BACTERIA AND THEIR SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP
Dan, Raza, Yuhui
Bioluminescent Bacteria• Genera Vibrio and photomicrobium• Bacteria that look like curved rods about 1 to 3 microns long• They have symbiotic relationships with flashlight fish, angler fish
and bobtail squid• Use oxygen to produce light• (FMNH2 + O2 + RCHO FMN +RCOOH + H2O + Light)• Enzyme luciferase• Bacteria light production controlled by Lux operon
Methanogen• Archaea• Uses hydrogen gas to
reduce carbon dioxide to methane (chemoautotroph)
• Obligate Anerobe• Swamps, marshes, animal
guts• Some are extremophiles
Ruminant• Even-toed hoofed mammalian herbivore• Have a digestive chamber called the rumen which contains microbes
that break down cellulose (Ex: Methanogen)• 15-20% global production of methane

Bioremediation
• Used to help degraded ecosystems and environments
• A strategy of restoration ecology with the use of living organisms such as: prokaryotes, fungi, or plants to detoxify environments
• Genetic engineering is also used along side nutrient supplementation to maximize growth
• Augmenting ecosystem Deincoccus radiodurans
Examples of Places that Need Bioremediation
