Scholarships:
Applications for 2014 Year 7 scholarships are now open. Applications for the scholarships
are available from our website or from the front office at school. There are four categories of
scholarship for students entering Year 7 next year. They are Academic for students who
excel in their academic studies, General for students who stand out for reasons other than
academia such as leadership or sporting skills, Rural for students who live outside the usual
Baimbridge College ‘zoned’ area and Music for students who have excellent musical skills
whether vocal or instrumental.
Determination of successful applicants is done using a combination of written application,
interview and primary school history and/or references. Applications close on Friday 30th
August.
Long Tan Commemoration:
The commemoration of the Battle of Long Tan takes place this Sunday 18th August.
Assistant Principal Miss Rosemary Morgan will represent Baimbridge College at the
Vietnam Memorial in Lonsdale Street with a number of our students. Any interested
students should contact Miss Morgan tomorrow if they would like to participate. Anyone
representing Baimbridge College will need to be in full school uniform.
Information Nights:
Our Year 9/10 Information Night takes place on Wednesday 21st August at 7.30 pm in the
VCE Centre on the east campus. Letters have been sent home to ensure parents have a
concrete reminder of this important night. A large number of teachers will be present to
answer any questions about elective subject selection so I urge parents and students to
take advantage of this excellent opportunity.
Welcome:
Welcome to Miss Tamara van Hees who began working with us in our library this week.
Miss van Hees will be working along-side Mr Franks and Mrs Dempsey helping to keep our
library organised and ready for student and teacher use every day.

A MACARON FEST FOR WORK EXPERIENCE
As part of our Year 10 Careers studies all students had to participate in two weeks of Work Experience. While some of us had
some difficulty in deciding where we wanted to do our experience, I had always had the idea of going up to Sydney to do a
week at Adriano Zumbo’s Patisserie. For about three years now, I’ve had the idea I would like to be a patissier but also study
food science at university, and for me working at Adriano Zumbo’s was the epitome of all work experiences. For those of you
have never heard of him, Adriano is probably Australia’s most celebrated patissier, having had regular appearances on
Master Chef thanks to his quirky fusion of science and traditional French patisserie. He is sometimes referred to as ‘the
patissier of pain’ for his technically difficult macarons and elaborate cakes, such as the croquembouche and his eight-layered
vanilla cake. I didn’t even know if they offered work experience, but two weeks after I sent them an email I was accepted for
one week of work experience from the June 17th to June 21st.
It was a whirlwind week. ‘The Lab’ gave me a valuable look behind the scenes of a fully functioning pastry kitchen. I was one
of five girls there for the week; three were from Sydney and another from Melbourne. We were thrown into the kitchen with
20 other apprentices and fully qualified patissiers. By the end of our first day we were
exhausted, having sorted, sandwiched and packaged 16,000 macaron shells into 8,000 redskin,
blackcurrant and caramel liquorice macarons. The rest of the week was much the same,
although the third day being my birthday, I was allowed to work exclusively in the chocolate
room. Adriano was there for the whole week and we were lucky enough to meet him.
Occasionally, he came down into the kitchen to either cook ‘zonuts’ (his version of a croissant-
doughnut hybrid), test out a new recipe or both delight and intimidate the work experience
girls.
The work was repetitive and exhausting but every moment was worth it. I witnessed the
dedication and hard work required to make it in the world of pastry through the other chefs
and apprentices I worked alongside. Every moment of the week was amazing, from being in the
kitchen, working in the chocolate room and of course, meeting Adriano! My week of work experience has definitely
confirmed that I would love a career, someday, in the hospitality industry.

Opening Night at the PAC is Wednesday 28 August and will be performed each
night until the Finale on Saturday 31 August.
Baimbridge Green and Baimbridge Gold Football players arrived at Pedrina Park on Tuesday13 August all keen
and excited and just wanted to get out there and play. Even though Baimbridge’s day wasn’t the most successful
in terms of win/losses, it was still a lot of fun with games going down to the wire, losing three games by less than
a goal. When the day was said and done, everyone went home with a smile on their face.
Thanks to those who umpired, coached or played. A best player medallion for each team is being presented at a
general assembly next week.
