 years and David Alexander who will serve a term of 1 year. We also appreciate all who participated in the election process and were willing to serve on the board. Our community benefits when good people step up to volunteer their time. In that spirit, we want to thank Eric Sorkin for his dedicated service and support these past years.

Our new board members will join Stu Kinniburgh and Felix J. DeMuro to make the five-person board that serves the community over the next year.

Also, at the organizational meeting of the board following the election, the new board voted to install Felix J. DeMuro as President, Dave Mandell as Vice President, Bob Tinari as Treasurer, and Stu Kinniburgh as Secretary. If residents have concerns or questions, the most efficient way of addressing them is to go directly to the community manager. The board gets regular updates from management on all community issues and schedules appropriate topics for discussion during scheduled public meetings.

Since our last note to you, the board has been working on getting one of the wells located off Heritage Hills Boulevard repaired. Our contractor for wells has been an awesome partner for the community in this regard, doing his best to keep repair prices low and yet make the long-term changes we need to keep the wells from being a constant drain to our resources and effort. As of this writing, all wells are up and operational.

This is also the time of year that accentuates frustration with lawns that look dead or dying. We have had Down To Earth evaluate the turf and the soil, and we have also had the University of Florida come out and do an independent study of selected lawns. In each evaluation, we have learned that there is no consistent problem with the soil, sand or chemicals that can be remedied. Many turf care professionals report that problems with Florida lawns often result from either too much or too little water. The amount of water for lawns in Heritage Hills is managed by the City of Clermont. If you believe that your irrigation system may not be working properly, please notify the community manager.

DTE has recommended that we advise you that adding your own nutrients or chemicals may help in some cases, but it can also harm turf growth, particularly if something is added that conflicts with or compounds what is already on your lawn.

Down to Earth has agreed to work closely with the community to repair turf problems where possible. As frustrating as lawn care may be for some residents, please know that the board, management and our landscapers are working to try and get all turf in our community looking healthy. Be sure to register any concerns or complaints with the Down to Earth help line or notify the community manager.

June first marked the beginning of the 2019 Hurricane Season, which has been predicted to be slightly above average. According to the Hurricane Center, a total of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes are expected this season. This is an excellent time to reacquaint yourselves with the steps you should take to protect yourself in the event that a hurricane makes landfall and comes toward Clermont. Last year, the RAC, along with several volunteers, canvassed Heritage Hills and knocked on every door handing out flyers detailing what to do and how to prepare for a hurricane. Along with the flyer the RAC distributed a red sheet of paper to place in your front window, or in the front of your villa, IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE from your neighbors. Please remember, dial 911 for any life-

Resident Advisory Council (RAC)threatening emergencies. If you did not receive the flyer or the red sheet, please check with the concierge to obtain a copy.

Remember to keep non-perishable emergency supplies on hand, a flashlight, including extra batteries, candles (and matches). Check to make sure you have a good supply of any prescription medicines. Keep a three-day supply of drinking water, along with food that does not require refrigeration or cooking.

This would also be an excellent time to review your insurance policies to understand what you are covered for, and more importantly, what you are NOT covered for. We also suggest you take this time to make an inventory of your personal property and use your cell phone to photograph anything of value or importance to you.

Dress a Girl had an outstanding month of May thanks to our Ladies Tea and Fashion Show Helton the afternoon of May 8. Ten tables were set up in the ballroom and 82 ladies enjoyed finger sandwiches, scones, mini desserts, and tea made by our DAG planning committee. Each table’s hostess chose a theme for her table and the ballroom was an amazing display of their talents and creativity. Hostesses were: Carol Krause, Lynda Kimmelton, Judy Ricaud, Martha Levin, Eula Gesiorski, Pat Ketchabaw, Peggy Gosselin, Helen Ebaugh, Rosemarie Wilburn, and Linda Smith. The fashions for the show were provided by Chico’s Winter Garden store. Each model wore one casual outifit and one dress up outfit.

DAG hopes to sponsor another tea next spring. So, if you missed it this year, watch for our announcements next year in the newsletter. On that note, DAG wishes to thank all of our members whose work made this event such a great success. But, most of all, we extend our deepest appreciation to this very generous community for their support of our goal to put a dress and a smile on the face of a little girl in need. Thank you!

On June 5 at 10 AM, we will have our next dress collection in the ballroom. We are always excited at collection time to get that total dress count that we send to Lake Nona. Come and see what we do! Don’t forget to check our display case in the clubhouse.

DAG meetings are taking a summer break, but the sewing will go on. Our next meeting will be September 5 at 10 AM in the ballroom. New members are always welcome and you don’t need to sew to participate.

Have a wonderful summer! DAG

This is a social group that enjoys working on their own projects as well as projects for donations to various charities. The group is self-guided with various skills of crochet, knitting and needlework. If you run into problems on a project, there are women (we welcome men as well) here with years of experience and expertise who can help you out. There is no one in charge, so come, stay awhile and leave when you wish. We keep a roster of the people who are in the group regularly and wish to be included in the list. If you would like to be included, please email me your information.

We anticipate one holiday party a year just to have fun and be social. For those interested in donating their projects, there are some

“members” working on projects for various charitable organizations. In addition, if you have yarn, paraphernalia, books that you would like to donate, we would welcome them for everyone’s enjoyment. If anyone has contact information on local charities who want or need handmade items, please let me know so I can get the information out to our group. If you would like to talk to someone about our group, please contact me. Happy Hooking!!

Want to try something new? Come to our ceramics class on the first and third Thursday afternoons at 1. We have our own kiln for firing your finished pieces. In the next few months, we will be learning two new techniques from our teacher, Wiley.

We have basic paints available ($2 charge per class as HOA does not pay for our supplies). Other more exotic paints can be ordered from Wiley.

If you are interested in trying ceramics, please visit Wiley at his shop to pick out pieces to work on, or visit his website - www.artzyzone.com - to pre-order your pieces. You can order bisque pieces ready to paint, or greenware which you clean, fire, then paint. Greenware is generally half the price of the bisque pieces.

If you have any questions, please contactSherrie Schoening at 614-214-1201.Next classes will be June 6 and 20.

Hope to see you there!

Want To Make Member Voting Easier?

Come by the concierge desk and ask about opting in to vote online! It is quicker and more efficient, and best of all it saves costs to the association and makes member vote meetings minutes long instead of hours long by voting online!

The Italian-American Club proudly donated to The Beta House of Orlando its proceeds from their 2nd annual Night at the Races charity event. They increased last year’s donation by $300 plus dollars!

Heritage Hills Library

Heritage Hills • June 2019 • 15

Heritage Hills is fortunate to have residents that are interested in and support our resident library. The same volunteers have attended to the library for several years. We appreciate your letting us know your opinions on the library when you see us busily working to keep the library in order.

Due to space limitations, we have room for current magazines only and books no older than 2009 whether they are fiction or non fiction and are in good condition.

For donations of items we are unable to take, Cooper Memorial Library would be happy to receive your books. The books are a huge source of fundraising for the library. Their book sale takes place in February. We encourage you to bring older books to Cooper Memorial Library located at 2525 Oakley Seaver Drive, Clermont, Florida 34711, phone 352-536-2275. The library is closed on Sunday. From Monday to Thursday, the library is open from 9 AM to 7 PM. On Friday and Saturday, the library is open from 9 AM to 1 PM and the library is closed on Sunday. The Cooper Memorial Library would appreciate any donations EXCEPT for magazines, videotapes, out of date technical books such as tax books, etc. Other books in good condition are welcomed. All proceeds from their book sale go back to the library community.

Please do not shelf or re-shelf the books. There is an order to the library. As we mainly stock fiction books, they are arranged alphabetically by author and not by subject matter. Biographies and help, craft and other assorted books can be found on the top shelves at this time.

Return your books in the baskets provided. You may also leave your donated books and other materials in the baskets. Anyone with suggestions or comments, feel free to contact me. If you would like to see changes such as the location of the library, a larger library that houses the coffee machines, etc., please email me. Our community is for everyone’s benefit so it is important to let your thoughts and preferences be known.

HomeopathicStudy Group

How does Homeopathy differ fromconventional medicine?

Very simply, homeopathic medicine stimulates the body to recover itself. Let’s look at an example: the common cough.

First, all symptoms, no matter how uncomfortable, represent the body’s attempt to restore itself to health. Instead of looking at symptoms as something wrong which must be set right, Homeopathy sees symptoms as signs of the way a body attempts to help itself. Therefore, instead of trying to stop the cough with suppressants as conventional medicine does, a homeopathic medicine will stimulate the ailing body to restore itself.

Second, Homeopathy looks at the totality of all symptoms presented. We each experience a cough in our own unique way. Yet conventional medicine acts as if all coughs are alike. It offers a series of suppressive drugs - something to suppress the cough, something to dry the mucus, something to lower the histamine level, something to ease falling asleep.

Homeopathy, on the other hand, looks for the one substance that will cause similar symptoms in a healthy person. The person with a cough characterized by being worse when breathing cold air and sounding like a deep bark will need a quite different medicine than the person whose cough is loose in the morning, dry in the evening and better when sitting up in bed. Homeopathy characterizes both as coughs, but they are different illnesses in the individuals, and therefore require different treatment matched to each person.

Wouldn’t you prefer a system of medicine that treats you as an individual? Medicine that is gentle, safe and effective? Come learn with us and feel better. We meet first and third Tuesdays. We welcome you to come and jump right into our study at any time!

Our main text, Homeopathic Remedies by Asa Hershoff, is available from Amazon.com for $12.77. It is helpful to have your own copy so you can read in preparation for our monthly study group meetings, as well as allow you take notes and/or highlight as you wish. The book is a well-organized introduction to Homeopathy AND it is a helpful reference for good health and self-care at home. The Healing Echo is available from Amazon.com for $17.71.

Law of Similars

Homeopathy is a system of medicine developed by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, over 200 years ago. Since that time, it has spread to every country of the world. It is based on the Law of Similars, that is, like cures like. This means that a substance given in a large crude dosage will produce specific symptoms, but when administered in an extremely minute dose will stimulate the body’s reactive processes to remove these same symptoms. For example, Ipecacuanha (Ipecac), if taken in a large dose will produce vomiting. When taken in an extremely small homeopathic dose (prepared by a series of dilutions and successions), it will aid the body in eliminating the vomiting. It will even stop the gagging which frequently follows a coughing spell. There are more that 2000 homeopathic medicines, most available over-the-counter. Many acute ailments can be treated at home, while chronic illness may require the help of a homeopathic practitioner. Come learn with us about safe, gentle and effective Homeopathy. We welcome you to join us, jumping right into study with us at any time. Our main text, Homeopathic Remedies by Asa Hershoff, is available from Amazon.com for $12.77. It is helpful to have your own copy so you can read in preparation for our monthly study group meetings, as well as allow you take notes and/or highlight as you wish. Has the stage been calling you? When you see one of the Heritage Hills Players productions, have you heard that little whisper, “you could do this too?” My friends, it is time to step up on the stage and let your inner actor shine!

The Heritage Hills Players are proud and excited to present a new round of acting classes in June and July. These four classes, taught by theater experts, will help you build the skill and confidence you’ve been seeking to step out on that stage and show your “chops!” This suite of four, two-hour classes will give you all the essentials from Stage Basics 101 to Working Scenes and Monologues. Afraid you can’t memorize a scene? You will learn easy to apply tricks and tips! Surprise yourself with what you can accomplish!

Each class is designed to build on the previous class so that you learn and master a little at the time. Classes are fun, and we are keeping them small (no more than 20 participants max) so that you get maximum opportunity for practice and feedback in a safe and supportive learning environment.

The cost for the full, 4 lesson suite program is only $50 per person (includes tax); class size is limited so register as soon as you can at the concierge desk, this program will max out quickly. Below are the dates and agenda. All classes are held in the ballroom from 7- 9 PM. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.

Schedule and Content:June 19: Stage Basics - learn the essentials and get

comfortable with being on the stage, memorizing lines.

June 26: Understanding Scene Development - working with and developing characters, developing your style.

July 10: Playing Scenes - different methods to interpret scenes and monologues, how to rehearse and play out a scene.

July 17: Fun With Improvisation! - turn yourself loose!

Just Say“YES!”

Wii BowlingThe spring Wii Bowl Tournament is now official. Bob and Tina McAreavey

have defended their title by winning back to back HH club championships! It was an exciting end to the spring season as the Hartzells’ needed three wins from the McAreaveys’ in the second last week of the season, to force a playoff with the defending champs. And the Hartzells’ did not disappoint. But in the last week playoff it was the McAreaveys’ who repaid the favor, taking the Hartzells’ out and claiming their second club championship. The team of Sasha Griffin and Taylor Nardolillo had a hard charge in the end but could not overcome their slow start to the season. Congratulations to all bowlers! We will keep you posted on the timing of the next tournament. Thanks to all who participated.

I LoveNew York

Do you enjoy meeting new friends? Do you enjoy social evenings with friends? Do you just want to sit back and enjoy an evening of fun? Would you like to go to dinner? Better still, how about dinner and a show?

THAT’S THE I LOVE NEW YORK GROUP and everyone is invited to join. You do not have to be from New York. All that’s necessary is the desire to join in an activity that you want to participate in. As long as it’s something not restricted in size, you’re free to invite friends and relatives that do not reside in Heritage Hills.

To join, I need your name, address, phone number and email to add you to my list. It’s as simple as that and we’d be delighted to include you. April was a busy month where there were two shows and planned dinner locations. May we had a breather but check here for future activities.

We continue to enjoy the productions at the Garden Theater in Winter Garden, due to the excellent shows and the proximity to Heritage Hills as well as the variety of local restaurants we are able to enjoy nearby. Look for future announcements that may come by email first.

Congrats to the recent winners of the “closest to the pin” contests: Dennis Hartzell won at Forest Lake – no winner on the back nine (4/15), Jimmy Blau and Larry Gross won at West Orange CC (4/22) and Dennis Hartzell (is this guy for real?? ?) won on the front nine at Swiss Fairways – no winner on the back nine (4/6).

Did you notice that the winner for closest to the pin was not mentioned above for Green Valley on April 29? That’s because it deserves a special place in history (and in this article) because PAT MARITATO GOT A HOLE IN ONE (!!!) on the front nine and, wait for it…he also got CTTP on the back nine! If you see Pat you might want to congratulate him and ask him why he didn’t treat us all to a drink in the clubhouse afterwards. This writer was ready for a free drink! We are all very happy for Pat and maybe a little jealous.

Come out and join us! For more information, please call Barry Morlachetta (304-654-8485), Tom Krinock (610-529-0595) or Eula Gesiorski (281-705-9013). See you on the course!!____________________________________________

June 6 • 1 PM • Library, ClubhouseThe Orphan’s Tale by Pam Jenoff

Reviewers found The Orphan’s Tale a powerful novel of two women’s friendship set in a traveling circus during World War II.

Teenager Noa has been cast out in disgrace after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier and forced to give up her baby. Living above a small rail station which she cleans to earn her keep, Noa discovers a boxcar containing dozens of Jewish infants bound for a concentration camp. Reminded of the child that was taken from her, she snatches one of the babies and flees into the snowy night.

Noa finds refuge with a German circus, but she must learn the flying trapeze act so she can blend in undetected. At first, she is spurned by the resentment of the lead aerialist, Astrid. Eventually, the women forge a powerful bond. But as the facade that protects them proves increasingly tenuous, Noa and Astrid must decide whether their friendship is enough to save one another - or if the secrets that burn between them will destroy everything.

Pam Jenoff is the author of several novels, including the international bestseller The Kommandant’s Girl and, just out, The Lost Girls of Paris.

We invite you to join us each first Thursday for a fun and lively discussion - no matter what the book or genre!
