SHARE THE BEAUTY OF YOUR COMMUNITY WITH A FRESH AIR

CHILD THIS SUMMERCAPITAL DISTRICT - This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoying the pure joys of summer in your own backyard! Thousands of volun-teer host families in rural, suburban, and small town com-munities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Vol-unteer Host Family program. The Fresh Air Fund, an indepen-dent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer expe-riences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-filled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

SOUTHERN ADIRONDACK ATA MARTIAL ARTS

MALTA - Let’s Get Started - Beginner, Intermediate and Ad-vanced programs. New beginners start class every month. Each new student starts slowly and progresses at his or her own rate of speed. You should begin by attending at least twice per week. Each class lasts about thirty minutes. Don’t be concerned if you’re out of shape or think the techniques

look too difficult, you’ll be in class with other beginners like yourself. While there is little doubt that most Americans would like to have the skill of a Black Belt, there still exists a huge amount of misinformation about the martial art. We hope that your time here will have provided you with some sensible reasons for studying Taekwondo, America’s most popular form of martial art. Thanks for taking time to learn about us and we really hope that you decide to join us. It was once said, “The hardest part of any journey is the taking of the first step”. Congratulations you have already taken it. For more information call the Malta Community center at 518-899-4411, or visit online at www.maltaparksrec.com.

The pro-gram will take place during the dates of October 8-10, and 14-17, 9:30-11:25am and 11:25am to 1:20pm dai-ly. Students will explore local Native American history in a variety of interactive ways. At the Three Sisters garden, children grind corn in stone mortars and learn about the importance of squash, beans and corn in Haude-nosaunee culture and diet. While spending time with a Mohawk storyteller, stu-dents learn important les-sons about what it was like to live in a community and how Native American tradi-tions influence our modern government. At our Inves-tigation Station, students have time to experience, analyze and process new concepts and information. They will also view original, centuries old arrowheads and pottery shards and dis-cuss what they can learn from these artifacts. Stu-dents will be exposed to a variety of new vocabulary and have the opportunity to experience these new terms in context. This program supports the Common Core State Standards Initiatives and additional resources are available for extended class-room learning experiences. Program fee is $6 per person from member schools and

Elvis

Lancaster Litter

Doc Kittens

These guys waited several weeks to transport up to the North. They finally got health certificates and are good to go after being bumped a couple of times. They are about 12 weeks old. They are vet checked, up to date on shots and good to go.

Elvis is a 3-4 year old Quaker Parrot. He talks, meows and comes to his name and more. He comes with

his own cage, carrying case and accessories. He also like to be out of his cage for about 2 hours a day. His owner found herself traveling too much with work

and felt it was better that he find a home where they could spend more time with him. He should go to an experienced, bird friendly family. If anyone is

interested in adopting Elvis please call the shelter at 518-654-6220 or come by the shelter to meet him.

These babies were found by one of the veterinarians down

south and he took them in. They are about 9 weeks old and have been given extra

special attention from the vet. They have had first shots, fe-

Even though I haven’t seen any at my place, I’m hearing that the Japanese Beetles are starting to emerge from the soil to begin their feasting. In an artist’s eye, the Japanese Beetle could be considered an attractive specimen with its shiny, coppery-bronze wing covers and metallic-green highlights. Unfortunately, this color scheme isn’t attractive to birds or any other insect predators so, we’re left to battle these destructive, leaf eating beetles on our own. There are few things that can send gardeners into a state of insecticidal rage quicker that the sight of a group of Japanese Beetles chowing down the petals of a favorite rose bush or crop of beans.

Our fi rst line of defense is Japanese Beetle traps. These yellow traps with their fl oral and sex lures are almost irritable to hungry, sex-crazed Japanese Beetles. The trick to using beetle traps is to not place them IN your garden but 15’ outside the garden. You don’t want to lure the beetles into the garden after all. If you home is somewhat isolated, traps can be quite effective. In the suburbs, with many lawns adjoining and surrounding yours, the use of traps can actually increase the number of beetles in your gardens. In this situation, spraying may be the only solution. In the past, Sevin was the insecticide of choice. Recently, however a product called “Eight” has come on the market and looks as though it will do as good a job as Sevin but with a lower toxicity (making it safer to use). As with Sevin, Eight is available in dust or liquid sprays. While Sevin required that the insects eat it, Eight kills on contact and remains effective for a couple of weeks after (or until rain washes it off the leaves). Try to avoid using Sevin or Eight dusts on plants with lots of fl owers since bees visiting these fl owers may carry the dust back to the hive with their pollen deliveries and harm the hive.

In the past we all knew to treat for grubs “in the fall”. Recent developments in insecticidal chemistry have changed all that. Now we want to treat for grubs as soon as we see Japanese Beetles in our area. I wrote about all this in an earlier column but, I imagine most of you need another reminder so I’ll quote myself:

“ What’s the best thing to use? In my opinion it will be one of two products. Either the chemical Imidacloprid (sold as Season Long Grub Control with Merit) or the biological con-trol (non-chemical) Milky Spore Disease.

Let’s start with Merit: Ideally, you’ll want to apply Merit in July and WATER IT IN. By now you must think I’m totally nuts. I just explained how there aren’t any grubs in July be-cause they are all in the beetle form eating the beans and roses. Rest assured, I’m not nuts. The reason Merit needs to be applied so early is that it needs some lead time to get absorbed into the roots of the grass where it remains waiting for the grubs. As soon as the grubs hatch they begin to eat the roots of the grass. POW! They die. That’s the beauty of Merit. It can’t miss since it’s in the food of the grubs. Properly applied and watered-in Merit will kill 98% of the grubs that hatch. No need to lose your lawn…no need to treat again in spring either. Don’t worry, your neighbors grubs will stay in his yard. Grubs aren’t much for traveling.

Better yet there’s Milky Spore Disease. Milky Spore is a disease that only affects white grubs. It won’t hurt earthworms or even a bird that eats a grub that has the disease. Milky spore needs to be applied

two or three times a year for three years to reach “epidemic” proportions in the soil. After that the grubs that hatch into your lawn will contract the disease then die reproducing the disease and spreading it throughout the soil. Milky Spore is more expensive up front but will last at least 20 years once it takes hold. Not a bad investment really. Over the years it will actually save you money to say nothing about the time you won’t need to spend spreading chemicals and running sprinklers.”

Remember that? Another reminder: Don’t count on rain to properly water-in your grub control. A soon as the product is out of the bag, oxygen and sunlight will break down Merit in a matter of hours and Milky Spore is killed if left exposed to sunlight for too long. Put a tuna or cat food can on the treated area and don’t shut the sprinklers off until the can is full. THAT’S how much water it takes to allow these grubs controls to be effective! Make this the year you GET WITH THE PROGRAM. Our lawns are looking their best right now . Down let those grubs get the jump on you and destroy the healthy roots system this spring’s rain made possible Thanks for the read.

Yukon is a 9-year old Rottweiler possibly mixed with Bernese Mountain Dog. He is very sociable and loves people of all ages. He often smiles at his foster mom (a full, teeth-baring grin that is definitely a smile). He will occasionally approach strangers and smile at them too! He is mellow but does likes to play. Marius is an eight month old charming, lovable kitten. He and his sisters were rescued from a barn trying to survive the brutal cold of the winter. His foster mom spent many days

slowly rehabilitating him. He has gone from a frightened feral kitten to the sweetest, most affectionate one of his litter. Marius enjoys sleeping on top of your head, lulling you to sleep with his boisterous purring. He also loves to rub his

face against yours; making sure to give you plenty of kisses. Marius needs a home where he can receive all the affection he deserves (and it is quite a lot!) He enjoys playing with cats of all ages and gets along well with dogs. Marius is neutered

and up to date on his shots.

Addie is a lovely, long haired tortie cat that loves to be near her person. She really enjoys a frisky romp chasing her toys — a crinkly pink crescent moon is her favorite, tossing it up

in the air she makes her own fun and she is also training her foster dad to fetch. Addie likes to sit in your lap 1-2 hours in the evening watching baseball. (She may be a Yankees fan.) Addie’s motto is: If there’s a lap, I’m on it! At 9 years old

TIRE MAINTENANCE IS KEY TO SAFE

SUMMER DRIVING

(NAPS)—Tires are the only thing between you and the road, so it’s imperative mo-torists stay on top of tire maintenance. Proper tire maintenance is important all year, but especially in the summer months as the temperature starts heating up and the frequency of tire blowouts increases.

Improper tire care contrib-utes to 195 fatalities and 6,300 injuries each year, according to the National

Highway Traffi c Safety Ad-ministration. The agency also estimates that about 11,000 tire-related crash-es occur annually. Simply checking your tire pressure can help you and your pas-sengers stay safe during your next summer journey.

To get the most from your tires this summer, here are fi ve maintenance tips from the world’s largest indepen-dent tire and wheel retail-er—Discount Tire:

1. Get Pressure Right— Low tire pressure can decrease fuel economy. Tires may lose up to one pound PSI (per square inch) of air pres-sure per month. The specifi c

infl ation pressure number may be found on the vehicle placard located inside the driver’s door. Don’t forget those trailer tires. Checking the tire pressure for boat, travel and utility trailers is as important as your car or truck.

2. Don’t Overload—Over-loading your vehicle or trailer decreases fuel econ-omy due to increased cargo weight. Handling, control and braking are also nega-tively impacted.

3. Rotate Before You Go—Regular rotation helps achieve uniform tire wear and improves road perfor-mance. Tires rotated every

5,000 miles have longer life and will help maximize your tire investment.

4. Straighten Up—Proper wheel alignment provides safe, predictable vehicle control and helps tires wear evenly and last longer. If your tires squeal when you turn or if you notice your steering wheel veers to one side while driving straight, it’s time to get your wheels re-aligned.

5. Bald Isn’t Beautiful—Lack of tread aff ects the tire’s abil-ity to grip the road, especial-ly in wet conditions. Make sure tires don’t have uneven wear, which indicates some-thing is wrong with the tire. High or low spots or unusu-ally smooth areas may de-crease traction and increase the risk of road accidents.

“Maintaining tire pressure is one of the most critical things motorists can do to improve road safety while getting the most from their tires,” said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “Improperly in-fl ated tires lead to decreased steering and braking control as well as excessive tire wear and fuel consumption. Tak-ing fi ve minutes each month to inspect your tires will go a long way in keeping you and your passengers safe.”

A Five-Minute Fix

Checking tire pressure and tread is easy and can pay dividends when it comes to fuel economy and handling. Don’t go by appearances. Use a tire gauge to check the pressure since a tire can be 50 percent underinfl ated but still not appear fl at.

Make it a habit to check tire pressure every month and always before a long jour-ney. Use the vehicle manu-facturer’s recommended tire pressure and don’t forget to check the spare and trailer tires.

“Most people forget to check the pressure in the spare tire and come to fi nd that when they need it, the spare is fl at,” said Marrufo. “This simple check could keep you from a costly tow if you get stuck with a fl at.”

Road trippers should also check tire tread depth by using the “penny test.” Insert a penny upside down into the tread. If you see Abe Lin-coln’s entire head, it’s time to replace the tire.

MAINTENANCE PAYS

(NAPS)—Many drivers fi nd that if they want to make their car last, it pays to put it fi rst. Taking good care of your car means you are more likely to avoid problems, both now, while you’re driv-ing it, and later, when you sell it.

To improve the life of your vehicle and its price at resale, it’s a good idea to get it ser-viced regularly. The car will not only run better, it will be highlighted on a Carfax Re-port as a “well maintained” vehicle. Keep track of the

service history so you can prove you did the right thing to prospective buyers.

To help, you can get remind-ers about upcoming service from the free myCarfax mo-bile app. Subscribers also learn of any open recalls on their cars.

To fi nd local service shops and get tips on keeping your car well maintained, visit www.mycarfax.com.
