Community Emergency Corps & Toys for TotsBALLSTON SPA - During this upcoming holiday season Com-munity Emergency Corps of Ballston Spa will again be an of-ficial drop off point for donations for the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. This campaign has reached out and assisted needy and deserving children all around the capital region for over 45 years. Without this won-derful program, children in our communities would not have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays the way they deserve. With these trying times and the recession still looming over this holiday season, we are in an even bigger need of support from our Capital Region community. We have already started to re-ceive donations and will be accepting toys at our station at 78 Thompson St., Ballston Spa, NY until December 15th. You can drop them off anytime, days or evenings. If we are not at the building due to answering emergency calls, we hope you will return at another time with your contribution. As a reminder, toys collected in this area are redistributed right back into this area to those in need. For further information or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Ray Otten, Executive Director of CEC, at 885-1478.

I hope you all are fi nding the time to get outside and enjoy the show that Mother Na-ture provides this time of year. Of course, along with that show, comes the annual chore of rak-ing leaves. When you fi nd yourself feeling overwhelmed by this chore, it might help to remind yourself that the topsoil we need to grow our food, fl owers and trees comes from eons and eons of leaves that grow, fall and decay, gradually creating the soil we take so for granted. Because our viewpoint is so limited (after all we only live for a mere 80 years or so), it’s easy to overlook this miraculous process. If you’re a gardener, the leaves should be considered a resource rather than a nuisance. Think about it. Here you have all this material that the trees pulled from deep in the soil and used to create leaves. The elements found in the leaves have been refi ned as they passed from the soil through the trees and now these elements have been deposited on the surface. The beauty of all this is that the material contained in these leaves can be recycled and reused by other plants. Yes, I’m talking about composting. You can turn the leaves directly into your vegetable garden or compost them in a bin with other vegetable matter. I notice that some of you cleverly compost them in the woods behind your house or across the street. Even if you let the town col-lect them, they’ll be composted by the foresighted folks at the county farm. Those of you with mulching mowers will compost them right back into the lawn. Waste not, want not.
This is the time of year that I like to collect seeds from any annuals that I want to repro-duce next year. At the end of a dry day, I collect the mature seedpods from some of my favorites and put them into envelopes for storage. Cosmos, cleome, marigolds and my purple amaranthus all go into the collection. I also gather the seeds of perennials that grow easily from seed like conefl owers and gallardia. There is always such an abundance of seeds that I like to scatter what I don’t save into outlying areas of the yard or down the long driveway. Sometimes they come up, sometimes not but when they do, it’s always a treat.
By the time you’re reading this, we may have had our killing frost. If not, then it will be very soon. Once that happens, it will be time to rescue all the non-hardy bulbs and tubers that we planted in spring. Gladiolus, acidanthera, dahlias, cannas and others must be rescued and stored. Many folks shy away from non-hardy tuberous garden fl owers because of “all the hassle” of digging them up and storing them. It IS a bit of work but, considering the contribution these lovely plants make to the summer fl owerbeds, the work involved is minimal. Besides, they increase in size and number with each season so you’re rewarded with more to plant and share with gardening friends.
Rescuing the plants is simply a matter of popping them out of the ground (“lifting” is the term gardening types like to use) with a trowel or shovel. After they’ve air-dried, any loose soil should be shaken or brushed (not washed) from them. After cutting off the dead foliage, I’ll dust them with a bulb dust to help prevent rotting. This I accomplish by putting a little of the dust in a paper bag, adding the bulbs and shaking, (ala shake & bake). Once they’re dusted, I’ll place my bulb collection into paper bags or cardboard shoeboxes fi lled with dry, sterile POTTING SOIL. You could use peat moss or wood shavings instead but I prefer sterile potting soil since it lessens the chance of rot during storage. Avoid airtight, plastic containers for storage. Plastic containers won’t allow your dormant bulbs and tubers to “breathe” properly. Once they’re all boxed and bagged, I’ll place the collection in a cool location that doesn’t freeze over winter. Once or twice during the winter, I’ll take my collection out to move them around and check for dryness. If they seem to be drying out, I’ll mist them with water, allow them to dry and place them back into storage. There really isn’t much work involved so when you see summer fl ower-ing bulbs offered in the garden centers in spring (when they’re generally available), be brave and try a few. It’s well worth the little effort you’ll expend.
Just one little tip before I run out of space. If you have an area of your lawn that you want to start or thicken up, consider “dormant seeding”. The idea is to wait until the weather gets so cold that there is no chance of grass seed sprouting (but before the snow falls) and apply grass seed. This may sound crazy but here’s the idea. Your late application of grass seed will lie out there all winter without sprouting. Snow and rain will beat the seed down through the grass blades to the surface of the soil. Since the seed will be soaking all winter, it will sprout with the fi rst warm weather next spring. Don’t worry about the freezing weather harming the grass seed. Grass grown in a natural state (not mowed) would grow tall and produce a crop of seed. This seed would then fall to the ground and sprout the following spring. We mow our lawns so the grass plants never get the chance to produce a crop of seed. By adding seed late in the season, you’re providing that crop. It’s an easy way to thicken up thin areas without having to waste time in the spring dragging hoses around trying to keep the seed moist. Try it…it works. Thanks for the read.

Registration Now Open for “Native New York” ProgramBALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County Historical Society an-nounced that registration is now open for Native New York, Brookside Museum’s popular program for elementary school students. Students will explore local Native American history in a variety of interactive ways. At the Three Sisters garden, children grind corn in stone mortars and learn about the impor-tance of squash, beans and corn in Haudenosaunee culture and diet. While spending time with a Mohawk storyteller, students learn important lessons about what it was like to live in a com-munity and how Native American traditions infl uence our mod-ern government. At our new Investigation Station, students have time to experience, analyze and process new concepts and information. They will also view original, centuries old arrow-heads and pottery shards and discuss what they can learn from these artifacts. Students will be exposed to a variety of new vocabulary and have the opportunity to experience these new terms in context. This program supports the Common Core State Standards Initiatives and additional resources are avail-able for extended classroom learning experiences. Program fee is $5 per person from member schools and $6 per person from non-member schools. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, please contact Anne Clothier, Direc-tor of Education at [email protected] or call 885-4000.

Benefit Concert For Keepmasonmoving.Org CAPITAL DISTRICT - Performers, businesses, and volunteers from across the region have banded together to host a benefit concert for Keep Mason Moving, a new local organization dedicated to helping children with terminal illness, at the Put-nam Den in Saratoga Springs on Sunday October 13th, 2013 from 1:00pm – 7:00pm. Less than three months ago, Keep Ma-son Moving was nothing more than a vision to support Ma-son Devine, a local six year old boy diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. In less than two weeks, the Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs will be hosting the first of many fundraisers to support the organization’s mission to help children with ter-minal illness and their families focus on the quality of time they have together. Leading the charge are several local performers, businesses, and a team of dedicated supporters. The event will feature local musicians, food from many area restaurants, and a day filled with indoor and outdoor activities for children of all ages. The $25 admission to the event includes a Keep Ma-son Moving wristband, delicious food, 6+ hours of music, and activities for children. Children under 13 enter free with paid adult admission. To learn more, purchase wristbands, or make a donation online, please visit the organization’s website at www.keepmasonmoving.org

Tips to Make Owning a Car More Affordable(StatePoint) From gas, park-ing permits and insurance premiums, to maintenance and repairs, owning a car can be an expensive prospect. But motorists can pave the way to lower costs by following a few clever rules of the road:
Reduce Your Rate
Shop around for auto in-surance, as prices can vary widely between companies. For a cheaper rate, avoid pur-chasing a sporty or expensive vehicle. Insurance companies are more likely to give low rates to drivers of reliable cars that have safety features.
Inquire into any discounts associated with a clean driv-ing record. And if you don’t log too many miles per week, you may also be eligible for a low-mileage discount.
Make Smart Repairs
The next time your vehicle needs a part replaced after a fender bender, opt for alternative collision repair parts, which are any-where from 26 to 50 percent less expensive than parts issued by car companies. Such parts also often have warranties that exceed those offered by the car companies.
On average, competition in the collision parts industry saves consumers approximately $1.5 billion a year. Car companies, however, are trying to prevent drivers from utilizing these less expensive parts by enforcing design patents on things like bum-pers, hoods and mirrors, say experts.
Supporting consumer-friendly legislation, such as the Promot-ing Automotive Repair, Trade, and Sales (PARTS) Act, would mean more consumer choices and access to affordable repair parts in the future. More information about the PARTS Act can be found at www.KeepAutoPartsAffordable.org.
Fuel Up Effi ciently
Regular maintenance to your vehicle will help it run more smoothly and effi ciently. So take care of your car.
Pay attention to your route. With the right apps, you can make bumper-to-bumper traffi c a thing of the past. Sophisticated
GPS-based technologies can steer you clear of the road blocks and jam-ups that leave you idling and wasting fuel.
For short trips, consider using your own two feet. It’s great ex-ercise and will save you a few pennies in the process.Make trips to the gas station worth your while by fi lling the tank completely. After all, you are using gas every time you idle waiting for a pump.
For most people, owning a car is not a luxury, but a necessity. While some ex-penses associated with driv-ing are unavoidable, there are steps you can take to make it a more affordable mode of transportation.
